I can't believe I just did that. And I didn't buy a new toaster after I moved into my new house. I decided to use my air fryer to take care of the bagels and the bread. So far so good. Next test ought to be : Who makes the best strawberry jam ?. Who makes the best peanut butter . ? 😊 . Excellent toaster reviews . What do you do with all these toasters . ?
One very important test that was missed, in my opinion, is consistency on back to back toast. Any toaster I've ever used always burns the second set of toast if the dial isn't turned down after the first toasting.
Good point, I have found that too on most toasters.
can only vaguely remember it but I think Rtings tested this in their video on this
I recently bought a GE like in this video but 4 slot. I can say that hasn't been a problem with mine.
There's also the problem of random loading success/errors. If you took the time to hold the bread in place as you lower the arm you can move that 'too cold on the bottom' heat bias up making for even better results.
I have a 4 slice toaster oven that reliably sees 2 slices come out photo-perfect in around 5-6 minutes but 4 slices are a huge compromise of quality and speed adding as much as 2 minutes and requiring very OCD tile-flipping to avoid heat patterns.
Yes, that's always been my complaint with this style of toaster. I grew up in a large family and gave up on toast for this reason. I once worked for a company that provided a toaster that worked on a conveyor belt principle, it did a far better job than any of these toasters. I really liked that you could butter the bread before you put it in and it would emerge as utter perfection.
Waiting for Technology Connections comment saying "but does it present your toast to you by raising it gently?" and he'll be right.
Our lives are made better thanks to these 2 people considering things most people don't.
As soon as I saw this video I thought of the Sunbeam Radiant Control toaster that Technology Connections did a couple videos on. Those videos convinced me to get one. It replaced my other toaster. It's 100% consistent. Doesn't ever matter what I'm toasting or how cold it was. And it's quick. I found that if you give it time to raise up all the way, it toasts just a hair more and helps with the consistency. 100% recommend
@@jacobbelcher3512 I made the comment before seeing the expensive (and not great) one at the end, would much rather have the Sunbeam albeit.... 4 slice.
I'm sure cats everywhere want the gentle rising toasters to be made standard...
@@NickFrom1228 I'm not a cat person (allergic) so is the reason for that bc they would have more time to grab the toast?
He just posted a video on CFL's. Well, I watched it today (I don't recall if it was posted on 4/1 or a day or 2 earlier). He thinks of stuff I haven't and probably wouldn't have.
3 years ago the YT channel Technology Connections made a really good video about a toaster from the 50s or so, the Sunbeam Radiant Control toaster. It's so interesting to see something like that which was almost the pinnacle of perfect toast making compared to these newer ones... if the ingenuity and craftsmanship of that toaster was implemented today I can only imagine how perfectly our toast would be!
Thanks for sharing.
I was just thinking up a witty comment about is all knowing what the best toaster is.
The problem is they were only made for 110v and are like 130+$
@@Birb_of_Judge I always find it fasvinating when a solid technology dies out because of cost... I'm sure the reason an old stock unit is only 110v and over $100 is because of lack of supply or care about the product, but having watched the videos on this particular toaster it really did have some interesting features that didn't exist before or after, and I find that to be a shame. Variety is the spice of life, and it trickles down into devices made and used over time. I always hate to see a practical or quality concept discarded because of price or lack of interest, these things could always prove useful in the future of humanity.

Yup! Same here. That toaster holds a place of honor on the counter, next to the bread box, right by the outlet. It's not as shiny as it once was. Mom let the Weber's bread wrapper lean against it and it now sports a blue checked tattoo on one side, but it still makes the best toast ever!

The best toaster I can think of is a Sunbeam Radiant Control toaster made from 1948 to 1996. Automatically lowers the bread, uses a thermostat to “see” how toasted the bread is (darkness just sets the thermostat to a higher temperature), then gradually lifts the bread as soon as the thermostat detects the darkness selected. Only thing is, doesn’t work with bagels since the slots are on the smaller side, but most bread, waffles, pop tarts aren’t much of a problem.
The old Sunbeam Radiant toasters are the real classics!
Thanks for sharing!
Agree. i know these videos are likely a huge effort to produce and adding more is always difficult, but I would have loved to have seen how a vintage sunbeam would have compared.
When I hear the name Sunbeam, all I can think of is their blanket recall due to risk of burns and fires.

My big issue with toasters over recent years has been lifespan. A toaster might be fantastic out of the box, only to become extremely weak a year or two later with only sporadic use. This is in stark contrast to the old Proctor-Silex toaster we had when I was a kid that lasted literal decades and still had to be kept around the middle of its range to prevent toast from getting burned. It would've been interesting (though possibly wasteful) to see how these toasters held up after a hundred uses

For toast lovers: Try putting 2 slices of bread in the same slot (if they fit).
You'll get one side toasted and the other side soft and steamy. Makes a great sandwich for biting into the soft outside but a crisp inside, or just a unique jam/nut butter spread you can also fold in half, similar to those old kids cooking toys.
Brilliant, a toasty firewall against sogginess, with a soft bite. My comment was that I use the Presto Pizzazz Plus Rotating Oven for even better results, but it's a bigger kitchen real estate commitment.

