    Very groovy.
    I read an article with Tom Dowd where he talked about recording this album.
    He said Clapton & Bruce set up full marshal stacks and it was the loudest thing he ever heard.
    My friends and I always used a hard R at the end of swlabr.

    I read an interview many years ago where Eric said he preferred the ‘cowboy chords’ (first time I’ve heard that expression but I get it). He was of the view that the notes were more reliable down there. Not his exact words but close.

    • @DogSlobberGardens-i7f
      @DogSlobberGardens-i7f 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I love cowboy chords. The intonation is almost always nearly perfect and you get a lot of open strings playing in the first position. So everything just rings out better. And you can always fool around with fun voicings for different moods.

    Excellent breakdown of one of my old favorites to listen to and play (like 55+ years ago!) I completely agree that the solo was all above the 12th fret. Your tones are great - I think that has to do with the guitar as much as the amp. My first "real guitar" was a 62 SG Special. I really wish I still had it.

  • @philf4086
    @philf4086 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Great lesson, and my hobbyist ears agree with the 14th fret theory, you get the thickness of the wound strings and avoid the high E string! What I like the most about this song is the stereo separation between the rhythm and lead parts. The reverb is incredible too!

  • @georgeburns8447
    @georgeburns8447 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Clapton is definitely playing a double stop, not just a single note at the end of that little signature riff. You can clearly hear it. Play all double stops for that riff on the B and G strings (14th fret to 12th fret to 9th fret) and give the notes heavy vibrato when on the 9th fret and you'll sound like the record.

    In honor of Ringo’s new album, out today, I’d love to see “It Don’t Come Easy” one day. 😊 It’s one of my favorites to play, and I’d love to see your take on the intro riff and the solo. During Covid, (I think for Ringo’s 80th birthday), Peter Frampton showed a closeup of how to play that during his cover. I learned a few of the notes from that. But the intro to IDCE is probably my favorite guitar tone of all time. Love that Leslie sound!!

    I've always loved how that lick in the verses outlines the Amaj-Gmaj-Emaj chords with the major thirds. Since Gmaj isn't in the key of Emaj, it could be ambiguous and you might hear it in the key of Emin instead. A lot of blues based rock doesn't emphasize the major third in this kind of progression, but this song is like, "HEY! All the chords are MAJOR!"

    Great tutorial! Agree on the solo position. Not familiar with this particular song from Eric. But seeing him playing many other solos you generally see him work where the fingering is most efficient, regardless of it means staying south of 12t fret for a long time. So I think you’re spot on.

    Something about those Gibson years! Clapton was on a mission, and his playing and tone reflected it! His playing was full of piss and vinegar. I can imagine that era of trying to stay on top against players such as Alvin Lee, Peter Green, Hendrix, and then Johnny Winter, Santana, and Duane Allman up and coming flat burned him out. In his book he said between being in a band with Bruce and Baker, and the massive volume of the Cream shows was overwhelming. He definitely put a cap on that era and mellowed. But yeah, Gibson era Clapton was my favorite too!

    We all rush out and buy the gear they played in concert. They had 100 watt stacks because they are on stage.., duh. We would all be shocked to find out how many of our favorite songs were 50s Tweed Champs, 5 watt Selmers or a Silvertone P.O.S. Then the producers and engineers washed everything through compressor, delays, reverbs or what ever until they found their bliss. Mean time poor us is buying every frigin' thing in the store trying to get that magic tone..., that's what created Gear Acquisition Syndrome.

    • @johntiger5
      @johntiger5 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      In the studio with Cream on Clapton's electric guitar parts .He just played a Gibson through a Marshal cranked all the way up . Like he did on the Bluesbreaker album. The engineers told him what they wanted with the Bluesbreakers, and he told them what he was going to do.
      Why the " Beano " album was so ground breaking of a sound.
      On Disraeli Gears he played the replacement to his stolen Les Paul, which was the Les Paul he got from Andy Summers, plus "The Fool" ( S.G. ) also through a fully cranked Marshal, only addition was a wah pedal on "Tales of Brave Ulysses".
      No engineering trickery.

    Nothing wrong with calling it The Hendrix Chord, no harm in that. But it's actually called an E7 sharp 9. The sound that you hear that makes it so mean is from having a major third and a minor third voiced together in the chord, the major third is below the minor third (the sharp 9), it's a bad ass sound, old as dirt, Bach and everybody after him made use of it. But yeah, The Hendrix chord, why not (I'm all for it), we all love and respect Jimi, why shouldn't he get his own chord. Good lesson. Well done. Right on, PEACE.

      Yeah, kinda complex. Cable with RCA jack on one end 1/4" on the other. Rca to amp, 1/4 into my fryette power station attenuator. It allows you to set ohm for amp and different to cabinet. So I can set the right ohm set for the amp, and 8 ohm to the cabinet. So that's how I do it. I've run the vibro champ in that way to go through a big 4x12 marshall cabinet too :-)

    You might want to use a compressor to sound like most records because that is the typical treatment. It evens out the response like toothpaste out of a tube.

    @12 foot chain This is a pretty great tune.But if I'm being honest, I like YOUR tone better, & You did a fantastic job getting as close as possible BTW, however the rhythm on the album has this annoying screeching to it, & it's tough as a musician FOR "MY EARS" ANYWAY) to listen to! But well done as always, Brother! Thank You!

    Actually a good lesson and video, but why do you do not start with playing the song, so the viewer knows what to expect? Yes, I/we know the song but it would be nice to see at the beginning what we get in this video.

      That was Badge. George was writing it down on paper and Clapton was looking at the paper upside down and misread as Badge. And the rest is history ....
