How is it I've been listening to jazz music devoutly for over 40 years and i never heard of this wonderful singer until just now ???? He's also an excellent instructor.
I wish every jam night had a band like that....and a saxophonist and a guitarist that stay quiet whilst you sing, the first time I've ever seen that!!! :)
Haha, so true. Why is it so? Sax players seem to think they need to fill in the spaces with a vocalist while the piano, guitar, bass and drums are already doing all the filling in. Sometimes just holding your horn and allowing the other players to do their thing is the best thing we horn players can do in the moment. I jam with two sax players who probably never didn't play a head. It might be too late to break the news to them that the piano player and guitarist wouldn't mind playing the head without them once in a while.
Greg Lamatrice I’m so with you, Brother! I’m 45 and just checked him out today. I’m transitioning from being a Metal Vocalist to a Jazz Singer. He’s an awesome voice and Coach. 🤘🏿✊🏿👊🏿💯
@@MarionCowings No, thank you! I just wrote a song titled 'Let It Rain' and posted a video of me singing on my channel. I would love your feedback on it! Thank again for your awesome coaching.
I've such respect for this man. I took just a few classes w Marion back in the 1980's and he instilled in me such confidence to be a vocalist, a vocal performer. What a gift he gave me. Thank you, Marion Thinking of you warms my heart.
Mr. Cowings sung his vocal solo in his own lyrics which delivers an atmosphere of the street in the Swing Era. What a storytelling skill he has ! PLS check his 'Freddie Freeloader' too. Such a fun !
Marion Cowings has been an American musical treasure for half a century. Incredibly, he continues to improve with age. Man, that's a lot of rich experience in that voice. So just lay back and dig the treat..................
So awesome Jazz singer from Kansas City I did a jazz set this past weekend dealing only with the classics and had no rehearsal but was able to apply some of this very knowledge thankyou i will post a snippet of that show for you to see.
You are an incredible musician and wonderful person to have this up on the TH-cam. I came across your name from the smalls jazz club My nephew mike migliore was playing there today with a jazz band, and sent us a link to watch it ,and I saw your name .You are doing a great service to help singers and music in general. I can tell you have a wealth of experience thank you for sharing this and letting people know. Keep up the great work. ROBERT
May as well list them here so. Going by the other Jazz Academy videos, it's Todd Williams on saxophone, Eli Yamin on piano, Alvin Atkinson on drums, Tom Dempsey on guitar and Noriko Ueda on bass.

I saw Emily King's IG post today and thought, "I bet she look just like her daddy." So I look up who her dad is and discover Marion who I'd never heard of until right now...and like, as a jazz fan, how have I never heard of this guy?
I enjoyed the heck out of this. My only question is how did the band know to play the "Ornithology" head. Do both tunes share the same set of chord changes?
@@hotice8885 Many years ago I took a couple of lessons with a guy who said that one of those Yardbird melodies was written over the changes to "There Will Never Be Another You". That was over thirty years ago and I still haven't figured out which tune he was talking about. Do you, by any chance, know which Charlie Parker recording is based on the chord progression of "Another You"?
0:50 I have a lot of respect for Marion Cowings, but this is not how it's done. He says the song and key all at the same time without really waiting for confirmation from the other musicians. Confirm the song, then the key. Repeat until people agree.
There is nothing at all that has anything to do with leading a band in this segment!...SINGERS, should know there keys, and musicians should know it...regardless (Fake book or not.....transpose if need be)….Band leaders and sidemen need to know this is not the real deal...…..kind of lame!
The drummer might be the happiest man I've ever seen.

This has been up for two years and I missed it? Marion Cowings is a national treasure! Spread the word.

You are one cool dude Marion. This is perfection itself. Masterful and thank you for sharing so much of yourself.
Thank you, Mr. Cowings for sharing these great & critical combo techniques. Mastery. What an inspiration.
18 years and im glad to know this magnificent singer

I was about to ask about the three fingers counting down, but I found this reply. This is a huge help, thank you!
Thank you Marion! What does one measure upfront mean though? I can't find it anywhere on Google.
@@katewrightsings It means how many bars you're counting before the music starts. As he says, one for slower tempos and 2 for faster ones.
@@tonimena1121 ohhhhh gotcha. Thank you for that really appreciate it!

great singer . me too just now discovered him
I don't know if this will be answered. I would love an explanation of one up front and two up front. Thank you. Very informative video for me.
Great stuff, very useful, many thanks. Loved the hitch hiking, never seen that before.
Same, here. I'm going to "surprise" my Berklee-trained bassist, who taught me a few hand cues when I started with him, but not this one.

Nice job keeping your eyes open. :)
I enjoyed the heck out of this. My only question is how did the band know to play the "Ornithology" head. Do both tunes share the same set of chord changes?
That is exactly right: Charlie Parker wrote most of his melodies over the chord changes to some of the favorite tunes of the era.

@@PhilipQuintas, I believe the song is called: “Not You Again.” I’ve found a John Scofield version on TH-cam, but not a Parker version.

What does tagging mean ? You mentioned IT with the '3 fingers'? Thank U so much :)

Yes, Emily King.
There got to be fusion bands that one of the members be the vocalist.
THANK YOU! with Love
I love it that the bass player didn’t stop the band for being sexist when singer used the term “chick”.
What do you mean by "two up front"?
2 bar count off
what about if you are a great singer , phenomenal ear, and can’t read or understand music ? i only feel music can’t understand
need those ornithology lyrics
Thank you ...Marion
