Lighting White Seamless Pt. 2

  • Here is the second part of lighting a white seamless. In part one I covered the basics in terms of gear and space and demonstrated how this all works with video lights. For part two I cover doing this same thing with strobes and then go into some post production tips and tricks in Photoshop.
As with all of my TH-cam videos, there is a blog post associated with it with more information, links, etc. That's also where I spend the most time answering questions, comments, and concerns. Find this blog post here...
    dedpxl.com/?p=7543
    Thank you for watching!
PS - Apologies for the video artifacts. When OS 10.9.3 came out it broke something in OpenCL between my video cards and Premiere. It's a well documented issue that hopefully someone is going to fix really damn soon.

Ace photographer, master educator and all round good guy Zack Arias takes his original blogpost on lighting a white seamless background, which in itself was awesome, and totally grinds it into the dust with a SUPERB new video production spanning two parts and delivers what is surely a photographic masterclass on using off camera flash to get the classic all-white seamless look. This is part 2 of 2 and continues nicely where part 1 left off and covers how to pull this off with strobes (or speedlights - the theory is all still relevant and do-able), varying the exposures and ratios, assessing the affect of too much or too little light on the background and how that affects the contrast for the scene and subject, problem solving, mixing up the lighting for effect to create black backgrounds rather than white, and finally some simple but effective techniques to use in post production to clean up the images and expand the white/black backgrounds to give a polished final product to deliver to clients. Running at almost an hour in total these two fabulous video posts are pure gold-dust if you are looking to expand and reinforce your photographic lighting knowledge. If it's all new to you but has whetted your appetite to learn more (and it damn well should have), then I'd recommend heading over to the #DEDPXLwebsite where you'll find a ton of stuff of interest, not just on photography I might add but music, good reading recommendations, interesting videos on all manner of life topics, as well as education of the highest quality. All signal; no noise - massive respect to Zack and his team of contributors for the sterling job they are doing. Get on it people: what are you waiting for! #education #photography #lighting #offcameraflash #strobist #seamless #zackarias #dedpxl #LightingWeek

Zack. You are amazing! All other photographers doing educational videos should strive after this format.
I love how you take the time to explain your thoughts and work flow. No rushing. No over-obsessing about gear. Just brilliant.

Zack, if you only knew how helpful this video was to me a few years back. My main focus these days is filming commercially. Electronic flash is of no help there of course, but this tutorial made me work harder with lighting techniques generally, and not to be afraid of experimentation - thank you 👍

Zack, this was a great 2 part series. What I appreciate is that you keep it simple, and to the point. And you never make it seem as though you have to have these specific brand of lights, lens or camera to get the job done.

Hey Zack, I first saw you on Digital Rev TV with Kai and Loc in the PRO Photographer Cheap Camera Challenge in Hong Kong. I thought you were great. The way you interacted with with your subjects, got the shots and made people smile and laugh even with the language barrier was amazing. You took a piece of crap camera and a light and made some great photos.
Next I was watching you with Jared Polin and again you did some amazing things with lighting.
I have subscribed to your channel and watch every video you post. But I no longer watch digital rev or Jared Polin.
Keep up the great work and thanks. Doug

Or he just forgot or just didnt. haha. The tutorial really made me think, so maybe he wanted, and what tools I need or don't or the priority of said tools. BRAVO Zack!

Greetings from Singapore. I'm thinking of moving to MF now from my decade long with 35mm. Where I live, getting a demo for a side by side comparison isn't easy and would like to ask what were your major reasons for picking up PhaseOne as opposed to the Hasselblad. I shoot primarily for corporate clients, annual reports etc.. somewhat slow paced work. I do appreciate dynamic range, skin tones and an "ok" AF would be a plus for MF. Whats your recommendation?
