    What were you straining out of the lye water solution? If that was big chunks of lye ... how do you know what's the lye/water concentration???

      Great Question! It's sodium carbonate. (Same thing that soda ash is made of). I leave my lye water in a safe spot with an open top to cool and the top of the lye solution is reacting with the carbon dioxide in the air. It's harmless! I personally don't like the look of it so I strain it.
      This reaction is also commonly referred to as "Lye lint"
