When I was younger I found shanaynay crazy and funny however i lived in a community filled with black and latino people. Because I was exposed to black and latino people daily, I never looked at shanaynay as a representation of us. I only saw her as a funny wild character like the other characters shane depicted. However, since I have grown up I learned how damaging this character really was because of all the young viewers who did not live in black communities. It was especially damaging during that time, because there was so little positive representation of black people. When you see a crazy white character, as someone who doesnt live around white people, it doesnt really skew your perspective of white people because of the loads of positive white representation in the media.
I grew up in an extremely white area and unfortunately this was the impression a LOT of these white kids had about other races. Obviously Shane Dawson isn’t 100% solely responsible for this, but he was hugely popular with the people I knew then.
totally agree it gives people an impression of black people that they have a variety of bad qualities. shanaynay has every bad quality and stereotype in the book so kids seeing that think “oh is this how black people act?” and that’s where the joke stops and becomes very real because this becomes their subconscious justification for being racism later on in life

That sounds awful 😭💞 Don't let these a-holes get into your head, you are beautiful and probably very smart. I don't think I even knew what racist was when I was 8.
This is why representation matters. He had a character that mocked Latinos called Guadalupe who was his Puerto Rican maid. He made her basically a copy of Shanaynay, but much more overtly dumb and sexual. Being a 12 year-old Puerto Rican girl at the time, I was surprised to even have been mentioned in a video, but again as the butt of the joke. My name is also Shania. In middle school, when Shane was really popular, I was mocked for having such a similar name to Shanaynay. He wasn’t aware of it, but by normalizing these racist assumptions, he is damaging the opportunity for dialogue about race/culture and making minorities even more invisible.
As someone who knows that Shane is secretly obsessed with what people say about him, I just want you to know that he likely is listening. I tweeted Shane about 6 years ago about a video concept he did being unoriginal and he went off and sent his fans to attack me lol. Shane says “I don’t pay attention to what people say about me” but he honestly does and he relies on the people around him to tell him what people are saying. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that he states how proud he is of those songs, after you made a video criticizing it. I’m 90% sure that he’s seen all your videos, he’s obsessed with what people think of him
kind of reminds me of gabbie hanna saying she doesn’t watch videos about her when it’s so obvious that she does. no wonder they used to be good friends lol
@@krissybee123 it's also sad because I used to be really big fans of both Shane and Gabbie; I didn't start watching their content until about 2015, so after Shanaynay kind of blew over and after Gabbie was on Vine, and I fell in love with Shane's eccentricity and Gabbie's storytelling. So, it's honestly been kind of difficult to learn about the things that both people did before I started to fall in love with their content. I of course don't know either one personally, but it feels like learning about one of my friends' bad past, especially considering the mental breakdowns of both content creators this year
The more I find out about Shane the more I realise who similar he is to onision. Like damn, no wonder onision had a massive obsession with him they're practically two peas in a pod. I'm really sorry you were attacked by his fans 😔
I remember this. I also remember a behind the scenes featurette where he shows the "skit" to his mom, who laughs uproariously. He said that he always showed his videos to his mom to make sure she laughed, then he felt good about posting them. So yeah, his mom totally enabled this crap.
I got some serious hate in junior high for saying I disliked Shane Dawson lmao. I had, and still have, a dumb and often crude sense of humor, but this was NEVER funny.
I hate that third eyebrow. If a third eye helps you reach a higher consciousness, then shanes third eyebrow helps him reach an even more racist state of being.
I’m sure that’s why he has been able to survive this long after so many “cancellations”. This super racist state gave him protection like an antibiotic-resistance bacteria.
kind of unrelated: being a black girl it’s always hard to see that shanaynay was a real character that people laughed at. my brain can’t process it’s real. and that a black woman joined him to make this type of stuff. like genuinely i’m upset that people would laugh at someone talking with AAVE. i feel made fun of even if he isn’t wearing black face honestly. it was never funny.
I agree, it’s also blackface without the blackface. If we think about minstrel shows it was also about the “black voice.” He also over painted his lips, so just because he was not painted brown or black so that he can actually sell the character, I still personally think it’s blackface in practice.
i'm so sorry. i'm a white european girl and i used to watch these videos when i was 12-13 and for awhile i thought this was funny. i didn't speak english very well and i thought black people in America were similar to Shanaynay. thankfully it didn't take me too long to realize it was offensive and innacurate but it sucks that he normalized making fun of stereotypes for so many kids to watch...
i’d like to add the name shanaynay also makes fun of african american names- and making shanaynays sister a black woman... he was clearly making a joke out of us.

