I mean, if they're trying to make it realistic, a basic yet modernly functional car lock pick would be worth quite a lot, especially with the efficiency that it works with in the episode. The rifle was a 5.56 m4, you know, good old 'murica. This is a very deadly weapon that I assure you neither of them came remotely close to obtaining a legal license/permit for. In all, you're right. Regular survival that's a scam but in the storyline it actually makes sense
