The AOE developers are so interesting for continuing to develop not just one of their games, but multiple games of the same series at the same time to where it feels like they are all getting love.

Pretty sure this is only possible because none of these devs are actually anywhere close to being the “OG devs”.
It’s a whole new studio. Ensemble Studios bit the dust long before even AoE 2 HD was a thing.

@@I_enjoy_some_things Yeah, they're not really "still getting" content. They're getting it again. There's a good decade gap in there for both of them between the end of their initial life cycle patches- and expansions-wise, and the rereleases that have been getting new stuff.

AoM would be fantastic to bring back. It had by far the best arcade mode, as the addition of unit abilities and god powers could be creatively used to make a lot of different custom games.

    • @ArawnOfAnnwn
      @ArawnOfAnnwn 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

@@zachrowe6271 AoM isn't like AoE 3 or 4, both of which were controversial with the AoE 2 playerbase. Most of the AoE 2 playerbase seems to have fond memories of AoM, so I wouldn't be surprised if a large chunk of them take to playing both games. If that happens then, combined with its existing playerbase, it could very well perform evenly with AoE 2.

@@zachrowe6271 It depends on how good Aom Retold will be. If it's done really good it can be as sucessful as AoE2. There are a lot of people that prefer Aom over Aoe2, especially because of the iconic campaign and variation in Gameplay. The biggest downside of Aom currently is that the graphics didn't age that well. With a remade Game this problem should be gone. So never say never.

as much as i would love byzantine content, we already have Bari (meaning we likely wont see another), and Romans would be difficult as the Romans in AOE2 are starting with Theodosius the First and the western Roman Empire did not have a lot of major campaigns that have not already been covered in some way (alaric and attila campaigns both cover probably the two most interesting parts left in the western Roman empire that come together as a cohesive story, the closest i could see to a roman one working would be maybe playing as Stilicho but that would be a stretch and narratively be tonally strange I think given how it was not very "Roma Invicta" more like "Roma hanging on by a thread being played like a puppet by Germanic generals".
Loads of user generated content exists for Byzantine and Roman scenarios though so we are not left wanting!

    For AoE 2 --
A Byzantine Campaign set for the Komnenian Restoration would be interesting
Allying with the Turks while fighting the Normans in Greece and elsewhere only to then later call for the Pope to ask the Normans to come back to deal with the Turks years later and kick off the 1st Crusade (hek, can even have it narrated by Anna Komnena)
    For AoE 3 --
The US Civ started as a Revolution only option before being its own thing, same for Mexico
Totally possible some of the other Revolution only options become separate Civs
    For AoM --
Just getting it released and updated without any extras would likely generate a lot of revenue and excitement and I think it might be nearly as popular as AoE 2 in the long run (and meteoric in the short run)

Mods change the unit skin for all civilizations as of now. For example, a knight reskin will change the knight for every civilization, in this case its not possible to have regional variations because so far it doesn't seem possible to change unit skins of generic units(like knights militia line, archers etc) only for specific civ or regional civs.
The fact that monks and trade carts have separate skins for separate civs but other units don't makes it more likely that its just not possible to do so, especially when a lot of such units are already in the game like Eastern swordsman, nord warrior etc.

So I imagine in the upcoming DLC, we could see some new Asian civs, such as Korea, Siam, Tibet or Burma. I for one would love to see the game give us some Southeast Asia representation. I’d like ta briefly respond to your offhand statement of AoE3 DE’s Revolution mechanic burning through potential dlc civs. You may not know or remember, but several of our currently-playable civs in the game used to be only accessible via Revolution, and at least one still is - the United States is the most obvious example here, as several of the European civs can Revolt into the United States despite them being a fully-playable Civ in their own right that came in their own dedicated dlc.
Basically, I’m trying to make the argument that just because a Civ is accessible via Revolt doesn’t mean it won’t be a fully playable Civ later.

    Speaking as Polish myself
i once discussed a Polish civ in AoE3 with my friend and we came to this conclusions
This could be an early game civ that would sound OP and the start but then advancing to next ages will come with some debuffs to reflect the state of Commonwealth that led to it's downfall which resulted in partitions between 1772 and 1795.

They could do one focused on something like the Thirty Years War, Frederick the Great, the Fall of the Ming Dynasty, the Taiping or Boxer Rebellions, The War of the Triple Alliance, Louis XIV. So much stuff, and so much variety for the 15th-19th century setting.

