They were demanding food and it appears that in the past they had the tendency to invade Joe's aunt's house to eat. She was "trying" to tell them NO, but she lost and they all crashed in for food and showers
I have a few additional facts to add about the film,Twister. As someone from Oklahoma, I’m very happy that this film was made to allow others to see what we experience every year in the Spring, however tornadoes can happen thru out the year, if the conditions are right. I have even seen a pea green sky when I was 14, when a tornado destroyed a nearby town of Union City! Here’s some more interesting facts! 1) The field project sponsored by NOAA and University of Oklahoma did exist under the name TOTO (TOtable TOrnado observatory) This took place during our tornado seasons from 1981-1984. Unfortunately it wasn’t as successful as it was in the film! 2) The town Wakita 24 months prior to filming the movie had grapefruit sized hail, which is believed why it was chosen for the film! 3) The farm that survived the tornado at the end of the movie was actually wiped out by a tornado in 2010. 4) Bill Paxton’s thoughts on a more intense Twister film would have definitely been something to see due to he grew up in Ft. Worth, Texas, which is also in Tornado Alley. I’m sure he experienced going down in the cellar a time or two and saw a tornado’s aftermath first hand. 5) We actually experienced a tornado of that magnitude on May 3 and 4th of the year 1999. Multiple supercell thunderstorms on those two days created 72 tornadoes, which killed 40 people and left 3,300 families homeless! The strongest was an EF-5 that developed by the city of Chickasha. It went thru many towns and cities leaving utter destruction before it dissipated back to the sky. It left a path of devastation for miles and miles, which our governor called for a state of emergency that required the National Guard to be called to protect the damaged neighborhoods from looters. There were many people that had severe injuries, such as a woman that was scalped, but they have recovered and are walking miracles! We have since rebuilt and have actually grown, but anyone who was alive and living in Oklahoma on those days can tell you what they were doing at that time. I hope that my additional facts were of interest to your viewers.

I bought VH - Best of Vol 1 just for "Humans Being" because I was using it in a video at my school, but I've listened to that album at least 10x more than any album I've ever owned in my life so far, including the two-disc Rush collection I've forgotten the name of. Case-in-point, I fell back in love with the VH album when I listened to it on a Bose CD player I was repairing in 2009. I was listening through some great headphones I picked up in 2003 (Sennheiser HD480) and it blew my mind all over again, hearing it through something better than my worn-out 1984 car stereo or weaksauce 1994 GPX CD system in high school.

Technically the first "movie" released on DVD was a porno. The first "motion picture feature film" was Twister. Also, I suspect more people released while watching the porno, but I digress.

Older and 1 younger brother went to see it in the theatres and walked out with tornado sirens going off in Southern Minnesota. Tornado ef1 touched down in a field just north of fairmont. Good times
actually the movie helped me understand the meaning of tailgating. When I went to a college in US, people used to tail gate a lot and I never understood the meaning or as to why it was called tail gate. But in the movie Bill Paxton said to Helent Hent, open the tail gate. That is the gate at the back of truck. So I understood the meaning of tail gate. Its called tail gate because people used to drive these trucks to campus and open the tail gates and drank the beer and ate the food kept at the back of the truck. Great.
I remember reading that in 1996 that they were showing Twister at a mid-west drive in, and during the drive-in scene an actual tornado tore through the screen. How is that for 3D!
It was summer 1997 at the drive in movie in McAlister Oklahoma. It wasn't a large tornado but it blew the screen askew. The real freaky thing was, it happened right during the scene where they were at the drive in movie! Maybe it happened somewhere else too, but I sure remember this one!
I always thought the relationship was a good narrative to tie the film together. You have to have something for a story aside from just chasing tornados. The whole group really got on well, great on screen comraderie.
@8:20 as a real storm chaser I always loved the attention to detail here with the giant wedge shaped tornado as they were attentive enough to include the rotating wall cloud/mesocyclone of the parent storm that is often seen with real supercell thunderstorms with strong long tracked tornadoes.
Well, Jan de Bont IS a great cinemtatographer himself - he shot *"Die Hard"* and *"The Hunt For Red October"* for John McTiernan, *"Black Rain"* for Ridley Scott, *"Lethal Weapon 3"* for Richard Donner, *"Flatliners"* for Joel Schumaucher, and *"Flesh+Blood"* and *"Basic Instinct"* for Paul Verhoeven.
You should talk about how Van Halen created two great songs for this movie. "Human Beings" and "Respect the Wind" which is played on the ending credits. Eddie really created a masterpiece with that last song. RIP Eddie
Nope Nope Someone made a comment about not understanding why this part was in the movie. Was just explaining to them why it was in there in the first place.
I knew about him but didn't know about his co-star Hoffman also died fairly recently. My good friend also died of the same circumstances that same year so I probably didn't register it.
The movie was fine on its own, but that soundtrack really hit the spot. Part of me wishes there had been a mix of the Van Halen track “Humans Being” which included the score leading into the sequence when we first hear it. Not to mention, the instrumental that Eddie and Alex assembled for the closing credits, “Respect the Wind”, always sent chills up my spine.
This movie along with Independence Day, Daylight, Volcano, The Day After Tomorrow, Armageddon and Deep Impact are my favourite disaster movies. Plus the last good Jan de Bont film.
All true HollyWeird movies that use special effects and are notoriously inaccurate. Much like the "news"....they're called leftists since they can't get anything right !
I liked Dante's Peak a lot better than Volcano. I always enjoyed disaster films over the years, starting with Earthquake! and the Irwin Allen disaster films. The last good one was The Day After Tomorrow. After that, they started getting tiresome as we'd seen everything with top notch effects. Sure, 2012 had some incredible visuals, but the story was so bad and practically non-existent, and it was a chore to sit through. San Andreas, that movie about a satellite disrupting weather, and others since just no longer hold any interest...they all have a been there done that feel to them.