It's genuinely HARD looking back at this shit because I remember I did laugh. And I was a young Black girl. A VERY young Black girl. And looking back, this helped fuel my self hatred. I never wanted to be that Black girl. I always felt I had to codeswitch and I even stopped speaking my 2nd language. It’s wonderful that you’ve been able to unlearn those things, I hope you speak your second language again. Being bilingual is fantastic, I’m sorry you were made to feel like you had to abandon that part of yourself. I was young when I watched Shane as well, I’m a white girl from Scotland so my experience is vastly different from your own, but I think it’s just disgusting how many young children were harmed by watching his videos. He’s a terrible human being and he doesn’t care at all about the people he’s harmed with his content.
I had completely forgotten that this was a Shane Dawson film during the beginning scene with the sisters in the van. I was getting invested in their cute relationship, the dialogue was decent... Man the next scene was a whiplash and a half.
Right? The bit where she’s like “oh I had another sister but I tickled her to death” is so something I would say to my own baby sister and then it just.... went there
Same i actually thought that for a youtube video short film the sister relationship was p well done. It was cute imo and the necklace thing was cheesy but it was still wholesome.... and then the epitome of a hatecrime comes in
I was really young (11-13) when I watched Shane’s early content. I had no idea how bad it was until I was an adult. I’m ashamed that I ever laughed at his videos, but at the same time, it makes me angry because I know there’s tons of kids like me who just didn’t understand how offensive and harmful this content is. Yeah me too..I was very clueless..I don't know much about everything but I do want a be a better person essentially with the stuff I watch as well and a lot of others things too..😅😌🌸
You should do a video on Shane's Blank Space parody. He did a party of the music video where he was a stalker and killed Taylor and it was so bad and disturbing she went to TH-cam and made them remove his video.

@@PalitoSelvatico Shane, his brother, and his mom used to work at a Jenny Craig store. One of the things they had to do was sell (I think lmao) copies of Valerie Bertinelli's, who was the spokesperson at the time, biography to the Jenny Craig clients. The book had a lot of raunchy content, about sex and drugs and things like that. So Shane had his coworkers and some of the clients read the raunchiest passages out loud in the store. Valerie and Jenny Craig as a whole didn't like this, so they fired all the employees who were involved in the video, including Shane, his mom, and his brother.