Aoe 2, Aoe 3, and Aoe 4, could really do with a water 🌊 rework, as water balance is a mess and lacks depth.
I think major positive changes would be for Aoe 2 would be
    • fire ships having trample damage like Siege Elephants and Siege Rams so they remain relevant against mass galleys
    • galleys being nerfed (they are always going to be useful for attacking land units, so they should not also dominate in military battles)
    • siege units having a higher attack damage versus ships
    • transport ships being better, getting an upgrade, ideally so that landings happen, but cannot win the game by themselves so the gameplay is more multi-dimensional
    • Habours being a universal upgrade (make the Malay have better ones).
    For Aoe 4:
    • Add in fish 🐟 farms. They existed in the time period and it would make the payoffs for water not being so front-loaded. Plus, they are fun. For balance I might add:
    • Available in dark age for 100 wood
    • Can have their cost reduced to 75 wood with a feudal age upgrade of 50 food and 50 wood
    • Has an effective gather rate equal to farms
    • Are affected by mill upgrades
    • Docks ⚓ can have any ship garrison in them
    • Docks ⚓ fire arrows which only hit ships when garrisoned
    • Naval Arrowslits reduced in price to match Arrowslits
    • New ship available from the dark age, the boarding ship (they existed in the time frame of the game).
    • It deals melee damage, but loses health over time when un-garrisoned in the water (like irl ship decay)
    • It cannot attack buildings
    • It has medium levels of attack and high health and armour
    • The boarding ship gets unit upgrades all the way to Imperial (hardened, veteran, elite)
This type of unit is great for defence, but pretty bad for offence as it will just die if you try and use your water victory for anything
    • Dock health regeneration now heals units out of combat for double the rate (6 hp/second) and in combat at 3 hp/second
    • Dock health regeneration has a technology or multiple to make it better at healing allied ships
    • Docks ⚓ can be fortified with more emplacements.
    • Dock ⚓ build time reduced to 10 seconds. This makes it much easier to rush up a dock if you lose the water to come back on it.
    • Military ship repair cost reduced to be equal to repairing siege and civilian ships. The defending player can retreat their ships to land to repair them.
    • Docks ⚓ gain a few eco techs which help on land as well, representing knowledge gained from the sea
    • Docks ⚓ can be upgraded in the Imperial Age at the university to be able to fire onto land units
    • Fishing boat repair speed increased to that of villagers
    • Fishing boats are able to garrison 1 unit, to make landing more of a possibility, without being too annoying to defend from, as you can just rush villagers at the landing. It also makes them more useful when the fish runs out as you can bypass walls that way and be sneaky.
    • Transport ships and archer ships merged into one unit with the ability to attack and garrison (like actual military transport ships). Balanced so landings are possible, but unlikely to win the game by themselves.
That way the metagame is a lot less snowball-y and more nuanced.

Campaign-focused =/= campaign-only. It is possible we get a civ or two, similar to how Romans were added with Return of Rome.
I don't think it makes sense counting Magyars and Slavs as having a campaign because of Vlad Dracula. Simply because it barely amounts to two scenarios each. That campaign is more of a stand-in to cover more civs, rather than a campaign dedicated to any civ in particular.
A fun two-four combo would be Poland-Lithuania and Austria-Hungary, although the latter was simply the Austrian Empire in the AoE3 time period. IIRC, there were some sort of Polish revolution options available in the game files, although it's been a long time since I saw that leak. Also the Danish, if I'm remembering this correctly. So I'll hazard a guess it's Poland-Lithuania and Denmark? Honestly, the one civ that makes sense based on pre-existing assets would be the Moroccans, who exist by that name + Barbary Coast in Historical Battles, so that's another possibility.
Hard to imagine Mythology getting a new civ on release. Simply because a single civ in Mythology has a greater variety in gameplay compared to any other Age of game. The closest one to its complexity might be AoE3, when it smacks civs and continent-dependent additions at the same time.

  • @BlueShellshock

I missed AoM. It didn't hold up in terms of looks, but I liked the units better than in AoE2. You had your human units with their own rock paper scissors, but you also had the myth units that could wreck human units, and the heroes who could bring them down. It was a great little dynamic. I miss playing Norse and being able to build with infantry -- AoE2 Sicillians don't scratch that same itch.
Just... I'm not sure even Atlanteans were a great addition since the mythology overlaps with Greek, and the Chinese were iffy in both their storytelling AND their gameplay.

Honestly, even though Poland is really popular, we just got a Euro expansion but haven't had any more Asian civs in all of AoE3 DE, so I'd put my money on Persia&Korea. Alternatively, a south African civ like Zulus and or maybe turning Berbers into a full civ, replacing the minor civ with the Tuareg. They could also make Brasil a full civ following USA& Mexico.
Or it's no civ at all, just more campaigns.

