    Pretty sure OneDrive is a close second for value. For ~$8 a month you not only do you get MS Office, but you also get 2TB of storage PER PERSON with family sharing. Most family sharing plans share the overall storage amount.

    • @TheStevenWhiting
      @TheStevenWhiting 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You only get 1TB per person according to their site in the UK. Assume same everywhere else.

      @@TheStevenWhiting "Only". On the other hand, you can link the accounts together, so you can use 6 TB, which is pretty amazing. I thought about iDrive as an alternative, but for me MS has a far better reputation as a company behind the cloud...

    • @Ishikawa-Goemon
      @Ishikawa-Goemon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @I killed that beard guy It's only a few steps:
      1. You need to share the necessary folders with the main account. You can simple put everything under a single folder (I mean the whole directory structure) and in this case you have to share only this folder.
      2. There is a menu item on the left side in your main account (in every accounts actually) which called "shared", "shared items" or something like that. I'm a bit unsure about the name, because I use UI with my own language.
      3. Right click on this specific shared item and there is an option which like "add shortcut" and that's it. After it you can see the shortcut and you can browse the other drive.

    OneDrive for work and iCloud for personal
    If you have kids or love to take a lot of video/pictures, iPhone with iCloud is the best since it will free up the space on your iDevice when the space is running low, you don’t have to delete or lower the resolution manually.
    As for OneDrive, it works best with Office 365 e3 or office family plan.

    You forgot to mention security on the cloud providers. Sync offers true E2EE (end to end encryption). pCloud also offers this, but at a premium. The other providers hold users encryption keys. IDrive is great for price, but when you read further in their details, they have ok encryption services and they give you the option to change how the encryption keys are held. This is crucial when choosing a cloud provider as privacy is critical in today’s tech age.

      Great point. I used Dropbox for years and loved it because it's rock-solid and fast. I eventually switched to Sync though because with my freelance work I store customer data, and Dropbox makes no bones about using your data (or metadata) for marketing purposes. Sync has end-to-end encryption and zero-based knowledge, which is my main concern. It's much slower than Dropbox though, so you have to bite the bullet on that. I may check out pCloud again after watching this video, since performance looks better than it does with Sync.

    • @graytonw5238
      @graytonw5238 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Id x Sync keeps the files encrypted on their end, and they're a Canadian company, not beholden to US laws. Not that I store anything illegal, but it's just an extra protection for user data. I would imagine the free version works the same, except that you get only 5 GB, which isn't much.

    I've been a Dropbox user for years and I've used OneDrive and Google Drive. When it comes to consistency and reliability, I'll go with Dropbox any and every day. Mind you, I have a very specific use case. I use Dropbox primarily for my photography storage as a secondary aspect to my backups along with local NAS. Also, this is how I share photos with my clients. I've never had an issue with it and it pays for itself.

    The Apple iCloud storage system is confusing for a system that is meant to be integrated. I only used it briefly when my iPhone's storage got full when I was on holiday. It wasn't straightforward to download all that data back to my computer's drive. It was difficult to know whether it was on my phone or in the sky and if I was about to delete it by accident or not.

    • @jackwong64
      @jackwong64 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      iCloud is an cloud storage, it doesn’t backup the data back to your pc. You should’ve seen a message about you can’t use iTunes and iCloud to backup your iPhone at the same time.
      If you have a lot of picture you will have to turn on optimize iPhone storage under settings > photo.
      Just TH-cam a iCloud walkthrough video.

  • @angelsv
    @angelsv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    Here is my two cents why you should avoid Apple's iCloud. Try saving your videos and pictures from the camera roll to a folder in your iCloud Drive, and it will take ages, days to sync. You might see then in the iPhone, but at least in my case, I didn't see all the videos and pictures while accessing them from my Mac Mini M1. From 114 items, only synced 68. After waiting 5 hours and trying to figure out with the help of Google why it was taking so long, basically troubleshooting everything. I discover that it's a common 'issue' reported everywhere, but seems like Apple doesn't seem to care to fix.

Also, integration into photo displaying devices such as Google Home (Nest Home) or TV displays or computers in screen saver mode. I recently tried uploading an 8.72Gb uncompressed .MOV file to Google Drive (I had more than sufficient space on Google Drive). However, during the upload process, it inexplicably, without asking permission, compressed the file down to an unusable, pixelated mess at a mere 500Mb!! I specifically needed to pass the full, uncompressed video to someone who was adding audio to the project ... and he needed the high resolution uncompressed file, otherwise each time we shared the file, it would be re-compressed multiple times. I've searched online for Google Drive to reach a support email or chat window with no luck, just the usual corporate run me in circles, taking me to unrelated, irrelevant online articles but never reaching a Support contact.
    Do you have any idea how to stop this from happening, without having to zip each file before uploading? I've not yet checked to see if it does the same thing with uncompressed high resolution Tiff images.

    Are there any variations to those prices or discounts you’re providing for someone in Canada? And a second issue do you have any suggestion regarding iPad storage stated as full when it’s not at all? Tried multiple ways to reset after upgrade to 15.3.1 . Thank you for your video I watched it a few times to try to decide lol

    Hi Pete, I find your review and presentation excellent, focusing clearly on what's important. Just one question....I am an expat ( teacher) working in China. Yeah...with all that that entails. I do use VPN services quite successfully for all essential connections, and wonder what the implications would be for signing up for any of these services you reviewed. Would I be able to use these services safely...on normal open broadband ( without VPN ), because they are encrypted? Or would I have to connect via a VPN, which would choke the upload download speeds, heavily impacting the ability to use cloud storage effectively? Hope you might be able to shed some light on it for me. Regards, Peter

    12:38 onwards - you talk about sync and the teams option, but then conclude by stating 'pcloud is basically the one to check out' - is this not meant to reference sync?

    What storage would you recommend for video editors where we need huge amount of storage for passing back and forth raw files. I ise ftp normally, as it has resume, but not as convenient as the cloud storage. However I found all cloud storage struggling with files larger than 4GB where they stop downloading and when you try resume it start from scratch again.

    OneDrive only syncs Desktop, Docs and Photos folders. It won't let you (de)select subfolders within these and won't let you select any other folders to include. You can move, e.g. your music collection into Docs to sync but that is a pain. I found this a major limitation of OneDrive. I use Google Drive for every day syncing and iDrive for periodic backup.

    • @munjevitijuric5689
      @munjevitijuric5689 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What? I use it regularly and I'm really not sure what you meant? I don't use syncing of those folders, I have dedicated folder for OneDrive, and it absolutely backs up everything I want. Also, you can set files to be available 1) both in cloud and locally, 2)only in cloud and 3) only locally, and you can set it individually for each folder.

      @@munjevitijuric5689 your method of putting everything into a dedicated OneDrive folder won't work for me. Changing the file paths would break my other backup solutions and Lightroom. I want OneDrive to back up the files/folders I choose from their current locations without needing to move them. Google Drive works that way, so why can't OneDrive?
