I’ll never forget seeing Warrant at the Santa Monica Civic in the late 80s. Jani Lane is so charismatic. He had the lights turned on to informalize the arena and kept yelling that it wasn’t a concert but a party amongst friends. He told a story of his youth and then broke into a cover of Judas Priest that he said every teenager probably lost their virginity to, “Living After Midnight”. I was on the floor and the crowd was so full and tight that I could lift my feet and hang in the crowd. And I’m 6’ tall 175 lbs. Those were the days. Rip Jani, you were very talented and one of my all time favorites!
Glad to see the younger generation not only appreciating the music of Gen X but also rockin' out to it. Today's music doesn't compare to the music we grew up with. 🤘🏼
JANI LANE was the lead singer and the writer of their songs. He was Amazingly Talented and Beautiful!! I miss him so much!! My interpretation of "the down boys" is a guy who is "down" for doing whatever the girl he likes wants to do. As long as he's with her he doesn't care what they do or where they go. This is a great song! RIP Jani. They had other great songs like "32 Pennies", "Blind Faith", "Machine Gun", "I Saw Red", "Sometimes She Cries", "Stronger Now", "Bitter Pill".
I’ve been listening to Warrant since their first album dropped. What you said about the flow of the lyrics - and also phrasing and word choices- is the thing that really caught my ear originally. Specifically, in this song “Can we rewind the way we’ve been?” Such a unique way to phrase a do-over, especially back in the day. Anyway, thanks for taking me back to my youth😁
Warrant was very popular, especially their ballads like "Heaven", "Sometimes She Cries", and "I Saw Red". They were as popular for a time there with the likes of Poison, Whitesnake, and Motley Crue. Their popularity longevity wasn't as long but from 1989-1992 they were hot as any other band.
I saw them in August, 1989 in a bar in Killeen, TX on my 21st birthday. 4 months later I saw them open for Motley Crue on the Dr. Feelgood tour. They were great both times. Tons of fun.
Warrant Poison Bon Jovi these were the soundtrack of my childhood.. id say warrant was pretty big in the 80-s not the biggest but they were well known Cherry Pie was their best known and highest selling album and single
It means he wants to be one of the boys she's down with, which back in the day that was a saying that pretty much ment a guy she would like to hook up with and there was also another meaning going down on her.
A "down boy" is a "cool boy" ... someone who is "down" with everyone who it's cool to be down with or worth being accepted by (arguably at a later date, maybe a "hipster" (🤷🤷), or anyone who "is down" with everything that can be seen as cool ...or has the reputation of such or is treated as such. A "down boy" equates to "anyone who is cool" ... 🤦🤦🤦 Simple as that!!
Glad you guys dug this. I was 17 when they hit it big. Warrant made it big with lots of MTV and radio play, but they were not the "A" list of 80's hard rock like Motley Crue, GNR, Def Leppard, Tesla, Queensryche, Bon Jovi, Iron Maiden, to name a few. But there were LOTS of choices--this was a huge genre with 100's of bands. So being on a B list is still honorable. Their rocking songs like this and Big Talk, Cherry Pie etc, are good, but their strong points were their power ballads like Heaven and Sometimes She Cries.
My high school days🥰 Loved this song…still do! Glad you guys did too🤘 Check out Big Talk…another tune 🎶 oh and you guys are definitely Down Boy worthy😊💪
There’s a lot of speculation about what “ Down Boys” means. Some say it’s a sexual reference, others say it’s about poor kids wanting to go to rich side of town. I’m sure someone will know meaning. But I’ll keep looking for better explanation. Why? Cuz you guys just asked!! Keep rocking guys!!
Uhm ...no there isn't. ...rather: perhaps there is, now 🤷🤷🤦 ...or at whatever point SINCE this song appeared (and this expression was used). @@RayfordRaySiegel ...and: what I, actually, was pointing out (why I used them as an example) was that: there ARE people who consider(ed) "hipsters" "cool" as well as: they consider themselves as "cool" ...as "being down." Listen to the words ..lol yes its sexual ..lol take look see shape im in...jani lane at shows would always say they go right here and do the mouth thing for eating pu--y.
Some songs you just enjoy without always understanding the meaning...lol. We take from it what we want. This was Warrant's first video release and was an immediate hit due to their style/looks and catchy pop rock sound. They were not revered by music critics and even other rock bands of the time. Many found them to be contrived and lacking in real rock chops, but clearly that was misguided. The band members could play and Jani Lane (lead vocals) had a great voice. However, videos back then could determine a bands worth. Warrant made some questionable videos that hurt their image - Cherry Pie being the standout. But they also made "Uncle Tom's Cabin", which I felt showed their talent, their ability to write a good story &s song. For the most part, Warrant made fun songs and we need that. They also made a couple of incredible ballads that were well written - "Heaven" "Sometimes She Cries" and "I Saw Red". But many songs that never made it to the charts are some of my favorites - "Love in Stereo", "Mr. Rainmaker", "Your the only Hell Your Momma Ever Raised". Keep listening & reacting.
Unfortunately for Warrant, they came out a little too late for the genre. They had some real bangers and folks here will tell you Janey Lane was a great song writer. They aren't wrong. Machine Gun is a great track from them as well.
I get pissed whenever I mention the band Warrant and somebody says "Oh, that band with the Cherry Pie song". Warrant is so much better than that stupid song, even the band hated it.

I think down boys just means the dudes you wanna hang out with. The popular crowd.

Warrants biggest hit was "HEAVEN". They exploded on the scene from the get go but found their demise in "Cherry Pie"
I just returned to this channel and im loving the reactions to my teen years lol

@@SonicProfessor_a.k.a._T._Andra,
It's all that you mentioned, except hipsters. Hipsters aren't cool.

Saw them at a roller derby chick fight in 88 as a kid then opened for them and toured together. RIP jani
Down boys meant....being part of the big boy crowd in the music business. I want to hang and get signed to a label
