Received Pronunciation (RP) has a long history dating back to the 16th century. It originated as the standard accent of the English court and aristocracy, and was influenced by the language spoken in the southeastern counties of England, particularly in the areas around London and Oxford.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, RP became the accepted standard for English pronunciation, and was adopted by the upper classes and educated elites. It was also used as the model for teaching English pronunciation in schools and language schools.
In the 20th century, RP became more widely accepted as the standard accent for British English, and was used by the BBC and other media outlets as the default accent for news broadcasts and other programs.
Today, RP remains an influential and widely recognized accent, although its use has declined somewhat in recent years due to the increasing diversity of British English accents and the growing acceptance of regional accents. Nevertheless, RP remains an important part of British language and culture, and continues to be studied and emulated by language learners around the world.

This was so epic. Definitely! I fancy the Classic RP.
Notwithstanding the RP accents, I admire them all.
These accents sound posh and nice, albeit difficult.
That is why the Classic RP and Modern RP are epic.
Both of you could impersonate the two RP accents.

  • @rimaaouadi9092

Actually the received prounounciation is very different from the posh accent
RP is the basic accent, when someone is speaking in RP you should bot be able to recognize where they are from nor their social class, it's mostly associated with educated people rather than rich people
While when someone has a posh accent you can tell where they're from *they can speak northen posh for example* and it's much less clear and understandable in comparison with the RP
The queen speaks a posh RP while some of the royal family speak pure RP or pure Posh
A noticeable difference between the two is the R sound, when their is a vowel before the R like in the word *Mirror* in RP it's prounounced similar to the American R but in the Posh accent it's prounounced like the Spanish/arabic R
Also when speaking RP your mouth should be open and your words should sound very clear however in Posh accent your jaw should be lazy and a lot of the sounds are turned to a /ə/ even when it shouldn't be
I hope that cleared it a bit

To sound proper posh, you need to have a slight lisp, a nasal bark, or mumble.
And that's just the royal family...😘
      (Prince Charles.
      Camilla Barker Parker.
      And The Queen).

Actually, I believe that pronunciation is important but efficacy of communication is by far more relevant. It should be the top to be competent in both areas but, maybe, it implies you're a native speaker or a person with dual citizenship. Anyway , I really adore posh pronunciation although it's better modern RP for casual but polite conversation.🇮🇹✌️🇬🇧

Ma'am, here is some phrasal verbs in the sentences (as;. He pulled them away with force. He watched over his sheep every day. They saw only the shepherd boy doubled up with laughter. She was also beaten up by brother while doing so. Kadam took away all the working children from there. The shepherd boy was bored with his work. The tiger got up and quietly walked away. In the portrait, the majestic and handsome king seemed to have come alive within the frame.) What's the meaning of all the phrasal verbs which have been used in above sentences? e.g. Pull away? Watch over? Double up? Beat up? Take away? Bore with? Walk away? To have come alive? Please mam reply my question.

I've been learning British English for three now! I've been told I've got a strong English accent. American people always ask me if I've lived in the UK before or if I'm a Brit haha. And English people always say that I sound quite posh, like a royal family member. And it makes feel so proud of my accent but.. I don't know why I've got this particular accent, when all I wanted was just to sound like a normal person in England haha. I mean not " too posh". So my question is, would English people find weird/odd if they hear a non native with this accent?

The Ultra RP seems a little bit contrived these days. Unfortunately, that was the English I learnt in Norway in the 1980s. I still remember being on a school trip to Newcastle, taking the boat from Bergen. In a restaurant, I wanted to ask for a glass of water. In my best English, I posed the question. To my dismay, the answer was: Yes, but there is no need to be so snotty about it (given in proper Geordie). I remember being absolutely flabbergasted, what had I done wrong? Today, it is not difficult to see why the answer was as it was.

Halo! Feedback for your impersonations: your pronunciation of words was excellent, the rising& falling intonation was also perfect👌😊 . One thing though, you changed your voices, that made you sound a bit funny😊

Hi Luis thanks so much as always. Yes they do take the mickey out of the queen and the aristocracy in general. The classic RP accent is joked about a lot but modern rp is quite standard. How is life for you Luis?

Quite a nice presentation. And your voices are quite nice. One little thing: "diphthong" is pronounced DIF-THONG, not DIP-THONG.

    I have a question!👆🏻
Make as if I'm having a conversation with someone and he/she uses a new vocabulary, is there a way to understand it if ever I don't have Thesaurus?👀🧐

    • @jcr1138
      @jcr1138 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You can get the idea from the context. You can also ask them to describe or use synonyms of the word you didn't understand.

    Boris Johnson RP?
Don't think so. The oaf demonstrates a southeast register. He might affect the occasional royal family sound but he comes complete with glottal stops and over-aspirated long vowels. I don't believe there is any such thing as "modern" RP. It is just an invention by those who think they don't effuse a local accent. According to Google, the voice for "cure" is still /kjʊə/ . If people want to drop it, it's up to them, but unless you've had a life mired in such a background, the chances are that even when you try to give something a pure RP sound, little things betray the counterfeit elements, such as breathing technique and intonation.
