Today we talk about everything you need to know about Windows 8.1 end of life on Jan 10, 2023. This is the Extended End Date, so there will be no more security updates for windows 8.1.
Now is the time to start plaining you next operating system. Its very unlikely that your computer is compatible with Windows 11, but you can still use Windows 10 until Oct. 14, 2025 and Microsoft could still extend the life cycle for Windows 10 to even longer.

This video was great and easy to follow. I wasn't going to back my stuff up because it seemed to be a seamless transition but I couldn't afford to lose my programs and files. Not sure I backed anything up properly BUT I was able to follow this with 0 issues. When I rebooted, I did disconnect my internet because of some comments saying it wouldn't complete for them. I just wanted to add a positive comment here to help spread the video. I was struggling to use new hardware and software with windows 8. I'm so happy it was this easy and litteraly seamless. I rebooted my pc like normal and everything is exactly how I left it...just windows 10 now.

So when the installed goes on to "look for latest updated" before it installs the windows. Just disconnect your internet, it will skip looking for updates and install windows for you without a hitch.

I expected a valid windows 8 license would be accepted for Windows 10 since a Windows 7 license is accepted. I recently used a Windows 7 starter license (old Acer) for an old Acer Vista laptop that was accepted for a Windows 10 installation. And with SSD, not so bad. I understand some windows 8 licenses are embedded in the BIOS so no authentication sticker is available.

Windows lets you upgrade to Windows 10 using the Activation Key that came with your current Windows version. I had Windows 7 Home on one of my Dell computers. I popped in the Windows 10 ISO file on a USB thumb drive and booted to that. It let me upgrade Windows 7 Home to Windows 10 Home using my original Windows 7 Home Activation Key.

Am surprised that there are still people using 8.1 and in any case even if the machine is upgradable the hardware that it has means that they will still be stuck with having to get a Windows 11 machine eventually.
Just a little off-topic my main laptop running Windows 10 is activated with the generic key that after a problem with the machine some time ago a Microsoft tech put in it for me so in your opinion will an upgrade to Windows 11 (machine is hardware capable) still possible?

Hey Brian, just so you know I THINK the only platform that officially supports Windows 7 all the way up to Windows 11 is Skylake-X, but I'm fairly certain there's no upgrade path between Windows 8.1 and Windows 11 like there is 8.1 -> 10, so really going to 10 is your best bet unless you want to do 8.1 -> 10 then 10 -> 11, which is probably more hassle than it's worth (providing you're very fortunate to have a W11 capable Win8.1 machine).
Also I think the reason the free upgrading is still in place is because Microsoft have never really retained activation info as well as they probably should've. Like you'd be surprised how many times I have managed to reuse OEM keys on completely different hardware (providing they've been dormant for a long time) and activated online just fine (especially Microsoft Office back in the day OEM keys existed for that, but Windows has worked too). Perhaps Microsoft just doesn't like retaining activation info long term because it's just too expensive to do so, which would equally apply to not wanting to retain info on valid Win7/8 keys for Windows 10 if that was the case. But I'm not sure.
Either way, is there really many people still using Windows 8.1 today?

I have Windows 11 on my lap top and 365. I have an old laptop with windows 8 on it that will not support windows 11, but I want to upgrade it to windows 10. I'm trying to upgrade it to 10 and it is prompting me for a key and the windows 11 key does not work. Is there anything else I can do?

I have the discs for Win 8 and 8.1, and might give installing it onto a spare SSD, and see what happens...:)
I also bought 2-3 keys (for about 18 quid) many years ago for them and Win 10...
I also have two SSD's with a Win 7 upgrades, and one SSD with an actual Win 10 on it.
If it all goes wrong I still have 2 workable Win 10's to use....:)
I keep these 'spare' SSD's to use, because doing a Win 10 fresh installation, is a pain in the bewtocks, as it takes a few days installing software, checking it works, games, and other stuff to knock it into shape....
