    Recently we looked at the Death of Knowledge within the Imperium, and while its true that generally mankind has been stuck in a state of unending stagnation for millennia the cogs of the Mechanicus slowly are turning and we see a resurgence in some tech that was assumed no longer able to be produced. This raises some exciting possibilities and more importantly leaves us asking why and what other pieces of Archeotech are the Cogface boys keeping locked up in their underground vaults on Mars. Could it lead to a confrontation with the return of Roboute Guilliman when the Imperium faces its darkest days for Millennia.

      I think its largely to them going well we make weapon x y z not volkite and change for the Mechanicus is bad. Lord Guilliman did have to go around slapping a few heads around to get them back into doing other stuff. With thousands of forge worlds, someone had to have had the blueprints laying around.

    The Martian death ray. In M2 Mars was inhabited by octopus-like xenos that have invaded Terra once. Since then they disappeared for unknown reasons, leaving their heat-rays and tripod walkers to the humans that colonised Mars. As time passed, the bulky heat ray evolved into smaller hand weapons, while the tripod walkers eventually became the proto-titans of early DAoT.

    Characteristically weak, thematically awsome.
    They missed a beat with the hellblasters, they should've equipped them with volkite rifles instead, to make them differ a bit more than just being 'those plasma guys'.

    • @____________838
      @____________838 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Especially since the Hellblasters can only use plasma. If they had Melta and Flamer options, it’d be different.

    • @SoulSoundMuisc
      @SoulSoundMuisc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Sad thing is, Hellblasters are touted as the new "heavy hitters", yet the only way they're going to burn down an enemy tank the way a Devestator Squad with Lascannons could is with a full squad of ten with the heavy version of their weapon (a unit that is prohibitively expensive) on overcharge.
      A five man Devestator Squad with 4 Lascannons doe the job better, with an extra shot (cherub) and a reroll (Signum) and not suffer casualties from shooting for fewer points.
      Hellblasters are ... disappointing. I field them, but only to vape medium to heavy infantry or light armor, in five man squads (due to their bloated point cost). GW dropped the ball on them pretty badly.

    • @____________838
      @____________838 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was thinking if them more as a “special weapons” squad than a “heavy weapons” squad. But I could totally see that same base model fitting each description, as long as they had the weapons choices.
      For a line that’s supposedly going to replace basic Astartes someday, Primaris are rather limited.

    • @toade1583
      @toade1583 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hell blasters are just much stronger lasguns. They're still anti personnel and they're much better at it than Volkite weapons which have a much smaller range. If you need anti-armour, melta guns will do the same or better job while being easier to make than Volkite.

    Being as boltr ammunition is explosive, its damage isn't that its explosive, its that its specifically expansive.
    You might say thats the same thing but the distinction being that an explosion on the surface of something the bullet couldn't pit or penetrate is unlikely to do any damage the projectile on its own didn't.
    However if it penetrates to any degree the explosive payload is now a contained explosive in that hole or dent etc and much like a firecracker in a closed hand rather than an open palm, significantly increased damage.

    I think you needed to see them more like Phasers, as seen in Star Trek, as this a beam weapon. Trying to compare it to a melta and flamer doesn't quite do this weapon justice. If a Volkite beam hits a normal trooper, they flash disintegrate, creating a powerful bloom of heat that can also hurt nearby troops, or simply sets everything around them on fire. If one hits an armoured target, like a Space Marine or bigger, it dumps a huge amount of energy into that location, melting the armour, and essentially turning them into a mobile heat source. Assuming the target survives, they will continue to carry this massive burning heat with them. Quite the death-ray! It comes as no surprise how the Imperium was able to dominate the galaxy, if they were all armed with such terrifying weaponry.

  • @namjartaevh1957
    @namjartaevh1957 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    just a correction, a focused energy weapon would refer to las guns, melta guns as well but not flamers. focused energy weapon is basically a catch all for laser weapons. my understanding reading the heresy lore around volkites is that they are laser weapons like a las weapon but much more closely related to the age of technology weapon they were based on and the las gun was a replacement for the volkite as supplies dwindled

    • @Luetin09

    My take on melta vs volkite is that the melta is more like a short-range infrared gun, somewhat akin to its "shotgun" playstyle in SM2, though not shooting shells, instead requiring the user to hold the relatively narrow heat beam in one spot for a short period to melt through and inflict damage, and the volkite shoots more of a classic "ray"/"beam" with each trigger pull or possibly as long as the trigger is held down, and it being something like a hotshot lasgun mixed with ion weaponry; the superheated beam isn't just laser light, its more like aiming the business end of a rocket at your enemies and vaporizing them like a candle in a blowtorch.

