What most people don't know about Ethiopia is that they were Jewish too since the days of Egypt. Elephantine Island on the river Nile is where many Ethiopians used to worship (before Egyptian wars forced then to migrate down south the Nile) has been found to have a Temple with the exact dimensions as the 1st Solomonic Temple. The Ethiopian one dates back to before or about the same time as well. Looks like God had a backup plan. Anti sacrifice Egyptians that worshiped a Ram headed God forced the Ethiopian Jews out of Elephantine Island forcing them down south via the Blue Nile to the General Area Ethiopians Inhabit today. Many of these monuments were destroyed between 525 and 522 B.C. on the orders of Cambyses II, king of Persia and heir to Cyrus the Great

And Ethiopian Judaism opened the door to their early reception of Christ, because these exilic Jews in Ethiopia did not have the Jerusalem temple leaders’ hatred of Him. This process of conversion remains to be proven by scholars but it makes sense. The Georgians converted in 325 AD and the Armenians before them in 300. Early Georgian culture was influenced by Syriac and exilic Judaism as was Armenian. Ethiopia had a parallel cultural amalgam at the time and readily converted to Christianity in the early IV c.

It’s essentially an ethnic group that has developed in American soil and is therefore native there. The reason they’re called ‘Black’ is because the ethnic group developed in a context where they were enslaved due to their skin colour/rayce. If they had developed more naturally then they’d likely have adopted a different name as other ethnic groups did elsewhere but it is what it is. The confusion comes due to the fact that black (without a capital) is also used to refer to a racial grouping of people with sub-Saharan ancestry but they’re not equal. I am a father of six with one wife. I have been preaching the gospel in the streets since 2014, as the Holy Ghost has given me charge. As the Lord is my hope, we have seen quite a few people come to the Lord, even begun, putting their hands to the plow. Praise the Lord!
I find it necessary to dig deeper into church history, and the earlier events of the church. Especially in Africa. I have been able to defend the faith from the biblical standpoint decently. But I need to go deeper. To create a firmer place to stand on issues , that will need a greater explanation. We’ve won souls to the simple and simplicity of preaching the gospel. We’ve charge people to repent from being in error pertaining, the gospel of the Lord Jesus. Now I believe it is time also to go deeper in study so that way I can be better in defending the faith apologetically. I am almost full-time ministering in the streets. But I want to subscribe to study. How do I do such a thing?

I hear and understand your heart, but Dr. Bantu stated, that these additional books, confirm what’s said in the 66 books in the Bible’s most of us have/use! So don’t lose heart related to what “nefarious” scheme Europeans had for leaving out those additional books! We can speculate, but it may be as simple as wanting to differentiate from the Catholic church as he said. As long as you know Christ as Lord, we need not stress ourselves over that, but let those additional books add to our knowledge and love of Him and each other. And a word for me, was to study more those 66 as I as possibly read the 81! Because, side note, a lot of us don’t know those as well as we should!! Stay encouraged!!

