    Honestly it’s really difficult to read Shakespeare because I can’t picture the characters, and this helps me like the writing a lot more.

    Interesting production, but I'm not convinced by a 45 year old Pennington playing a teenaged Hal.

  • @Kyle-ys3cv
    @Kyle-ys3cv ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hal’s initial soliloquy should be self-righteous, morose/brooding; he is- as far as he imagines, at least- living a double life…he is oppressed by the clowns around him and he’ll one day have his vengeance.

    • @markhaughton9563

      Is it vengeance he's looking for? Or is it a realisation, that he has to keep to himself for the moment, that he'll have to cut his friends loose to take on his royal duties?

    Modern actors are fortunate to have pockets into which they can hide their poor hands. Sixteenth century performers were not so lucky.

    Hotspur’s initial soliloquy should have virtually no traces of jest- he’s indignant.
    These performances are way off- from my reading, at least.

    so much is skipped I am trying to follow the play as to how much is being acted out as it is. These guys do not follow what Mr. William wrote but eat words as to follow their own evil dictates of the heart. or perhaps they are forgetful of the elder age that they have far come through with. I thus am comparing these lines with the original manuscript which I Dorein have found over the metropolis of the internet. so thus be it, let us read and follow the original. To my brethren out there, is there a real uneaten version in pass where from I may learn to act for my audition that I may part take of in great passion and confidence on the 4th o Feb . and make my self admitted in that grandeur of a university named USC. please do converse with me.

    There are no complex themes in this play that need to be expressed in a way that tortures non-English majors. Why do we use Shakespeare to this day when there are so many other fantastic and more relevant authors since his time. In a class where we have 15 weeks to learn so many things about writing and reading, why do we spend such a great deal of time on his writings? Not only do we have to learn the story, characters, themes, and symbolism, but we also have to learn a new dialect. The dialect is nonexistent anywhere else in the world. It seems unfair to the students and thousands of other playwrights who have produced work in the past 500+ years. I understand that some people find this interesting and want to continue to study Shakespeare but it should not be mandatory for students who can only spend limited time on English classes due to other course work.

      Wow! Even for a non-native english speaker like me it is completely obvious that, maybe half of the language you speak today is invented by Shakespeare. I don't know much about languages, but that seems to me a pretty good reason for a native speaker, like you, I suppose I might add, to study Shakespeare.

      Hahahahaha you hardly understand humans then. This is not a superb production but still is a great play. So many windows into humanity.
      It doesn't surprise me that you don't understand though. Look where you are.
      I recommend learning how to read Shakespeare and then reading this play aloud to yourself--after learning to read first of course

    • @andycopeland7051
      @andycopeland7051 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      PS you obviously don't understand the themes of our characters here. This is as applicable to modern life as anything.
      But, ironically, I wouldn't expect a guy who went to college in the twenty-first century to understand.
      You may want to try the No Fear Shakespeare translations but it still may be difficult for you to wrap around with your head. Good place for someone of your caliber to start appreciating a master of the language
