  • "The seed is strong." Did Jon Arryn's last words really mean what Ned thought they did? How far back does Littlefinger's manipulation go? Is Sweetrobin really who we think he is?
This video contains spoilers up to and including Season 4 of Game of Thrones and A Storm of Swords (Book 3). It also contains hot memes. Don't burn your tongue.

@@Eleusis No wonder Ned and Robert were loyal to Jon Arryn; he was their guy.
Btw the Vale is an excellent place to grow that stuff because the cool weather pushes it to produce more of the resin. Nowhere in Westeros do they have a culture like there.
And the lemon cakes? There is a reason Sansa likes them so much. She thinks it's the lemon, but it's actually what's in the dough that makes them so funky. Just sayin.

@@Eleusis Besides, now that you mention time with wife and such, Jon Arryn naturally was too high on vale dope 24/7 to even have sex, an old man like him doesn't feel too active when he's baked as sh!t, so no kids from him, probably.
Lol Ned not missing a single 420 during his married life is the best theory lmao.
Cat btw definitely stays away from the Stranger's lettuce, and that very thc-heavy old gods dope scares her, she doesn't even feel like Ned truly only belongs to her because he's kinda religious about his smokes.
When Robert Baratheon visited Ned they immediately went for a nice blaze in the crypts, which is sometimes for when Starks want to go "dude I met my ancestors" levels of trippy. Weirdo Robert of course wants to puff one with his best bud next to Lyanna's grave.

This does make the Alayne story kinda a fun ironic twist of itself! Sweet Robin wants to marry Alayne, but Alayne tells him that it isn’t proper for a noble like him to marry a bastard. If Sweet Robin is Littlefinger’s son, then that statement becomes true, but in the opposite direction. Alayne, who is the actual noble Sansa posing as Littlefinger’s daughter, couldn’t marry the bastard Sweet Robin, who is actually Lysa and Littlefinger’s bastard son.

There are always these theories that come to your mind while reading but there arent any videos about them.
For me it is melisandre using davos fingerbones to create a davos illusion.
He lost them after blackwater and she casually mentions them (or at least finger bones in general) to jon while talking about the illusion with mance.
It could just be her thinking of an example but i feel as if she has either used them before to disguise somebody, maybe even herself, as davos to convince stannis of something or is still planning on doing so. Or she may have used it to help manderly execute a davos look a like so that it would be more convincing.
Or to get even more tinfoily (even though everything is probably just a red hering): maybe davos died at blackwater and the davos after that is somebody else?
Ok that is absolutely not the case but i still hooe that there is something behind melisandres line

