Ben Nevis Bivvy via CMD Arête - July 2019

- Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles. Standing at 1,345 metres above sea level, it is at the western end of the Grampian Mountains in the Lochaber area of the Scottish Highlands, close to the town of Fort William.
Ben Nevis via the CMD Arête is arguably the most enjoyable non-climber’s route on Ben Nevis and to bivvy on the summit plateau, away from the crowds, was an all-round pretty awesome adventure.

Wow! What a place to bivvy with some great kit!
It really was Richard. We need to head back for another one soon! 😊🙌
I once spent the night in the summit shelter (Sept 1976). It makes the summit experience more real. Thank you for this. I would rather do what you have done, than spend a week in Lanzarote. I am sure you know that the shelter is on top of the ruins of the Observatory Hotel which closed in 1914. It was run by two sisters who charged a shilling a night to stay there. The hotel was provided by pack ponies, and hence the pony track up the west side of the mountain. One guest was a Mr Wilson, who looking at clouds had the inspiration to develop a cloud chamber, which became instrumental in the development of atomic energy.
Hi Malcolm, Thanks once again for your message. Yeah we know the shelter well, sadly today its often used as a dumping ground. Spending the night up there did give us a change to have the summit ourselves for a short while. All the best. D&L :-)
Brilliant footage guys, takes me back to 1997 when I climbed it in superb summer weather
Thanks for messaging and watching. Glad you enjoyed it. 😊👍
the opening to this video was sensational, the quality remained the same throughout, an excellent and absolute pleasure to watch! May you both have many more to come!
Hey Steve, Thanks and what a superb message to read!! That certainly makes the effort worth it. Take care. D&L 😊🙏
No words to describe this video. Amazing. I will do that as soon as possible. Thanks for inspiration.
Superb, really nice to hear you enjoyed it. :-) L&D
Inspiring ! Thanks for taking the time to film & share it. Subscribed, Cheers.
Very welcome and thank you for watching and messaging. Its time consuming but worth it when people enjoy the film. :-)
Wonderful video and the landscape is really breathtaking. I enjoyed every moment watching. Thumbs up !
Thank you so much for watching. 🙏
brilliant video, was up the CMD onto the Ben from Glen Nevis, only watching your video do you realise how airy it is. So thoroughly enjoyed it folks, nice one.
Hi Willie, Really appreciate that, thank you for watching. Take care, L&D 😊🙏
Great video guys, very good. Really well put together, and loved the time lapse. Looked like a class trip, atb - Joe
Hi Joe, Thank you very much, very kind words. Really is appreciated! 😊🙏
Superb folks , great video 👌 - best way to hike up the Ben for sure , absolutely love the CMD Arete 👍

Murray
Scotland's Mountains Thanks very much for watching Murray. It’s a nice, not overly worrying route isn’t it. L&D 😀🙏
@@ontheadventuretrails-scotl9389 Not too bad - however , not too sure I'd like to cross it in super bad weather - especially the wee narrow bit at the end of the arete ;) It is however one of the best way up the Ben - those views to the North Face are magnificent :)
Great video. Amazing way to spend the night. Cloud inversions were brilliant. I just subscribed as soon as I saw this video 😁
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for subscribing. 😊🙏
Outstanding wee adventure you guys...love it 🤩
Duck Lover thank you. 🙏 One for your diary! 😊👍
What a superb vlog 👌, excellent. Everything in this movie is fantastic,.. camera work, drone footage, and the music 🎶spot on. You've got me wanting to do exactly the same... except sleep 💤 on top of Ben Nevis!!!... who in their right mind does that?!! Ha 😜. Superb stuff fellas 👏
Hahah 😂🙏 thank you Graham!! Glad you enjoyed it. You’ve gotta sleep up there also.. we know you wanna!! 😂😊🌻 Thank you for a superb wee message and take care. 😊🙌 L&D
Brilliant footage and really loved the timelapse. Need to get back up there if Jager lets me go myself :-0 Cheers
Hah... you may need to sneak out in the middle of the night. Thanks for watching buddy. 😊🙏
Awesome guys, loved it ❤
Thank you! 😊 🙏
NIce video, sorry to know that you couldn't witness a lovely sunrise up there.
Thank you, we'll get it next time. :-)
I've watched quite a few CMD arete videos, and I must say that this is up there with the best ones.great footage and its the first footage I've seen of an overnighter at the summit..looked uncomfortable though!
