    After hours and hours of a lot of experimenting and NO information anywhere on how to actually do this, I'm on the road to figuring out how to bind a Taranis QX7 with an IRX4+ TX module in the back to a UMX Timber park flyer. I thought I should share because this is going to matter to anyone with this radio wanting to bind to this Spectrum protocol.
    The default channel setup in the Taranis is standard TAER but in the DSM protocol it is AETR. So, I selected "0" on the yellow knob for serial operation on the IRX4+. In the Taranis Radio Setup I turned off the internal transmitter (of course) and selected the external transmitter, Multi DSM, Subtype X 22ms, CH1-7, RxNum 07. I did NOT change the Taranis INPUTS from standard TAER, but I added channel 5 (gear/hopefully AX3S/SAFE) and 6 (for flaps). In the the MIXER Channel 5 will eventually be SAFE/AS3X. I changed Channel 1 to Ail, channel 2 to Elev, channel 3 to Thr, channel 4 to Rud and added channel 5 and 6. In channel 6 (flaps) the source is Flp, I selected switch SB, and Multiplex is set to "Add". I could have selected any switch, but I want to use my left hand AND I'm reserving SF for another function. Also, in the Taranis outputs I changed channel 1 to Ail, channel 2 to Elev, channel 3 to Elev, and channel 4 to Rud. No Curves, no logical switches (yet), no special functions (yet). Now I have all four flight controls plus full flaps on with SB but I'm still trying to figure out how to get SAFE and AS3X. To bind, I turn on the transmitter then connect the plane battery. You don't need to use the bind function in the Taranis model setup menu.
    If I figure out the rest I'll post back. Hope this helps someone else get started on this project. Maybe we can finish it up together?

    Helpful. Well done.
    I like when you make extra comments that might not be exactly on topic but do provide useful information. As a raw beginner, all of those comments are educational.
    It is also useful when you slow down a little when you mention a detail such as the exact name of a product or the steps to be followed in some process. It saves a lot of time in rewinding the youtube videos.
    Another good point about your channel is that you give opinions and not just raw specs. Your opinions seem to be rational and well thought out so that helps us viewers sort out the wheat from the chaff.
    Thanks again.

    Hi Nick. Another great review. I bought an earlier model of this (six months). Did the soldering, add the case to the PCB board. I use it with my Turnigy 9xr Pro. Fits just like the Taranus. I can fly all my quads and planes. When something new comes out, I wait for the deviationtx people to come up with the proper coding and add it to my system. Thanks again, great presentation.

    I picked up a qx7 and the irangex module and love it. I have 10 quads with flysky receivers in them and didn't feel like switching them all out right away so this was a much better option. It works well and range is good. Was a little hard to figure out how to set it up at first but after watching a few videos I got it working. Thanks Nick

    Nick, I can't thank you enough for this video. I just recently got back into the RC hobby after a rather long hiatus. My son and I have really gotten into the FPV drone thing. I'm using an old Spektrum DX6i, and I bought him a new DX6 Gen 3. What a mistake! I should've researched the latest/greatest tx's and rx's and protocols before dropping 200 bucks on a Gen 3 DX6!
    Recently, I have been considering Taranis tx's for both of us. After seeing how easy it is (thanks to your demonstration) to update the firmware on it, and use a multi-module to use other protocols, I'm sold. I'll be ordering us each a Taranis and iRange IRX4 modules today.
    Thanks again!
    Edit: And I'll be using your Affiliate Link to BG to do so. ; )

    @JasperTielen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Nick, two things I'd like to add to the video.
    One, in companion you must select use nightly builds before you can download the right firmware (at least for me when opentx 2.2RC10 came out I had to)
    Two, the multi module firmware must receive AETR1234 and nothing else. The different orders are done by the firmware and not on the TX.

    Maybe you can help me. I'm just now getting back into the fixed wing RC hobby after 20 years away. The radio technology is totally different now. I am successfully flying an X-vert and UMX Timber with the Spektrum SPS1000 that came with the X-Vert BUT there are control tradeoffs when binding to the Timber, i.e., loss of flap operation and panic button. I also have an FrSky QX7 that has lots of open channels and lots of model memory, so I want to add to the Timber to the model memory. My question is simple, but I have not been able to get a simple answer anywhere. Will the iRange IRX4 allow me to fly my Timber? The protocol list mentions DSM but UMX and E-Flight are not in the compatible manufacturers list. I know there will be firmware updating to perform and all of that, I just need to know if this will work. THANKS in advance!