I was constantly confused about the fostering situation for Robert, but after hearing this theory and doing the reread it all makes sense. Just before the trial by combat at the Eyrie in AGOT, a septon or a Maester tells Catelyn that Robert was to be fostered with Stannis on Dragonstone, the very same Stannis who accompanied Jon Arryn on his little genetics field study with Robert’s Bastards. Reading A Game of Thrones, Catelyn VI,I noticed that the Vale and its landmarks are like both male and female reproductive systems.
The Mountain Road leads to the Bloody gate. The gate is described as two watchtowers
joined by a covered bridge over the road.
To me this is describing the female reproductive system, the two towers connected
over the road symbolizing the ovaries. The original gate was said to be a a rough-hewn unmortared wall built in the fashion of the ringforts of the First Men.
It was then replaced by the current gate during the Age of Heroes, and its said that a dozen armies smashed themselves to bits upon it giving it its name, the Bloody Gate.
This would symbolize a young girl's flowering to maidenhood.
Beyond that is the Vale itself, which is some of the most fertile land in Westeros. This
symbolizes the womb. A fertile womb
At the Gates of the Moon there is a moat. This is where it switches to the male part of the theory.
Over the moat, the Gates of the Moon is described as a 'stout castle that stood at the
foot of the Giants Lance'. I think GRRM is having a bit of fun here and is describing a fat arse.
Further on at the base of the mountain the first waycastle is called Stone (can you see where im going here?)
The path to Stone(balls) from the Gates of the Moon(arse) is covered by forest.
....The trees pressed close, leaning over the path to make a rustling green roof that shut out even the moon, so it seemed as though they were moving up a long black tunnel. Catelyn VI aGoT
Stone is surrounded by a stone wall topped with iron spikes and has two fat round towers.
I think Stone should be called 'Stones'.
The mountain itself is called the Giants Lance which i dont think needs explaining.
At the top of the Giants Lance is the start of a waterfall called Alyssa's Tears. It's named for
Alyssa Arryn who saw her whole family murdered in front of her and never shed a tear.
After her own death, the gods cursed her that she would not know rest until her tears
reached the Vale of Arryn, where all those she had loved were buried.
Alyssa's Tears, comes down from such a height, that the water turns into mist before it
    ever reaches the Vale.
I believe Alyssa's curse is the reason that House Arryn is plagued by stillbirths
miscarriages, infant deaths and mothers dying in the birthing bed.
The waters of the Giants Lance(male) never fertilizes the fertile Vale(female) below.
There isnt a lot of info on house Arryn but the other Arryns that lived away from the Eyrie seemed to
have no problems conceiving children and had quite big families.
The Arryn children who did survive may have been born or conceived away from the Eyrie, like Sweetrobin.
They may have been conceived in winter when the Arryns descend the mountain to winter at the Gates of the Moon.(mabye the Arryn words should have been "Winter is Cumming")
There is a line in Alayne I AFFC...."I won't have him here. You send him back down. I
never said that he could come. Not here. The Eyrie is imPREGnable, Mother said."
in the paperback i have, the 'preg 'part of the word is italicized for some reason. It's the
same in Alayne II...."No one can hurt me so long as I stay here. The Eyrie is imPREGnable."
I cant find it printed this way in any other chapter.

This is possible but I doubt it for a few reasons. First Jon Arryn and Stannis were investigating Robert's bastards including Gendry and Barra. Jon died after reading the lineage book where it was shown that all previous marriages between Lannisters and Baratheons resulted in black hair. As far as we know there wasn't a previous marriage between Houses Tully and Arryn to compare Robin to. Next, Robert Arryn has blue eyes like Jon and Lysa rather than Petyr's grey-green eyes and his brown hair could have come from Hoster Tully who had brown hair in his youth (Catelyn XI in AGoT, Catelyn V in ACoK). Also Petyr was never described as sickly and during Lysa's breakdown where she confessed to killing her husband she doesn't say that Robert is Petyr's son. Research has shown that children born to older fathers have more medical issues including an increased risk of seizures which Robert seems to have (www.bmj.com/content/363/bmj.k4372).

    • @Glidus
      @Glidus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

That could be the case. Really LF just needed to give Lysa a reason to kill Jon so he could start manipulating Ned. So LF pushes Jon to investigate either Joffrey or Sweetrobin, and Jon figures out both. We know that it was Stannis who brought his suspicions about Joffrey to Jon though, so it seems more likely that LF pushed Stannis towards the twincest and Jon just figured out Sweetrobin on his own. I don't think Petyr would have wanted Jon to investigate Sweetrobin, as doing so would endanger his own life.

I don't know why people make the "seed is strong" line more complicated than necessary. It is clearly in reference to Baratheon genetics being dominant. Sweet Robin being Littlefingers son is still possible either way so why would George include it? It just seems like a pretty big stretch and way more convoluted than necessary. In this case the most obvious answer is the right one.

  • @brunomarkic1934
    @brunomarkic1934 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I have a bit of a different theory. Although I do believe that Robin is Peters son and that Jon Arryn was killed for knowing the truth, I believe it was a different truth. In the show, we get the reference that all of the Baratheon children were of dark hair, in other words, the seed is strong. This is why Peter helped Ned in his investigation. Just as he said , chaos is the ladder and I personally believe that he had the necessary foresight to see the possibility of the conflict that would later be known as The War of the Five Kings and that his fathering of Robin Arryn was nothing more than means to an end.

