    Finally a clear overview on how would the CV-Portfolio should be done!
    I Finally have a defined idea on how to layout and take on my CV-portfolio building ongoing task!

    I’m now, right in these days and this month going through a complete restoration of my cv and portfolio to make them professional cause not obtaining effective results over the last 2/3 years after my graduation so today, almost done with the Cv, I was keeping advance watching out for some tips video about the portfolio and yours, the first and only one I’ve watched at now today, it’s very clear and straight to the point of what to do, how to arrange and show up contents in an effective way so I’ll keep watching it again once shifting to start with the portfolio restoration. Thank you. Great job

      Absolutely do not take this little glance-folio behavior as realistic. Hiring managers want to see detailed process through visuals and storytelling. They’ll skip your folio if it’s just an image dump. They’ll also skip it if it’s a text dump so just make sure your text is laid out in a way that *wants* to be read. Like apple, it’s how you tell a compelling story in as little as time possible while covering as much of the crazy sexy unique possible.

    I´m 29y old now and ended up in a situation where i need to re-orientate myself. Through my 3D-Printing and CAD Modelling hobby, i decided to apply for an apprenticeship in Productdesign (Development & Constructs). As i have no actual Work Experience i decided to do simple Portfolio to pop out. This is really helpful! Great Content!

    I would hire you. Most of the products are beautifully designed and look decently simple to construct. I definitely agree with you on the layout. I'd be very interested in what kind of sketching is "good" if this isn't?

    Hey Sam, I am currently a Junior in my undergrad and actively looking for an internship this summer. I am of course always updating my portfolio and have a few questions:
    - I noticed you didn't show much of the process. My University stresses the process so much, but in the real world, what are the most important steps in the project that potential employers want to see.
    - What layout do you recommend? Full spread? Landscape? Portrait? Etc.
    - Lastly, how many projects do you recommend be your portfolio?

    • @SamDoesDesign
      @SamDoesDesign  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Process is definitely important! My portfolio doesn’t show the process very well, and that is something I’d change if I redid my portfolio soon.
      Layout and format are completely up to you. You are in control of the story telling with the layout. Think about how to control the reveal for new bits of information.
      I’d say that my portfolio was a good length to include a varied range of projects. Keep it short, concise, and impactful. you can always take more material to the interview!

    Hi Sam, I was wondering if you could show us a few mock-ups of your university designs. Last year (2nd) we had a lighting project too, I worked with concrete and it was pretty hard for me too get the final result perfect. Your design looks really nice by the way.

    • @SamDoesDesign
      @SamDoesDesign  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish I could! I don’t have my university projects any more. Don’t forget you can use photoshop to improve the photos, or renders to show your final vision.
      Also, don’t forget you don’t need to put every project in if you’re not happy with it

    Hi Sam! You say that the process is so imoportant, as well as the hero shot, but spending just 1-2 pages per project are enough to explain everything that has to be explained, even in complicated?engineering projects? Another question that comes to my mind is: The hero shot is important, but should I put it in the very start of each project, or should I explain the process and eventually get to the hero shot, as a result of the previous pages? Thank you!

    • @SamDoesDesign
      @SamDoesDesign  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! I’d definitely say maximum 3 pages per project. Hero, problem (or research), then iterations. It’s about telling the story as quick as possible, not explaining all of the details (that’s what an interview is for!).
      Definitely put the hero image first! You need to show the finished thing so the viewer knows what the project is about. If you start describing your process and research without the hero image, your viewer won’t know what the point is!
      It would be like putting the story on the front page of a novel, and the hero front cover in the index.

    • @SamDoesDesign
      @SamDoesDesign  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Sam, I noticed your CV is in A4 separate from the portfolio. Normally, do they have to be handed in seperately and does it have to be A4 portrait?
    Are portfolio and CV normally handed in digitally, physically or send to them and then printed out?
    Will it be possible if you could do a video reviewing CV send in by your viewers like me in your own opinion?
    Sorry for so many questions 😬 but i literally have no idea about the industry 😅

    • @SamDoesDesign
      @SamDoesDesign  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great questions! I should have thought about these for the video. You can email CV and portfolios (but make sure the email is less than 5mb) But often, companies will then print CVs off to go through them, so you need to make sure it looks good printed on terrible cheap paper as well!
      A great tip in interviews is to have a beautifully printed book portfolio, and physical CV on nice paper. Companies will love that!
      I'd love to do reviews of everyones portfolio, maybe in the future!
