joshentertainment 2 1. It is rude to paint yourself in black face because back in the day, they (white people) used to paint their faces black and make fun of black people for entertainment. 2. They (white people) used the n word in a demeaning so we (black people) made the word ours
joshentertainment 2 Every country has a history. A lot has happend on earth. In America, there is a history of slavery and horrible things happenig to people, because of the color of their skin. Unfortunately today there are still people treating black people absolutely horrible in America. If you would like to read about it, try things like ‘black history america’ in google or something similar. It is complicated if this is the first time you learn about it. But I hope you understand many people have suffered and died and this is a very serious topic.
Todd from Bojack Horseman said it best: “You can't keep doing this! You can't keep doing shitty things and then feel bad about yourself like that makes it okay! You need to be better!”
Honestly, the age difference isn't that bad but they need to be adults and aware of their actions. Kids/minors shouldn't be exposed to sexual content outside sex ed.
@@ulrikahaggard9923 How the hell am I a walking contradiction when I just support age difference between couples as long as they met and had been with each other after being adults. I am sorry for my English, but all I am saying is that consenting adults should be in a relationship even if there is an age difference? I just said that because people get a lot of hate for having age difference, even if they do love each other and had their relationship when they were both adults. If you really want to know, my parents have an 8-year gap between them and they met when my mother was 20 and dad was 28, hence they were consenting adults. They were not exposed to sexual content before 18, so how is it a contradiction? I am not trying to be defensive, but can you explain it to me?
He could have gone somewhere legitimate with that conversation. He could have said, "Pedophilia is a disease, nobody chooses to be sexually attracted to children, it's exploitative and terrible but you gotta feel sad for people who live with that shit in their head.... but that doesn't mean it can be condoned, sanctioned, or allowed..." (yada yada etc) I mean, it's not his fun-loving style but... It still would have shocked and upset people (because you aren't supposed to pity people who have taboo mental disorders!) But at least then when people took it out of context he'd actually have been the victim of ignorance rather than the purveyor and therefore have a defensible position. I don't think him saying all this "eww pedophilia is soooo totally gross, disgusting, icky icky yuck yuck you guyzzz" (yes I paraphrased but same drift) bullshit makes me feel any less uncomfortable with his actual stance towards the topic (which ostensibly is that it's not so bad as long as they're at least 12, buy your merch, and/or are family!) It's a serious fucking topic and what disturbs me is how off his defense feels. Thou doth protest too much, Shane. I'd have respected his apology more if he had said "Sorry, I was just trying to say the most shocking, taboo shit I could think of and that's what came out, oops!" It would have still been trite but would have felt like the truth. If this is what he considers acceptable to let the world see, what does he keep hidden?
@@LunarEleven yeah it would've been better if he talked about the mental condition but he didn't, the context is exactly what it sounds like and it's fucked up.
Shane Dawson was grooming children to accept racism and getting sexualized as normal and funny. I don't care about his intentions or his past, I care about his impact. And his impact makes him guilty. I get so angry watching him sexualize his niece and then calling it a normal family moment.
He was grooming children period. Like i don't get how are glossing over the shit he did and got away with. Also like, googling something takes two seconds. No one is too busy to spare two seconds to google something. Like I'm sure a neurosurgeon will occasionally google 'starbucks near me'. It's just such a weird excuse that makes no sense
honestly! like age gaps are only good if the young person is like 20 and the older person is like 35, and that’s even a huuuuge stretch. me and my boyfriend talked for awhile before we dated to make sure we were both ok with the fact that he’s a freshman in college and i’m a junior in high school. that’s only 2 years but we still talked about it for awhiiiiile to make sure it was good with both of us. my point is that if there’s a big age gap (like more than 4 years) the two people should be both adults then it’s like do what you want. but if someone is an adult they absolutely should not be with anyone below 16, and 16 is a stretch. 16 is only in terms of like when you’re 18 kind of thing. i’m rambling but everyone here agrees with me so y’all get the point. anyway, have a great day
@@louloudaki_ Yeah, exactly this. And even with 16 and 18, you should still make sure to educate yourselves on stuff like power dynamics and signs of abuse or manipulation, not just to keep yourself safe but also to avoid doing any harm. It might work out, but it'd take more conscious effort to keep things healthy. (Speaking from experience being in a 2-3yr-age-gap relationship that turned out horrible. Even the nicest people can get drunk with power if it's not worked on...)

What I did was not alright and just because I had my issues doesn’t negate the fact that I hurt people that I love. The difference is that I got help and got clean, got on medication for my PTSD was in intensive therapy for about 5 months. My family supported me 100% through the whole process and I profusely apologized and made amends with everyone I hurt. I then started paying them back for all the stuff I took. The point of this is to say that I learned from my mistakes, apologized and made everything right between myself and my family and DIDNT CONTINUE TO DO IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND THEN BLAME IT ON MY MENTAL ILLNESS.

