  • Egyptair Trip Report flying from Cairo to Milan onboard one of the Egyptair Boeing 737 on a beautiful autumn day.
    A flight full of contrasts. I guess that's the best way I could describe my experience on this flight with Egyptair. On one hand, we have the onboard service, which is clearly above any European airline in Economy class. On the other hand, we have the status of the plane. It was just terrible. Worse than terrible.
    About the onboard service, I was surprised that they offered us a full meal service. Maybe because I got used to the ridiculous service on the European airlines... It was composed of several pieces of "dry" cucumber, chicken, or beef as the main, and a piece of chocolate cake as dessert. A piece of bread together with butter and cheese was also offered. There were 2 drinks offered water and mango juice. Later, they passed through the cabin offering coffee and tea.
    I decided to try the chicken option and, once you mixed everything, I must say it was pretty good. Lots of spices there made it really tasty. I was hungry, so I asked if I could get a second one. The crew say that of course, I could, so I had it. The cake was pretty good as well.
    About the route itself, we departed from Cairo in a northeasterly direction and quickly made a left turn after takeoff to start our route to Milan. From Cairo, we flew towards Alexandria, then entered the Mediterranean Sea and overflew several Greek Islands on our way to Athens. From there we fler over Greece, Albania, Croatia and, finally, Italy.
    Now comes the contrast to all these good things: the plane status.
    I think I didn't fly in a plane in such bad conditions in many years. I'm talking about all things not related to safety, of course. The windows were very scratched and dirty, the seats were sometimes broken, there were parts falling from the overhead compartments, and the surface of the wings was extremely dirty...
    On top of that, we flew with APU inoperative (Auxiliar Power Unit). It's a little turbine located on the tail that provides electricity and air-con to the plane on the ground. It's also necessary to start the engines. That gave us delay as we had to start one engine with an external machine, then do the pushback, and then start the remaining engine using compressed air from the one that was already running. In the Trip Report I will explain you the main implications of an inoperative APU.
    So, as you can see by this description and also on the Trip Report itself, it was a flight full of contrasts. Will I repeat with Egyptair? For sure yes. Their onboard service deserves another try, hopefully on an airplane in better conditions.
    Now it is your turn! Have you ever flown with Egyptair? Which route? Onboard which plane? Have you ever seen a cabin in such bad conditions as in this flight? Have you ever been in Cairo? Maybe in Milan? What do you think about the Egyptair onboard service?
    Lots of things to talk about! Read you in the comments!

      I have been on Egypt air many times. it's pot luck. You could be lucky and fly on their new planes Airbus A321 Neo or Boeing 787. Both of which are new and comfortable. or you could end up flying on old planes Boeing 737 or Boeing 777.
      So like I said pot luck and i had the pleasure of the old and new planes. Either way, I found the meal on board the Egyptian airline Yummy and they are very generous.

    My mother flew Misrair in 1947 to Lydda and 1950 to Nicosia. It's an old airline. They only started flying to Europe after buying SAIDE (Societe Aerienne Intercintinaux d'Egypte) in the early 1950s. My aunts flew them to Rome.

    Great video. I’ve flown on Egyptair a few times between Heathrow and Cairo, on their 777-300 and A320/321. I never saw passengers standing in the aisle before engine shut down, as in your video. My Egyptair flights, apart from two of them, were on time. Nice crews, clean cabins, and good inflight service.

    We have flown Egypt Air many times over the years and we can only say that they have improved so much from 2001 when we first flew to this past November, 2022. Polite cabin crew ; if you speak slowly in English they understand first time; food was hot and good; seats were a little close to each other but our flight was only 7 hrs 45 mins from Johannesburg to Cairo which was an amazing time schedule. Don't take one person's comments on an airline to disqualify it !

Thank you so much as I am a aviation and airplane lover since I was 5 years old. A question! Are you a pilot or are you an aeronautical engineer?

      Well, to be honest, what we've seen in this video are just minor things and none is safey related... the APU can be inoperative for a number of days before the plane has to be grounded.

      The window condition is not a safety issue at all, as an aviation enthusiast I definitely would like to see a clean window! But this plane fly a lot in sandy environment and that causes a lot of scratches, I myslef hate that my car window is scratched from the salt and sand that is used during the winter to make the roads safe. As a former airport worker, an operable APU is very common and does not cause any concerns what so ever, just the inconveniences for the pilot, ramp workers and the light delays for passengers.

      Tras más de 1.000 vuelos en m vida, puedo decir que a muchos restaurantes les gustaría tener la calidad de alguna comida que he tenido a bordo de algunas aerolíneas...

    Buen vídeo, pero no me esperaba un avión así de sucio y menos mal que lo compensan con la comida sino es para no volar mas con esa compañía que es evidente que deben mejorar muchos aspectos. No se que le pasaba a la APU pero deberían cambiar el avión hasta tenerlo operativo por otro. Un cordial saludo y buen finde.

    • @OnBoardHD
      @OnBoardHD  ปีที่แล้ว

      El APU, aunque tiene mucha utilidad, no es para nada indispensable a corto plazo en un avión. Puede estar hasta 120 días inoperativa y el avión seguir volando sin casi restricciones. Si bien, todas las aerolíneas arreglan el APU mucho antes de esos 120 días.

    Hola Lucas, gracias por tu vídeo. me dejó preocupado lo del APU, no sé, es normal que un avión de una aerolínea cualquiera vuele con un instrumento inoperante, aunque pueda ser reemplazado en tierra por otro??? eso se acepta en todas partes o hay aerolíneas que son intransigente en el 100% de la operabilidad del avión??? Bueno aquí se ve que claramente se puede realizar el vuelo sin complicaciones, pero no me imaginaba que eso pudiese suceder. Un abrazo desde Santiago de Chile, América

    • @OnBoardHD
      @OnBoardHD  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Es algo normal, no habitual, pero si algo normal.
      Todo avión tiene una lista de con todos los componentes que tiene (llamada MEL) en la que se informa de qué y cuántos elementos pueden estar inoperativos y por cuánto tiempo pueden estarlo antes de que ese avión no pueda volar más.
      El APU, dentro de que como hemos visto en el vídeo, tiene bastante importancia, no es realmente esencial para la operativa del avión. El período máximo que un avión puede estar sin APU suele ser 120 días. Si bien, las aerolíneas lo suelen arreglar mucho antes que eso.

    Well… happy to see you had a good experience on Egyptair. I flew with them half a dozen times in 2022 work-related. And 5 out of 6 were really bad, especially in regards of crew service. On 2 flights the passengers even brought back their meal trays by themselves, because the crew just did not collected them over 2 hours after the meal service. Privately I will definitely not use them. But good that you had this rare good experience. Keep up the great trip reports! Greetings!

    I never got over the shock of the findings of the investigation after the crash of Egypt Air flight 804 in 2016. It was downed by a fire in the cockpit with the loss of all board. Not only had the captain been smoking and caused a fire with his cigarette, but Egypt Air allowed its pilots to smoke and even provided an ashtray in the cockpit. They have obviously changed this now but in my opinion Egypt Air should have been banned from the airways and nobody working for the running of the company should have been allowed near the industry again in any form.

    Seguramente el avión debe estar operando en rutas dentro de África donde las personas no soy muy dadas a cuidar lo ajeno, y donde la seguridad no es muy demandada, se compensó con el servicio de alimentos (muy superior a qué ofrecen las aerolíneas del continente europeo y americano) en rutas de misma duración. La compañia se puede decir que es de las mejorcitas en el continente africano, lejos del Ethiopian Airlines (que es la mejor del continente) tal vez a la par de la de Sudáfrica.