Aoe2 de lacks a campaign for Slavs and Magyars too, since they have just 2 and 3 missions in total, respectively -> Dracula campaign had Turks in mission 1 as well, and you have 2 battles with Turks too, so it makes no sense to count Turks as having no dedicated campaign, but to count Magyars and Slavs to have it.
Furthermore, Celts technically have no proper campaign, too, and so i'd say that the best approach would be:
    1) campaign packs for all the civs you mentioned (except for Romans - see point 3)
    2) Vlachs civilisation (played in Dracula) + new Salvs and Magyars campaigns
    3) Add a Celts/Roman campaign - 4 missions as Romans, 2 as Celts (similar to El Cid)
that would properly utilize all the civs

As a Korean fan, It would be very nice to have a brand new scenario with Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. And if the scenario is based in the East Asian War, those three civs can tied in one close, dramatic historical narrative!
There was East Asian War(Korean called it "임진왜란Imjin War") between Chosun(Korea), Ming(China), and Japan in 1592~1598(yes, a hundred years after Columbus), that Toyotomi Hideyoshi of Japan invaded Korea, and also had a war with China.
This war was very decisive moment for east Asian history(aftermath of this war, Ming dynasty changed to Qing), and also our favourite admiral Yi Sun-sin and the Turtle ship also appeared in this war.
(Of course, I would like to see another historical scenario! like Japan's 戰國時代Sengoku Jidai, and so on. Hope to see the new DLC with east asian civs!)

while AOE 2 may not run into the general meta balancing issue (most common with 3 factions) since past 14 factions with 3 possible playstyles each there is no minmaxing anymore. i belive it is good for them to Take a break of making new civs and figuring out new posible unit mechanics. they have been playing around with them in the last DLCs (gold at attack, Small area of attacks on melee at radius and line, mobile gatheringcamps aso) we are reaching the point where new unit mechanics might force a overall civ rework since only the newer civs get the newer mechanics. Here are my top 5 unit, tech and building additions. 1. Labor elephants that can cut down trees whole for some of the elephant civs. 2. Terraced farms wich you can only build on hills or cliffs but they give more food. 3. Rocket arrows that do more damage to siege from buildings as a university tech. (counter to siegetowers) 4. Wandering Traders to move the trade ratios if they reach a market or that can be killed for Gold. (to introduce a level of RNG to the Economy and prevent snowballing) 5. a Wonder that can be build on Water.

For Age of Mythology: Retold I feel like Celts or Persia would be the best options since both have a wide range of familiar mythological creatures as well as a varied enough human army.
Because the myth units are something to consider as well for them on top of how interesting their human soldiers would be.
It's why Romans are very unlikely, they have the interesting human army but lack the myth units since it's mostly copied from Greeks.
Aztecs would be a very poor choice for that reason too. Historically they already lack ships, siege and cavalry. They don't have enough myth units either.
Japan could also work well though I think, they do have plenty of familiar myth units and would make China less isolated.

@@KhanWolf95 That sounds like a good mechanic. Although them gaining favor through fighting is too similar to the Norse. I think what should happen is. Whenever Aztecs kill enemy units, they have a chance of turning them into "tributes", which is similar to the disciples Chinese monks can sometimes spawn when they kill enemies in AOE3. These "tributes" can be treated like livestock in that when they are brought to the temple, they can be "sacrificed" for some favor. Brian Boru would be very fun as a Celtic campaign
Tokugawa Ieyasu for a Japanese campaign (and follow on from Nobunaga and his historical battle quite nicely) although maybe a bit too recent for AoE2
Harald Hardrade for a Viking campaign (i also think he would make an insane netflix series too, he was everywhere)
Sviatoslav for a Slav campaign (would be very fun because there would be a fun mix of being overwhelmed by sheer numbers and cavalry against Pechenegs and then facing staunch fortresses against the Eastern Romans) could potentially continue on to Vladimir the Great if there isnt enough in Sviatoslav alone (although I think there is)
Those are realistic for "no proper campaign or no campaign at all" (i dont consider william wallace a proper campaign and slavs, magyars and turks deserve full campaigns tbh)
and yes, my wishlist is quite western focused, i know, my knowledge of chinese and korean history from anytime not pre 500CE or post 1700CE is miserable.

In AoE3 land, Poles are kind of a meme at this point. They’re basically the civ everyone is expecting, taking that title from Italy after that civ was added a year and a half ago. It doesn’t help that Poles (and Denmark) seem to have been planned as revolutions to be added last year, but we’re scrapped.
Still, based on how the prior dlcs have gone, I don’t think Poles and Persians would come as a package. I would expect if it’s two (or more) civs in one dlc, then it’s probable they’ll be of the same region/archetype. For that reason, my guess is it would be Persians and Koreans. Maybe it’s a stretch to call civs on opposite ends of the largest continent in the same region, but Hausa and Ethiopia were released together. Both Persia and Korea would be popular legacy picks (from AoE2) and could be rendered in the TAD style civ, with Wonders and the Consulate etc. In a way, it’s surprising such a civ wasn’t released at DE’s launch. Central Asia and the Mid East is also one of the few regions left without many maps.
Poles might be slated as a stand-alone civ however. Again, based on prior releases, a possible schedule is a solo civ in the spring and a larger duo pack in the fall. Another candidate for a solo civ may be Morocco.
There has been some speculation about Canada and/or Brazil, continuing in the Federal New World archetype established by USA and Mexico, but I’d personally be against it. Not that “the timeline” seems to matter much to people, but USA and Mexico were already pushing it for me as being much too recent, and would’ve been content leaving them as revolts. But Canada and Brazil are more recent still! It doesn’t help these new world civs blur the line between a nation/people/culture vs state/government, the former I’d contend is the true heart of an AoE civ since the first game.