@@SabrinaZ99 Yeah, the Pewdiepie n-word controversy was back in 2016/2017 (the infamous bridge stream, I think it was COD or some shooting game popular at the time.) It was relatively a big ass deal in the TH-cam space (him being the most subscribed youtuber and all that.) Though, honestly the whole thing is kinda old news. Like with Shane Dawson and Jeffrey Star the n-word scandals despite being longer ago were only further context to how these creators respond to and justify their overall toxic behavior (Shane’s done far worse, Jeffrey has done more racist shit since.) Pewdiepie apologized multiple times regarding that single incident, was semi-cancelled at the time (His youtube show was pulled, his sponsors were pulled, he practically became enemy no. 1 on the Media’s shit-list.) and uploading nearly everyday since he hasn’t had another major controversy in 5 years. (the only criticism I really hear about Pewds is that bridge incident and a fivver incident that happened in that same time period.) This isn’t any justification to why Pewdiepie said the word or me saying that it’s fine that he did. I stopped watching him in 2014 and when I heard he said that word I stayed away until the whole T-Series subscriber war. I just wanna provide some context on why Pewdiepie is probably seen more favorably then Shane or Jeffrey or even Tana or Jake Paul despite similar actions, cause none of the others STOPPED at the n-word, they all did other shitty things that made them extremely unlikeable and to many unforgivable.
My golden rule for kinks, is; "As long as it doesnt upset, harass, or (unwillingly) hurt anyone, and is legal, and its all consensual, then do what you want." Pedophilia does *not* fall under these things and is therefore not okay. At all.
i took a class in college about human sexuality in psychology and my professor said pedophilia will never be justified as there is no situation where children would be safe. the only difference between a kink and a paraphilia is consent.
All this hate just screams “I hate he’s more successful than me” Shane has made millions and can retire with enough money to give his kids retirement, there is no cancelling a YT legend
props to the pink haired woman that called him out on his bullshit when it wasn't the most popular or widely accepted thing to do so! it takes balls to call out creators, especially back then!
My big thing now is I don’t trust anyone who calls themselves an empath cause of people like shane. If you have to say how nice you are you’re not nice.
pretending that pedophilia is 'just a kink' is probably the actual reason why my bff's little brother, who was like, 14 at the time, used to say the same thing to justify it when grown-ass people used to make advances towards him on the internet. Literally making kids feel like they have to justify their abuse is fuckin disgusting.
I totally agree. I grew up in a racist, homophobic household and a society which made me think discrimination against other minority groups is normal. But after being introduced to the internet and some good content creators, I realised my mindset is completely wrong and have since then changed my ways. If teenagers on the internet can do it, so can you, Shane Dawson

I mean being brought up in a racist homophobic household doesn't exempt you from criticism but you should understand the struggles of leaving something drilled into you as a child.
it's crazy that I watched his stuff and the past, and it disturbed me, especially this one sketch he made about people eating "shit sandwhiches" and other weird "rape" related jokes, suicide and etc, and i pretended to enjoy his content bc he was popular back in middle school. i cringe...
Exactly! It really gets on my nerves when people try to justify their shitty behaviour with “I’ve been under a lot of pressure”, or “I have a mental illness”, or “I had a bad childhood”. None of that matters. As someone with GAD (generalised anxiety disorder) and moderate depression and currently living a bad childhood? Yeah, at no point would I choose to harm others.
I do understand your comment, and I agree that having a traumatic childhood should not excuse you from abusing or using others for any reason. But having mental illnesses are difficult. I'm mainly making this reply to Pupville. Childhood is the years that influence us. We more start to get our own opinions around 14 maybe 16, but they are based on the foundation we were taught and how we interpreted it. People may be extremely angry one day because of something that's happened to them recently and that's how they've learned to cope. If they're using it for an excuse, fair enough, but there's another part of it where they many be genuinely trying and don't know how. When it's a repeated behavior, that's when you truly know. So, please don't just get at people for saying they've been stressed lately and are behaving differently than normal.
@@seagoddess9937 - Oh no, of course. Mental illnesses and childhood experiences influence people's behaviours as they grow. That's not really debatable. I essentially just mean that whatever you're going through doesn't justify abuse or bigotry. The same goes for people under pressure. It's understandable for them to lash out. However, personal pressure doesn't excuse treating people horrendously is all. Frankly, often I would dismiss the abuse inflicted on myself with "well, they're stressed out" and other such things, and there's simply a fine line to tread. Sorry for the slight misunderstanding :0
@@seagoddess9937 I 100% see where you're coming from, but we really can't say that they're actions were even somewhat "justified". For example, if a killer was raised in a family of killers and taught that it was okay... We're not going to set them free because they thought he did nothing wrong. That's not how life works. However, we should be patient with them and try to help in whatever way we can. We shouldn't feel like their hatred and actions are valid because of their childhood/mental health.

One of my favorite book series plays with Racial stereotypes in a more positive light like it will present you with a person from an Minority race that has a certain stereotype, only to just flip it on it's head or blame that stereotype on another thing (for example there was a black man named Jim who was presented as a Thug, however it turns out that Jim was actually pretty smart and educated and only acted like a thug to get people to underestimate him, or for blaming it on another thing there was this Asian character Dali who was bad at driving {Asian stereotype} however it turned out that was because she is nearly blind not anything to do with her race she's just blind, the literal most stereotypical thing that happened that wasn't flipped on it's head was having Dali teach the MC about an Asian religion)

Feel like people gave him too much leeway cos he’s a youtuber and kept spinning it all as humour and “it’s not real” but if you personally knew someone who kissed children, called them sexy, and was in online video chats with them, you’d be reporting him to the police.
@@thesun5275it’s even worse because Tana came out later and said they recorded that video when she was STILL 17! and just waited until after her birthday to upload it. That’s why I’m the video, they keep reiterating that she’s finally 18 so it’s fine

That “family moment” excuse pisses me off. If I heard my relative speaking that way to my 12-year-old niece, I’d pull her the hell away from him, I’d tell her parents, I’d be ready to punch him if he even looked in her direction again. You shouldn’t be making jokes like that with ANY minors around, but “they’re my family” is not the defense he thinks it is. It’s even more disgusting.
THANK YOU!!!! I'm so tired of hearing the 'uneducated' excuse. What classes does he believe others were taking in school that they were taught not to act racist. Just being a person is all the education you need. Choosing an attitude of white superiority is 100% a choice, and it's not like Shane was in the deep south growing up, so I doubt that he was receiving racist messaging constantly. This blows my mind, and saying that you need to be better 'educated' to know that Black/Brown/Asian/Middle Eastern people deserve to be treated better tells me all I need to know.
A lot of people miss the historical significance because white people famously ignore racist history. It’s covered up and not taught to young people. I remember 5+ years ago a group of friends at my college did blackface and I was very unpopular for saying that it wasn’t funny, but I’d never seen blackface in acting. You can use commonsense to deduce it’s probably offensive and Shane clearly doesn’t have much sense, but I always see people comment he‘s lying about not being well-educated on of a form of entertainment that’s LONG dead. Weird hill for me to die on as if I’m defending him, but seeing this repeatedly irks me., You bet my friends understand it was a f***ing travesty they did it now that the topic has blown up on social media in recent years and we all learned about the deeply racist past.