Just an interesting note about Crichton's wife, Anne-Marie Martin. She played detective Dori Doro an the tv series Sledge Hammer from '86-'88. It was a hilarious show about a nihilistic cop that talked to his gun. The show was kind of a spoof of Dirty harry,. Minty, you should check it out.
Here's another "Thing You Didn't Know" - the idea for the scene where a tornado demolishes a drive-in movie theater was taken from a real life event. In Southwestern Pennsylvania, there was a drive-In called Spotlight 88. On Friday, May 31, 1985 an F3 tornado (the Enhanced Fujita scale wasn't in effect yet) ripped through it and destroyed it. Nobody was there at the time, but many reporters morbidly predicted how bad it could have been if it had happened just a few hours later when the screens were open.
I live in Mt. Orab Ohio and when I was a very young kid about 4 years old we had a twister go thru our hometown drive in called The Lake drive in and destroyed the entire thing. The remnant were still there up until about 2 years ago when they finished demolishing it to build a really reception hall. As kids we used to sneak into the old drive in and spray paint the walls in the concession booth. Or we'd sneak back there and smoke cigs or have a make out session with our girls.
I lived through the tornado in 1985. I was 10. It destroyed a small town outside of Erie Pennsylvania called Albion, another small town called Hermitage and East Kane was wiped out. There is still a path in the Allegheny National Forest where the tornado cut through. This is when I became obsessed with storms.
it was one of the first, yes. Also featuring FULLRATE DTS. Something that many DVDs later didn't have anymore. Some other early titles who had it were "Daylight", "Liar Liar" and "Dante's Peak".
So here's a small story. I remember watching the Drive in scene with my parents and asking what movie they were watching. They told me all about The Shining, and how scary it was. All I wanted to do was watch that next but i wasn't old enough I guess. But when I finally did, that began my interest in the horror genre! Thanks to Twister 😁
As for the prank bugs... Coat them with a very light coating of Vaseline to make them look a little more real. When my wife & I got to see Twister we drove home through a massive North Texas thunderstorm. It was so bad that folks were pulling off the highway. I was going to pull off and go to a gas station except when I did... It was no longer there. A tornado ate it. Lake Dallas REALLY got hammered that night.
Twister was a very significant film & a classic must see from the 90s because it really depicted the damage & devastation Twisters cause to anyrjing that is in their way to a worldwide audience, for that reason alone it is a very important film. Much like Pierce Brosnan's Volcanic Eruption film around the same year or a year later called "Dante's Peak" where he plays a Volcanologist. Another significant film that opened the world's eyes to what can happen when a Super Volcanic eruption takes place, everything within miles is Obliterated.
This movie was awesome! I am from Oklahoma and I remember film crews in Western and Northern Oklahoma asking for extras. One of my best friends was an extra in the film. The town of Wakita became a big tourist attraction after the twister blew it away. Another good reason for the movie to be set in Oklahoma is that the University of Oklahoma has the top meteorology school in the nation. When I was there in the mid to late 80's, I met people from other nations wanting to study meteorology. And as a journalism major, I got to do a story for our campus newspaper about storm or tornado chasers. I hung out with them for two spring weekends chasing storms (most storm chasers don't get that close to twisters). Thanks, Minty! Keep up the great work.

