The best scene in the movie, to me, is when the men are drinking below deck, and the captain told the story of the Indianapolis, that whole scene should've won an Oscar.

Robert Shaw actually wrote that speech, or at least rewrote it because he didn’t like what he was expected to say. He also was a big drinker during the whole production, and was intoxicated when it came time for the filming. Everyone on set was dreading how he would do, but were pleasantly surprised when he did it one take.

I had the Jaws game. The object was to remove items from the shark's mouth without causing the mouth to snap shut. (Similar to "Operation" expect the Jaws shark used more of a traditional mouse-trap type of mechanism to shut the mouth if the player hit the wrong part of the mouth.) All that being explained, my brother and I rarely played the game the way we were supposed to; instead, we mostly used the shark to eat G.I. Joes and the like.

As you can see at 16:28, that CUT stuff looks pretty rough (almost resembling old home movie footage), so it would probably have to be polished up and even SCORED for any restored edition. There is also the sinister story of the possibility that a dark haired girl wearing jeans, white t-shirt with vertical green stripes and a blue bandana who walks into frame from the left, during the scene where the ferry has just docked in Amity for the 4th July (at 9;50 in your video) and looks towards the ferry may be the girl later found murdered July 26 1974 and who's identity is unknown but is referred to as 'the lady of the dunes'. It documents behind the scenes info, has pictures from the set, anecdotes about the cast, crew and effects, and even tales from the town affected by the filming. My favorite of these is a family of tourists on a ferry who saw one of the sharks being towed and thought it was real, and so lodged a complaint with their hotel that they misled the tourists into thinking the beaches were safe.

another movie that did subtlety well, (in my opinion) was the original "The Fog." You barely see the "monster/ghosts" in the fog, for the most part you just saw the fog, plus, also like "Jaws," the music was subtle and menacing, playing whenever the fog threat was present.

    • @chriswald7700
      @chriswald7700 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

So true. Today I always think that the budgets must be too high and the possibilities with CGI seem endless, that the filmmakers seem to feel obliged to show whatever creature or entity they are handling. Another example is "An American Werewolf in London". It did also show only show glimpses of the werewolf. But despite all the technical progresses since 1981 no other werewolf movie comes close to it.

@@Thurgosh_OG Yes I have and I like the film, but the werewolves look awful. Also just watched Ginger Snaps. Nice story but the beast is also the problem here. It seems to me that werewolf movies either have a small budget and the monster looks just cheap or the werewolf is obviously CGI. If you watch documentaries and interviews of "An American Werewolf in London" and they show the animatronics, even they look fake. But due to very good editing we are not aware of that in the movie. The same goes for "Bruce" in "Jaws" (the editor Vern Fields received an Oscar). Imho the werewolf in the "Wolfman" remake is the only exception but they should not have done the transformation with CGI. I find that movie very enjoyable, though it was critically penned and became one of the most expensive flops in film history. I also like "Wer" (2013) where the werewolf looks more like a huge, very hairy bloke. The werewolf here has no mask or prosthetics but they all did it with make up. Very minimalistic but it works for me. It's no classic beast though.

I told her how I managed to read the book and she couldn't remember why she won't let me but quite impressed by my stealth reading. Miss you mom !

I was just 13 years old in the summer of 75', when my parents threw me and my 3 younger siblings and our friends in the back of the family station wagon (no seat belts back then) and off to the drive-in we went. My parents stayed in the station wagon with my little sister and brother as the rest of us sat in lawn chairs between the speaker boxers in the dark. We cranked up all the speakers around us so we could hear the movie. Jaws scared the hell out of us. The next day we had swimming lessons at our local community indoor pool and that scared us to death. We all looked in the pool and made nervous jokes about Jaws being in the pool. The going gag later was to swim up on someone swimming and grab their leg. Lots of screaming but a great summer in 75'.

    Nice job, Minty!
My parents took me to the drive -in theater to see this, when I was five! From that moment on, I was convinced that Jaws lived under my bed. I grew up in Mystic, Connecticut, and have had the pleasure of visiting some of the filming locations, on nearby Martha's Vineyard. During the filming of Spielbergs movie, Amistad, (1997) I was able obtain a signature from Mr Spielberg, on a VHS copy of Jaws. When I presented it to him, he laughed and said, "We'll muzzle him." as he signed across the sharks nose. I really enjoyed your extensive collection of memorabilia, and the mention of Duel as a parallel. I'm not sure if it's a fact, but I understand that Spielberg used audio from Duel, truck going over the cliff, in the end of Jaws. Briefly as the sharks exploded carcass sinks to the bottom of the ocean. Something to maybe look into. Thank you for all of your contributions.