@The Horror Report Um, no. “White” people haven’t been plaiting their hair for centuries, bc white is a skin color and not a heritage. Celts, Nords, etc., however, *have* been plaiting their hair for centuries. That’s why it’s not racist to say why people shouldn’t do a certain hair style (btw, plaits might look similar to dreads but are VERY different). White people, as a collective, do not have a shared culture. We might have Irish, European, Spanish, German heritage and traditions, but there is no blanket “white” culture.
I hate when he tries to excuse his horrible behavior on having a bad childhood. Many people have had terrible upbringings and are still good people smh
Danny Keenan except it would because sexual victims try to justify the actions of their abusers for fear that they are the problem and that it was their fault
Love him saying "my movie's not offensive" when his then girlfriend's character's entire point was to be an offensive stereotype of disabled people. Like he realizes that racism isn't the only offensive or hurtful thing, right? (Not saying his movie isn't racist, just saying that it is so blatantly ableist that I don't understand how anyone who has ever met a disabled person could even begin to say it's not offensive).
that whole depiction of homeless people as dirty *shit eating* hobos or whatever is poverty shaming too. was there a group of vulnerable people he didn't go after? punching down seemed to be at the very movie's core. of course wealth is something you can change whereas your skin color or your disabilities are not. however when you're homeless your living situation is often out of your control. the thing all of his "jokes" have in common is that they attack people for things they did not chose. quite literally below the belt; specifically targeting those who are vulnerable or lack a voice for what's basically the crime of *merely existing*
not gonna lie even if he wanted the movie to have dark humour he shouldve handled it completely differently. there are no excuses. for example, Little Britain. sure, it contains stereotypes but its twisted in a manner where its obviously mocking societys perception of the stereotypes rather than the people themselves. e.g. fat fighters was there to make fun of not fat people but rather the course leader who was verbally abusive and narcissistic, andy and lou were there to not mock disablities but rather mock those who use it as a ticket out of doing anything productive whatsoever (e.g. claiming false benefits) theres a difference between dark humour, what he claims he was portraying, and plain ableism, sexism, and racism. there is absolutely no excuse for the movie.
I haven’t seen the movie (or heard of it prior to watching this video) but there’s way too many negative or stereotypical depictions of disabled people in the media that it’s caused so many people with said disabilities to be treated as if they were one of the “stupid people” from the movie/show/game/etc. Because of that a lot of people (like me) have been treated like 💩 at school for doing absolutely nothing wrong, and when neurotypical people do it apparently it’s okay. This is just something that has upset me for a while, don’t mind me. (I have autism and have been forced into harmful programs my whole life despite my parents telling the teachers not to put me in them. Because of the programs I have PTSD and my anxiety disorder has gotten even worse and sudden noises or being touched when not expecting it makes me really anxious and sometimes I might hit someone/thing as a reflex.)