All Sharknado needed was a shark hunter with an Ahab-complex that could also instinctively read a sharknado's next move and who was in the middle of getting divorced to marry a therapist that had been helping him get over his Navy days' PTSD that revolved around a story about a shark that he saw, "miss this guy and miss that guy and come right after you (him!)"

to be fair dude, 1996 did have some strong competition that year when talking about sci-fi/action movies!!! similar thing happened 10 years prior, where "Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home", "The Fly" and "Aliens" were nominated for Academy Awards in the Visual Effects/Make-Up/Sound Effects categories. so with that said, while the visual effects for "Twister" are indeed excellent, but the use of both practical and computer effects for "Independence Day" rightfully deserved its Oscar win.
I really enjoyed the practical jokes kit review at the end. It reminds me of when I was just a lad and would always see ads for that kind of stuff in the back of comic books. Even at that young age I knew they weren't the amazing products the ads claimed they were. 😄

My wife and loved that movie. We could quote parts of it. She is dead now and the movie holds a special place for me. And BTW, the "food" part was the staff begging to go to her aunts house to eat, since she cooked so well. You saw the movie and don't remember that part? The "food food food" thing made more sense to me once you mentioned Joss's involvement. Along with the quippy line of "We require sustenance" That's a total Weadon trait. Now that you revealed his involvement so many of the lines that I loved, totally scream Weadon. Watch Buffy again... you'll see it. :)
We got cows!! One of my favourite lines. First time I saw this movie was at a drive in with a double feature with Executive Decision starring Kurt Russell
You should do one on "Bird on a Wire." PS) My favorite part of this movie was the quirky eccentricity of Paxton's team of storm chasers. They're a bunch of badass science nerds, and that's not something you see too often in movies.

Great review Minty. I was stationed with the Army in Oklahoma in 1995 . I remember seeing news that they were filming this movie while I was there. I actually got to see a tornado (twister) in the distance while we were out training on the back side of the Army Post. Everytime I see the movie it reminds me of my time spent there. This is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time. I completely enjoyed it. It made me want to go into meteorology in high school. Respect the wind by van halen in the ending credits was AMAZING.
Night of the Twisters is an adaptation of a kids book aimed at 8-13 year olds. The book was great when I read it and the movie was a faithful adaptation. I'm sure the success of Twister helped bring the movie version about.
Dusty's hand gestures in the 'food scene' was him signing the word "Food", letter by letter. Those three letters are similar in sign language (especially f and d but it takes very little movement to make an o from either letter). About a thousand people have pointed out the obvious in that they were hungry, but I think Minty's question in the video was more about what the hand gesture was and don't see where anyone else has answered, there you go.
Night of the twisters is a children’s book. I read it in the late 80s so it’s at least that old. Not a bad book considering I still remember parts of it

A film that I loved viewing as a child. I've been loving these videos! Fun fact about something you mentioned in this video: De Bont's Godzilla film he was working on was actually more like the traditional Godzilla. He was going to fight another Monster. TriStar did not want anything to do with his version because of the intended the potential budget. So, He left the project to go and do other things.

LOVE this movie! I had no idea Bill Paxton had died..Awwww...He was a great actor! May he forever rest in peace!
I knew about him but didn't know about his co-star Hoffman also died fairly recently. My good friend also died of the same circumstances that same year so I probably didn't register it.
The movie was fine on its own, but that soundtrack really hit the spot. Part of me wishes there had been a mix of the Van Halen track “Humans Being” which included the score leading into the sequence when we first hear it. Not to mention, the instrumental that Eddie and Alex assembled for the closing credits, “Respect the Wind”, always sent chills up my spine.

This movie was the main event that got me interested in tornadoes as a kid. All other tornadoe movies like sharknadoe went downhill
I liked Dante's Peak a lot better than Volcano. I always enjoyed disaster films over the years, starting with Earthquake! and the Irwin Allen disaster films. The last good one was The Day After Tomorrow. After that, they started getting tiresome as we'd seen everything with top notch effects. Sure, 2012 had some incredible visuals, but the story was so bad and practically non-existent, and it was a chore to sit through. San Andreas, that movie about a satellite disrupting weather, and others since just no longer hold any interest...they all have a been there done that feel to them.

Just an interesting note about Crichton's wife, Anne-Marie Martin. She played detective Dori Doro an the tv series Sledge Hammer from '86-'88. It was a hilarious show about a nihilistic cop that talked to his gun. The show was kind of a spoof of Dirty harry,.