If they do make some variety missions for the AOE2 DLC, you know what battle I would REALLY want them to include?
The Battle on the Ice - it's the battle depicted in the film Alexander Nevsky. It was probably the one thing that the original game didn't have any representation for. They wouldn't even need to introduce any new civs - they have the Slavs to represent the Russian side (The Novgorod Republic) and the Teutons to represent the Teutonic Order. I could understand them not including it in the original game on the grounds that they might not have felt like they had any good civs to represent the Russian side (and it wouldn't make much sense to play as the Teutons), but now? Not so much.

I am looking forward to the AoM most, but I have always been on the side that the original balance of greeks, norse and Egyptians was the best, and both atlantis and china were mistakes in that respect. Oh well, my main hope is to play through the campaign in that game as it is my favorite single campaign, followed by Age of Empires III's main campaign.

Cant speak for chinese, but the Atlantean Campaign was pretty good, technically letting us 'visit' all the places we have been decades later and reintroduction of old characters (defying the likes of Ajax and Amanra? In Kastors earlier misguided rage, and then proceedimg to ally with them that as cool), and it brought conclusion to the original story!

I really, really, really hope we get Celts in Retold. I'm not exactly optimistic, but I'd love it so much. I think there's a lot of really cool stuff they could pull from those stories.

Age of mythology they replace the Chinese who never worked with the Japanese and they also add the Celtic mythos Germanic mythos and Slavic mythos.

Age of Mythology Retold is what I am most looking forward to seeing. Loved the original.

AOE 3 is most likely gonna be Poland-Lithuania and Denmark as their flag were both leaked during a patch not long ago

For what it's worth, I would have no problem with the $10 price point, as long as the DLC doesn't just feel like it's the same as a new-civ DLC, but just missing the new civs. So for example, if the campaign-only DLC's campaigns were longer, or if there were 4 or 5 campaigns instead of 3, then I wouldn't mind the price

Imagine a new AoM campaign where there is an oracle and you get to play as a future civ from AoE either 2, 3 or 4

Had no clue they announced this. Love the idea of campaign DLC and hope it succeeds. I want all civs to have a campaign eventually and we're never getting there if only 1 gets added every DLC.

I'm hoping Age of Mythology: Retold makes all of the god powers on cooldowns instead of one-time use with China's having charges. Cooldowns would make them much easier to balance and make them feel more like your patron gods are actually present the whole match instead of just handing you one-off nuclear options and walking away.

Interestingly, I reckon you could have a stab at Orthodox/Catholicism as a counter/tech faction. You’d use saints for the minor deities, who might provide buffs or debuffs against certain myth unit types (for example Patrick vs Snakes/Serpents and related creatures), and for unique units you could do things like St. George’s dragon, the tarrasque, etc.
As far as Major Deities go, either picking a branch (say Orthodox vs Catholicism to provide different saints) or Old Testament (Direct Damage) vs New Testament (Buffs/Support).
    Just a couple of ideas!

For AoE 2 I would love them to announce:
Greater focus on community features in game to really make it more social (like clans are literally cosmetic atm, tg lobby's disbanding after every game still???)
TG performance overhaul to really make an improvement to late game 10 fps gameplay, I don't know how this has gone under the devs radar for so long tbh.
Ofc the general pathing and feel of the game with unit control can use a lot of work. ATM it does not feel good at all to control stuff and when the whole game revolves around using units ... yea it ain't a good look.
Extra campaign packs would also be enjoyable for many people

I would really like to see building "rotation" (I know the engine can't allow that), and more building facade (if it can be done to Houses then I guess it can be done to other buildings too).
MOBAs like Dota 2 was able to get that sweet spot where a hero can look different enough (a child and gender swap version), but is still recognizable enough even when things get quite chaotic. I trust the devs can make it happen.
This thing might not be that practical or mindblowing in PvP, but for those of us who love to play the campaigns, this is something nice. I know I purposfully extend game time just so I can decorate my place lol.

Can they please give us the finished and previously cut Kaesong (Koreans) campaign 😢
As someone who graduated in Koreanstudies and who's fascinated by Korean history, this would mean a lot to me.