Also, Blackface was always meant to be cruel and racist. There may be times when someone thought painting their face wasnt the same thing or something, but that isnt what Shane was doing as he was clearly mocking Black people based on racist stereotypes in an extreme way. The 50s wasnt really that long ago, but 2011 or 2014 definitely was not; I can understand why someone under 20 can perceive ten years as a long time, but for someone Shane’s age, it isnt, and who thinks 5 years is a long time who isnt literally 5?
I feel like the “it was so long ago” works if you were 8 and said the R word. Definitely not 24 wearing blackface and making pedo jokes. SUPER DIFFERENT
Now here’s the thing I gotta agree it’s super wrong to be it was a long time ago (which definitely isn’t in actual time but when you look at this man was a part of the bringing of the worldwide net since it’s been only 30 years of the launch of it and he’s been a creator since 2006? Or whatever which is 14 years so I can see it be old for that reason.) but it also is wrong to doubt that a hasn’t changed, a year is enough to make one person change in my experience, but if the person isn’t trying to change or is obviously not changing then it’s dumb to defend them and say it’s fine, this is true because as soon as the they acknowledge the fact they must start to somewhat change. later on but in this case it’s been so long where when he first apologized that wasn’t good enough because he didn’t work to make a change, I think that when someone says something offensive and it isn’t funny or just plain wrong that they can change and that’s only when I can see them change, if they don’t make a part to apologize then work on themselves then they don’t deserve the excuse that it was a long time ago cause it wasn’t, things change and one year is enough but if that one year of work doesn’t show or stick after the fact then they aren’t a good person and that what shane exactly did.
Yeah! Like, i can forgive my 90 year old grandma for saying something racist, because that really was a different time, and she was raised on different ideals and morals. But a grown man, raised throughiut the 90s and 00s, has absolutely no excuse for such behaviour.
it’s like what my english teacher says about persuasive essays: “if you oppose a side of an argument, tell me why you are correct, not why the other side is wrong.”
When you read “the most oppressed group is white people in the entertainment industry.” I had to look up front my drawing and couldn’t move for a solid 10 seconds. As a white male, I was ashamed that people say those things.
Everybody in the replies obviously doesn’t know what a minority is. Some people need to do research before they throw themselves all over the internet. The most oppressed minority is straight white upper class Christian males with a conservative wife and a son.
The second you paint your face a darker colour (with the exception of unnaturally coloured characters with non-human skintones) thats not cosplay thats just racist ✨
@@coal1818 that's true that's something all us cosplayers get if want to cosplay as a darker character we won't change our skin color we just dress up as the character as least cosplayers know that blackface is wrong.
With the “pedophillia is just a kink” thing, many serial killers get off to murdering people so why is that illegal? It’s not like pedophillia hurts anyone, oh wait. It does. There’s so many traumatized children who grew up being groomed and sexually abused. I watched a documentary a while ago about what it was like to be raised by a sexually abusive family member and it was just awful. Children don’t want to speak up against an authority figure even if they’re uncomfortable.
What Shane did to Franchesca Ramsey is such blatant emotional manipulation. He wasn’t even upset that he hurt her, just upset that she might hate him. It’s so infuriating too because, as you said, he clearly hasn’t changed.
When people say they were “young and still learning about racism” I expect slip ups like maybe saying the n-word on accident when singing along to a song, not putting on black face numerous times on self-uploaded videos and all that other crazy shit. Maaaan do folks use that phrase liberally to avoid accountability 😒🤦♂️
also "young and learning about racism" is for when you're like, 12. maybe up to 14/15 to learn how prejudice impacts poc in a more in-depth way, and if you're white you do spend your whole life learning new things that you will never personally experience. but by the time you reach your late teens/early adulthood you should fucking know that slurs and blackface = bad, like jesus christ
@@starberry5405 i mean just because youre white doesnt mean you wont experience the same types of things because of religion or other things like im white but i get a lot of shit for being jewish.
@@monke980 sadly the world is influenced by more than just one prejudice. Your bad experiences with religious intolerance don't invalidate racism towards black people or vice versa.
Yes that is true in the first half,I used to say the n word once in a while when I was about five only at home though and I knew it was bad but I thought it was just another bad word and only learned the meaning about 2 years ago(I was eight I’m ten now) and I’ve never used it since because I know it hurts people and THE FACT THAT I A TEN YEAR OLD KNOWS ABOUT RACISM AND BLACK FACE AND A 24 YEAR OLD DIDNT HOOOOOW
As a kid I once attempted to watch a Shane Dawson video but my older brother yelled at me and told me it was spam and if I watched his videos I’d get a virus on the computer. Im so grateful for him 😌
Your brother is so ahead of his time😅 i never watched shane’s vids even as a kid but i dont even know the reason why, just felt like i wasnt into his content, so yeah, grateful for both of our conditions lmao
I get what you mean, but I think that's largely cause he's an extremely anxious person. But also that's not really a problem, you know? That's more of why you are or aren't a part of his audience.
Henry G. I have anxiety, very severe in fact. A few weeks ago I got so anxious I made myself sick. I don’t think anyone would describe me as not being genuine.
I would definitely say you're in the minority on that I've always felt that he came across as genuine in both his mistakes and his successes. Did genuineness is him being defensive because when you're accused of something that you don't feel like you're guilty of of course you're going to be defensive but the activist he is some sort of predator on the level of R Kelly is ridiculous
I think what Shane said about "not understanding" why pedophiles aren't allowed to look up search terms like "naked baby" and jerk off to them was particularly showing of his character. He NEVER seems to take the other party into account. I bet he was one of those people at the start of covid that was like "Oh yeah, we should just have stores be open for only a couple hours a day with mandatory masking so that others who don't want to wear them can take the greater risk on their own time - even though this COMPLETELY forgets that staff are, in fact, people.
What is insane to me is the number of people who say “Why are y’all just now getting mad about his content?” As if black people and other POC haven’t been speaking about Shame Slawson’s racism since the start. Just because non POC were oblivious to his racism until now doesn’t mean POC were. Like D’Angelo mentioned, his black face vids were minstrel shows, PERIODT
"Why didn't you say anything sooner?" Ummm, maybe because those who did were faced with hoards of angry fans harassing and threatening them constantly? Maybe because they didn't have a platform? Maybe because POC voices are being amplified way more than they ever had so you just notice more now? Maybe that's a bad faith argument made to dismiss criticisms of past behavior? Nahhh, it's definitely that we're just riding the trend and our words are meaningless. Definitely that.
