      Just wondering how you reckon this compares to the Headrush MX5 which I already have for home recording? Only thing missing from the Headrush that annoys me is the ability to edit on computer as you have to do everything via the built-in touchscreen which is fine, but not ideal. Wondering whether to get one of these as well as it seems more straightforward for amp models and IRs?

    I just got my NUX Amp Academy... this is better than I could have hoped for.
    I don't have a c to c USB cable yet... but it does that stuff I have to abuse a tube amp to do otherwise,
    ( the almost everything cranked vintage low gain amp boosted to the verge of blowing up punk sound ) .. This Does It !!!
    maybe my particular unit is not working quite right ?, but I feel like I finally got my sound in a modeler.....happy camper here.

    I use the NUX Solid Studio at the end of my pedal chain for recording. It has a variety of amps and cabs, with variable accuracy, but there are one or two extremely useful ones. It also models a number of popular mics as well. I like it, and this Amp Academy looks like an improvement.

    I have to admit, I am a big fan of NUX. Their MLD Bass preamp is my most valued pedal!!! Just gotta love it, smart feature set and great price! Also, this seems like the guitar version, very similar features and software.

    Is Stereo possible?
    Yes I believe it is. You will need a 2 channel or more interface.
    I'm a recording engineer aswell as a guitarist..
    Record from the amp academy DI out XLR into chanell one of your audio interface into your DAW. Impulse response ON (as Colin demonstrated)
    Go from the amp academy quarter inch out into a power IR OFF (behringer 100 watt power amp is fine, it's cheap to buy) from the power amp connect a speaker cab I use a 2 x 12 but 1 x 12 will do (check out the ohms).. Then just mic up the speaker (SM57 will do the job) and connect the mic to channel 2 on your audio interface..record both channels at once panned left and right. Two different sounds recorded at once both via the amp academy... There are other ways to do this.. I prefer the above.. Big sound...
    Let me know your thoughts.. 😊

    Looks like a pedal version of what's in the NUX MG-30. I've got the MG-30 and it's no joke. Great compact modeler; useful for almost any application, home or live. Just wish it had the XLR out and IR options for it!

    This is awesome. I've been using an inexpensive modeler fro a bit now, and I decided a couple months ago that I am more than likely never going to buy another traditional amplifier. I even bought a pedalboard sized power amp to plug it into a cab. My ultimate goal is a Kemper or AXEFX, but that's a ways away.
    I've been at it for 25 years and I wish this stuff was this amazing when i started out. I would probably be a lot better.

    Already dropped my amps.. but for a Two Notes Torpedo CAB M+, I'm happier with my rig and have more flexible tones. Not lugging an amp around, not having to worry about tubes (valves), not having to mic the cab.. all super handy to have. If you are already getting much of your tone from pedals, just go digital for your 'amps' as making a clean pedal platform digital amp is really simple and using IR's is a no brainer

  • @bravotronalpha3787

    Very nice. Ever since the 'tube crisis' that kicked off months ago, I've been moving toward solid-state alternatives to tube amps. Ended up getting a Helix LT and a Hughes & Kettner Ampman Classic, but may give this a shot as well. Looks like a lot of features to be had in one box.

      @garycrant4511 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Count me in as not interested... Would you need a scientific visual graphic display to inform you if you are experiencing a good orgasm or not !!!??? Regarding guitar tone, I've been playing since the mid 1970s and have learned to rely on those odd looking flappy growths of skin and gristle on either side of my head. That, and my own experienced judgement of what sounds good or shite.... and I am no technophobe - as I've been ahead of the game in music computer technology for decades longer than most of you ocd newbies have learned to adapt from Teletubbies to Marvel super heroes ..

    • @arronfitzsimmons2303
      @arronfitzsimmons2303 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@garycrant4511 it’s definitely not needed, but I enjoy tinkering and learning the “why” with a lot of things. Good example would be the relationship between humidity and the feeling of being hot when it may be a lower temperature than the day before yet you weren’t hot then (I’m in Australia).
      In terms of the analogy of a good orgasm, I guess it would be what specifically got you to where you wanted? Like was it wearing cuffs, having someone else in charge, being tasered, or not being able to get away from her chest hair which is pure shock factor 😂

    Great demo.. I'm needing something like this as I can't justify an AxeFx or Kemper for instance, but this would be great as a pedal board amp with some other pedals in the loop. I play at places that make you go direct or use their ISO box, etc.. So, I'd rather use something like this and it has those scenes I had no idea about.. Very cool.. Thanks again!

    Damn this is like my atomic ampli-firebox, just better. This has so many features, that I desperatley want my ampli-firebox to have, like headphones and usb out, fx loop and banks that you can switch with your foot. I always felt that the ampli-firebox sounded amazing but was unnecessarily limited in its functionality. The NUX seems to have all of those functions. Might have to buy one of those and sell my ampli-firebox. 👀

    • @dnc1769
      @dnc1769 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The first thing I thought of when I saw it was the Atomic Ampli-Firebox. Apparently, they've upgraded the Firebox with the "Firebox MK II" which DOES include a headphones out. Sadly, there still isn't an fx loop but it does have more amp sims but less od pedals. There seem to be a lot of similarities but still some significant differences and it'd be interesting to see a side by side comparison to see if there really is enough of a difference to warrant the extra $100 or so for a new Firebox.