@Stop my ego. i dont think OP was trying to negate the racism, and I actuslly do remember the video they are talking about. In that video the "emo" kids literally slash their wrists with butcher knives and it really was a mess.
@Dynasty The Gemini yes racism is a horrible thing and a huge issue, nobody is negating that, but OP is entitled to having felt hurt about other stuff in Shane's videos too. Racism is horrible, but it isnt the sole bad thing Shane's done, and making fun of people who self harm is obviously horrible too.
@Stop my ego. no one said it was the same as racism. Also self harm is not something people can “adjust”, it’s literally a mental disorder. Shane triggering mentally ill people isn’t okay because he also did racism.
The movie should have ended with the big sister being arrested for having all these stolen goods in her house, harboring an escaped convict, and murder.
As a 21 year old black woman, I have to remind myself that I was in like 6th grade watching some of this Shane content and laughing. I also thought wearing nerd glasses was edgy, only starting to believe that boys didn’t have cooties, and was still crying over the end of high school musical, so I give myself a pass. Your videos make me so nostalgic and also glad to be older 😂 I love it here 💕
I don’t think we have the conversation about how Martin Lawrence created this caricature of a black woman and we didn’t see it as inherently racist or wrong but it plays into mysogynoir and perpetuates these stereotypes many are actively trying to fight and how Shane Dawson used this and made it just as racist as it already was
@@celtytompkins5294 uhm okay so my reply disappeared misogynoir is basically misogyny specifically aimed at black women where race and gender play apart in the bias towards them so characters like Shanaynay who was created and played by a black man perpetuating negative stereotypes about black women is just as racist as what Shane did but lots of time people ignore that because he’s also black and black men have been doing it for so long we also have things like Madea , and Big Momma , all embody stereotypes of black women both whom came from the mind of black men
@@keepyourshoesathedoor I used to laugh as a kid sometimes I’ll watch the occasional Madea movie and chuckle at the drama and things like that but when it comes to the blatant racism let’s call a spade a spade colorism and featurism is racism perpetuated by black people it is hard to stomach and ugh I hate Martin the disrespect towards Pam he could’ve uplifted his girlfriends best friend and actually helped the community but NO ! The fact that I recognize that they used Shane’s mom’s house for the Christmas morning happy scene...I watched way too much of this shit growing up lmao🤦🏾♀️
As a kid growing up as foreign and living in America, this is what everyone was watching. I always thought this was just normal because everyone was into it. Even back in the day I realized some of it was too much but I felt like I had to fit in. Also, he used to make a lot of sexual assault jokes back in the day and those would actually make me cry because I was assaulted at a very young age. His videos never made me feel good.
I'm sure a lot of people have said this before, but...Honestly, I feel like the only reason Shane blew up like he did was because a lot of us were young kids watching him, and weren't really taught about racism, racist caricatures, and other themes of that nature. So, kids missed the racism and just saw it as "haha random weird humor!!" On top of us, because of it being normalized, I'm sure a lot of the fanbase stuck with him into their teens without realizing, or excusing his racist "humor." But now being an adult, learning about these things, and looking back on what we grew up on-- Just. Yikes. Other adults excusing him still, really have no reason or excuse to support him, unless if they share those ideals. Being a "product of the time" isn't an excuse. Racism is racism. It's always bad no matter the time.
I think you hit the nail on the head. I grew up in a very culturally diverse area, but I enjoyed Shane's content quite a bit. however I never really internalized what I now look back and see as racist comedy. I just that it was random silly comedy geared towards kids my age. but I feel like I'm one of the lucky ones here, and I'm a big believer in redemption and growing as a person, but Shane should stay deplatformed. yes this was a product of the times (pre Trump as I like to think of it) where "edgy" humor like this was fully endorsed. but it was racist, is racist, and will always be racist. I think you're right on
@@feitme I would say you were lucky, and I also agree. Honestly, in my experience I never watched Shane's videos as a kid and am very grateful for it. I grew up with a father trying to brainwash me into believing all white people were against blacks enough as it is, but by then I had a decent idea of what racism/sexism was and realized he was fucked up regardless. I say this because parents can also be too preoccupied with their own issues to notice anything. I feel a lot of problems like these were just never brought up out of fear of change, not trying to speak for anyone, but as Trash Lord stated it was normalized. Look how many people get pissed when someone actually calls out a public figure on their bullshit now days (I'm not referring to the ones who do it for clout). As long as the kid is kept busy I doubt they ever questioned it. I do partly blame TH-cam for pushing his content due to popularity, at the end of the day it's like any other a company which is not surprising, I blame the parents even more for not being bothered to educate them on why content like this POS is wrong. But then what's the point, they still don't.
The fact that people say that about anything made post-2000 is disgusting. Like it doesn’t make sense for most eras that people use it for, but... the last 20 years? Really? It’s especially disingenuous.
Also, IT WAS 2011. Blackface was never ok, but it wasn't even socially accepted in 2011. It was nine years ago. The world has not flipped on its head in nine years. He's just an asshole.