In 2 Maccabees 12, Judas Maccabees is praised for sacrificing to the dead, something God never commanded (See Leviticus 101-3.
Judas Maccabees is said to have been slain in 152 during the reign of Seleucide in Mac. 9:3; but 2 Mac. 1:10 he writes a letter to Aristobulus in the year 188, 36 years after his death.
Tobit 6:8 And the angel, answering, said to him: If thou put a little piece of its heart upon coals, the smoke thereof driveth away all kind of devils, either from man or from woman, so that they come no more to them.”
Is it true that the smoke from a fish’s heart, when burned, drives away evil spirits? Of course not. Such a superstitious teaching has no place in the word of God.
Teaches that forgiveness of sins is by human effort.
    Salvation by works:
    • Tobit 4:11, “For alms deliver from all sin, and from death, and will not suffer the soul to go into darkness.”
    • Tobit 12:9, “For alms delivereth from death, and the same is that which purgeth away sins, and maketh to find mercy and life everlasting.”
We know from Scripture that alms (money or food given to the poor or needy as charity) does not purge our sins. The blood of Christ is what cleanses us - not money or food given to poor people. “But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin,” (1 John 1:7).
Money as an offering for the sins of the dead:
2 Maccabbees 12:43, “And making a gathering, he sent twelve thousand drachms of silver to Jerusalem for sacrifice to be offered for the sins of the dead, thinking well and religiously concerning the resurrection.”
Can anyone truly accept that money isn’t offering for the sins of dead people? Such a superstitious and unbiblical concept has no place in Scripture.
    Historical Errors
    Wrong historical facts:
    • Judith 1:5, “Now in the twelfth year of his reign, Nabuchodonosor, king of the Assyrians, who reigned in Ninive the great city, fought against Arphaxad and overcame him.”
    • Baruch 6:2, “And when you are come into Babylon, you shall be there many years, and for a long time, even to seven generations: and after that I will bring you away from thence with peace.”
The book of Judith incorrectly says that Nebuchadnezzar was the king of the Assyrians when he was the king of the Babylonians.1
Baruch 6:2 says the Jews would serve in Babylon for seven generations where Jer. 25:11 says it was for 70 years. “And this whole land shall be a desolation and a horror, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.”
    Conclusion
Obviously, the Apocrypha has serious problems. From magic to salvation by works, to money as an offering for the sins of the dead, and blatant incorrect historical facts - it is full of false and unbiblical teachings. It isn’t inspired by God. Likewise, neither is the Roman Catholic Church, which has stated the Apocrypha is inspired. This shows the Roman Catholic Church is not the means by which God is communicating his truth to his people, that the Magisterium has erred greatly, and that it is infested with man’s false tradition rather than God’s absolute truth.
The books themselves are contradictory, and chronologically inaccurate. They introduce characters which are fables, they contradict not only themselves but also the Holy Scriptures. They are not inspired, and not included in the canon by most of the early fathers and no council approved them with any degree of prudence. These differences are irreconcilable.

If I’m not mistaken Jesus and the New Testament actually do quote from Enoch and other extra-biblical books. The reason why we shouldn’t consider them scripture is bc Jesus and the Hebrews didn’t. This isn’t to say they aren’t reliable, or good or important to read, but it is to say they weren’t inspired. I take the same position as the late Dr. Michael Heiser “a book doesn’t have to be in the Bible or inspired to be important and worth reading” that’s my paraphrase.

I'm exploring so-called "extra-Biblical texts", and when you mentioned that the Ethiopian Bible contains 81 books including Jubilees and Enoch, it occurred to me that 81 (the number of books in the Ethiopian Bible) = 9². The number 9 is generally accepted by theologians and scholars as the number of divine completeness and finality. We know Jubilees, Enoch, and even the book of Jasher were, at one time, included in the Israelite canon because fragments of those books were discovered in the caves near Qumr'an. I've read Enoch, Jubilees, Jasher, Maccabees, Wisdom, Surach, and the other books you mentioned, so I need to get myself a copy of the Ethiopian Bible to see if there are other books my collection is missing. If the total number of books in the Ethiopian Bible is, indeed, 81 (and I have no reason to disbelieve you), that, in my mind anyway, could symbolize ultimate completion, since God seems to work with mathematical symbols often.

As I understand it, the apocryphal, or deuterocanonical, books were included in the King James Version of the Bible until the late 1800s, but publishers wanted to sell more Bibles, so they removed the apocryphal books to facilitate this, reasoning that since they weren’t considered canon, they weren’t needed.

  • @mikescupien988
    @mikescupien988 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

As a Protestant, my understanding of the Apocrypha is they were included in the Septuagint Greek translation Circa B.C. 250-200 and Jerome's Latin Vulgate translation Circa A.D. 382-384. However, Jerome called them "Books of the Church", not canon. Earlier (240 A.D.), Eusebius and Origen affirmed most of the current OT as conical, but none of the Apocrypha. Josephus wrote they were "not worthy of equal credit..." Historically, they did not officially become canon until the Council of Trent in 1546, coincidentally the year that Martin Luther died. So Protestants technically did not exclude them because they were not scripture until that date! They were not made a part of the bible because: 1) in the 295 times the OT was quoted by Jesus and the Apostles, no quotes were from the Apocrypha. 2) The Jews do not accept the Apocrypha. 3) And doctrinal differences such as purgatory, prayers for the dead (to get a transfer to heaven), and justification by faith alone. Thus, they are not given equal standing. But rather than disagree on how historically accurate any of this is, one thing is certain: our salvation rests in Jesus!