    Instead of plugging in a cable, could I copy the sd card content file to the micro sd card for the transmitter and then update the firmware from just the card? Do I have to plug it in to the computer or can I use the micro sd card? Hope that made sense.

    Does anyone know a protocol that works for Futaba FAAST Receivers? I have a Futaba 6EX and a T7C transmitter and there are 3 receivers that work with them....the FrSky, the Hobby King Orange receivers , and the Futaba 617 receiver. I see there is a protocol for the FHSS receiver, but it would be good (for me at least) that the FAAST receivers had a protocol on the 4 in 1. Thanks.

    it seems that one could buy a bnf frsky quad but also dsm2 or dsmx bnf? i saw in the settings you can choose dsm2 or dsmx with this multi module. am i wrong or right?

  • @dirtmcgirt3445
    @dirtmcgirt3445 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Reading the product description, it seems it only does the toy grade protocols. The hobby grades listed all have one or more transmitters that the module can fit in, for most it's plug and play, the FlySky TH9X, requires modification. But looking at your video, whoever wrote the description must've been confused.

      On the radio are you choosing the external module or "external rf"? then select flysky below that.

  • @JustaPoke
    @JustaPoke 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The older versions used the button and dia only when in PPM mode. In serial mode it's fully controled by software as well. I wonder if you can update the firmware on this iRange like you can do with the older cards? (that where not in a housing) The newer version (with more memory) even has a USB connector on it for that.

    • @JustaPoke

      The protocols are in the firmware on the card, Open-TX does not do more than just select them. (If I'm right, not 100% sure)

      Certainly more pitch and control w a hobby grade transmitter.
      Also, what do you make of eachines patriotic clone of the Ur 65 ? The main difference seems to be the motor kv has been highered to 19000 versus the Ur 65 at 17000. Do you think that will reduce flight times at all ?

    • @danielsung2184
      @danielsung2184 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      is arm and bind different? when you say down and to the left for a moment, which stick are you talking about on the taranis? the left stick or the right stick? and when do i arm it? immediately after i turn on the receiver and the tiny whoop?

    • @NickBurnsFPV
      @NickBurnsFPV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes bind and arm. binding is for the receiver and arm to fly. use the
      left stick down and out for a moment to see if it arms. If not try down
      and in with the left stick.

    Hi, I'm new to quad's and I'm just putting together pieces together that have yet to arrive. I ordered a Taranis QX7 but the quad I ordered a Wizard X220S has either a iRangeX iR-A8S / Flysky FS-A8S receiver that comes built in. I'm not too familiar with what I need but I was told that the QX7 would not be able to communicate with those receivers and I would either need a new receiver like an FrSky D8R-II PLUS 2.4Ghz 8CH Receiver or could I use this module to get it to work?
    If so would you suggest that as the best option or just to replace the receiver?
    Thanks, sorry if I sound like a complete newb, but this is all new to me. :)

    • @Snafu2346
      @Snafu2346 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for replying. I was told that using the module might not be best for outdoor use, that the range will suffer and the module is more for use for small drones in close proximity or indoor micro drones.
      I appreciate the feedback.

    • @NickBurnsFPV
      @NickBurnsFPV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The module is only 1/2 of the range equation. If our quad has a poor receiver that could hurt the range with any radio/module. I think i show that it has good range with the equipment I tested with.

I'm having an issue with the qx7 warning me about "rf signal low/critical" and sometimes with further range it even states telemetry lost. I have it bound with a spektrum 636a with SAFE Select. I haven't actually lost control during any of my flights but I'm worried about the range and stability.

      the boldclash is bayang protocol, the furibee i don't think is supported and I do not know what protocol the h31 is but I really want to fly it with the taranis. I wish there was a list of what quad will work with a certain protocol. I only have about 30 of these toy quads and most use a known protocol but there are quite a few that I don't know the protocol, I should just st down and go through all the unknowns and try to bind them one protocol at a time, but that sucks to plug and unplug the battery every time you try a new protocol and there are a lot of them in the module. sorry for the long comment.

      How is the range on the module. Is it on par with stock walkera and spektrum?

    Does it do telemetry for dsm receivers?

    • @JasperTielen
      @JasperTielen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      FPV Jos It will do telemetry for DSM

    • @MrJoris666
      @MrJoris666 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok thank you, but why does the screen on model setup says "status no telemetry" for the dsm protocol?

    • @JasperTielen
      @JasperTielen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      FPV Jos because that line is for multi_module telemetry and not rx telemetry.
      The idea is that the module tells the transmitter what version of the protocol your using. But I didn't get that to work with the IRangeX module. It does work with the older atmega version.