Great stuff! There is another lesser known fact about Jaws that I find particularly interesting - the fact that the head of Ben Gardner that pops out of the bottom of the boat was modelled on an actual fisherman in Martha's Vineyard called Craig Kingsbury who the cast and crew got to know while filming. This fisherman's personality was particularly eccentric and Robert Shaw wound up basing his portrayal of Quint on this guy, using some things Kingsbury said in real life as part of Quint's dialogue. So they wound up giving him a role in the movie, being seen briefly in a shot or two with other fishermen before his head pops out the bottom of the boat, providing the movie's best jump scare!
Was particularly cool to see what the head looks like now - any idea where it's kept?

It’s true, the head (or at least an exact replica) can be found at the horror makeup show at universal Orlando in the show waiting room, and shaw’s line “it’s not like going down to the pond and catching bluegills and tommycocks” was a direct quote from kingsbury

It is despicable what happened to Orca. Nice collection. I saw Jaws in London in 1976 when it was first released and it was amazing. I was 10 years old. The deleted footage apparently shocked test audiences. I think the main reason I saw it with my mates and a mum (to get us all in the A cert) was due to a UK comic called Action that you might want to research and collect - it featured a great story called Hook Jaw clearly based on Jaws. The comic was banned in late 75 and re-issued with heavy art work cuts. The shark was attacked with a fishing pole that lodged in its lower jaw like an arrow - hence the name. A great comic - it also featured Magnum Force and Death Race 2000 games in its pages in 1974 and 1975. You will definitely buy it after you see it.

I actually have a funny story about that jaws mask. I work halloween season every year at a party store chain and one year we had that jaws mask. since the thing is so huge this little kid tried putting it on and slides down, covering almost his entire body so you could just see his legs. so now we had this jaws mask with kid legs running around the store. it was one of the funniest things I've seen while working there.

I had the JAWS “game!” It was a hollow plastic shark that came with miniature pieces of fake junk you’d expect to find in a shark’s belly, like a fish skeleton, tire, anchor, etc. A rubber band was connected to the lower part of the shark’s open mouth and the junk was put into that, like how an alligator carries its newly-hatched babies. There was a little chopstick sized stick with a hook on the end, and each player had to use that try to remove a piece of junk. If the “jaws” clamped shut, you lost.
I also went on the Universal Studios tour in 1978 when it included getting “attacked” by the shark.

Peter Benchley regretted the success of the novel. The movie and novel created a perception of sharks as predators that ended up in a significant amount of sharks being killed. He spent years trying to educate the public about shark conservation.

Yeah it is bad that so many sharks were killed because of that but to be fair sharks are predators. They do indeed go around killing and eating prey. Although the prey is rarely humans they still go around killing things to eat.

If you watch JAWS backwards, It's a story about a Shark that survived an explosion, and swim around, spitting people out!!! LOOOOOL. Best closing remark EVER!
I love JAWS. I am 59 and saw Jaws waaaaaaaaaaaay back in the seventies. Not sure if it was actually in 1975, but close.
Now - I originally saw your "10 things you didn't know about DUEL",which I also love, then went on to this one... When I came to the movie poster on your wall, hanging besides the movie poster from Back to the Future" I just knew that I love you man.
Now onto 10 things about..... "Alien" and "Close Encounters"... SO many movies that I just love and watch over and over and....
Thank you for these amazing videos. I am hooked. Subs and likes are unavoidable.

Minty, this just might be your JAWS! This is easily the best work I think you've done in a while, and I hope you take that with the love it was written with. I was 8 or 9 years old when I saw JAWS back in 75. It literally scared me into not only nightmares for months, but I would be terrified in any water, even swimming pools and streams less than a foot deep. Great video 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Good work Minty, as you said Jaws is a Classic Blockbuster that's nearly 50yrs old so there's little we don't know about, but your research still came up with some gems.
You also seem to have had a good time making this video and sharing your merch

Whoever made Quint blame Captain McVay for the loss of the USS Indianapolis did every single one of the Indy's crew a disservice. To my knowledge, not one single survivor ever blamed McVay, nor did the Japanese submarine's captain.

Great explanation, Minty! I also loved Duel which I picked up a blu ray copy of last year when you did a video on it. (I remember it way back in the day) Here in Manitoba, Jaws has been played at Gimli beach where you sit in the water with the screen! Have not watch it there but I hear it is the only way to watch this shark movie! Nice collection of Jaws memorabilia Minty!