Yeah, but it's not just that. Im a black woman and was completely unaware of his past, I discovered him from his conspiracy videos and his fanbase and his fake persona definitely fooled me for a while. It wasn't till a few months ago that one of my friends told me about his past. Just because time has passed doesn't make his actions any less disturbing!
Let's talk about Shane writing in this autobiography that he was "such a cute kid, [he] was surprised [he] was never molested", and then all of a sudden claiming to have been molested when it would suit his "it's because I'm fucked up" narrative... Seems like he knows abuse victims sometimes perpetuate abuse, and he's decided to use that fact as a defense, when it's not actually clear if anything happened to him or not. Edt: as someone who WAS abused sexually as a child, I can tell you that I cannot imagine ever making a "joke" about being "surprised I was never molested" because I was a "cute" child, even if I was trying to deny to myself that it happened. I could never see a way to blame the child for being cute instead of the predator being SICK. That's some predator thinking, not victim thinking.
I believe the sentiment he expressed was that he was 'offended' that he wasn't molested, which is worse really. Shane claims that he wasn't ready to face the truth when he wrote that book early on, however he has no memory of being molested, and only thinks he was because a therapist told him it was likely due to his behaviour. So yes, the jury is out on that, but he says it when convenient. By the way, there was a study on incarcerated child sex offenders that found at least half of them who claimed to have been molested were lying. It's a hard study to find but it's out there. The researchers used lie detectors as part of the methodology. It's available on the internet if anyone's interested enough to look for it.
@@themudpit621 The only risk in that study is that lie detectors are notoriously unreliable. Even their inventor was aghast when they started being used by police for actual cases and tried to get them to stop. Now certain places won't prosecute without the detector due to 'insufficient evidence'
I can’t stand when people who are offensive say, “I’m not racist/homophobic/pedophilic! I was just in a dark place 😔” Like bro... I’ve been severely depressed for about 8 years now and I’ve never used a racial/homophobic slur or joked about sexual trauma. If you’re not all of those bad things your mind doesn’t think to act on it.
he talks like he was born yesterday and didn't even know what racism was - as a white kid in an almost entirely white neighbourhood and school, I somehow learnt that racism and racist slurs are bad by the time I reached high school, and here is a man in his 20s repeatedly doing blackface and pretending he didn't know it was wrong
Hannah Kat couldn't agree with you more. It's unbelievable that it's an argument he's trying to use. Unless he was raised in a cult out in woop woop, it doesn't hold.
His introduction honestly seems to ...uh...contradict the things he showed in the video. How in the world does all of this NOT show that Shane is a person that actually does deserve to be de-platformed since he never ever learns?
Tatiana Avery for real...as if these platforms wouldn’t be better off without him 💀 there are far too many other people in this world for anyone to be worrying about a grown white man’s undeserved career
em ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ absolutely! Why should I care that a MILLIONAIRE who lives in a mansion and will be well off for the rest of his life lost his career for horrible things he continuously does and never learns from?
I'm literally European and learned about black face and the Jim Crow era in general in my English class... but yeah, an American not knowing about racism against non-white people in his own country is 100% believable.
@@mbrammy7 I’m an Aussie and I didn’t really learn about this stuff in school at all (I went to Catholic schools for 11 years). We focused mainly on the World Wars, Aus history, and ancient history as far as I remember. I wish I’d learnt more about these issues though. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was just a Catholic school thing and maybe this was taught at State schools. EDIT: I learnt some stuff in an optional Modern History class when I was 16 and out of Catholic school, but it should’ve been taught earlier.
@@eddiejames4006 - my history education was very similar and I attended public schools and went to probably the best funded public high school in the state but the curriculum was similar, we mostly focused on Australian history and then mostly world history in High School and I was not actually taught about the Atlantic-slave trade in school, but just googled it when I was in high school because I was confused about the history of African Americans, I think as a young child I had assumed African Americans were immigrants just like my African Australian friends who were 1st/2nd gen immigrants I completely agree and I do wonder if other Australian kids have a similar experience I did while growing up consuming so much American media
Beyond the school thing, we (Americans) are drowning in discourse about identity and ethnicity and all that. Movies, TV shows, books, music...there is no way Shane didn't come across something outside of school, at some point, that referenced blackface. The reason he found it funny and edgy to say the n-word and do blackface was because it shocked people. He knew it would be shocking. Why was it shocking? Because it's extremely offensive to an entire group of people. There is no way, between school and general media exposure, he didn't know what he was doing.
Shane completely missed out the fact that he made up his own black characters; one of them was super disturbing. He portrayed black people as less than. I believe there is a difference between dressing up as an actual celebrity regardless of race versus dressing up as black people to make fun of them.
Also, Shanaynay (from my 10+ years ago memory when I last watched his stuff) was white, and practically everything she said or did was racist and/or perpetuating harmful stereotypes anyway.
@@Tw0DotsI know our experiences are different, but after growing up in an Asian community (I’m Chinese-Cambodian), then moving out to a very white, not so friendly to PoC area when I was 12, it was a shock. For a while, I felt like maybe I really was lesser than, until I met another kid who had gone through the same thing. It became easier to see that we were just as good as the others as time went on. I eventually got into fights with people who went too far with picking on me, and got in trouble for defending myself (American public schools in a nutshell). The area has gotten more diverse and friendlier over the years, but it was rough. I find knowing people with similar (but not the same) experiences can validate my struggles and that’s why I shared. Have a good day
The way he treats his underage fans is actually terrifying, considering how many youtubers have been revealed over the years as being inappropriate with underage fans. This kind of culture helps to groom kids for those other creators, even if he didn't actually assault underage fans himself. (Which... y'know, he definitely kinda did)
Wolfz Music Sexual harassment or assault doesn’t necessarily need to be violent, if someone randomly grabs a girls ass who doesn’t want it, that is sexual assault. Unlike general physical assault, but sexual assault can be unwanted sexual advances especially when it is clear the victim doesn’t consent, which minors cannot. It can also be true if the perpetrator uses power, status, or a threat to convince the victim. One could argue that Shane kissing an underage girl was taking advantage of his status. Please don’t spread potentially damaging narratives about some sort of image you have seen these things portrayed as. The truth is that especially for minors, many things qualify as assault or harassment, and most minors don’t come forward about it for awhile if at all, because of ideas that it has to be inherently “violent.”