  • @LusiaEyre

I actually completely believe it. However, I have read a theory that Jon Arryn had VD from his younger, wilder days (he was more Bobby B than Ned), which resulted in fertility issues. And VD can cause pregnancy loss (like our world syphilis). So it would even more tragic for Lysa. She was forced to purge her love child and then married off to an old man whose disease killed all subsequent babies. And if her fertility was impacted by tansy too, then it was a double whammy. I don't think she would've gotten rid off any babies from her own will - she feels resentful of Cat that her babies were born and lived. The hatred would've been more inward if she was to bame? I can see Petyr convincing her to do it, but I think she would've mentioned this when talking about having 'another baby'. As if Petyr has debt of babies to pay or something.

A fun third route: What Jon Arryn meant is "The Seed is (from a) Strong".
Rather than find out his son was a bastard directly he found out that another character (maybe Petyr, or even Duncan. Can you imagine he was such a fanboy of the knight he went years looking for his real lineage?) was a descendant of the now extinct Strong House.

It seems very plausible. Just want to say that hair color doesn't completely discount Jon as the father; auburn hair can lead to a brown haired gene being passed along, which when combined with Jon's blonde gene would make for a brown haired child. This doesn't completely dismiss that piece of evidence, especially with the weird genetics of asoiaf, but it does leave the possibility of Jon being the father quite open.

    • @Glidus

Yeah none of the individual pieces of "evidence" are enough to convince but when you stack them all together it certainly doesn't look good for ol' Jonno. This theory makes a lot of sense! The only downside is that it would debunk the theory that Sweetrobin's growing telepathic powers, stems from both his mother's Whent genes and Jon's Arryn genes, as both families have a history of skinchanging. Then again, Sweetrobin often sits on a weirwood throne, so that would still serve as a reason.

The issues I have with this theory are
    1. Littlefinger doesn't seem to have any affection for Sweetrobin and the last thing we saw him do was make plans based around Sweetrobin's death, which suggests to me that if Sweetrobin is Petyr's then Petyr doesn't know about it.
    2. So what? It doesn't seem like anyone alive except maybe Petyr know about this, so it's not like anyone can use it as a weapon against him. He might fall into the kinslaying trap if he decides to accelerate Sweetrobin's inevitable death, but again with no one knowing how would anyone realize Petyr committed kinslaying? GRRM does seem to lean into a kind of Karma system for kinslaying, but if that magically brings about Littlefinger's downfall like it did Theon's then it would be very underwhelming.

I like this theory, it's plausible. Not sure how they would ever reveal it though given little finger doesn't want us to know, maybe he'll just say it in some kind of super villain rant? I would like to hear why you think little finger still wants to kill his son if this is the case, maybe because he only has eyes for catelyn and sansa so a child with lysa is a tortured facsimile of that?

    • @Glidus
      @Glidus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The only ways I see it being revealed is through a grandiose super villain rant or a deathbed confession from Petyr. I could also see it not being revealed at all, as there's no way George can answer every question we have in this story he has left (he also really likes leaving mysteries unsolved).
My personal belief is that Petyr isn't trying to kill Robert, but that's a really contentious statement that I don't have the time to support at this moment. I'd also argue that Petyr can't kill Robert with the sweetsleep. There's also a (slim) possibility that Petyr doesn't know that he's Robert's father, and we all know how much George likes making characters unwittingly kill their own children.
That all said, I do like your idea there. Like, a child with Lysa is just a constant reminder of all the things he could never have. That would be a really neat take on the whole thing, and I actually wouldn't be surprised at all if that turns out to be a motivation of his.

You have a good argument, and there's no evidence to dismiss it. However, I would posit that Lysa's twisted obsession with Petyr would lead her to endure anything to make him happy. I think we can agree to disagree on that matter.
As for my style, I've only done four proper videos so far, and one shitpost. So I'm still kind of finding my footing in terms of how best to present my ideas. The ASX-esque mind-map style is very useful for dumping and organising a lot of information, especially if it's going to be re-referenced, but too tedious in more nomadic settings. On the other hand, the Prestonian method of simply providing images to supplement the monologue, while perhaps unimaginative, is efficient in cases where the theory darts across many individual facets of the story. On the inexplicable third hand, I'm clearly a weird video editing nerd who likes putting weird shit and obnoxious references all over the place. So yeah... I'm not quite sure how to balance all of that stuff. I don't have a concrete plan at all when it comes to animating videos. I just sit down and see what comes out.
