Camped up there last April with my brother. Got caught in a huge downpour halfway up CMD - pitched the tent in a storm, then it cleared and we were skipping about the summit ridge in our underwear, beers in hand. Lol Next morning we lugged all our camping gear across the arete. Amazing trip. Amazing place! Will go up ledge route next time - minus the camping gear, then down the arete. Love your adventures Murray. Always inspiring and your videos are one of the main reasons I got into mountaineering (true story)

Watching your video brought back mixed emotions about my last venture along the ridge. A glorious August day started in Glen Nevis, up the Tourist Route then cut across to Corrie Leis where I met a fellow walker from Montrose. We decided to keep each others company up to the CMD summit then along the arete. Tragically the gentleman lost his footing about half way along the ridge and tumbled slowly backwards off the steep edge of the ridge before disappearing from view into the corrie below. He eventually came to rest, motionless, on a small outcrop some way below the ridge but did not look in good shape through binoculars. Using whistles myself & fellow walkers raised the alarm whilst 2 experienced climbers managed to scramble down to the casualty with the aid of safety ropes. The rescue helicopter arrived and the crew managed to move the chap to a shallower part of the corrie where they were eventually able to airlift him to Fort William. All I can say is that it was an extremely shocking incident to witness and I was quite unsure about what to do next. After some soul searching I decided to complete the route to the summit of the Ben out of respect for the gentleman, before continuing back down the tourist route to Glen Nevis and staying overnight with friends in Glencoe. Fortunately the chap survived and was eventually transferred to hospital in Glasgow for specialist care before being discharged a couple of months later, although I was sad to hear from his mother who contacted me to say that his head injuries had been life changing and that he would not be able to continue his professional career. Life is cruel and can change in an instant, even when enjoying the tranquil beauty of Scotland's mountains. I no longer have the name or contact details of the unlucky man who I walked with that day ... but I wish him well and hope that he has some memory of those glorious views, however faint.
A terrible thing to witness and be involved in and just shows you that you don't know whats round the corner and to live every day to the full. Full respect to you all for the rescue and the MRT and helicopter teams.
Wonderful.I so enjoy your climbs and scrambles. I must admit I think I might baulk at the top edge walk, but I love your drone views which put the dangers and the excitement of the walk into context. Once again thank you. Every time i have ascended that Ben it has rained lol.
That hour or so between first light and sunrise really is the best time to be up high on the mountains, and what a place to be for it, stunning :-) Great film as always. One of these days I'm going to have to try making one, if only to appreciate the extra effort required to place and retrieve the camera for all those walking off into the distance shots :-)
That looked great and if I ever walk up it again that's the route I'm doing. Just hope that one day the weather is as good as you had then. I seem to be a magnet for cloud whenever I get near Fort William.

Awesome, I'd love to have the fitness and head for heights to do that, thanks to you I can experience a bit of it. I have been up the Ben several times always a struggle and always by the tourists track. Maybe one day I'll get to view the North face from Carn Mor Dearg. Stunning! Planning to hike B. Nevis via CMD arete, and trying to find the best place to wildcamp. I’m looking to start from Glen Nevis visitor centre then come off the tourist track towards the lake to the CIC hut then hike up to the ridge...would appreciate any advise. Cheers, Mari
Funsized Earthling hi Mari - my advise would be keep an eye on the weather - I planned the trip in the vlog around very unusually calm summer conditions (summer of 2018 was amazing) as the conditions up high on the Ben can be deadly . If you get good conditions there aren’t too many places to pitch when up on the tops (I barely found enough space in this video !). However if you are coming up via Glen Nevis - there are lots of good spots to camp at the half way Lochan 👍 Hope the weather gods smile for your trip and you have an ace time 🙏 thanks Murray

Excellent stuff Murray. Got me thinking about doing the same this winter if conditions allow. No problems with water supply or finding a spot for the tent. And from your earlier vlog the CMD arete looks amazing plastered in ice and snow. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi Robert - don't have one on the Ring of Steall (yet) did the 8 Munros on a long, long summers day years and years ago !! However I have been looking at the Mamores more loosely recently and may head back up here at some point for a camp :) Try out Walk with Wallace page as I've just watched his excellent wild camping adventure around the ring of steal from last weekend - well worth a watch ATB Murray
I did the Ben in May this year via the tourist route, broke the work up by wild camping at the lochan halfway up. I got lucky because the Ben was shrouded in cloud the evening before, but then cleared up during the night so when I woke up I basically jumped out of my tent 😄, had a quick cup of coffee and headed up, the views were incredible! The Ben was part of my first longer wild camping trip and the first in Scotland (the Mamores in particular) so I opted for the tourist route as a safer option. Hopefully I shall return to this part of Scotland at some stage and do the Ben via the CMD arete because it's a beautiful and intriguing looking scramble. Thanks for sharing 😊 and happy New Year with lots and lots of happy hikes and camps 😊👍