Emma Sab With sexual assault, you need to touch that person. When Shane made that girl twerk or said disgusting things towards fans, that is not sexual assault. Yes it’s obviously terrible but it isn’t assault since in those instances he didn’t touch anyone.
Shane uses his metal illnesses as an excuse. As someone with depression and anxiety(everyone is different im just using mine as an example) i can say that its not an excuse not to own up to my actions. If I said something that offended someone, im not going to use my anxiety as an excuse not to deal with the situation.
i second that. i have a lot of social anxiety and other anxiety-based problems daily but that doesn’t make me wanna be disrespectful to a group of people for “humor” shane is just a terrible person.
I've dealt with mental illness from age nine and even as a child I was able to recognize that even though I couldn't always control the emotions I was experiencing it didn't make it okay for me to do something hurtful or wrong. People who use mental illness as a get-out-of-jail-free card make it harder for those of us (pretty much all of us) that are just out here living our lives and working to get to and stay in a good place. Thanks for repping the decent humans out here dealing with mental issues.
5:27 I did a bit of digging, and it’s almost impossible that Shane didn’t know what blackface was. According to Wikipedia and information from his books, he was born in 1988 and went to Lakewood High in Long Beach, California. Using some simple math, I figured out he would have been in high school in the years around 2004. Looking at the school’s current social science classes and the California standards of education, he would have definitely taken U.S. History at some point, which includes learning about the Jim Crow era. The term “Jim Crow” was literally in reference to a RACIST BLACKFACE CARICATURE, so unless he paid no attention to history at any point during this unit, Shane would have learned the meaning and historical context. If he grew up in a state with deep Confederate history, I may have given him the benefit of the doubt, but he’s from my state. He knew exactly what he was doing.
Shane’s US History teacher: “The Jim Crow laws, named after a popular blackface minstrel show known for racist jokes, were essentially successors to the fugitive slave acts and- Shane: *_I’ma pretend I didn’t see that_*
I'm sorry if I sound stupid but, what do you mean by giving him a benefit of a doubt if he was from a state with deep Confederate roots? I'm from Alabama, which I assume is an example of what you are talking about (again forgive me if I'm completely wrong), and I have learned about the Jim Crow era many times and that it was a horrible time in history, especially considering the things Alabama did during that time. So even if Shane was in a state with deep Confederate roots, he would still learn about blackface and how horrible it is. Edit: I realize my comment was unnecessary and comes across as defensive which was not my intent, but that's my fault for not writing this comment better. I think what Shane did was inexcusable and unjustifiable, and I reacted negatively to someone saying they would give him the benefit of a doubt which did not even matter as it was only for a hypothetical situation. I apologize for jumping the gun, I wanted to explain what I thought might have been an excuse when I should have made sure i understood all of what they were saying in order to provide a comment that would have contributed to the conversation instead of derailing it.
Holy darn. I don't mean to defend him in any way, but _I_ didn't know that! I thought "Jim Crow" was the man who enforced these laws. that's a criticism of our horrible us education system. still doesn't absolve him of blatant racism tho
The issue is that as a victim of grooming during my childhood, a lot of Shane's actions are IDENTICAL to how my neighbor treated me. I'm not saying he's actively groomed anyone, but the fact that he was normalizing that time of behavior just isn't right.
It's always baffled me that he was able to skirt these allegations for so long. I'm 37 and I remember when Ted Danson got in trouble for blackface in 1993. You don't get to make these garbage takes, wait 10 years and get to tell people that it was a different time back then. No. We're better than this.
Super Nicktendo I hear this a lot. I think what he means is that the Internet was just super racist back then. So if everyone is, it’s not out of place for him to be. And, yeah, I remember it being extremely racist. It doesn’t mean that it was right for him to do it, but he is right in saying that everyone was racist, or at least making a lot of racist “jokes.” Again, wasn’t correct for him, or anyone else, but it was popular at the time.
the scary thing is, the other day he posted on his instagram story something about having this book for their “future child” and that made me really… uncomfortable. he is a grown man that sexualizes children and teens. I don’t think he should ever have a child of his own, that is scary.
Oh my-I swear to god they better change their mind or Ryland leaves or someone stops them! cause I cannot 🤢🤢🤢🤢 we cannot have this man abuse his child in any way!
Sad thing is i used to be a huge fan of Shane when i was 13 until 14 years old. So thanks to him making sexual assault, self harm, etc, normal, it led me to believe it was normal to be hurt in my own personal life. I am a victim of sexual, mental, and physical abuse. I had no clue what any of those things were until a friend opened my eyes and made me realize what was happening to me. People can come at me and say it was my fault or my parents failed me but i believe society let me down. My parents tried to teach me those important life lessons but i said it was gross and refused to listen because those types of things were something that was not taught correctly to me at school and people online proved to be no help as well. Sex jokes were funny and being abused by guys was something to be taken lightly because it was a “joke”. The internet does influence young minds. Protect your kids by teaching them internet behavior and real life behavior as well. This world is already crazy enough. Build a better future.
I used to like him too, he made me ignorant of my own mentally abusive relationship. I think that he deserves 100% to be de-platformed because he is influencing young minds to become more like him. And I’ll be damned if I let a bunch of kids have to go through what I did without help. I was lucky to have someone like I did to help me and I know that there are people out there who don’t. So f*ck Shane and f*ck manipulators
tw / abuse About to make a similar comment you had. It really hurts how I was so young and I had no idea how much negative impact he has done. I was also in a similar mentally and sexually abusive relationship and was in a very bad place. I couldn't see what was wrong because Shane is normalizing those things.
I was in a dark place. I was abused. I have anxiety Not that mental illness or abuse don't matter but it's obvious that these people hide behind them when it benefits the situation.
Also it shouldn't contain any justification. It undermines the apology when you put a bunch of buts and excuses in there. If you are still going to justify your racism and awfulness with 'but I had a rough childhood' or 'but I didn't mean it in a bad way' you are not apologising.
My least favourite kind of apology has to be "I hurt other people and now I feel yucky, help me" and Shane Dawson seems only capable of making that kind of apology
I don’t remember them being bffs. I think they were in contact but famously shame kinda ghosted Greg and that’s why he hates him now. They only kissed on a dare or spin the bottle at a convention they met at
As an ex shane “stan”, I’ve just gotta say that seeing him this new not so flattering light is pretty gross. I myself have had a pretty turbulent life, and I can earnestly say that Shane’s repeated use of the “my childhood sucked” line means absolute jack. I’ve been raised on the idea of taking RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS. The word sorry loses it’s power after the first couple times you use it to apologize for something; after a certain point it just becomes completely disingenuous. What he’s doing/what he’s been doing is just straight up manipulation.
