    Man, I really wish devs willingly released all this stuff themselves for preservation and historical purposes, it’s all just too damn interesting.

    • @reviveempires
      @reviveempires 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Problem is they likely don't have access to most of this stuff anymore. A lot of the development hardware for OOT probably was reused in other games like F-Zero so all that's left are half erased remnants. Data storage wasn't that big back then either so much like the original Japanese audio track for Dragonball Z where it was lost to save physical space in some warehouse many early builds were likely erased to save digital space. Were REALLY lucky to keep finding stuff like this and those Pokémon gold/silver betas.

      @@reviveempires Nintendo is known to back up a lot of their shit. Gigaleak is major proof of that.

    • @reviveempires
      @reviveempires 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@eric.waffles And as this F-Zero cart shows, half of this was deleted. They likely don't keep every build, especially given that it was made on proprietary hardware. It would be a miracle to find a full beta or alpha build of many games by the company. We don't know how much is lost and how much they have. Just consider yourself lucky that the fanbase has as much as it does and hope that more comes out. It'd be nice if Nintendo did release what they have, but they have no obligation to spend the time and money searching their records and warehouses.
      Whatever the case I'm sure something interesting is still out there waiting, even if its not a full build.

    • @eric.waffles
      @eric.waffles 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@reviveempiresThat could very well be for space preservation given that they were developing F-Zero based on assets from Zelda. But I'm referring to official archives, which is what Gigaleak came from. This is simply scraps that are leftover from a repurposed dev cartridge.

      @secret333plays 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@eric.waffles They keep backups of source code of their completed projects. There is no way they have saved every version of every piece of code for OoT. It is simply impossible, and pointless for them anyway. This game was developed in an iterative process over many years.

    It's funny how after all these years of endlessly discussing Zelda 64 cut content most of what we saw in early press material wasn't cut at all, just redesigned! The unicorn fountain likely being just an iteration of the early fairy fountain shown in the video is some closure that I never thought I needed.

  • @Sauraen
    @Sauraen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Note that the map imports being shown here are very much preliminary--it will take a lot more work to get things like the animated textures and the actors working. Don't worry, those elements are in the dump, just harder to import into a retail build!

    • @undeadknight01
      @undeadknight01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The actors, shaders and animated textures are still in there? I thought they were all erased?

    • @Sauraen
      @Sauraen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@undeadknight01 The beta versions of the actors are gone, but the references to them in the scenes are there. For example, "spawn actor 0x8C at ". The thing is, 0x8C may have been a tree at that time for example, but since the actor numbers have changed, now 0x8C may be some random enemy or NPC, or it may not exist and immediately crash. So, for this version, z64me just took out all references to the actors.
      The shaders are gone but the textures that would have been animated are there. That's why all the animated texture stuff looks wonky in this import, z64me is just using shaders from the final game, which will sometimes result in the wrong animation speed or things like that.

    I know quite a bit of people got excited about the fairy fountain at first because of the infamous unicorn fountain, but honestly, judging from the screen caps of it that exist, it seems to me that the unicorn fountain might’ve been from a later build that hasn’t been uncovered yet. its interesting because it was nintendo really learning how to deal with 3d. I know they built the ground work with Mario 64, but its easier making cartoony games, this was their first real effort into making a story driven "realistic" 3d experience, and its amazing to see how different their starting ideas where to the end product

    These side by sides...the nostalgia. It is so surreal it's absolutely insane that this is happening. I never thought we'd see the day. At 3:11 it's crazy to me to see this (or any of this really) in full high quality next to the old grainy photos. All this time I thought that shape in the distance were just ominous hills or mountains, but it was a fully textured brick wall akin to some old Windows screensaver. It's just crazy to be able to fully and undeniably identify any obscure shapes from the old screenshots over 22 years later. Like how in the left part of the screenshot, you can see the broken part of the brick wall (which made me think it was a distant mountain) that is seen in the footage. I can't get over this. A huge mystery for so long is finally being revealed. Literally feels like my whole life wondering what might have been. This game came out when I was 6 and finally at 28 I get to see all this gold

    Interesting how the toombstones actually have crosses on them. This is back when the Zelda world had a lot of quasi-christian elements in it. Like that old concept art of Link praying in a church in front of a crucifix, and his shield having a cross on it as well.
    Can't help but wonder how cool it might have been if Zelda ended up being some kind of Narnia style fantasy instead of what we got. Making something original was probably for the best, but still cool to think about..

      That was my favorite aspect of the earlier zelda games, sadly that was the era where the government weaponized conservative parents who wanted to limit the reach of japanese media, just like how they limited toy company related media, they got rid of transformers and gi joe, so they created a vaccuum that would be later filled with pokemon, and since nintendo never had any interest in butting heads over screeching americans in things that don't affect their overall games anyway, they gave up on the whole christian aspect of the zelda games.

    The early version seems to follow TLOZ1's design a lot more.
    The maps are surrounded by land and only have tiny exists to go from one to another.
    It kinda makes you appreciate the final product a lot more. It looks so much better in the final game. Compact, but packed with details.
    That being said, i still really hope that the beta Hyrule Castle Town is still there.
    Edit: Also the Fairy Fountain way cooler than the final one. Even has an actual fountain.

    It's so interesting to see how simplistic a lot of the early maps are. Seems like they were smart about prototyping and not spending too much time making the early versions during development. Also, everything is so huge! Is that because the game was originally planned for the 64DD?

    I've also heard that Hyrule Field was massively overhauled at some point. I'm curious if that's in the dump or not.

    These areas look like concept models and the texture on the graves looks like a placeholder, in my opinion. All the graves have the same texture and they feature a cross which I doubt Nintendo would ever allow in a retail game. I'm guessing all this was made to test ideas, kind of like storyboards or animatics in animation. I wonder if the playable version of this was just selectable test levels. But, hey, that's just a theory...

    Now we need to find the Zelda 64 dev cart that overwrote the F-Zero data. Maybe we'll find the missing half of Zelda 64.

    Can’t wait for the rom hacking community to get ahold of some of this stuff.
    Like I was aware that the medallions were at one point supposed to give powers, some of which got into the final game. Someone could make a really fun Zelda game with those.