It wasn't the most spacious spot but was actually reasonably comfortable. A good sleeping mat does the trick. Thank you for your great comment Ken. :-)
Looking good mucker, keep up the adventures!
Thank you, we plan to.. :-)
Fantastic 👏👏👏👏👏
Wow! Great video and camera work!
James, Thanks, appreciated. :-)
Nice one David! Great photography and just enough commentary (no need to gibber as some do all the way through their videos!). A joy to watch. Cheers!
Neil, Thank you for watching and its nice to hear that feedback, very much appreciated! :-)
Great video
😀🙏
Another great video. What bivvy would you say is best. Looking to buy one. Thanks ☺
Hey Craig, Thamk you. 😊🙏
Either of those two haven’t let us down so far. Here’s a link to my product review of the Rab Alpine. otatscotland.co.uk/new-blog-1/productreviewrabalpinebivi Hope that helps a little. 🤙
Awesome.
Really great video. Liked and subbed
Keef...thanks for watching. :-)
Amazing
Very cool , it's a shame you didn't get an epic sunrise , you both deserved it .. but the time lapse was a perfect substitute 👍 well done.
Yeah that would have been nice but defo not complaining with what we did get. Thank you for watching and messaging.
Wow, just wow! Waht a great overnighter, respect for the trip, niche job, well done. Thanks for the share. s it possible to get a list of the Items you brought with you for such kind of trip?
Thanks for watching, glad you liked the film. Hopefully we'll get round to doing dome lists at some point. :-)
Nice 🙂

Thank you glad you enjoyed it. :-)
Great video, loved it. 👍 Can I ask what’s the music you used here?
Thank you very much. It was a great wee adventure! I’m not sure of the actual song name but I get my music from Artlist. If I can find it I’ll send you the name. Merry Xmas 🎁🎄😊
11:09 I was there in 2000, also in July. Back then the top was completely covered in snow. Also there was a heatwave going on in the region for more then a week .
Things has changed a lot in 20 years!
Stunning video and really inspiring! Thank you so much. Love the drone footage epic detail, which one do you use?
David, you are welcome and thank you for messaging. We use the DJI Mavic Air, its compact and lightweight for what we do. :-)
I am watching this & also enjoyed it,i am lo0king into buying one of them North face bivvy bags. I was wondering ,how much would you rate that yellow one,i like the prices, compared to the Rab,prices? Please & thank you for the Video,i am also a Scottish Man & live here all my life. So it was Lovely watch you nice people Enjoy our Lovely Country.
Hey, Thank you very much for watching. The North Face bivvy hasn’t ever let us down. So far we’d highly recommend it. 😀👍
@@ontheadventuretrails-scotl9389 Thanks very much,i wear a lot of ~ North Face Gear & i thought it can only be a g0od buy,so i will buy one,now that you have confirmed it.
Hi great views lovely video any could u help me out iv got a down bag & gore tex bivi bag I just wanted too know how much moisture will build up and will I get damp or do they really breath and let moisture out much thanks ed
Hi Ed, There's a number of factors that contribute to how much moisture you may get inside the bivvy, inside and outside temp, moist or wet weather obviously, quality of the kit. Not all bivvy bags are designed to cope with all weather that can be thrown at them. To my knowledge, there isn't a bivvy bag that gives 100% breathability and is completely waterproof unfortunately. We always experience and expect a degree of moisture. We pick our days for a bivvy and avoid foul weather, at times we take both tent and bivvy if we have any doubts.
Hi, I'm thinking to buy bivy bag Assault.
How does it works?
Is it breathable? Did you have any signs of water after sleeping all night between sleeping back and bivy ( I think it's call condensation)?
Great video!!
Regards
So for the bivvy bags are working well. In our experience there is always a little condensation. Weather conditions create different circumstances which make the condensation greater or lesser. Nothing ever gets that bad though. Thank you for watching the film. :-)
wooowwww
😊🙏 thank you!
Completed it.
sleeping on that hill can be dangerous if a storm comes, when the lightning starts blasting them boulders you'll think twice before you do it again.
Master Hughes We always look at weather patterns when planning our trips. Thanks for your advice! 😊👍
Perhaps they use their brains and checked the weather forecast...... as they clearly did! Also a short walk away is the emergency shelter! Do your research before making an ignorant comment!! Just to clarify it for you...... is a mountain!
@@mikefandango3343 why are some of you always such smart asses and never have your picture on your site. your a dumbass my comment was to them not to you.
Master Hughes he does have a point though!