  • @andrewwaldschmitt4757
    @andrewwaldschmitt4757 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Volkite weapons are ideal for engaging Tyranid forces. You can force the Hive to redeploy with lighter armor and a focus on mobility, only to whip out artillery or other explosive ordnance. If they switch to thicker armor, you bring out meltaguns. They should definitely not be the primary weapon of an entire force, the same way that you would not field a few dozen men with just shotguns. A mixed arms approach is how I see these being used for best results.

    Here's a theory, if flamers are conduction weapons, with the burning fuel conducting the heat directly into the target, and Melta's are radiated weapons, presumably using microwaves to radiate the heat onto the the target, then perhaps Volkite type weapons are convection weapons, using some type of control field to limit the direction in which the excited atoms containing the thermal energy can move, forcing them directly onto their target (instead of them moving upwards, which is the traditional direction in which thermally excited atoms move.) Never seen any lore confirming this but it would explain why the three weapon types are considerably different technologies.

    • @matthewquan9083
      @matthewquan9083 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'd probably want to mix them in with heavy weapons teams. Volkite has medium range, high damage, okay armor penetration, and high cost. I think Lasguns might outrange Volkite weaponry depending on the respective scale and calibration. Maybe mount them on Chimeras replacing the multilaser? Cost would be the major issue, and potentially maintenance. It could be most regiments can't maintain them so it wouldn't work well in that case.
      The way I see it:
      Stubbers and Autoguns: Basically modern firearms but rendered in the 40k style
      Logistics: Poor (Needs actual bullets in the correct calibers)
      Range: Medium+
      Damage: Low? (Compared to other stuff, still deadly to people)
      Reliability: Moderate (not many complex moving parts, but can still jam)
      Anti Armor: Poor
      Lasgun: Somehow turns a laser into a more bullet like form.
      Logistics: Excellent (rechargable power packs that only degrade slightly. Likely to outlive wielder)
      Range: Medium+
      Damage: Low?
      Reliability: Excellent (You need to clean it and oil it to prevent rust. That's about it.)
      Anti Armor: Moderate
      Plasma Gun: A device that tries to kickstart a fusion reaction before firing it at the enemy
      Logistics: Poor (Hard to maintain, requires refined hydrogen)
      Range: Medium (The blasts do tend to lose heat)
      Damage: Moderate+
      Reliability: Awful (literally explodes in user's face)
      Anti Armor: Good
      Melta: Similar to plasma but uses a chemical charge instead of a nuclear reaction to generate a superheated blast.
      Logistics: Moderate (uses chemical based charge instead of more complex fusion, better understood)
      Range: Short (Superheated jet dissipates quickly)
      Damage: High
      Reliability: Moderate (Few moving parts, better understood than plasma)
      Anti Armor: High
      Bolter: It's a gun that is also a rocket launcher. Suitably extreme
      Logistics: Difficult (Ammo is bulky and more complex to manufacture than bullets)
      Range: Long (it's a rocket propelled projectile)
      Damage: Moderate+ (Less than disintegration, but still brutal)
      Reliability: Moderate+ (More complex than an autoweapon, but way stricter standards in manufacture)
      Anti-Armor: Moderate, high with specialty ammo
      Space Marines have their Battle Barges to fabricate new Bolter rounds and they need the extreme lethality so Bolters suit them. The Astra Militarum have limited supplies, and vast numbers so the more reliable Lasgun makes sense, especially given that they don't have all that many skilled engineers and technicians.
      The primary roles of the Astra Militarum are
      Garrison duty/putting down revolts
      Defending a planet in the likely vain hope of reinforcements
      Marching to their death to stay the advance of terrible alien power
      Volkite weaponry would be overkill in the first case, prohibitively expensive in the second case, and utterly wasted in the third. Volkite is like Tactical Dreadnaught armor. It's far too powerful to ignore completely, but also too expensive and rare to be used often. If it was easily scaled to pistol size, I could see it becoming an officer's weapon, like how Commisars use Bolt Pistols. Otherwise, it would probably be used by one elite force or another. In the case of Astra Militarum, most likely the Tempestus Scions. Those are basically fanatics raised in the same boarding schools as commisars and such.
