  • The Red-browed Finch is a common but beautiful species of Australian Finch. I filmed these over a 12 month period near my home in South-east Queensland.
    The Red-browed Finch can be recognised by its bright red eyebrow, rump and beak, on an otherwise green and grey bird. On closer inspection, the upper mandible has a slate grey top. Upper parts are olive green with grey underneath. Breeding birds have a lovely golden shoulder patch. Both sexes are similar in appearance. They can be observed in pairs or small flocks, which feed on the grass. They will fly into dense undergrowth, showing their red rumps, when disturbed by a passer-by.
    These little beauties may breed several times a year in good conditions.
    There favoured habitats include edges of rainforest.

    This is lovely footage, thank you. We see quite a few finches, including these, on our property. They are very endearing little birds and are a pleasure to watch.

      Thank you Knut. A little different to your Finches in Europe but they are all beautiful. Regards from Australia.

    Well done. I find these guys very difficult to photograph. The ones in my garden spook very easily. Beautiful little birds though. Superb Fairy Wrens I find very easy to film in comparison.

      Thanks for your kind words. It's interesting to note that the same species behave very differently in different locations. The Superb Fairy-wrens are tricky to film around here but very easy elsewhere eg Tasmania.

    Thanks Tim, these must be tiny birds. Earlier when you had them preening themselves, the leaves next to them looked to be about the same size. A lovely study.

      Yes they are tiny indeed. One only realizes this when seen with other species. Many thanks,

    Among my faves up here on a bushy block at the edge of a small town in NE Vic. They make a distinctive splashing sound in the bird bath and I sometimes hear them before I see them. Its a cross between a whirring, a purring and a cruising putt-putt boat, as they vigorously wag their tail just under the water 🙂

    Tim exquisite images. This is a beautiful finch. One of my favorites. I don't know how you manage, in these difficult times as an Australian citizen. We've heard about the severe lockdown in your country. But this vid is a delight.

    Thanks for the wonderful video of the red browed finch.Just wondering if you had seen the black throated finch in the wild.They are looking for it in northern NSW and southern Queensland.

    • @TimSiggs
      @TimSiggs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes ,I have seen this species but only up North, so they are a different Sub sp. I think the Southern Populations are in serious trouble.

    The picture of the red-browed finch immediately reminded me of the pair of Java temple birds we had when I was quite young (like 6 or 7) in Massachusetts. A bit of research on Google, and now I see why. The Java temple birds are also finches. Perhaps it was the way the red-browed finch was sitting or the red around its eye that made me think of them. Cheers from Liz and Ginger (pic left) in Victoria.

    I recorded a few birds on a bushwalk yesterday in northern Illawarra NSW and I don’t know what 2 of them are - the third one was a whip bird which I love. Can I send the short video of them to you? You may know! I just love bird songs, they are amazing!