Nice tests but you missed one I’d like to see: toasting multiple batches back-to-back. I’ve noticed that when the toaster is already hot from the previous round then cheap toasters really aren’t at all consistent for the browning level of the subsequent batches.

I just bought a Proctor Silex 4 Slice Toaster with Extra Wide Slots for Bagels, Cool-Touch Walls, Shade Selector, Toast Boost, Auto Shut-off and Cancel Button, Black (24215PS) it cost me $31, but I see it's at $39 now, still a great deal at that, it's all even browning both sides, has the nice slide out crumb tray like the ones you've shown. The auto shut off is so that if a piece of bread gets stuck, it still shuts it off so you don't have a charcoal slice to pull out. The Toast Boost is just that it lifts it higher so it's easier to get the toast out. It's 1300 watts, I was a little wary as my previous Proctor Silex was not great from the beginning, this one I got is great and it was a good buy. Mine browns like the SMEG does, but at a whole lot cheaper. I'm watching your video to see how you test, great video thank you.

My Cuisanart toaster has lasted years without issue. It’s longevity that counts. A good toaster should last at least 8-10 years. I don’t think they’re made to last anymore. Thanks
Great feedback on the Cuisinart!
I got a used Cuisinart from a relative... It works good and is very even with bread and bagels, even though I don't like it's plastic appearance.
To me, longevity is nice, but it's not the most important factor. I don't want to be stuck for 10 years with a toaster that does a crappy job (not saying the Cuisinart does - just that performance is more important to me than longevity. Longevity is a bonus if and only if it toasts well).
Too true. Used to expect 10-15 years for major appliances. They now fail within a few years... And similar to these toasters - Made in China... adding to Trade Imbalance
I think toasters get thrown out for being ugly and dirty more often than broken.. .
I have an old Sunbeam model "Service AT-W" toaster that used to belong to my parents. Around 1990 while still living with my parents, they purchased a new toaster and were going to throw away the old one. I took it and saved it, and have been using it ever since I moved out. It still works fine.

Thank you, Todd, for all your great testing. I've been a consumer reports fan for decades which your testing is similar, but better. For me watching or reading about the information that I learn during the test phases is fascinating. Such as life, it's not always about the destination we should consider, but more often about the "journey". 🙂
You are welcome!
Missed the Dualit! Assembled by hand in the UK, completely mechanical, 100 percent repairable, and designed to last for decades.
Yeah, and it's pretty consistently portrayed as a food nerd's recommendation.
Another would have been to pick up an old Sunbeam Radiant toaster. They measure the doneness by temperature with a thermostat, which may be apples and oranges compared to the number systems of modern day toaster, but consistency would be comparable.

Designed to last DECADES!!! For sure, mine is over 20 years old and going strong. I did replace the time about 5 years ago.
DUALIT is the BEST of the BEST!
I just replaced the heating elements in my 40 year-old Dualit for less than $10.
Thanks for the suggestion.
We are still using a toaster my bride's grandmother used since the 50's, a Sunbeam Radiant Toaster. You just put the bread in the slots, they lower and raise on their own. We have never needed another toaster in over 50 years.

Great video. I love my Smeg. Another thing about it is that you can buy replacement parts for it (which is why I bought it).
At that price, it better be repairable. Or just buy another $30 toaster every few decades
Thanks for that comment.
It's people like you who help me make my decisions.
Mind sharing your wealth with the rest of us poor peasants?! 😅
Thanks! Thanks for the feedback.
A smeg lover would love smeg. 😅
You never cease to amaze with the quality of your testing, but also what you test! It's nice to know that there's a toaster that exists that just nails it, even if it costs $220! Would love to see Dash brand products in the lineup of future kitchen appliances, they tend to be very cheap but basic and do one thing pretty well. An air fryer video would be really amazing! They're apparently not very consistent with each other
Dash Clear View ($50) was the best buy in America's Test Kitchen testing, while Breville Bit More ($90) was their winner. This one might need a round 2.
@@fredsroberts I actually have the clear view! I wanted something for wide rustic breads and that took up less space, it seems to do a pretty good job (though short stuff gets caught at the top). I want to see how it stacks up though 😂
You've done it again! Thanks for this, can't wait for next week!
Thank you very much!
What the hell is going on with toasters?? I don't remember ever having a problem with toasting bread when I was a kid, and I'm sure we NEVER had expensive, top-of-the-line toasters. You just pick your darkness, toast the bread, and it comes out as the toast you wanted, seemingly toasted evenly on both sides, everything fine. But honestly, I haven't had a decent toaster in my entire adult life. Pretty much every toaster I've personally bought, regardless of cost, just wasn't worth a damn.
Thanks for the vid. Looks like I'll be going for the GE next time. No way I'm paying $100+ for a toaster that's just marginally better than the GE performed.
I own a toaster made by Dash. The great thing about the Dash, is that it uses calrods instead of wires for heating elements. So far, (over four and a half years; purchased October 18, 2019) it is working VERY well! Thanks for another great video, Todd!
You are welcome!
I don't know what calrods are (at the moment and I'll look them up in a little while), but do they give you grill marks like these toasters did? Do we even want grill marks on our toast or bagels? Don't know, as I've not noticed in years past when I had a toaster.
Best reviewer on TH-cam! I watch all these even if I'm not buying the products
Thank you very much!
Very informative video. What was most valuable was actually seeing what the finished toast looked like. That’s all I needed to see to eliminate the majority of them.
Thanks for the feedback.
A man of taste 🤌
Awesome! Please 🙏🏻 do a Air Compressor test, I really want to know witch is the most quiet one

