  • Kemper revisits the Nikon 100-400 in the mountains of Colorado, and while he may not have changed his mind about everything about the lens, the results speak for themselves.

    What collar do you have on your 100-400 that allows it to mount arca-swiss tripod?

    You didn't mention it but I'm sure you took into consideration atmospheric distortion at distance. Mirage is always a problem at distance if there is enough light make an image. Mirage is present even on the coldest days. It offsets the appearance of the image from where the image actually is located and it will be offset in the direction of the wind drift. Even in the driest climates there is mirage. In high humidity there is more mirage and more loss of sharpness. You might want to reconsider the validity of your lens tests. I have an 80-400 that I used to think wasn't sharp enough. When I started using a 500mm f/4 Nikon lens I loved the image quality on migrating warblers. Then I had occasion to start using the 80-400 again on back yard birds and learned to use the 80-400 within its limitations. Now it accounts for about 80% of my bird images and sales and it is amazingly sharp at 400mm f/5.6. I'm very glad I learned to use it correctly. BTW, most of my bird pictures are shot at about 12 to 15 feet now.

      The thing is that atmospheric distortion is an external factor that technically effects any lens. I do think my testing is valid because I am testing them by using them in the field for the photography I want to create. I’m going to evaluate a lens based on final results more than any other factor. Some days the atmospheric distortion is worse than others but I also know some lenses handle it better than others based on the images I have created with them.

    Do they do an equivalent to the f mount 200-400mm f4 in Z mount?

      They do not as of yet. The one I used was f-mount. It works fantastic over all, even if the adapter itself is kinda annoying

      @summitbid hello thanks for reply
      Does adapter work with wide angle lenses ?
      Do you know why the f mount needed changing in first place

    Do you prefer this 100-400 to the new 180-600?
    What ball head do you use?
    Do you sell your photos online to the public ?

    I have the Z 400 mm f/4.5 VR S lens mainly for wildlife. It is an absolutely amazing lens. I just ordered the Z 100-400 mm f/4.5-56 S lens today for versatility. I hope I don't receive a lemon from Nikon. Fingers crossed.

    Gray market bad copy thing is just bullshit. I am coming from industrial distribution market of a reputable imaging producer and all the products would be the same.