  • @lark8356

Grace and Peace to you. I enjoy Dr. Bantu, but I'm disappointed that he won't acknowledge that the deuterocanon is littered with theological issues. Agreed. Salvation by works, purgatory and pre-existence of the soul are among them. Along with historical errors that the inspired books don't make.
Unfortunately Vince Bantu was asked to address an area he's not expert in and made some pretty basic mistakes.

    • @TheThinkersBible
      @TheThinkersBible ปีที่แล้ว +6

Another very serious problem is Bantu's false equivalence regarding Protestantism and slavery. The fact is -- the Protestant canon was determined 100-200 years before the mass chattel slave trade as we know it started.
So, contrary to Bantu's claims, the Protestant canon itself had absolutely *nothing* to do with slavery. Nothing.
Also, church involvement in slavery itself was started by the Catholic Church in the 1400s. Not by Protestants. That's 100 years before the Reformation even began. And the Catholic Church has an expanded canon Bantu is so fond of.
So he's dead wrong about that too.
Overall he's great. But on questions of Bible canon history and church history outside of Africa unfortunately he's out of his depth.

@@lark8356 Grace and Peace to you as well. Not Martin Luther specifically because Luther wanted to exclude Jude and a few other books because they didn't agree with his theology.
It's the general recognition by many up to Luther's day that the deuterocanon was not held in the same esteem by important authorities in the early church, nor by the Jews.
Martin Luther didn't make the final decision to remove them. After Luther, in 1611 the King James translators placed the deuterocanon between the Old and New Testaments. In 1685 it was removed to avoid confusion.

From one historian to another: you explained it very well. We must understand the choices of selection books and translations they all were predicated on political power and societal control. The protestants were opposing the power of the king and the position of the pope . And remember that the Europeans who were just introduced to scriptures attempt to control the bible as a eroupean contruct and reinforced it by the crusades which had very impact on the promiseland. Thus in every country the European enter he entered with the Catholics bible and destruction of those in a un godly manner.
And the bible is not regarded for salvation bt in order to maintain in the presence of God one must study the word of God and pray that the holy spirit will guide you.......
History, world history is important that we might know that the white overtones/pictures are a new phenomenon and that africican knew and praised God before the European was introduced to civilization.

If you were baking a cake that called for 8 ingredients but you only used 6 or 4, or were to lessen measurements, would it be the same cake?
Regardless of reason for taking out ingredients (gluten free, diabetes, personal taste) it would not be the same. It would indeed be something different.
I feel the same stands for ANY book that is picked over to produce another book by the same name. Because we know the Ethiopian Bible IS IN FACT the first bible, it should be the one that is read. Although the Ge’ez is an old language only used in liturgy doesnt mean it cant be translated into English, Mandarin, Russian or any other language.
With so many translation apps and even films/tv shows creating new futuristic languages, it should not be rocket science, especially sense it was already partially translated 2-3 times in various languages.
Is it a must have to get the Ge’ez translated into other languages? Yes.
To quote scripture as saying that Jesus is the word, but to only present a bible that gives partial insight is as good as Ikea selling furniture with only 6 steps out of the 10 needed to build the structure. Granted that dining room table will be necessary in helping to nourish your family and bring together community, but if you cant set it up properly and have to worry about it breaking down and causing injury, then it wont be worth it.
Let’s get out of the centuries of habit of accepting partial product for truth. You wouldn’t purposely purchase or eat a piece of fruit from a partially naturally grown tree, then why accept partial versions of the Christian bible.

Very informative. Great summary of the Ethiopian Bible vs Protestant Bible. Unfortunately Dr. Bantu does sort of gloss over some problems with the extended canons. The problems are real and are not Protestant inventions. The Jews as he briefly mentioned didn't accept these extra books and never considered them inspired and authoritative even before the first century. And Enoch in particular adds a lot to the word of God -- and could not possibly have been written by Enoch. Plus there actually ARE serious doctrinal errors taught in the apocryphal books -- pre-existence of souls, salvation by works, purgatory among them. Plus additions to the word of God like the angels/demons/Nephilim stories that presume to speak where scripture is silent. Finally, there are verifiable historical errors, which is not true of the Bible. So it's wonderful to know about the Ethiopian canon but just because it's African doesn't automatically make it right, and just because it came from Europeans doesn't automatically make it wrong. Peace.