The problem with the Elite Gourmet is the latent heat effect. It's designed for 4 pieces of bread. Evaporating water from the bread absorbs enormous amounts of heat due to the latent heat effect. This significantly cools the toaster. The amount of heat toasters generate is based on the average water content of bread in the US. Since 2 pieces of bread has 1/2 the water content, the cooling effect is much, much less and so it makes too much heat and burns the bread.
Thanks for the feedback.
Interesting, I didn't consider that.
Makes sense since the actual "toasting" process can't begin until the water evaporates from the surface, then it can exceed 100c.
If you want a more moist toast you need a more powerful toaster, and a slow toaster will give a crunchier toast since more water deeper in the bread steams away.
Also, it looks like it has 2 heating zones, so when he put the bread in the middle of the slot instead of at one side, the center was under toasted while the sides were more toasted.
The kitchen aid toaster is the best toaster for one single reason: it beeps at you before it launches the toast and doesn't startle the pants off you every time. I would know, I've got an older model and it's been so nice.
Thanks for the feedback.
The timing of this video is perfect. My kittens found a way to send my 1950's vintage Kenmore toaster crashing off of the countertop with some rapid disassembly ensuing. But I was scared to just buy any toaster, now I know the better choices. As always, amazingly great content that is highly beneficial to those of use wanting to purchase decent quality items.
Thanks and you are welcome!
Are you sure you can't repair it? I'd try.
@@willieverusethisWHY repair it when he can get a new REVOLUTION toaster for ONLY $330😱😱😱
What were you toasting in it that made them get so close and send it careening to the floor? Or did they just not want to walk around it?
@@willieverusethis - The insulator are cracked as well as a few other broken parts. Not sure I trust it after a repair.
You didn't test the best toaster *that was made in 1949* - the Sunbeam Radiant Control Toaster uses a humidity sensor so that the Toast always comes out perfectly.
Thank you for that. I did not suspect there ever was such an advanced model. Searched a bit, 'Technology Connections' made a video about it: 'The Antique Toaster that's Better than Yours'. Cheers :)
Thank you for the video idea!
Not a humidity sensor, it senses the radiant heat, hence the name "Radiant Control"
How many mornings have I cursed the crappy uneven toasters we have available. What a way to start your day, trying to ouwit a toaster, toast it halfway then take out and rotate the toast and toast it again and if you are lucky it won't be crap. Thanks Todd! Excellent work.
Thanks!

I do that a lot with family. They think I'm nuts, until they have a need, Many times, they don't remember what this channel is called, but they remember that the pimped the bejesus out it. "Hey, did that guy ever test out........?" 5 minutes later I send them a link.
Great showdown! I have a thing about toasters... I have a automatic, motorised KitchenAid, ; put the bread in, push a button and the bread goes down, when it's finished the bread comes up automatically!
My parents have a Dualit toaster which they bought in 1967, they still use it every day. would've loved to see one of those in the showdown......next time!!
Also, I loved the mixture of metric and imperial measurements. I'm British, so I'm used to it.
Thanks for all your hard work!!

Dualit toasters are beasts, but only the British ones. They also sell Chinese toasters with the Dualit name, and they are flimsy. Yes, I have one

Thank you very much!
I have a $20 Proctor Silex that toasts nicely, and has been doing so for nine years. Before that, I had a Black and Decker that was $20 and toasted for 12+ years.
Thanks for sharing.
First of all let me say this video is similar to most of your videos, more than very good. Second, each person should fix the toast and other things to their own liking. Third, ever since the first toasters were made, where the bread had to be flipped to toast the other side, toasters have, for the most part failed to make decent toast. Proper toast should be close to what a crouton should be. That is the squashy center is not proper toast. If I were to buy a toaster, I would go for a lower watt toaster so that the center of the toast is also dried out close to the level of the crouton mentioned above. I would suggest experimenting using your oven broiler in your stove to determine how you actually prefer your toast. During your experimenting try the toast my way and then put one or two of your favorite toppings on it to see how you like it. In our household we switched to a toaster oven, we are now on our third one. We don't look for speed, but quality. That's why we use a toaster oven. This also gives us the advantage of not having to fire up the oven in the stove for small baking projects. I hope this helps with choosing a good way of fixing toast that meets your own desires. Be safe.

I _cannot believe_ that you didn't purchase a *_Sunbeam Radiant Control toaster_* to compare in this showdown! It's the best one!