Hi Paul, it all depends on the conditions when you do it (icy, snowy, windy , dry, wet etc etc) and also on the experience of those who are doing it ie fitness, head for heights etc etc In my experience it is one of the easier scrambles out there but if in doubt there are loads of mountain guides based in the area who can be hired to take people across ... Hi Mason - best to check nearer time - I have climbed some of gullies on the Ben in May ! However - the Killie hood of snow on the Arete may be low (but not impossible ) - high winds maybe more of an issue ! Hope you get nice calm sunny weather tho 🤞

Incredible video. The views were magnificent, I can't believe how lucky you were to get such great weather conditions like you did. This route is on my list for next year, hopefully I'll be as lucky as you with the weather.

Awesome, I'd love to have the fitness and head for heights to do that, thanks to you I can experience a bit of it. I have been up the Ben several times always a struggle and always by the tourists track. Maybe one day I'll get to view the North face from Carn Mor Dearg. Stunning! Planning to hike B. Nevis via CMD arete, and trying to find the best place to wildcamp. I’m looking to start from Glen Nevis visitor centre then come off the tourist track towards the lake to the CIC hut then hike up to the ridge...would appreciate any advise. Cheers, Mari
Funsized Earthling hi Mari - my advise would be keep an eye on the weather - I planned the trip in the vlog around very unusually calm summer conditions (summer of 2018 was amazing) as the conditions up high on the Ben can be deadly . If you get good conditions there aren’t too many places to pitch when up on the tops (I barely found enough space in this video !).
However if you are coming up via Glen Nevis - there are lots of good spots to camp at the half way Lochan 👍

Excellent stuff Murray. Got me thinking about doing the same this winter if conditions allow. No problems with water supply or finding a spot for the tent. And from your earlier vlog the CMD arete looks amazing plastered in ice and snow. Thanks for the inspiration!
Its certainly worth doing in the winter if conditions allow , probably easier too as all the rocks are filled in and covered with snow ;)

What a wonderful walk to end the year Murray :D The weather was just fab and gosh it was so peaceful up there !! A rare sight indeed :D I have been up the Ben a couple of times but I am not so skilled or brave as yourself We did it via the main path from Glen Nevis :D
That view from your tent was great and you captured some nice snaps of the early morning light on The Ben :D

Hi Robert - don't have one on the Ring of Steall (yet) did the 8 Munros on a long, long summers day years and years ago !! However I have been looking at the Mamores more loosely recently and may head back up here at some point for a camp :)
Try out Walk with Wallace page as I've just watched his excellent wild camping adventure around the ring of steal from last weekend - well worth a watch

I did the Ben in May this year via the tourist route, broke the work up by wild camping at the lochan halfway up. I got lucky because the Ben was shrouded in cloud the evening before, but then cleared up during the night so when I woke up I basically jumped out of my tent 😄, had a quick cup of coffee and headed up, the views were incredible! The Ben was part of my first longer wild camping trip and the first in Scotland (the Mamores in particular) so I opted for the tourist route as a safer option. Hopefully I shall return to this part of Scotland at some stage and do the Ben via the CMD arete because it's a beautiful and intriguing looking scramble. Thanks for sharing 😊 and happy New Year with lots and lots of happy hikes and camps 😊👍

Hi Paul, it all depends on the conditions when you do it (icy, snowy, windy , dry, wet etc etc) and also on the experience of those who are doing it ie fitness, head for heights etc etc In my experience it is one of the easier scrambles out there but if in doubt there are loads of mountain guides based in the area who can be hired to take people across ...

do you carry your drone in your rucksack?
Hey Murray. Conditions are variable for sure not matter what time of year. We're coming from Canada and have the CMD planned for the 4th week of May. Thoughts on conditions on the arete historically during this time?
Hi Mason - best to check nearer time - I have climbed some of gullies on the Ben in May ! However - the Killie hood of snow on the Arete may be low (but not impossible ) - high winds maybe more of an issue ! Hope you get nice calm sunny weather tho 🤞

I know this video is quite old now - but I noticed it's posted in late December but the conditions look more like early autumn? Just wanted to ask what time of year the trip took place
George Maier Hi George - it was early June during the heatwave of 2018 - I didn’t put it on the channel until December as I was asked to show a video at a mountain film festival so wanted to wait until the festival had taken place before putting it on - it was a great trip and the weather was perfect - not tooo often you get these conditions near the Ben Nevis at that altitude:)
