The funny thing is that these people aren't even what the law was created to protect. This stuff is wildly outside the idea of necessary shelter and crap. Knowingly and intentionally depriving someone of their residence is not what squatters rights were intended for. It had been applied to folks residing in completely abandoned properties, weren't destroying property, and were keeping decent stewardship (I think) of the buildings, and nobody was actively being deprived of anything. Then again, those kinds of folks typically don't try to fight like these because they got enough problems already. Better to just pack up and move along than get locked up.
Eh. It's a chicken and egg kind of thing. Regardless, not defending these people.

Dislike "coddling" and just as sick of watching useless people take advantage of the kindness of others but it isn't necessary for law enforcement to resort to foul and abusive language to gain compliance. Police officers are held to a higher standard of conduct for a reason. People do have medical conditions, the cops need to be receptive to that possibility. They also need to control their temper and be professional. She has a right to speak. Otherwise you get the NUMEROUS cases of abuze, including them cuffing a woman in the back of their patrol despite telling them multiple times doing so could end her, and she was gone halfway to the station. Or cops mag dumped a deaf person because he refused to follow their voice commands. Squatters are bad persons, but things need to be done right or abuses of power WILL happen to those who are not.

    • @ericaschaidt8588
      @ericaschaidt8588 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +41

It is beyond frustrating that these squatters hide behind the rights and protections that are intended to protect legitimate renters.
A while ago my mom and step dad divorced. After she moved he eventually lost their old house and would have been homeless. She allowed him to move in with her and my half sister (his daughter). He was there with the understanding he’d look for a job and get on his feet and leave. He didn’t pay rent or contribute financially at all during this time. After some time we found out he was lying about looking for work and applying for jobs so she kicked him out.
Since he was homeless at that point she was nice enough to allow him to store some stuff there, items he wouldn’t be able to keep with him while on the streets.
My sister called me one day and said that as she left for school she saw her at the house and we’d suspected that he had been breaking in to do laundry, shower and whatever else while my mom was at work and my sister was at school. So I went over there and caught him in the act and called the cops.
Because my mom had at one point allowed him to stay there and was kind enough to let him store stuff there so it wouldn’t get stolen on the streets the cops couldn’t do anything and said that my mom had to formally evict him.
So despite him never being an official tenant, and the fact that he obviously knew he wasn’t allowed there since he was always sneaking in when no one was there nothing could be done without a formal eviction. They even said we couldn’t toss his stuff out of the house because if we did he could then press charges for destruction of property or something to that effect.
      No good deed goes unpunished.

You missed the fact that they WERE NOT SQUATTERS. THE GIRL CLEARLY STATED THAT THEY WERE LIVING THERE WITH HER!! They LEGALLY have RESIDENCY. Meaning she has to file an eviction.
Thanks to her. These officers are at risk for getting a bad mark on their records and even being sued for an illegal eviction.
Just because you tell someone to leave. Doesn't make them a squatter. In ALL states if you are in a place for 2 weeks and clearly have been living there then you HAVE TO FILE AN EVICTION.
What is worse. Is that she is using a restraining order to by pass that which is actually illegal.
Did you not notice how all the officers were clearly shocked that she admitted she had been letting the guy live there?
That means THEY KNOW THEY MESSED UP! Not to mention as a result the woman they arrested WAS AN INVITED GUEST OF THE GUY AND NOT A BURGLAR!!
Pay better attention. The girl and her father just played the victim card and now the officers are hoping that the woman and guy they arrested are not smart enough to file lawsuits and illegal eviction charges!

Was having issues with my tenants not paying on time and multiple calls to the police .I was done with being a landlord It was a bad experience for me . I didn't renew their lease and gave them notice Since I was putting it up for sale ..Neighbors saw them moving out in the night hours as they stiffed me for the rent owed .The next morning My Realstate agent went over to change the locks and found many people in my home moving their stuff in .They said They got permission from the tenants to live there .I called the cops and they had to remove all Items in 24 hrs .The next day They found my door kicked in They stripped my entire house even all the locks fans ruined my new carpets and flooring .Punched a few holes and some windows were broken :( .I had to replace all to sell .The tenants left no Trace where they went Made a Police report .Squatters can bring Havoc on our lives . What’s up with that homeowner? She doesn’t have any keys to the house, she’s getting a restraining order against the guy who supposedly said they could live there but it takes her forever to tell the cops about it, she seems entirely unfamiliar with the circumstances concerning their claims. She seems very confused.
All she has to do is say they’re not authorized to stay there and the person who apparently said they could wasn’t authorized to give them permission. She’s very discombobulated. Fortunately for her, the cops weren’t and they were able to figure it out. But she’s a mess.

They most likely can. BUT, in many cases the utilities are already connected or they have a fake lease / rental agreement to show the utility to get them connected or they just don't bother since they know they wont be there long and its easier to leach power from a neighbor with a long enough extension cord.
Also many places have laws so utilities can not shut off power if the bill is paid and again they have a lease agreement, even if its fake in many cases and the utility is in a darned if ya do darned if you don't where someone is going to sue them if they are wrong.
Lastly, while these guys are clearly thieves in some cases the "squatters" are victims of a 3rd party who is renting them the house or sold them the house because the owner abandoned it for months. Why should someone who did everything legally be thrown in jail like an animal because a 3rd party scammed them and the actual homeowner?

I live in NYC and even though I'm in a safe, wealthy neighborhood, there's a home being squatted by junkies on the next block. They throw loud parties and there was a shooting a few months ago related to their guests. They were also renting it to their friends. It was a house that the bank took over from the owner, so it didn't technically have a resident. The neighborhood got so fed up with the squatters' antics that politicians got involved and they were removed.
I'm sure every neighborhood has stories like that, especially in big cities that have ridiculously strong renter rights. It's a nightmare to get a partner out of your apartment if they've stayed there x amount of days - even if you broke up with them and they pay no rent. A lot of landlords here are small - one or two properties - and they get shafted by the court system, especially when the rent freezes happened during COVID lockdown. This is the problem with democracy - the renters outnumber the landlords so the city will almost always side with the renters, regardless of how much of a problem they are or if they pay any rent. Landlords also have to shoulder big court costs. I don't care aboutt he big companies that rent, but a lot of smaller landlords have to put up with so much nonsense.

So there was a house on my street and I was familiar with the owner. I didn't see them for a while and when I saw their relative I asked about them. They were in a recovery unit for a recent surgery. The recovery was taking longer then expected and a bunch of squatters moved in. They could have lived there rent free as all the bills ( electric, cable, water) were being auto paid. But true to squatter nature they completely destroyed the house...literally they had to bulldoze the house. My neighbor had to move in with relatives as she no longer had a home to live in , thanks to the squatters. 😢

Police can remove people if there’s enough for them to argue that they’re simply trespassing and not attempting to squat. Though, this case feels weird, because it definitely sounds like these people were edging into “burgeoning squatter” territory and that the owner just didn’t want to bother with eviction, rather than they were just trespassing.
