The Sax performance by Pink Floyd,,, The Dark Side Of The Moon was always very touching from 70s to date,,, I saw them live in Detroit in 76 ,,,, the actual plane crash was the real kicker of that concert , and nice tutoring clip here too Thanks
love the relaxed way you teach.... wish you would do more videos with your EWI... I live in a flat so can't play the sax as it to loud... play the EWI.... but love watching you teach... class...
It's 1 am and I'm in bed... why am I watching this now?! I'll be back tomorrow morning Edit: Back. And at first I figured I would only practise that first phrase, because it seemed difficult enough, but I figured that out pretty quickly! So I'm learning the whole thing now :-) (minus the d maj scale. That's still a tad too fast paced for me, so I'll work on that scale independently). Edit 2: Can now do the whole thing! My articulation isn't the greatest and I'm pretty bad at the scooping on the A and B, but it sounds pretty neat! Thanks for the tutorial!
Thank you for putting your videos out. You have inspired me to pull my horn out and start playing again after 21 years. I love the song Baker Street. But you asked a question what was your favorite pop solo. Mine is "Seductions" by the James last band with David Sanborn. Maybe you can have a tutorial on this as well!!
Great vid, thanks to you Nigel i`ve got this iconic solo under my belt now.. what i would love is for you to explain how to play the intro sax solo of the working hour by tears for fears.. for me thats one of the most beautiful solo`s ever! And i have no clue how to begin getting that one under the fingers!
You’re welcome! Glad this lesson helped you. And great suggestion- The Working Hour is a classic 80s sax track. Quite a lot to discuss in that intro - I’ll put it on my list!
Love this. I don't play the sax (I play the Tin whistle) but I love Baker Street and was interested to see how it is played... Just came across another two songs with a great sax melody. Shanice - "I love your smile" (The sax comes in at 2.48).. and also T'Pau - "China In Your Hand"
Yeh ..its great to have selection of whistles..no side-key levers on whistles...although French group Doolin use a keyed whistle........Recently I worked out a system to play/ learn in every key on Whistles...means I can play along any type music and identify the actual key...bit of music theory but mainly by ear
@@monksee Here I checked up your music....good stuff..I am more interested in playing along with the modern technology ...must link up with you to echange sounds....am doing that in Dublin with a friend In his recording studio on occasion
On the alto sax I've been breaking this learning down a bit further. I'm playing in the lower octave first, to get used to the fingering, before jumping in with the octave key. I have the curse of huge hands and until I can afford to splash out a few quid on making key rises, the octave key plus the D palm key requires some weird contortion, so for now, I'm playing down one octave. If I can nail that run up the octave in the first bar, though, I'll be well on my way.
That’s another classic - we have a lesson on the solo inside Sax School actually. SaxSchoolOnline.com (14 day trial still available if you’d like to check it out👍)
Great tutorial! I must learn HARLEM NOCTURNE! All versions are great and my favorites are by "The Viscounts" (Harry Haller) and Georgie Auld. Hope you can help, Have a great day!
The Viscounts version of Harlem Nocturne is a classic! I love the Sam Butera version too (Louis Prima's sax player). I have lessons on how to play that one inside Sax School (if you're quick there is free access at the moment here: www.mcgillmusic.com/). Thanks for watching!
Whenever I see something and they have some music in the background. A 9 out of 10 times it is to loud and overpowering. And I'm all, why don't they pick some more mellow music. this "HARLEM NOCTURNE", fits the prescription exactly. And I will have the opportunity to use it, sometime. Last time I needed some background music I picked some song by "Queen", but I forget what it was, that was 25 years ago.
I like baker st by all means. When you show notes I’m stumped. Cant read music at all. I’m more interested in seeing we’re youre fingers are at, I find that helps most.
Great tutorial, have allways loved this solo, so iconic! I played the clarinet at school, so I have some musical knowledge. The problem is I only have( inherited) a soprano sax and a tenor, is it possible to play this solo changing the octave?
Sure thing. Actually inside Sax School we have the tenor / soprano transcription version available for members. If you aren't a member yet you can check it out here: saxschoolonline.com/join-today/
Hi Chris. That’s a great track. I haven’t made a specific lesson for that track in Sax School yet but there are a bunch of similar lessons that will help you play in this style and learn how to improvise over a pop track like this. Plus, our tutor team are on hand inside Sax School to help if you do need guidance with this specific song. You can find out more here: www.mcgillmusic.com/join-today
Not to be a know-it-all but at 9:48 you say its a tie/slur, just so you know a tie is with two of the same notes that you connect and a slur is two differnet ones that you connect without tonguing. Otherwise great sound and tutorial!
Hi there, what advice woudl you have for a brass player coming to the Saxophone please? I've had a curved soprano for about a week and already playing tunes like Summer time, but still having problems creating a good sound and my intonation is awful! I'm using a size 2 reed.
I think the sax in (George Michael - Careless Whisper ) is so pretty. NOT the song. The sax lick at the beginning and toward the end. 10 seconds each. pretty and smooth.
I see that the scale changes from D major to G major when transposing from alto to tenor. But the G notes begins on the G3 octave which is a much lower octave than the alto. I assume this is because if I try to play the tenor sax at the same octave level as the alto, I would have to start at the G4 that would push me into the altissimo range for the G5, which is not for beginners. Am I correct?
That is a classic Beverley! I have made lessons on how to play that inside my Sax School members area actually. If you're quick, I have free access available at the moment here: www.mcgillmusic.com/
I have seen at least three different lessons on this song. But they are all showing me different note to play the same song .??? Is it simply because they are playing in different keys?
Great question - it could be the other lessons are in different keys. Could also be different interpretations. I think mine is pretty accurate - I hope it helps you.
where is the Growl Effect ???? every cover I see has almost none or no Growl , the only cover that is by a Blonde that even for me is the best cover of this solo !!!
Thanks for doing this. You are an awesome person, helping others to learn the most beautiful instrument!
Your videos are great! First day on the alto (or on any kind of saxophone) and can already play this thanks to your many tutorials 🎉🙌🏻

Great idea - once you have a couple of essential tactics for that solo, it become easier to make your own solos that sound great.
