Honestly, one can take a bath in Mattei's voice - it is so beautiful, warm, and honeyed. I like his ornamentation in the aria - some singers and conductors don't like ornaments, but it was common practice in Mozart's time.
Senz' altro! I have to "ration" my "Peter Mattei" time...or I would get no work done. The voice is just...celestial, even when he's interpreting naughty characters...the Orpheus of the Opera world.
The joke, in case anybody didn't get it, is that Mattei is ironically flirting with the princess by impersonating her husband. While singing the most honey-smooth version of Deh Vieni ever.
@@cynthiachase3427 Indeed. Based on two facts: 1. Mattei is a really funny guy, always up to some mischief 2. We have quite a chill relationship with our royalty:)
@@adamleckius2253 Do tell the stories, Adam. Peter Mattei is a world treasure but I am afraid to over praise him in case the megas work him to death as they did Pavarotti.

He's so naughty! Addressing his courtship to the Queen of Sweden....her husband's very brave, haha, to haveTHAT VOICE romancing his wife!!!! All the women have dreamy little smiles on their faces....wow...what a gift...
Whose brilliant idea was it to have Peter Mattei sing "De Vieni" to the bride to be! The fixed smile on the face of the future groom is telling...🤣🤣Sorry, fiance, wedding's off...Peter, "andiam, andiaaam'!" 😂😂🤩🥰
Danmark.Synd.
@vsotosolis woooow have you really seen the first performance al La Scala? i envy you, because of your lucky. I'm going to see the same show at La Scala, on the 4th jan: i'm so excited despite it's not "la prima" (:
He's got up to look like Daniel Westling--and was singing directly to Princess Victoria, who has the real Daniel Westling sitting next to her. And I believe that they had just been married earlier that day.
He is a bit naughty, but he makes Deh Vieni more romantic than "seductive" per se in this interpretation...he's still a gentleman! However, his most recent Met Opera Don G - ooh lalala!
The mandoline player and Mattei both deliver a performance to forget. The mandoline plays a mistaken note (in the most known piece of the instrument’s repertory!) and then each one go by its side. Mattei always up and down in the placement of his truly beautiful voice, which makes it being slightly out of the exact tune many times throughout the piece. Also forgetting the traditional “cupa” voice for this piece. Not a good day for an excellent singer. How difficult is to sing Mozart…

Yeah, it's almost too beautiful. Mattei doesn't have the big, booming voice of, say, Bryn Terfel. But he has the most honey.
His voice is plenty big, he just has the further ability to control his vibrato.

It's actually quite sad that improvisation has vanished from the classical music scene considering it used to basically be a requirement
This is the best and most beautiful performance on TH-cam IMHO - I love the embellishments he adds in the second stanza
Cannot be said better.

Captivating! Thank you for posting. This is my favorite version so far. I love Peter Mattei.

Delightful acting and interesting ornamentation with a fine and flexible voice. A charmer, this man...:)
Very difficult to remain serious and continue singing so beautifully!

Eh oui.

Love the impersonation of the fiance - or were they married by then? Such a lovely voice.

Doesn't "cupa" mean dark or somber? Is it really necessary for this tongue in cheek song?