exactly, sure people being in black face and seen as comedic WAS a different time, no denying that, but it doesn't make it ANY less racist just because we view it differently now. it doesn't excuse Shane as a grown ass man making content internationally.
He didn’t even really apologize in his video, he kept saying that everyone in his family thought it was funny for him to sexually harass his teenage cousin. At this rate he could probably just be transparent and say he doesn’t regret his jokes and he’d still keep a large part of his audience
@@wakeupandsmelltherain6351 Someone else commented this on a different video, but they said that Shane is probably right when he says that his family is just like that. It doesn't mean that it is right what he did, but it gives us insight into what kind of family he grew up in. Which is not an excuse for him doing blackface, kissing a minor, harassing his pets or whatever else he did, but it is telling when he says his family is like that. His cousin probably grew up believing that it was fine for Shane to have that talk with her and every other member in the family who participated in this bullshit, like his mother, is basically the same as what he is.
@@janek7479 he’s also brought up that his family wasn’t made up of great people, so I think he shouldn’t have even brought up their thoughts on it tbh. Like “I know it’s bad but these other people I think are shitty thought it was okay”, it just comes off as an complicated justification to me.
@@wakeupandsmelltherain6351 Yes, I completely agree! Why even say that as a way to justify your actions? I just find it interesting that he felt the need to say that, you know? Definitely not making any excuses because he shouldn't have had that talk with his cousin. Actually, he shouldn't have done any of the things he is being canceled for. It's just disgusting.
I was 10 when I would watch Shane and I had thought that Shanaynay was supposed to be a caricature of the white girls who pretend to be black only by reinforcing stereotypes. My 10 year old brain rationalized it as satire and its wild looking back and realizing it was nowhere near that. It was just blunt, unoriginal racism
Wow imagine I got to grow up watching you in middle school instead of Shane Dawson. I am so pissed somehow I blocked this racist garbage out and then picked up watching him again during his food/conspiracy theory phase. I’m so mad lol
I feel your pain, that's what happened with me as well. I didn't know about any of this stuff cause I didn't care enough to know the background of every person I watched on youtube y'know? What made me stop watching was when my friend made fun of him for his "i didn't touch my cat" apology he did on twitter. I had literally no idea what she was on about but I had to tell her to stop saying the joke cause it made me wanna throw up. I don't care if that was true or not. No sane human being apologizes by saying shit like "I didn't cum on my cat!", that just isnt how he should have approached that situation. It's gross. sry for the rant, i forgot about how much that made me mad lol.
Seeing Shane’s brand of jokes makes me think so much about your jokes and how they never degrade people for certain reasons…. Body types, income level, race, etc. You’re a hilarious person without stooping to that level.
"And Melissa? Was that her name? I dunno. Who cares- _Natalie._ " me @ random cousins* *i'm west African so every other person I meet thru family is a "cousin" lol
Using “Whitney” was actually very relevant for the time. The show was originally going to be canceled after the first season, but it became so notorious for “hate-watching” that they decided that gained enough attention to try a second season. It was eventually canceled permanently, but it did help propel “2 Broke Girls” and, for some reason, “Undateable.” It surprisingly garnered a cult following. It’s definitely a pop culture reference worthy of that time. Maybe you don’t think it’s funny now, but it was a popular punchline back then.
As someone who watched Shane when I was starting college and should have known better, I will say that at first I ignored him like the plague. I didn't understand how his videos kept being recommended by youtube and why they were so popular. But over time I caved and kept getting curious. I watched more and more videos. I didn't like a number of his characters but I was entertained. He framed it as if he was some normal guy, taking a peak into the lives of these crazy characters. He kept himself detached from them in a way and even had a second channel to kinda hammer home that idea that he wasn't his characters. At that time, if something was offensive myself and it appears millions of others ignored it and kinda stayed detached about it as long as we knew it was a character. That's just how the times were unfortunately. However, I quickly started to dislike him as it became more and more apparent just how racist and creepy he was and of course as I was growing and coming into my own as a Black woman. I no longer felt comfortable with every youtuber slapping on a trashy wig and pretending to be a Black woman. That seemed to be the way to youtube stardom at the time, and yes as others have said, we could thank Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence, and Tyler Perry for catapulting that idea to millions of households and making that an acceptable concept. No one thought it was wrong and I was being attacked when I began calling it out. This was when Chescaleigh was growing in popularity and started reversing it on people with her series of videos which often showed people what their microagressions looked like. It was hard to escape him though. He was there in the golden age of youtube, which I blame us millenials for, we were consuming it like crazy from 2007-2011 and made this stuff what this site would be known for. I'm glad culture has shifted, no matter how many people say they hate cancel culture, it makes life better for marginalized groups who need it for our mental health.