Master Hughes I have been climbing mountains for most of my adult life and have made many mistakes but have always learnt from them! The biggest danger I find is:- people making judgments of other people’s abilities and knowledge, never assume anything! Why would you need my picture, it’s not a dating site!
Hope your not prone to a bit of sleepwalking lol
Padlocked ourselves in our bivvy bags lol :-)
Beautiful video from you guys. I loved your capture of the cloud inversion. The Ben brings back happy memories from when I climbed it in the late 80s, although i never went up via the CMD arete.
Hi David, Glad you enjoyed it! The CMD routes pretty spectacular i think.
Great video guys, well put together and edited ...does exactly what I imagine you wanted it to do "inspire others to get out and enjoy the views" thanks for the inspiration 🚵😄
Alan, thank you....if its hit the inspirational spot then we are delighted. Thank you again for watching. :-)
Absolutely stunning video. Be it the editing, camera angle, sounds etc. Being a huge huge fan of Scotland, watching this HD video of top of the world(Ben Nevis) has been a real treat. Cheers guys, keep making such videos.
Rajeev, Thank you for watching and taking the time to message. :-)
what a big stone bed for only 2 people.
😀👍
Drove passed Ben Nevis on our way to Drumnadrochit a few time, but we have never stopped. This is a great video though. Can I ask what sleeping bags you guys used please?
Hey, Thank you for watching. Glad you enjoyed it. Lisa’s is a RAB Neutrino 400 Women's. Mine is something similar but pretty old, don’t actually know the model! Both good bags as far as we’re concerned. 😀👍
Brilliant video! Very unique and one of the best videos I have seen. Loved the drone footage too. What topped it for me however was footage of the wine 😂😂😂 Priorities 👏 I've just arrived in Fort William to tackle Ben Nevis tomorrow though haven't plucked up the courage to try the CMD Arete. Good job to you both and thank you for uploading 🙂
Thank you Ashleigh.. sorry for the slow reply! Hope you Ben trip went well and you managed to get a some views from the top. ➡️🍷🤣😉
Great time lapse footage guys really enjoyed this vlog from 12,000 miles away in Perth WA, I must say your bivvy bags looked great 👍
Carl Reid thanks for taking the time to message. 😀😊🙏
The bivouac was spectacular, but didn't look very pleasant.
Steirer Lisa was actually very comfortable with the sleeping mat. 😀👍
Very inspirirng video, thanks.
One question how is the North Face Assault Bivy?
Pros and cons?
Thanks
So far so good. Lots of space inside. Not sure how well it would do in a full on downpour but I think it would be fine. It’s an okay price point also. It’s not let us down yet. Thank you for watching, glad you enjoyed it. 😊🙏
Can you fully zip up a bivvy I case it rains through the night ? I want to wild camp but don’t want the hassle of a tent.
Hi, Yes you could but there’s the possibility of more condensation inside the bag. You’ll soon know when it’s time to zip up! Have fun! 😊🤙
Amazing thanks.
wonderfullll!!
Absolutely awesome video !! Well edited with great shots, you must both be very pleased with yourselves. Most awesome !! That snoring though 🙈, separation by a good mountains top 😂. Well done the both of you 😀
Ian thank you for your kind words! 😊 🙏 Relationship update: she’s left me because of that! 💤 🛌
Nice drone footage - wasn't it too windy for drone flying or does your drone handle high winds ok?
Thank you. It’s wasn’t really that windy on the day. The drone does okay but I don’t push it. Also need to be mindful that you don’t fly it from a place of no wind to somewhere that is windy. Particularly in the hills. All good though. It’s Mavic Air.. works for us. 🤙
Nobody ever shows the steep last section
Haha.. that’s very true! It’s just a bolder field so nothing special to show really. 😊🤙
Nice video, you should try Ben Macdui next. 👍🏻
We've got a film with Mr MacDui… :-)
Fantastic video and place, which bivvy do you think is the best out of the two ?
Hi Thank you so much for your message. Glad you enjoyed it! Here’s a review that we wrote which may help. otatscotland.co.uk/new-blog-1/productreviewrabalpinebivi 😊🙏
What if it rained are them sleeping bags that good ? I'd love to sleep outdoors
We’re also using bivvy bags to keep us dry. 🤙
Stunning video 😁 how were those bivi bags to sleep in?? They look bomb proof
Thanks for watching. They are fine but have their limitations. We do our best to bivvy as often as we can... weather conditions dependant. :-)
@@ontheadventuretrails-scotl9389 thanks 😁 looking forward to seeing more vids 😊 I'll have a look into the North face bivi 🤙
I will be up there in August I’m 70 and really looking forward to it . Thank you for sharing.