      Radiolink at9, seems like radio not really for miniqads and sticks feels pretty wear off.
      Also want to try different modules in future, like yours and something long range:)

    • @NickBurnsFPV
      @NickBurnsFPV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a switch to arm. This allows us to confirm it will arm in betaflight before going out to fly.

    • @Elecifun
      @Elecifun 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, OK, I am trying to arm a Syma X5C and a Hubsan X4. My Hubsan and Syma bind but I can not get them to fly : /

    • @NickBurnsFPV
      @NickBurnsFPV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, that type of model doesn't have arming I don't think. Once they are bound and on we should be able to just throttle up. Might need more tweaking of the radio to get it to operate those quads.

    Wow a copy off of the 4n1 module for the Devo transmitters...If it's as good as they are it should be a winner i have 2 devo 12s transmitters both with the 4n1 modules and they work flawlessly..And they only require soldering 3 wires unlike the old method of adding each module individually ..

    What about the Horizon line of UMX planes,can I use this radio for airplanes or is this for quads only? Sounds like it is a quad only radio. Nothing wrong with that. I only have a couple quads,personally I prefer flying helicopters and planes,Quads bore me,no challenge really.

    • @NickBurnsFPV
      @NickBurnsFPV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't say with any certainty, I have not had any UMX planes.

      RC Hobbyist Extreme UMX is Spektrum protocol I believe, so DSMX/DSM2 should work.

      Just out of curiosity and if you don't mind me asking, have you flown a quadcopter in acro mode? I ask because planes are something I have loved for years and got pretty good at flying them, aerobatics and all that good stuff.
      My first hour or two with Q7 ( syma x5c clone ) and I knew it would not last as I did not even drain all my batteries and went home lol.
      I have only flew acro on freerider ( a simulator ) I purchased the full version one for $4.99 a couple of weeks ago, that's when I woke up again and realised how much of a challenge a good race or freestyle quad in acro mode is to fly well, try snappy mode one then two then custom it up more if ya like.
      I actually started getting bored with sport planes and now this has brought me back to rc.
      FPV race style quads for me is a new dimension of the hobby that I'm loving.
      I fully agree that toy syma type quads get boring fast if you have been flying planes or heli's.
      Funny thing is, heli's were not really my thing although with FPV they may have been. For belting through gates and around trees with cheap replacement props I feel quads are where it's at for me.
      It may be worth your while to try freerider free version in acro if you haven't already.
      Horses for courses apply here I guess though :)

    I don't think I can give up my Devo 8s because of the butter sticks! LOL Nice to see these things getting out there though. I imagine the X7 sticks feel better then the devo 10 though right? Does this module increase the number of channels available since it is using OpentTX ? Curious about that sense Deviation software does.. I have friends however that don't want to do any soldering even though the new 4 in 1 mods on the Devo's are only 3 wires to solder except for the 7e. Great Stuff as always Nick!

    • @NickBurnsFPV
      @NickBurnsFPV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do think the sticks are smoother on the x7, but unless I am going back and forth between the radios I can't say I would notice.

    • @Desode
      @Desode 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Burns I I hear what you're saying I don't often notice much difference in the Sticks on radios. then I got my Devo 8s and I could not believe the difference in the feel from the sticks on the 8s. it was honestly the first time I ever noticed a difference in radio gimbals.

    And oh I am a new subscriber I've been watching a lot of videos by everybody because I would love to build my own quad but as for now I think I'm going to buy something almost ready to fly hopefully but I really like your channel in this particular you about the eye range multi module but please if you can let me know if it will fly the sky Viper s1700 thanks

      Welcome to the hobby, you will surely have a lot of fun. I don't have the Sky Viper to test, I would suggest searching for it on the deviationtx.com website.

    I would suggest people not purchase this from banggood. I purchased one for my taranis qx7 because the concept is fantastic. Unfortunately like many others, it has constant and random dropouts. I contacted banggood and they just replied that it was not covered by warranty. I attempted to contact I range multiple times but they will not reply. Finally I ended up going to buy an orange module

    I got this FRSKY 20S and I wanted to program this thing so I could fly my RC model here in my ranch. not to fly a SpaceX or NASA rocket into orbit. Cause im not a rocket scientist…
    I’m gonna return this transmitter tomorrow. This is just a bad nightmare. Couldn’t even find those menus. Very frustrating to try to switch to this radio brand. What’s the best brand ? The old one JR that works wonders. Not going thru this.