shane's whole brand at the peak of his career, when he was making MILLIONS, was like "LOL IM POOR IT'S RELATABLE!" which was such bullshit bc... saying "im poor" doesn't make you not a fuckin millionaire. i think this movie shows even more of his ignorance on class, and how it's tied to his racism. he is able to be sympathetic to white poor charcters, like brie essrig and her sister, but black poor characters (the "jamaican girl") and characters who are maybe not explicitly black but are certainly coded black (shanaynay) are treated as "trashy" and like they're terrible people and everything about them is a punchline. we all KNOW he's a racist pos, but jesus christ, he never fails to horrify.

Every time I watched him and a racist ”joke” came up made me feel so uncomfortable, attacked, and hated. The comment section was almost as disgusting as the videos: they called anyone who called him out ”snowflakes, and ”babies.” I remember when Shane apologized for black face, and everyone forgave him; The funny thing is that they were probably all white children who didn't even know why the black face was wrong! I understand what Shane was trying to do; he wanted *shock* humor (not dark humor). This is when he does or says something that makes the audience go,” OMG, I can't believe he said that, lol!” But the thing is, is that shock and dark humor aren't supposed to make kids hate themselves because of the color of their skin. I was embarrassed while watching him. And because another black person supported him, It drove the point even further. What he achieved was NOT shock humor. It was just plain old racism.
I loved these videos as an 11-13 year old , couldn’t tell you why, but I think shock factor was a huuuggge part of comedy ten years ago and especially at that age . I feel as though satire comedy is shifted a lot in the past 10 years

I'm really sorry. You didn't deserve to be treated like you were. I hope you've come around to love yourself more since then

I’m 90% sure that he’s seen all your videos, he’s obsessed with what people think of him
My thoughts exactly. So sorry you were attacked by his stans.

I of course don't know either one personally, but it feels like learning about one of my friends' bad past, especially considering the mental breakdowns of both content creators this year

kind of unrelated: being a black girl it’s always hard to see that shanaynay was a real character that people laughed at. my brain can’t process it’s real. and that a black woman joined him to make this type of stuff. like genuinely i’m upset that people would laugh at someone talking with AAVE. i feel made fun of even if he isn’t wearing black face honestly. it was never funny.

Mysogynoir?

The fact that I recognize that they used Shane’s mom’s house for the Christmas morning happy scene...I watched way too much of this shit growing up lmao🤦🏾♀️
As a kid growing up as foreign and living in America, this is what everyone was watching. I always thought this was just normal because everyone was into it. Even back in the day I realized some of it was too much but I felt like I had to fit in. Also, he used to make a lot of sexual assault jokes back in the day and those would actually make me cry because I was assaulted at a very young age. His videos never made me feel good.
I'm so sorry you were assaulted and then re-traumatized. Are you doing better now?
@@shemmy8467 i am, thank you for asking. You're very kind ❤
I'm sure a lot of people have said this before, but...Honestly, I feel like the only reason Shane blew up like he did was because a lot of us were young kids watching him, and weren't really taught about racism, racist caricatures, and other themes of that nature. So, kids missed the racism and just saw it as "haha random weird humor!!"
On top of us, because of it being normalized, I'm sure a lot of the fanbase stuck with him into their teens without realizing, or excusing his racist "humor."
But now being an adult, learning about these things, and looking back on what we grew up on-- Just.

