  • I review YOUR industrial design portfolios! In this series, I give some friendly advice for the portfolios that my subscribers submit.
    In my time as an industrial designer working in London, I've seen a fair few portfolios with similar mistakes. This series aims to help everyone! Don't forget, if I don't review your portfolio specifically, you can use the advice that I give other people.
    If you want to submit your portfolio, head to samdoes.design to find out how to send it over.

    Im going to be graduating this year...oh man.. seeing some of these people’s portfolios are crazy. Makes me nervous what I have isn’t good enough. But I’m excited to try harder and learn more. Love the tips always too Sam!!

      I don't want to make you more nervous, but these portfolios aren't all that good. Most of the renderings and sketches are at a very low level

      Feeling the same way. It's both disheartening and inspiring, but all the more eye-opening how there's so much more to improve on still.

      What school? I'm at CSULB don't worry man everyone starts somewhere. A lot can happen in a year and it comes down to how likeable you are as a person to these companies. You are going to be family depending on the company you apply for if you have a personality and actual hobbies and can relate to people in the workplace you will have a better chance than the guy with the amazing portfolio but terrible social skills and stuck up.

      @@fixhead562 Are you a senior too? I'm at UIC. I just visited CSULB in December haha! I stopped by their design department and saw their posters in the hallways, it looked so good!! It's good to know that personality matters... I'd like to think I'm pretty nice and social. I'm not the best at beautiful sketching, but pretty good in 3d/rendering

      matthewnour97 I’m a sophomore about to apply for Jr year ID in the spring for fall. Yeah the professors here help get you up to speed. I’ve seen students work from when they first started to senior year and big improvements. It also comes down to practicing on your own time but the professors do help with their assignments. Yeah man you will be fine just refine your portfolio when you graduate and look for a job after no rush. Yes just be nice to be around and your strong points in your work will carry you. I know from being introduced to this line of work from my dads friend who is the president at one of the Yamaha design studios everyone plays their part and they place you where they think you can help out at.

    I'm wondering if I should create my PDF portfolio in 16:9 or DIN A4. Because most people will look at it on the screen, but some may print it out. What is your opinion on this?

    Hey Sam, do you think having a PDF of portfolio important? Or having a portfolio website enough in itself?

    • @matthewnour97
      @matthewnour97 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ashuj definitely pdf. When applying for a job you’re going to be sending a pdf, but a website helps to show them more of your work if they like you and want to spend more time on you.

    the last student rated her photoshop skills at the maximum. and now take a look at the composition which can be seen briefly at 18:15 . A more realistic assessment of your own abilities would be advisable.

  • @giantman261

    I'm seeing a lot of good rendering and drawings in these but honestly a lack of genuinely good design and little on the design process. Don't get me wrong there are some good ones in there. I feel employers would look more at the process and the thinking behind things and importantly consideration on how things will be manufactured. I think its also important to look at the end of life aspects of the product/object.
    Just my 2 cents.

    can it be a website rather than a pdf?

    • @SamDoesDesign
      @SamDoesDesign  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Currently, I'd recommend making a PDF first, and a website is nice to have afterwards. You'll need to submit whichever the company has requested, so it's good to have both!