Exactly and we have to acknowledge sometimes bad people come out of bad situations, it's like he thinks if he mentions his childhood we'll all go.. Aww you really are a good person.. Like nope
I don’t understand how people believe that just because you’ve had a bad childhood or been through trauma that it justifies every bad thing they ever do like no it doesn’t
@@silh3345 Exactly. As someone who’s living in a abusive and/or toxic (I don’t really know where the difference begins) I can say is not an excuse. It can influence how you act and be a reason, but that won’t be an excuse.
I have a young daughter and if I saw an adult content creator saying things to her that Shane said to those young girls, I would be losing my fucking mind.
yeah im very surprised he hasnt been faced legal action or at least gone through some kind or trouble by parents of the kids he basically assaulted. i would go absolutely ape shit if i saw someone doing that to any child let alone MY child
Jarvis, I respectfully disagree that Shane can help educate his audience. He has shown no interest in that. I also would like to see him leave this platform.
Same. There are millions of smaller creators who would do a better job at educating people. Any energy that we could devote to giving Shane another chance is energy we should be spending on supporting better people in the first place.
Yep our generation is pretty messed up but some of the generations before us are even worse. I mean look at boomers, some aren't bad but others like my father think women are property.
He’s not using it as an excuse he’s using it as a tool to explain why he did what he did. Not to excuse it but to explain it. If you grow up in a world that is a certain way everyone tends to become that way until somebody finally takes initiative to change it and then everybody starts seeing why it’s like that. Back in the 70s if you were gay 90% of the people thought it was a sin and that you should die or you should go to conversion camps because they were following along to a book that said you should be that way and everybody was like that so nobody wanted to stray from it so that they wouldn’t be ridiculed. If you were surrounded by the same type of thing you were gonna wanna become like that thing you aren’t gonna wanna be different because you aren’t gonna want to be hurt for being different. I had a bad childhood I had a bad upbringing I don’t excuse my actions because of it but I use it as a tool to understand and to explain why I was that way. No I didn’t have the worst childhood or some people but it was still pretty shitty my father ended up leaving me for someone else and decided to father of their children instead of being a father to his child that he already had my mother before that left because of the bad situation that she was in with my father and I wasn’t able to see her very often, I have attachment issues I don’t excuse but I have done because of those with my friends because of the fact that I was left and felt alone so many times in my childhood but it explains it it explains why I have that survival instinct in my head to whoever I can cling onto to cling onto them and never let them go and try to blackmail them and everything just to keep them so that I am not left once again. But that doesn’t mean I’m gonna be like that forever that was in the past I can’t judge myself for the past I can judge myself for what I do now I have gotten the help I needed so if I continue to make that pattern then it becomes more of a problem because I have tried to better myself and I have learned from those mistakes and if I do it again that’s my fault. My friend is an adoptee she has reactive attachment disorder she was Taken in by a good family young enough to where they were able to work on that but she got react attachment shorter because of the upbringing she was in because of the torture she was in before getting adopted it doesn’t excuse how she’ll act but it explains every reason why she was the way she was and she still has to deal with some of those aspects in her day-to-day life now as it is . I am sick and tired of people not allowing people to have trauma and not allowing people to have trauma in their own ways to not allow people to have the same affects that are normalized from other peoples trauma. Every single fucking case of trauma is different just as every person is different every fucking effect from trauma is different. I can make you act one way just so that you don’t get that trauma anymore our brains are complicated systems that’s how when you’re young and you have trauma it can just break into multiple fucking personalities. If you can excuse somebody’s D ID from their childhood then you can excuse other things from peoples childhood because that just shows you the effect that trauma can have on you to where you can be multiple different fucking people just to protect yourself if you were bullied and hated on for most your life the older you get the more you’ll try to feed into what people want so that you aren’t hated anymore if I was being tortured in my day-to-day life or being different in the way to be normal was to joke about Black people and joke about different cultures and all that shit I fucking would because I don’t want to be constantly throwing shit out by everybody I know by the whole world just for being that way pressure gets to you it changes you it changes how everybody is it’s different for everybody how many times do I have to fucking say it you can’t excuse what he did not buy 1 million chances but you can take his upbringing and you can start explaining an understanding why it made him who he was and then you can understand that as the world changed and help everybody started realizing that wasn’t OK how he was able to change and better himself and learn from those fucking mistakes that he regrets and that he wishes never happened and that he is a different fucking person
I genuinely think Shane did an immense amount of harm to me as a child. Especially when it comes to race. I had a lot of unlearning to do as I got older and I have no doubt that some amount of that was caused by Shane's content which I watched when I was WAY too young. I knew it was wrong to watch shane too cause I wouldn't show his videos to my mom. Toby Turner, who as it would later end up being just as bad, I could show to my mom. But I never showed shane to her or any of my family.
"let's not use hobo to talk about homeless people" thank you for saying that dude, growing up watching shows like icarly it made me really uncomfortable when they used that term. they used it for comedic effect all the time, and it had the opposite effect for me. don't get me wrong, that show was mostly awesome, but there's no need to use hurtful slang for people already in a shit situation.
I completely agree although I will say that my great grandfather was a hobo (It was the thirties and he hopped trains, so I feel like when talking about homeless people in recent times hobo isn't acceptable)
the words "here's my justification for pedophilia" are a big red flag in the first place, those are words that should never be uttered and it's interesting that Shane doesn't include the fact he said this to preface his comment in his own video.
dude sounded like a perp from law and order: svu with that one. like... he really said that with his ENTIRE CHEST. i refuse to believe it was a bit because frankly shane isn't a great actor.
Shane needs to make a series where he looks back at his past and educates himself. He can have discussions to victims of things that he has done or people of color and learn from his mistakes. A series like this could help him educate the people who watch his content.
Shane may have had a poor childhood but its his responsibility to deal with that trauma in a mature way. He can’t keep blaming his past for his current actions