Here's another "Thing You Didn't Know" - the idea for the scene where a tornado demolishes a drive-in movie theater was taken from a real life event. In Southwestern Pennsylvania, there was a drive-In called Spotlight 88. On Friday, May 31, 1985 an F3 tornado (the Enhanced Fujita scale wasn't in effect yet) ripped through it and destroyed it. Nobody was there at the time, but many reporters morbidly predicted how bad it could have been if it had happened just a few hours later when the screens were open.
I live in Mt. Orab Ohio and when I was a very young kid about 4 years old we had a twister go thru our hometown drive in called The Lake drive in and destroyed the entire thing. The remnant were still there up until about 2 years ago when they finished demolishing it to build a really reception hall. As kids we used to sneak into the old drive in and spray paint the walls in the concession booth. Or we'd sneak back there and smoke cigs or have a make out session with our girls.
I lived through the tornado in 1985. I was 10. It destroyed a small town outside of Erie Pennsylvania called Albion, another small town called Hermitage and East Kane was wiped out. There is still a path in the Allegheny National Forest where the tornado cut through.
This is when I became obsessed with storms.

it was one of the first, yes. Also featuring FULLRATE DTS. Something that many DVDs later didn't have anymore. Some other early titles who had it were "Daylight", "Liar Liar" and "Dante's Peak".

So here's a small story. I remember watching the Drive in scene with my parents and asking what movie they were watching. They told me all about The Shining, and how scary it was. All I wanted to do was watch that next but i wasn't old enough I guess. But when I finally did, that began my interest in the horror genre! Thanks to Twister 😁
As for the prank bugs... Coat them with a very light coating of Vaseline to make them look a little more real.
When my wife & I got to see Twister we drove home through a massive North Texas thunderstorm. It was so bad that folks were pulling off the highway. I was going to pull off and go to a gas station except when I did... It was no longer there. A tornado ate it. Lake Dallas REALLY got hammered that night.
Twister was a very significant film & a classic must see from the 90s because it really depicted the damage & devastation Twisters cause to anyrjing that is in their way to a worldwide audience, for that reason alone it is a very important film. Much like Pierce Brosnan's Volcanic Eruption film around the same year or a year later called "Dante's Peak" where he plays a Volcanologist. Another significant film that opened the world's eyes to what can happen when a Super Volcanic eruption takes place, everything within miles is Obliterated.
This was the first movie I had seen in the theatre when I moved to USA...great content as always

This is insane! I was literally just talking about this movie and then this popped up in my notifications.
This movie was awesome! I am from Oklahoma and I remember film crews in Western and Northern Oklahoma asking for extras. One of my best friends was an extra in the film. The town of Wakita became a big tourist attraction after the twister blew it away. Another good reason for the movie to be set in Oklahoma is that the University of Oklahoma has the top meteorology school in the nation. When I was there in the mid to late 80's, I met people from other nations wanting to study meteorology. And as a journalism major, I got to do a story for our campus newspaper about storm or tornado chasers. I hung out with them for two spring weekends chasing storms (most storm chasers don't get that close to twisters). Thanks, Minty! Keep up the great work.

All Sharknado needed was a shark hunter with an Ahab-complex that could also instinctively read a sharknado's next move and who was in the middle of getting divorced to marry a therapist that had been helping him get over his Navy days' PTSD that revolved around a story about a shark that he saw, "miss this guy and miss that guy and come right after you (him!)"

to be fair dude, 1996 did have some strong competition that year when talking about sci-fi/action movies!!!
similar thing happened 10 years prior, where "Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home", "The Fly" and "Aliens" were nominated for Academy Awards in the Visual Effects/Make-Up/Sound Effects categories.
so with that said, while the visual effects for "Twister" are indeed excellent, but the use of both practical and computer effects for "Independence Day" rightfully deserved its Oscar win.
I really enjoyed the practical jokes kit review at the end. It reminds me of when I was just a lad and would always see ads for that kind of stuff in the back of comic books. Even at that young age I knew they weren't the amazing products the ads claimed they were. 😄

I was stationed with the Army in Oklahoma in 1995 . I remember seeing news that they were filming this movie while I was there. I actually got to see a tornado (twister) in the distance while we were out training on the back side of the Army Post.
Everytime I see the movie it reminds me of my time spent there.

This is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time. I completely enjoyed it. It made me want to go into meteorology in high school. Respect the wind by van halen in the ending credits was AMAZING.

Night of the Twisters is an adaptation of a kids book aimed at 8-13 year olds. The book was great when I read it and the movie was a faithful adaptation. I'm sure the success of Twister helped bring the movie version about.
Dusty's hand gestures in the 'food scene' was him signing the word "Food", letter by letter. Those three letters are similar in sign language (especially f and d but it takes very little movement to make an o from either letter). About a thousand people have pointed out the obvious in that they were hungry, but I think Minty's question in the video was more about what the hand gesture was and don't see where anyone else has answered, there you go.
Night of the twisters is a children’s book. I read it in the late 80s so it’s at least that old. Not a bad book considering I still remember parts of it
Growing up in the Midwest US, I remember reading the short story "Night of the Twisters" in grammar school. It was mandatory reading at our school.

De Bont's Godzilla film he was working on was actually more like the traditional Godzilla. He was going to fight another Monster. TriStar did not want anything to do with his version because of the intended the potential budget. So, He left the project to go and do other things.
