  • Quick to the point information on how to fix the "Shift To Park" message on this 2016 Chevy Malibu. You can replace the whole shifter or bend the tab on a micro switch. This can and will kill your battery if you leave the message.

    Had this problem on my 2016 about 2 years ago. I went to chevrolet telling them what the problem was after finding an online forum of hundreds of people talking about it, but they seemed to be clueless of the issue and long story short I paid over $500 for them to replace the part. Now 2 years later I just got the message again after parking my car and 10 mins later I've found your video which will save me some anger and money :D

      This is just the surface on how automakers nickle and dime there customers.
      You should look under your car if it has a felt belly ban under the engine its there for a reason. Those pans can hold up to 5 quarts of oil in some cases (Ford Primarly) and have your car get out the warranty period so you have to pay to get it fixed

    I described the problem to my local Chevy dealer and they said they didn’t have an EV tech which meant I had to make an appointment with a dealer 4O miles away. Two weeks to get the appointment and it would be in the shop for at least a few days to diagnose and fix.
    5 minutes on TH-cam and 15 minutes in the garage and $0 to fix. I haven’t had the problem again. Incredible, I’m watching your other videos just for fun.

    Great Video. As you probably figured we own a 2016 Malibu with only 23k miles on it. Its been a good vehicle for my wife. This is the 2nd time we are having the shift to park problem. They fixed it under warranty once before. Just happened today again a few years later. Don't know if GM or the Chevy Dealer will honor their work. I may call but after watching your video maybe I should go for the bend it back down method here with the Micro Switch since you pointed it out so well in your video. Well enough that I became a Subscriber. I have done plenty of work on cars over many years. Didn't even know where to start before I saw your video so I just may give it a try this weekend. Still I would like a permanet fix being I keep our cars for a long time. Going to comb the Net to see if anyone makes a replacement Heavy Duty Micro Switch out there for this application. Heck there is surely a market for it.

    Thanks so much for this well done video, NoNonSense. My 2016 Malibu is now working like a charm. I'll mention that my microswitch checked at 5 ohms resistance because of dirty contacts. I spent 30 years servicing electronics and found that an intermittent switch would deteriorate until the contact resistance was a few ohms and then random problems began. But ordering a new switch generally was only a short term fix. A new switch was often at one ohm or more. The solution was to put WD-40 on the switch and actuate it 20 or 30 times till the resistance dropped to 0.1 ohms or less. That's a lifetime fix.
    Loved your video and it's likely saved people tens of thousands of dollars. Two thumbs up!

      Did you just bend that tab ? My 21 just started doing this and of course my warranty ran out a month ago and they won’t cover it. They want $350 out of pocket.

    • @gioo7777
      @gioo7777 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes I bent it as much as I could without applying too much pressure. Haven’t had an issue since

      How easy is it to pull the shifter knob off ? I have to fix mine. I don’t have the money to get it replaced at dealership and can’t deal with the nonsense. My battery has already been drained 2 times due to this dumb problem.

      @@ginoventura7226 I skipped that step. I just pulled the console up and moved it to where I could get under. The only “hard part” is getting the little black plastic cover off

    My wife's 2019 Gm Chevrolet Traverse RedLine is doing the exact same thing, and believe the Dealership will say that this is the problem. Started doing this Late May 2021. It'll be going into the Dealership soon. I read that it is no longer a recall, but it should be covered under warranty. I'll get back to anyone that responds to this, once I know what the problem was & what the Dealership "fix" is. - 17 000 miles/27 500K.

    Great video showing how to remove the center console cover to get to everything. But no longer the correct tsb. Now they have a new harness piece to add that corrects the issue. See TSB #19-NA-206 for the latest replacement parts. There is an additional pigtail harness to add and if needed there is a part number for that switch harness for in the shifter. No need to replace the entire shifter any longer.

      I looked this up it's a good idea also, I may be under warranty for some, I'm curious how this new $9.00 to $15.00 (harness 84733196) solves the problem?

    You make it look easy. I remember doing trim work, back in my day. Hated it. Plastic clips always breaking. Some peoples cars were filthy. That looked like a gravy job. Whats the book time pay on that?

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I don't generally like doing trim work either. This one was certainly well put together and easy to work on though. I think the book time was almost 2 hours if I remember right. Which is crazy

    I have 2016 malibu. I have no light on the PRNDL on the shifter or the dash. Also have the shift to park. Tried doing the pull down on the micro chip and nothing. Also when i shift the car it shakes and i have code that tcm lost connection with car. Maybe changing the shifter piece might fix it??

    Thank you for your "common sense" advice. Just like GM to say you have to replace the whole shifter mechanism.
