    2:09 I'm a musician. Looking at the "musical notes" (quavers), the three markings below indicate natural (the green one), flat (the red "b") and sharp (the blue #).
    In the final game you can indeed go flat or sharp on the ocarina by holding Z or R respectively whilst playing, or moving the stick down and up for glissando flat or sharp, or sideways for vibrato. You can mix these functions, even.
    However, no songs in the final game require anything but natural notes, though.
    The presence of these symbols indicates that at one point, there was going to be some in-game use for flats and sharps other than just playing the Simpson theme tune.
    Fascinating!!

    • @n64fan60
      @n64fan60 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think it probably went like this:
      1) They initially intended for some/all songs to include flats and/or sharps (would tend to be one or the other, not both at once). So imagine like the final game, except one or two notes in each song may have a flat or sharp symbol just before them, telling you that you have to hold R when you press C-Left, for example.
      This doesn't easily explain the presence of the natural symbol though. Perhaps you would have a song completely in flat pentatonic, but the odd note was raised half-step to natural.
      2) The music system was more akin to complete music notation, whereby the songs could be in any key, major or minor or whatever, and therefore some of your notes would have to include certain flats or sharps to play in said key.
      I find this less likely than my first point, seems ridiculously complex for a video game that anyone is supposed to be able to easily pick up and play.
      3) Whatever system they actually did have proved too difficult for most players, so they scrapped it in favor of a simple pentatonic scale, all naturals.
      4) Beta functionality was retained because they were having so much fun with it, why not let curious players fool around with it if they want to?
      My two cents.

      @@n64fan60 Also, the natural, flat, and sharp are designed like the three Spiritual Stones. Could that have been more than just a graphical thing? Like, when you get the particular Stone, you unlock the ability to play the corresponding notes?
      Another suggestion: The three "Spiritual Stones" in the Ocarina look like the A, B, and Start buttons. Perhaps you were originally supposed to turn around the controller, hold it backwards with two hands like an ocarina, and use those three buttons plus the C buttons or the D-pad?

      New theory:
      1) The ocarina has gemstones blue, green, and red from left to right. Let's assume that these refer to the colored natural (green), flat (red) and sharp (blue) symbols.
      2) Let's also assume that these gems are the spiritual stones featured in the final game, or are at least something the final stones replaced as people have said for many years (seems logical to me).
      3) Let's assume that installation of each stone would afford Link the ability to play naturals, flats or sharps respectively. Creates weird notion that without any stones the ocarina is just a paperweight, but whatever we'll ignore that for now.
      4) Lastly we assume that the early game was similar to the final game only in that your first three dungeons gave you these stones.
      THEORY= You clear the first dungeon in the beta kokiri forest and get the kokiri emerald (green for naturals) prior to getting any ocarina, so you already have the stone that enables naturals by the time you get the ocarina.
      You then clear the second dungion (beta dodongos cavern, whatever) and get the beta Goron Stone (Red for flats), now allowing you to play flats, which you need in order to gain entry to zoras domain or whatever it was then.
      You then clear beta water temple and receive beta zora stone (blue for sharps) allowing Link to play sharps.
      Now armed with all three stones, giving the ability to play all three types of note, you are now able to get passed the door of time or whatever it was.
      Basically I think the songs got more difficult as you went through the game, blocking progress because you cannot yet play certain notes.
      This is the most exciting thing to happen in 2021 lol.

    • @Sauraen
      @Sauraen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@n64fan60 In the final game, there are two different internal systems for representing Ocarina notes/songs. One covers 16 notes starting from C4 to D#5, and the other is just 0-4 for the five buttons. The first system is used for being taught songs, the second is for detecting them and drawing them. There's mappings between them too. But, if you hack in a song that has sharps and flats, Sheik or Impa will actually teach it to you with the sharps or flats--they're not drawn graphically, but it will make you press Z/R to get the right note and you'll fail if you don't.
      There's also an alternate controller button mapping in the game code which uses A and B, though they're still mapped to notes among the five (they don't replace Z/R).

  • @thinedave

    The spiritual stones also seem to be natural, flat and sharp notes.

      Yeah; it’s so interesting. I wonder what else was music themed in this build.

    • @n64fan60
      @n64fan60 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Indeed, they match the colors! Maybe getting the spiritual stones enabled you to go flat/sharp. However, what could the ocarina play with no gems, given that the blue one means natural? No notes at all until you get the blue stone, or the ocarina simply came with the blue stone already installed?
      This is amazing stuff!

    I've never been nostalgic for Ocarina of Time but I've always been fascinated in the endless pursuit of the community to uncover everything they can about beta and prototype builds thought to be lost. What's in it for me is seeing just how far back we can go in it's development until it starts to not even resemble anything from the end product, to see just how much of it started with trying to bring over things from 2D Zelda before even considering how they'd work in 3D space.

    • @hugoblick3635
      @hugoblick3635 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm the same tbh, ocarina has never been anything I've preached about but it's the first 3-D Zelda, so it be interesting to see what other early ideas they had when they were just free-flowing.

    • @robintst
      @robintst 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Aces Spades Well, being an 80s kid, the original NES Zelda games will always be my nostalgia trip. Now, that's not to say I didn't play and enjoy OoT in the 90s but it's not something I'd ever get the urge to go back and play now. To each their own.
      And yeah, Breath of the Wild totally blew me away for how it harked back to the series' roots, it's what I wanted to see happen for a very long time.

      Unfortunately my glass is still empty, but man, this is a nice find. I always think we are so close to a complete, working Zelda 64 Rom straight out of Nintendos holy basement. I still think it must exist somewhere like the Spaceworld Demo of Pokemon. There exist videos of the Spaceworld where Zelda 64 was presented and we can see a glimpse of journalists playing a build that's completely different from Ocarina of Time. So there are people who actually played this and this demo is the real deal. Just for clarification: there isn't a newly released "early build" of Ocarina of Time. As stated on Forest of Illusion's Twitter, the map and graphics data seen in this video from Ocarina of Time's development (similar to those seen in Spaceworld 1997) were found leftover in an F-Zero X development cartridge's overdump. A "prototype" of Ocarina of Time from another development cartridge was also released today, but that build is only three days earlier than the final build (minor differences are being documented at the time of this video's release).

    The shield thing you mentioned could have been the original design for the bombchus, it's the first thing that came to mind about them

    This was insanely fresh, already watched the twitter thread and the deku tree windows section was discovered and lots more, its insane, this is the real deal, the furthest we can reach without having the original beta rom.

    I wonder if the actor files (the setups that can set enemies, spawn, and many more object placing) were overwritten?

    Ok I’m pretty sure the black note/medallion/arrows are for the shadow temple but that white one is interesting. It can’t be light since there’s already a yellow one so what could it be? Perhaps a point when a wind or ice temple still existed.

    Please get the next episode out soon! This is so cool!
    How beautiful OoT would've been! How bubbly and lively!
    This seems like a direct call-out to people who say Aria's from another game. No, she's from Ocarina of Time. _This_ version of Ocarina of Time.
    This is so cool. Thank you so much.