Hey Roger, Thank you for watching. Have a safe and enjoyable walk up. 😀👍
Did you get much Condensation in the bivy bags. Thetes not much on TH-cam about the northface bag. What one would you recommend? Good video.
Hi John, Have a read of this, it may help with your question. Theres always a chance of a little condensation in my experience and opinion, on most bags. otatscotland.co.uk/new-blog-1/productreviewrabalpinebivi
Thanks nice to read a proper review.
Superb video. Been watching a few more and you guys are inspiring. Was that a couple of bottles of the vino I saw? Braver than I thought!!😂😂
Hey, thank you very much for taking the time to check out the channel. :-) hehehe... they were just small bottles lol :-)
😂😂 ~Gotta be done! What a place for a wee glass. Lovely stuff.
Absolute legends. Lovely video guys - thanks for sharing with us. Keep up the adventures!!
Jonny thank you so much for your kind words! 😊🙏
Got some god shots here, good video.
🙏😊 Thank you 👍
Enjoy your vid
Fab. Thank you for the reminisce. Did this route in the late 90s, before i understood mountain safety lol. The water from the mountain melt was pure. Interesting choice of bivvy bags (ouch price tag). I've used ex-mil bivvy, & alpkit. Would be interested in vid of the gear you bagged, to get lightweight tips lol.
Cool , Ben Navis is beautiful
😊🙏⛰
A lovely trip and the Arête looked exposed, I’ve lost my nerve for that. Excellent video
Thanks Brian. :-)
Nice one guys, beautifully shot 👌 Not a bad place for a bivvy. The summit looked awfully quiet there. 😁
Kevin Russell thanks mate. Don’t let the lack of people fool you, took a while to get that shot and some trickery in the edit. Lol... it was mobbed as normal. 😀🙏
My wife, 2 sons and I climbed Ben Nevis from the visitor center side on July 15th. Sadly we didn't make the full ascent. We will be going back, it is on our bucket list to complete the climb.
Im sure you'll make it next time. Thank you for watch our film. :-)
what an adventure guys. looked bloody dangerous at one point (4:43) ! but glad yous got there and back safely including the painted nails (3:06)lol great edit as always David. fantastic video.
Hey Lee, Thanks for watching. Everything was under control including the nail protection lol :-)
Gorgeous views! Really looking forward to the CMD Arete one day, even more so now! 😉
Scottish Mountain Goat will look forward to your video! 😀👌
What drone did you guys use and also what model of bivvy, great video and beautiful as well, well done 👍🏻
Hey... They drones the Mavic Air. Nice and light and small.. good for out kind of adventures. Sent you a review of the bivvy bag on another comment. Thanks again for watching. 😀🙏👍
Never had the inclination to climb a mountain but you's have opened my eyes to a whole new experience i just hope i can convince one of the boys to do it with me especialy waking up to that view looks awsome greeeeeeat vid guys well deserved like 👍
Mac, Thank you very much... it’s a comment like that that makes the filming worth it. Give it a try, you’ll not be disappointed. 😀🙏
@@ontheadventuretrails-scotl9389 as it happens me my boss and his son are heading up to nevis tomoro after work he plans on leaving the campervan at a nearbye campsite have you any tips on what we need as its ment to be rainin ?
Mac Duffin have a read of this blog. It’s primarily a summer packing guide but add lots of warm kit and good waterproofs. It’s a long walk up and back whichever route you take. Pack a few extra snacks on top of the norm.
Definitely check the weather on MWIS before you go. It’s not looking great at the moment. There’s lots of mountains around there if you need to change the plan.

great video. also shows those words climate change again i'm afraid. Believe there used to be quite a patch of snow
at the top even in the summer
Adrian Buckland yeah not many snow patches at all. Thanks for watching. 😊🙏
Just subscribed as just found this channel today! Awesome vid! Quick question..... Having never bivvied before what are you sleeping on there? I assume you are not using inflatable mats due to the rocks? Foam mat? Thanks
Hi Paul, They are actually inflatable sleeping mats. That's what makes is a very comfortable sleep. I use the Thermarest NeoAir Xlite. Thanks for watching our wee vid. :-)
Nice footage i did this mountain when i was 11 years old 0ver 40years ago.
Thanks Tony, time for another visit perhaps ?? :-)
