    I was a teletype repairman in the US Navy, as a Radioman. Five level coding started my 40+ programming/networking/IT career. Great times!

    My grandfather was one of the first amateurs, if not the first, to work rtty in finland. I'm hot on the heels of tracking down his old teletype machine and just about to go take my license. One day I'll get that old boat anchor on the air again!

    Not a ham myself, just a filthy casual SW listener right now. Just want to say it's great seeing people around my own age have an interest in this stuff! Radio suffers from many misconceptions about it's demographics. Sure, there are many older, very wise and experienced folks in the community, but there are also curious "millennials" like myself who find the medium fascinating!
    Great channel!

    Why not let the people hear what RTTY sounds like? It has a very distinctive sound as well as look.

    I am a General Class Ham that came back to the hobby attempting to make contact with Puerto Rico via Voice only for emergencies like when PR had hurricane Maria, as I have family members there that I must have a method of sending messages to and receiving messages from through a buddy ham there.
    Needless to say that I have made expensive equipment purchases in attempt to achieve that goal that I will soon be using as boat anchors unless I can achieve the same goal using RTTY because Voice has been a total failure. The problem I have with your excellent video is the amount of side information not relevant to the RTTY basic issue. I will leave this comment saying that I realize you have full knowledge of the subject and I will be back to see your videos as soon as I can sit for additional time to soak in all that info. I thank you for your effort.

    Just fyi, it's pronounced baw-DOUGH (baudot).
    I believe it's where we get the term baud from, if you're old enough to remember modems who's transmission speed were measured in baud (up to 9600 baud -- it was bits per second above that).

    Could you do a video about using Linux exclusively for your shack computer? Would it be better to use an arch based distro to have the most up to date packages for software like fldigi or wsjtx, or do you prefer to add ppa’s to an Ubuntu based distro?

    45:58... it's fun ? Having just got my General and my 7300 being delivered tomorrow, I was keen to see what RTTY was all about. I'll pass. Lots of faffing about for garbled messages ? No offence intended to anyone, but I'd rather pick up the mic and talk to someone than try to decipher the Enigma Code.

      And with our short staffing at work I haven’t had a day off since aug 7 so I’m buying a lot of Chamaeleon antennas and Icom equipment for future POTA adventures.

      Wow thank you sir love your videos, and have starting messing around with radios, my wife thinks it’s crazy and turned me onto this ? The FCC’s ham radio license requirements are unconstitutional. It’s time to fight back. | Pacific Legal Foundation , please check it out 👍 thank you my fellow American, any thoughts would be great

    • @wakeupamericaandresist2413
      @wakeupamericaandresist2413 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As the public learns more about ham radio, they’re likely to appreciate amateur radio’s importance as a form of emergency communication and as an alternative communication infrastructure. That could be good news if it encourages more interest in amateur radio.
      Potential hams will also quickly learn that in order to set up an amateur radio “station,” however, they are required to have a license from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Since 1912, a federal license has been required to operate a ham radio legally-a seemingly reasonable mandate since operators make use of public airwaves, which are under FCC regulation.
      People eagerly joining up for the hobby may not realize that FCC licensure rules require them to give up an important constitutional safeguard of their privacy. In order to receive a ham radio license from the FCC, would-be operators are forced to give up their Fourth Amendment right to be free from unreasonable warrantless searches.

      @@wakeupamericaandresist2413 I'm with you on this. Rights don't change because technology advances. There is no constitutional authority on which the FCC can stand. Same with the BATFE. The only constitutional thing they can do is dissolve. Go ahead and pay the fee if you like peaceful slavery. As for me, I prefer dangerous freedom.
