Interesting how they symbolically sit on opposite sides of the coffee table, but Mandela strategically moves closer as he realizes that Peinaar is the man he hoped he would be. Looks him in the eye and tells him why the task before him is so profoundly important. Just a wonderfully well-acted scene.

This poem saved my life and gave me strength during my battle with cancer. I said it everyday. What a beautiful poem.

@@brettmeadway43 it’s literally invictus. The title of the movie lol. Why would I say that if I didn’t know what poem it was??

This is by far one of the most impacting scenes in the whole movie. Not only Mandela inspired a reconciliation atmosphere, but also asking François to lead the Rugby team to something great... a turning point in the history of South Africa as a nation.

Mandela says the light hurts his eyes, then calls Mrs. Briss a shining light in his day. Then he rejects her requests to pour his tea. Interesting.

It is his humbleness and appreciating Mrs. Briss who is a tea lady in offices. Shining light of the day is simply a compliment!

Actually he takes the time to introduce Pienaar to her out of respect...I believe he wants to pour the tea as a means to further bond with him.

The "light hurts my eyes" comment dates back to his time in a dark prison cell, where light was often scarce.....he compliments Mrs. Briss as he shows that he treats everyone with equal importance....introduces her to Peinaar with respect. Mandela could just command a room with humility, no small task.