    A competitor to Joyo's Preamp House. Both great units.
    I think the Joyo has excellent preamp sims. I use a Hotone AMP + a NUX Solid Studio and it is an excellent DI rig.
    I want to grab a NUX Cerberus for a plug 'n play, no pedals or amp required, late night headphone jam option. Used to own one and foolishly sold it. Don't know anything about modeling so i like products like this Amp Academy, the Cerberus, Solid Studio etc.
    NUX products are no joke. Their Verdugo series pedals are excellent. I have 3 on my board (Masamune, Atlantic, Duotime) and they are keepers. Brand snobs be damned!

    Would be interesting to see a comparison between this and the Strymon Iridium. Seems like this has more functionality, more amp models, and is literally half the price! The NUX MG-30 is only about $40 more though, so if they have just used the exact same amp models/algorithms for this pedal it feels like you get a lot more with just buying the MG-30. If the amps in this pedal sounds a lot better I can see the value in buying this instead.

    • @chrisb3389
      @chrisb3389 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an Iridium on my main board and also own an Nux MG-30. There's no doubt that the Nux amps with external IR's are just as good (or better if considering the variety of amps) as the Iridium. I think the only thing lacking in this is stereo options. It's not a huge deal if you decide to have stereo delays and reverbs after this pedal in the chain, as you could go mono into those pedals and let them split stereo and then into an interface or powered speakers. However, if you wanted to hear your stereo delays and reverbs through the headphone jack of the unit, you are out of luck with the Amp Academy. That being said, to hear stereo effects through the Iridium, you have to have them prior to the amps, which means you have to run the Iridium amps very clean. On my board, that's what I do. I run stereo modulation, delays, and reverbs into the front of the Iridium on the Chime channel set pretty clean. That way I can use the headphone out and hear glorious stereo. In that setup, I really have to use overdrive and distortion pedals to get different amp tones. However, if stereo isn't a huge deal, this absolutely checks all the boxes and then sum in comparison to the Iridium.

    For many uses this will work quite well. Cabinet IRs are not a problem but the amplifier IRs tend to fall down for "edge of distortion" use where light playing is not distorted and hard playing is and all the in between sounds. However, many people use that straight ahead full distortion mode and this looks to work perfectly for that. I think for "edge of distortion" the emulator needs to use analog circuitry or digital emulation rather than IRs. I have an old Tech 21 TRI-O.D. That sounds pretty good into a solid state amp with a 12inch speaker or a cabinet IR. Emulating a "broken" sound is actually quite hard it turns out. Being able to switch from dirty to clean will just work for most people. Good review, Thanks.

    Best video on how these things work. Question, in the Fender sims, going to headphones, is there a way to get both reverb and tremolo at the same time?

    I’m interested to know whether the signal coming from the xlr output is line level, or if it’s quieter like it would be from a DI. I’d love to find an amp and cab sim that doesn’t need a line isolator like the walrus canvas to get strong signal to front of house.

    Can you connect simultaneously, DI to the console with the nux emu amplifier, and the output, to a real amplifier without the emu amp (cause you conect out to ream amp) , without delays or lags and sound simultaneously un the console and the real amp, in a real situation?

    This might actually be the very thing that I'm looking for.
    I'm a bass main, and so I can get very good recording plugging in direct instead of playing through an amplifier. I lack a great understanding on amps, and besides the fact, I live in an apartment and can't do loud speakers to get a recording. Nor can I afford a nice amp head, cabinet, and microphone in order to capture the full span of the sound of a guitar. And yet, I want better tone than my Berhinger Guitar DI box.
    Sometimes I record guitar completely clean and use amp settings on Finale, but there are many unsatisfying things about this experience. Sometimes I use the amp-sims in my guitar DI box, but the tones don't work well in the recording with the rest of the song. This seems to fix every issue I'm having in trying to get a good guitar tone for a musician who plays guitar as a tertiary instrument at best (Bass primary, cello secondary, piano or guitar tertiary).
    And to cap it all of, this thing is under $200? This is definitely worth looking more into.

    Okay, the feature of splitting the signal to FOH thru DI with IR AND to a poweramp/cab without IR sold it to me. Also what are you using as poweramp for that specific demonstration? Thanks!

  • @Chuck-Bob

    Also, that does make sense, feeding the output direct to the mains, and just using your cabs for your own monitoring.

    I’ve had mixed experiences with Nu-X. I use their Stageman preamp pedal for my acoustics and that has been pretty solid, but the Atlantic delay and reverb that I bought around the same time developed a mysterious woosh and subsequently died about the time that the warranty expired. My third gadget from the brand is a tuner which on paper seemed the perfect fit for me but in practice has been uncooperative when using my passive-piezo guitars. So while Nu-X may be an option for those of us who are in tight budgets, be advised that you may have to pay twice.

    NUX make rock solid gear. Hughes & Kettner put out their own little Stompman thing that's around the same price, but this looks like it's got way more versatility and the HK certainly isn't an amp modeller. Looks really cool.

    • @ScienceofLoud
      @ScienceofLoud  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because you need the power amp to drive the speaker. The pedal alone isn't providing power amplification.

    I am seriously considering of getting rid of my orange tiny terror for this. The thing is bloody noisy and I would rather have this pedal in my board for live performances with IR and headphone practice, what concerns me is how good it actually sound and whether it has this micro latency like most digital processors do

    Damn, this sounds good - most amp modelers I have tried just don't sound realistic. This would make an impressive studio recording tool - since it's hardware based, no need to worry about using DSP resources in your DAW.
