problem is you can't protect anyone unless you train and fight, therefor Gohan is just a oxymoron of a character. His human feelings makes him weak and it's only when he gets humiliated by Buu does Piccolo starts telling him what he needs to hear and not what he wants to hear.
This is particularly why I liked tfs's depiction of Gohan going ssj2. Yes he's stronger, yes he's curb stomping cell, yes he's far superior than Goku in terms of strength right now, but he makes it explicitly clear he hates fighting, he hates the beating of his heart in his ear, and the vibrations he feels every time he makes a strike and that the literal only reason he's going this far now is because he just hates cell more than he hates fighting, which is NOT AT ALL HEALTHY. They also show how unhealthy it is with Gohan's comments while ssj2, he's running with hatred right now and isn't thinking rationally, only wanting to humiliate Cell as much as he can before killing him which bites him in the ass. Dbz's depiction felt more like a coming of age transformation, like he's about to turn over a new leaf towards fighting rather than depicting the fact that despite his potential he himself has no real grand goal or incentive to actually train, it's not him. What good is doing all that if you're not going to enjoy. The only real problem with the original dragon ball manga is that they made these topics implied, and it seems like a majority of this flew over people's heads and didn't realize that forcing Gohan to continue fighting/training would be a complete contrast to who he is.
EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *THAT* IS WHAT I have been saying about Gohan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I am a Gohan fan myself, and although I like Gohan being the strong, cool character that he is at times, I am ok with him staying with his family and if that makes him weaker, then so be it. I'm fine with that because that really feels like it fits with his character. Gohan is just way too human. Gohan was born on earth and raised in human customs and things like that, so he will definitely be more human, and it shows that when he is portrayed as weaker and with his family, because that's what he wants. He wants to be with his family. He wants to be a dad and be there for, and with his daughter as she grows up, he wants things that most other people want. It's like that little instance in the Goku Black Arc where Future Trunks met Adult Gohan and his family and he was sad that he didn't have that, because as cool as they are in fighting and gaining more and more power and just being cool and bad-@$$ you have to remember that they are still people. They have wants and desires and other things, because from their perspective, Gohan and Future Trunks, you always have to fight, you always have to struggle, you lose things and it's hard to just go on, they have losses and life is hard and they wish for their lives to get better. Looking at it that way and in that constantly fighting lifestyle there is barely any peace, if any, and you don't have time for yourself or your family, and you will have a lot of pressure on you and you will be struggling all of the time and so many things where you will feel overwhelmed, and you think about your family, and that things could be better and wishing that it wasn't this way and that things were different, having all this weight on your shoulders and just to a point where you can't be with your family and all of you cannot find really any real happiness if you're not there, and then it just gets to a point where you are overwhelmed and it feels like you want to quit, like you are sick and tired, you're tired of being sick, you are sick of being tired. That is what this would most likely do, maybe not everyone, but it is that way with Future Trunks and with Gohan, because of the pacifist that he is I feel like this is how he will be. That is why I am ok with Gohan being weaker and being with his family and things like that because that portrays his character very well, because that is literally who Gohan is, even in Dragon Ball Z when he was taken by Raditz and Raditz talked about him being born for battle and that he could have been a great fighter, but he said that he didn't want to fight, or when Goku made him fight Cell, Gohan didn't really want to fight either, even though he got more powerful because before he turned Super Saiyan 2 he was literally crying in his battle with Cell because he didn't want what was happening. It actually is alined with Gohan's character and who Gohan is as a person, because I am not going to lie, I was one of those people who, when I saw teen Gohan in the Buu Saga I was like everyone else in thinking, "This isn't my Gohan!" Or "They ruined Gohan!" And things like that, but as I said from looking back on Dragon Ball Z and everything, when he is not angry, through everything from Raditz and Cell and everything Gohan was not about that life he has a soft nature and that is who he is and who he has been during his whole life even in the Buu Saga. It actually alines with Gohan's character and that is why I love him, because it shows that he is different from Goku and Vegeta and he is a more down to Earth, human, individual, who is just living and trying to achieve happiness and other things in life, and that is what makes him a great character in my opinion, not his power, just his personality and characteristics of a good man who shows that even though he has the power he is still a person, not a fighter, well he is a fighter, but what I mean is... he is not a warrior per say. He is not going to go out there and seek battle like Goku or Vegeta, nor is he doing to drop everything just to fight. It gives you that human, peace loving side to Dragon Ball with Gohan. Nah, man. Gohan can't control his Saiyan blood. He DID enjoy fighting vs Cell and vs Dabura. This is why Gohan feels like he never got any character growth and character arc. If it were me writing DBS, I would have made Gohan come to terms with his human dreams and his Saiyan battle lust. And I would also try to make his human side part of his fighting persona. Instead, he somehow still has hidden rage, even though the Old Kai's ritual pulled it all out, and he undeservedly gains Beast mode. And unfortunately, your point about Gohan gravitating towards being a scholar when Goku's influence wears off is false. It's not Goku's influence, it's peace time. No threat to his life, so Gohan does what he enjoys and pours himself into his work. But, I'd argue this is a character regression that further makes Gohan's attainment of Beast less rewarding. In the Cell saga, he vowed he would train and be strong so he can protect those he loved. Why would he break his promise to himself? In the start of the Buu Saga it made sense, since Gohan's ego and shortsightedness made him think he was the bee's knees. But, by the end of the Buu Saga, he should be that much smarter to know he needs to keep training. Yet he regresses and didn't during the peaceful times after Battle of the Gods. And again does so after the ToP. At least this time he practiced 'one' move, but that's still character regression since he once again was taught by Piccolo to not get complacent. Dude either never learns, or has the worst writing in all of fiction. At this point, I'd rather he never learn as his personality.
It's stupid why should Gohan be a scholar to make money when he could of used his fighting talents to make money?This was just a lame way to make Goku stay in the lime light while nerfing Gohan and removing him from the story only to make comedy appearances hear and there.There was no logic at all for Gohan to become a nerd and love it.
His mother wanted gohan to have a normal life and want him to pursue something better than just be a fighter all time. Gohan is also half human. So a lot of the time training wouldn’t be on his mind unless the time he’s needed to fight he’s there. He loves being a scholar he loves to fight as well.

He'd rather make money through his education because that's his passion. Why would he suddenly just change his personality and turn into another Goku? We’ve seen future Trunks get boosts from rage. We’ve never seen Goten & Trunks properly angry and then able to fight.

Chi Chi was 🗑 🗑 🗑. She could’ve saved the scholarly crap for Goten. Goten has been absolutely useless. Gohan’s purpose and potential were squandered. He should’ve been written to be Goku’s successor, but Goku fans were far too short-sighted to see the benefits.