If you go too old fashioned then you go around the bend to no consent
Honestly, the age difference isn't that bad but they need to be adults and aware of their actions. Kids/minors shouldn't be exposed to sexual content outside sex ed.
@@vaishnavisingh9244 oh I understand you're a walking contradiction

I mean, it's not his fun-loving style but... It still would have shocked and upset people (because you aren't supposed to pity people who have taboo mental disorders!) But at least then when people took it out of context he'd actually have been the victim of ignorance rather than the purveyor and therefore have a defensible position.
I don't think him saying all this "eww pedophilia is soooo totally gross, disgusting, icky icky yuck yuck you guyzzz" (yes I paraphrased but same drift) bullshit makes me feel any less uncomfortable with his actual stance towards the topic (which ostensibly is that it's not so bad as long as they're at least 12, buy your merch, and/or are family!) As a person with a good, long history of mental illness: it isn’t an excuse to be abusive to other people. Not in the least.
I have PTSD and I am an addict and was in active addiction for about 5 years. I treated my family like garbage and did some really fucked up stuff for money.

Though, honestly the whole thing is kinda old news. This isn’t any justification to why Pewdiepie said the word or me saying that it’s fine that he did.

@The Horror Report Um, no. “White” people haven’t been plaiting their hair for centuries, bc white is a skin color and not a heritage. not gonna lie even if he wanted the movie to have dark humour he shouldve handled it completely differently. there are no excuses. for example, Little Britain. sure, it contains stereotypes but its twisted in a manner where its obviously mocking societys perception of the stereotypes rather than the people themselves. e.g. fat fighters was there to make fun of not fat people but rather the course leader who was verbally abusive and narcissistic, andy and lou were there to not mock disablities but rather mock those who use it as a ticket out of doing anything productive whatsoever (e.g. claiming false benefits)
theres a difference between dark humour, what he claims he was portraying, and plain ableism, sexism, and racism. there is absolutely no excuse for the movie.

It's not a secret that blackface and stereotyping are racist lmao. It's not hard to figure out. I simply don't have sympathy
this!! it was only a few years ago, and you can tell he hasn’t changed at all
Also, Blackface was always meant to be cruel and racist.

I would definitely say you're in the minority on that I've always felt that he came across as genuine in both his mistakes and his successes. Did genuineness is him being defensive because when you're accused of something that you don't feel like you're guilty of of course you're going to be defensive but the activist he is some sort of predator on the level of R Kelly is ridiculous
it feels like there's a mask he puts on when he films videos... and maybe everyone does, but his is more off-putting
Also I was literally 8 lol. I didn’t even discover Shane until his conspiracy videos. Had no idea about the start he had. Yucky

Im a black woman and was completely unaware of his past, I discovered him from his conspiracy videos and his fanbase and his fake persona definitely fooled me for a while. It wasn't till a few months ago that one of my friends told me about his past. Just because time has passed doesn't make his actions any less disturbing!
I've never watched his stuff. I'd heard the legends of his controversies, but had no idea about their depth until...this video now.
That T at the end though

Exactly.
Absolutely.
i second that. i have a lot of social anxiety and other anxiety-based problems daily but that doesn’t make me wanna be disrespectful to a group of people for “humor”
shane is just a terrible person.
@KILEY KITTRIDGE yes!! It makes others with the same illness look bad

Damn you did some serious Sherlock Holmes investigation🔎
Shane’s US History teacher: “The Jim Crow laws, named after a popular blackface minstrel show known for racist jokes, were essentially successors to the fugitive slave acts and-
Shane: *_I’ma pretend I didn’t see that_*
I'm sorry if I sound stupid but, what do you mean by giving him a benefit of a doubt if he was from a state with deep Confederate roots?
I thought "Jim Crow" was the man who enforced these laws. that's a criticism of our horrible us education system. still doesn't absolve him of blatant racism tho
damn you really came through with the reciepts 💀
The issue is that as a victim of grooming during my childhood, a lot of Shane's actions are IDENTICAL to how my neighbor treated me. I'm not saying he's actively groomed anyone, but the fact that he was normalizing that time of behavior just isn't right.
Exactly. Im sort you had to go through that. Anyone who acts like that, even if they havent groomed anyone, is a danger to society in their own way.
@@lilyhart3204 Sorry *
“We’re better than this” we literally elected an obese, racist, pedophile as president.

the scary thing is, the other day he posted on his instagram story something about having this book for their “future child” and that made me really… uncomfortable. he is a grown man that sexualizes children and teens.
That’s so awful that you went through that. I hope you’re doing well now ❤️
I used to like him too, he made me ignorant of my own mentally abusive relationship. I think that he deserves 100% to be de-platformed because he is influencing young minds to become more like him. And I’ll be damned if I let a bunch of kids have to go through what I did without help. I was lucky to have someone like I did to help me and I know that there are people out there who don’t. So f*ck Shane and f*ck manipulators
tw / abuse
About to make a similar comment you had. It really hurts how I was so young and I had no idea how much negative impact he has done. I was also in a similar mentally and sexually abusive relationship and was in a very bad place. I couldn't see what was wrong because Shane is normalizing those things.
What you went through was no way your fault

12:50 an apology should never start with “ I cAnT bELiEVE i HaVe tO Do tHis. I cAnT bELiEVE tHiS iS HaPpeNinG”
Right
Also it shouldn't contain any justification. It undermines the apology when you put a bunch of buts and excuses in there. If you are still going to justify your racism and awfulness with 'but I had a rough childhood' or 'but I didn't mean it in a bad way' you are not apologising.
nut videis
My least favourite kind of apology has to be "I hurt other people and now I feel yucky, help me" and Shane Dawson seems only capable of making that kind of apology
Friendly reminder that Shane and Onision talked for awhile-
Oh they were best buds for a bit more than a while
And did you know they kissed???!? 😳😳😳
Onision loves to remind everyone about that
he was in a brandon rogers video and i’m confused
I don’t remember them being bffs. I think they were in contact but famously shame kinda ghosted Greg and that’s why he hates him now. They only kissed on a dare or spin the bottle at a convention they met at
@@sawyer2044 wait, was it shane or Greg that was in a brandon Rodgers video?
Also what annoys me in his last apology is that when he refers to his actions, he says "this person" a lot, like it's not him he's talking about.
That lights been hella public since his 1st video

Exactly.

I think they used the term for Sam and Cat, as well.
I had no idea it was offensive. Thank you for informing me. If I may ask, what is wrong with the term?
They don't even use the word right
Yeah idk if hobos offensive chief
the words "here's my justification for pedophilia" are a big red flag in the first place, those are words that should never be uttered and it's interesting that Shane doesn't include the fact he said this to preface his comment in his own video.
dude sounded like a perp from law and order: svu with that one. like... he really said that with his ENTIRE CHEST. i refuse to believe it was a bit because frankly shane isn't a great actor.
Shane needs to make a series where he looks back at his past and educates himself. He can have discussions to victims of things that he has done or people of color and learn from his mistakes. A series like this could help him educate the people who watch his content.
this is the content we're asking for