    • @gfujigo
      @gfujigo ปีที่แล้ว +12

Interesting points. I want to share the following thoughts.
First, the Jews also do not accept the New Testament, the gospel, that Jesus is the Messiah nor the teachings of Christ. So that fact that the Jews reject a book is not any indication of whether a book should be included in the Bible.
Second, to claim that a book not in the Protestant cannon speaks where scripture is silent is to presume the Protestant cannon is in fact the standard cannon. The Protestant cannon has various problems of its own including omitting books that Christendom held to for more than a millennium, and frequently reinterpreting and translating scripture to conform with Protestant ideology.
Your point that just because something comes from Europe doesn’t mean it’s bad is true.

    • @TheThinkersBible
      @TheThinkersBible ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@gfujigo fair points to raise, but that's not why I was saying those things.
First, the books in question are not New Testament books. They're included in Old Testament canons of ancient churches.
Second, the books in question were never universally considered inspired and authoritative by the Jews. Jesus and the apostles never quoted from them (except one reference in Jude, which is why Jude was disputed for awhile).
The Jews had a 22 book set of recognized inspired writings. That's the 39 we have in the Old Testament now.
Third, the early church (which quickly became mostly Gentile) adopted the larger canon because the Jews included them -- without accounting for the fact that the Jews saw those additional books quite differently.
And even then, it took many centuries and different churches adopted different sets of them. Yet all adopted the 39. That speaks volumes.
And although some church fathers considered them inspired, many church fathers (eg Jerome) didn't put them on par with scripture.
Over time that changed, but again not for a long time.
So it's actually the contrary -- just because they were eventually (and unevenly) included in canons doesn't mean they were inspired scripture (canon and inspiration are actually different things).

Your viewing the books through the lens of your current doctrine.
      That's the issue.
You have to be truly objective when researching these things.
      No preconceived bias.
Part of your doctrine for example is to omit Saturday Sabbath in place for First Day Rest (Sunday).
That alone exposes everything about most Christian doctrines.
Sunday Rest is a deception doctrine.
The angels in the Tomb of Messiah said "He has RISEN as He said" that early Sunday morning.
Jesus was cruxified Wednesday....3 days from then is SATURDAY Rising.
Mary rested on Saturday per Torah Law.
So she went to the Tomb Sunday morning.
Jesus had already Risen....not that Sunday morning, but yesterday, during THE SABBATH.
Yet Protestant & Catholic and other churches have been deceived into a DOCTRINE of Sunday Rest....dangerous for us to maintain this Sunday doctrine now that we know it's deception.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Church keeps Saturday Sabbath.

You only want to say it's not about skin color when it benefits you. There are many scriptures in the bible where it's about skin color. If it's not about skin color then why did Europeans white wash the Bible. He definitely did Not have blonde hair and Blue eyes. You're the one who's racist.

The dream given to John found in the Book of Revelation tells us the Bible is not the Word of God, so this is a bit of a mute point. None of the books, scrolls, or letters written by humans are the Word of God even if they might contain the Words of God. The Book of Revelation says the Word of God is God and that Word is Jesus. Jesus is the Word of God and only what he taught is the Word of God. The Words of God must come directly from God and Jesus is God.

Except without the Bible our faith is rooted in nothing. Revelation is in the Bible homie. So I guess that verse you just referred to is meaningless huh?

@@codmatterk Actually that is not true. If you seek God you will find him. The Bible contains the teachings of Jesus, thus it contains the Words of God, but not every teaching in the Bible comes from God or are his teachings. Any writings that counter the teachings of Jesus are not the teachings of God. But, even if you did not have the Bible and you seek after God, you can find him because a part of him is already inside of you, your soul is his breathe. Without God's breathe, nothing lives, and you have been made in the image of God, so you are more connected to God than you even know. You only need to look inside and find that part of you that is pure love to find God. But, most people fail to do that so Jesus came. And most still are failing, so Jesus will come again. The only teaching you need to know is the one commandment Jesus gave to simplify all the Law of God. Love one another as I have loved you even your enemies. Jesus gave his life for everyone so there would be a path from death to enternal life even for his enemies, thus if we love others and God the way God loves us, we will never break any of the Ten Commandments or harm other people in any way.

How can you be saved without baptism when Jesus said in Mark 16:16 "He who believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned"? If Jesus tied belief and baptism together to salvation; then how can one be saved by just believeing?
