    I desnorked many years ago. Never had an issue. There is a wall between the snork and the engine compartment - this in addition to the air box itself. In the day, I researched this extensively. The only rationale that makes sense is that the snork was inserted to reduce noise for euro specs. The other rationales just make no sense once you look at the set up in the 986. I submit there is a noticably deeper intake sound. For my part, I felt it was worth the MASSIVE investment. Is it night and day? Nope. But again, the price is right.
    Full disclosure - I broke the foremost clip on the colored portion of the finned cover. I used epoxy to repair and never had an issue. Many of my friends also desnorked at the same event. None ever had a negative experience.
    Is that evidence anecdotal? Yup.
    Can you reverse the job? Yup - one friend put it back to sell the car.

    Great video. Not sure if anybody has talked about this. As an engineer thinking of physics; when you squeeze or have a tube that is smaller it will increase the flow when pushed through or sucked in this case. Thinking of water flow and sprinkler tubing, when you decrease the diameter it will make the flow faster and go farther. Understanding the thought process for more "free flow air" or sound, I say keep the snorkel because it's sucking through the right sized tube. Those German Engineers deserve some credit.

    • @HelpMeDIY
      @HelpMeDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Jeff S that would be true of the water if the same amount of water was being forced through it, but if it was just flowing over a smaller tube then less water would go through. I think that scenario would more closely match.

    • @jeffs4760
      @jeffs4760 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HelpMeDIY I see your point. I guess it might be determined by how hard the flow is being forced or sucked in? Then the diameter would matter more is what I'm saying. Think of pulling at 2500 rpms vs really sucking @ 6000? But then again you're trying to get as much air as possible. Interesting. I'm wonder if there is a way to test this by the MAF? Maybe on a dyno?

    This was the first mod I did to my 986. I noticed, what I think is a slight increase in the sound of air being sucked in under acceleration. Definitely no problem having any foreign bodies getting through as I noticed a fine mesh in front of the snorkel, which I left in place. Great vid as usual. Thanks

    That's a pretty neat idea for something that is basically free. But I went ahead and got the Valved Muffler Bypass Conversion, and the car has a button to switch between the stock and the really loud bypass. For anybody looking for that extra sound in their 986, I would recommenced the Soul PP one.

    Did this on my 2004 986 2.7 and got a check engine light after a few days and lost a bit of low end torque, reset it and same again a few days later got the light again, put the snorkel back and never an issue again in the year and a bit after I kept it before getting my 996. What you need to remember is Porsche make sports cars, it’s not a M series BMW or a golf GTI ect making a passenger car sporty where compromises were made to adapt an economy and cost focused car a sports car Every aspect of a Porsche sports car was engineered from day 1 with performance driving in mind, your intake is already a cold air intake with a large low resistance filter. Taking your snorkel out to suck hot air in off your engine isn’t going to do you any favours. Hot air means less power and worse fuel economy. If you want better sound then. Buy the sports exhaust

    • @HelpMeDIY
      @HelpMeDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Ben Terry since you have done this before you should know that no additional air from the engine compartment is allowed in without the snorkel. And yes, this WAS Porsches “cheap” car made for the masses to allow the company to survive (and thrive). If you think the stock suspension, for example, is anywhere near the level of performance as the aftermarket (non-Porsche) Bilstein PSS9 suspension, then most of the rest of the world and I will disagree with you. ALL car manufacturers make decisions on how to make money, or they would only sell GT2s. I hate that argument

    • @benterry2681
      @benterry2681 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@HelpMeDIY The temperature inside the compartment the air is then drawn from doesn’t have fresh air flow and heat from the engine radiates through the bulkhead and keeping this air warmer that externally drawn air. Also Sports does not equal track, you can do a lot to a car to make it better on a track but it doesn’t make it a nice all round driving experience. PSS9’s are not a comfortable replacement for stock bilstien b4’s for sport and road use and suit only a tiny minority if people who want to deal with setting them up. But regardless here you are not adding a improved part you are tearing out a part that specifically designed to draw cool air in from outside you car and claiming air warmed up by your engine and exhaust stagnant in this compartment is better than air from outside. It's your choice what to do to your car but objectively you have only reduced performance for vroom vroom noises. Porsche's cheap car for the masses still cost more than an M3 at the time it came out, a cheap Porsche is still an expensive car and Porsche pride themselves on engineering and a precision driving experience, every component has purpose and has been tested for that purpose.

      @HelpMeDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The dirty side duct (snorkel) is a tuned length and both the intake and exhaust are tuned to meet drive by noise regulations. So by de-snorkeling you are definitely changing the length of the dirty side duct and it will have an impact on the engine order noise levels...
    As a professional automotive engineer I’d say you’d probably suffer upheat issues and have high intake air temps... particularly on hot days after a hot soak...

      Just bought one today 04/20/21 2001 model. The alternator went off line on the way home. But the battery light didn't come on immediately. I did notice while the battery was loosing power, I started to collect dash warning lights. First the ABS, then Airbag, hood open...etc. I checked the diagnostic codes on all of the modules before the purchase. All the codes were for low battery. I thought it was just from sitting. Likely not. Don't care. I like to wrench and paid $5k for 83k mi!
      So... your lights might be originating from low voltage. The engine looses power at about 7.4v. Amazing really. I am an Auto research engineer in Detroit, help design many autos. American cars are typically designed to stop at 9v.
      But I digress. Put a volt meter on the fuse panel, cig lighter or battery. Make sure your voltage is up.
      Have fun! M
      Check with diagnostic tool.

    I love your videos but this one has a problem for me. I'm 2 minutes into the video and still don't know what "desnorkeling" is. Maybe you could have started with that. I'm not just a pia kid. I have a 986 and am learning how to do my own maintenance on it. I'll do some research and get back to this one when I know what it is about. But thanks for teaching us about the 986. A great car and which doesn't get the respect it deserves. This of course is always people giving their Cliff Claven unschooled opinions. I've found no on on the internet who has driven a Boxster of any year who doesn't think it is an incredible machine.

    • @porsche9869
      @porsche9869 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Patrick Linkous when I removed mine I just gently wiggled each clip out with my fingers as a tool would likely damage the clips. The only tool you should need for the job is a small Phillips head screwdriver. The later models 03-04 had a screen that you would have to remove to get to the snorkel. If you have an 03-04 car you will also need to undo the Phillips screw holding the screen in place. Good luck did mine about a year ago and have never looked back love the louder and deeper induction noise.

    First of all I like you channel, good info. I have a 987 and ended up designing a cover for the 987 after desnorkel (th-cam.com/video/paGo_KYmr2k/w-d-xo.html). For the 986, as I saw in your car, there is no mesh cover inside; but it seems that Porsche placed one on the 2004 forward 986 models. You can see on your video the hole to attach the mesh. If anyone has this mesh on their model I would like to have an outline of this mesh so i can complete the process and send you a sample for testing.