18:38 "you have a lot of nerve calling this movie "written and directed"" I DIED
I never thought I would see something more unfunny than modern Family Guy.

i loved shane as a child, i started watching him at 8 in 2008. He always included thumbnails and references to disney shows and stars. A bit messed up to lure children in that way...
The fact that Shane didn’t care enough to glue down and cover up his REAL eyebrow just shows how little he actually cared about any of these characters when he first created them.
Nick is, as always - A KING 👑 - thank you for your blessings
"delivering pizzas is a real job. Sorry it somehow doesn't pay as much as posting blackface content for years on the internet Shane" made me Gasp.
Also you are serving those glasses during the lawsuit bit hell yeah
I’d like to write my name down for that class action lawsuit, thanks nick.
shane's whole brand at the peak of his career, when he was making MILLIONS, was like "LOL IM POOR IT'S RELATABLE!" which was such bullshit bc... saying "im poor" doesn't make you not a fuckin millionaire. i think this movie shows even more of his ignorance on class, and how it's tied to his racism. he is able to be sympathetic to white poor charcters, like brie essrig and her sister, but black poor characters (the "jamaican girl") and characters who are maybe not explicitly black but are certainly coded black (shanaynay) are treated as "trashy" and like they're terrible people and everything about them is a punchline. we all KNOW he's a racist pos, but jesus christ, he never fails to horrify.
lmao in his more recent videos he'll deadass without a drop of irony be like "i'm not even as rich as people think i am -_-" wearing a full balenciaga sweatsuit and driving a golf cart around
I just wanna say iv never been happier about accidentally finding a channel. Your soooooo funny, and just ...I don't even know just the best thing is when I get to watch your videos. Keep doing what you love your amazing
I'm a 17-year-old black girl, and I watched Shane when I was much younger. I never found him funny. Every time I watched him and a racist ”joke” came up made me feel so uncomfortable, attacked, and hated. The comment section was almost as disgusting as the videos: they called anyone who called him out ”snowflakes, and ”babies.”
I remember when Shane apologized for black face, and everyone forgave him; The funny thing is that they were probably all white children who didn't even know why the black face was wrong!
I understand what Shane was trying to do; he wanted *shock* humor (not dark humor). This is when he does or says something that makes the audience go,” OMG, I can't believe he said that, lol!”
But the thing is, is that shock and dark humor aren't supposed to make kids hate themselves because of the color of their skin.
I feel as though satire comedy is shifted a lot in the past 10 years
almost forgot to watch this today
oh nisa, how funny seeing you here! 💕
Nisa is a Nick DiRamio stan confirmed
if you wanna know who was laughing: it was me and my shitty “edgy” emo friends. we were all in middle school and obsessed with “eDgY” humor and thought it was all funny and anti pc and pissed of our parents blah blah blah.
now i find it all disgusting and i’m glad shane is being somewhat held responsible for the awful things he’s said and done.
"Never work with kids or animals" ....words Shane should live by lmao
"almost crying face" more like "stomachvirus face"
"This is so wholesome...why do I feel like something racist is about to happen?!" Sent me lmfao you called it 😂
I say Nick should have the sub count that Shane has/had. He actually deserves it!
That’s so kind, thank you for that!!

I said it I the real video and I’ll say it again: I was so lucky that I didn’t know English when I was younger bc I never saw this videos... but I had to ruin my adulthood somehow
“I already need an antacid” LOL I spit out my drink
I love how Nick suggests alternative story lines, and uses clips from the film to recreate that. It really supports the vision so viewers know exactly what he means!
Nick you have to review “A Recipe for Seduction” where Mario Lopez plays Colonel Sanders 😂 I can’t believe it’s going to be an actual movie, I didn’t think it was real until I saw the trailer 😂
"Christmas festive holiday breakdown" sounds like me every December
