Loved the video. Grew up with the Fabs and bought all the records when they first appeared and several times since as remastered and remixed versions appeared and box sets were released. Also fortunate to see the boys in 1964 in Sydney. Love these new re-releases including Walrus.

Youre right about the drumming. I was astounded by the drum clarity on I Feel Fine Never even noticed how it incredible it is before. Like a Latin beat.

Got the red and blue on CD and for me it is a very mixed bag as far as improvements. Doing an A/B listen comparing with previous remixes and remasters I found myself still drawn to a lot of the earlier versions, and not just because of their familiarity. Most of the Red album was a revelation and the centralising of drums, bass and lead vocals really brings those older tracks into the present day and generally they work. However, quite a few of the songs on both of the CD's had lost their bite and sounded heavily over compressed, the dynamic range suffering badly in the process.

Me again. The New Office you mention is now just of Kensington High Street. I had to got to a Chemist in the high street for work. And parked down the side road. And on parking realised I was outside the Offices of Universal. Being nosey as I am. walked intio the foyer. And found a Large Beatles Cut-Out with them leaning on the actual Bannister Rail.

Thank you for a level-headed video that echoes many of my own thoughts on the new Red & Blue albums. A voice of reason amongst some, frankly, quite manic responses from some corners. I've got the CD box set and yes, 'Walrus' was an eye opener but I'm glad it exists and as I said to a friend, it's not like the original no longer exists! Many of the songs, especially those on the Red album are so fresh and vibrant. It's fascinating to pick out parts that were hidden in older versions. I also agree that Ringo's drumming is wonderful, now that we get a proper chance to hear it.

So right, Andrew, we still have the original mixes to enjoy. I've only purchased and listened to the red album on vinyl and cd and, with a few disappointing exceptions ('She Loves You', 'Girl', 'Hide Your Love Away'), am happy with the remixes. That being said, I wish that producer Peter Cobbin -who remixed the songs on the incredible 1999 Yellow Submarine soundtrack -had remixed the entire Beatles catalog. If Mr. Cobbin had continued to work his magic, all these recent remixes would be unnecessary. Anyone who hasn't listened to the '99 Yellow Submarine sountrack (still available at a reasonable price) is missing out on something special. Interesting video, thanks!

Some of the early tracks pre 1964 are an absolute disaster!! The stereo width, the balance, & the EQ are all over the place. But there are a few highlights later on the "Red" album - such as "If I Needed Someone".

Wow, cheers for the info regarding EMI House. I stayed in Shepherd's Bush 12 months ago and while I got Dad to cross Abbey Road and visiting 3 Savile Row - it would have been nice to track that balcony railing down. 😂
Regarding upcoming boxsets, Apple oughta consider releasing a 'Complete 196- Recordings' set which would consist of for example - Please Please Me and With The Beatles plus the singles, demos, mono versions, etc. They will be expensive but quite a collection. If Bowie can do it, then they can with the Beatles too.
Lastly, love the new remixes PLUS I Am the Walrus which makes me excited for a potential Magical Mystery Tour set where they also oughta include Carnival of Light as a bonus disc. Dreams are for free...

I am a first generation Beatles fan and the story of the the red and blue albums being released in responses to a bootleg. When they were originally released the story was they were the soundtracks to accompany the documentary that Neil Aspinall had made called The long and Winding Road. (Which was cancelled at the time.). It became the anthology in the 90’s. Allen Klein apparently put the track list to together for the albums. So yes I agree with your theory about the lack of Revolver tracks. July 2024 60th anniversary of A Hard day’s Night. New box set maybe ?

maybe the reason for the bonus record with the bonus tracks is because they may have been an afterthought as we were expecting them in September. Olivia maybe wanted more George songs but I doubt that. But as I said the bonus tracks were not planned. Maybe they were listening/reading social media comments and gave us more tracks as we had moaned about putting the red album on cd in the past on two CDs. Now they have packed them out. What do you think. I got the same Box as yourself with Red and Blue vinyl and the cd box.

Remixes on the Red & the Blue are great , they are getting better , Revolver was excellent , can't see them doing the Anthology series again as demos and outakes from each album have been put out on the deluxe editions , agree Now & Then shouldn't have been on the Blue , could have been a stand alone single

Cheers for the vid, interesting info. I haven't bought these, not sure I will. I've read the She Loves You mix is sourced from a 45 with lots of distortion, did you hear it yourself? And apparently there's a guitar track missing from Old Brown Shoe. Which sounds dodgy.

So many people slag the new I am The Walrus remix especially the fade out. I like the mix. Many say they prefer the Love version. It’s mostly great too but honestly I hate the outro once you start hearing the Beatlemania girl screams fade in and take over - which obliterates the King Lear “sit you down father, rest you” line; ruins it for me.

Considering the titles for the red and blue albums, I would agree that Now and Then does not fit. Ironically, when you consider all the elements from the song, technically, it is a recording from 1966 - 2022. I can definitely see expanded remixes of all three Anthology albums. This is going to work with the promise of Carnival of Light, an AI remixed Free as a Bird and Real Love, Etcetera, Goodbye, and many other songs that were not officially released. As for the new mixes, I absolutely love about 98% of them. I was disappointed with Walrus, but I loved that I could hear in detail a lot of the elements right up to the front.

  • @trevorbrown2813

Your sceptical theory is the same as mine. They have been done. But I still think Please Please Me and With the Beatles in one box. And the same with AHDN and Beatles for Sale. Maybe Help and Rubber Soul together in a box. Now MAL was used on Now and Then do you think The Star Club will have the treatment too.
Agree with you about anthology stuff.
    And rock on Ringo.

And tonight I played the new version and then the old version. The new version sounds remarkably better. But I don't like what they did in the last minute of the new one. I know those things must be on the original tape, but they were low in the mix, or mixed out. Now they cover up crucial lines from King Lear (that I puzzled over so much in the Paul is dead era).

Some of the new remixes sound okay, others not. There seems to be a roll off in the treble range which may benefit some tracks but not all. The remix of She Loves You is a disaster. Then there is the matter of the bonus tracks they have chosen. IMHO You Really Got a Hold On Me, You Can't Do That, Within You Without You and I Me Mine don't belong on a Best Of compilation.

Putting Now and then on the blue album is no different to bands that put new tracks on greatest hits compilations . It’s a pretty well used tactic these days . I think the ultimate solution would have been a “ singles compilation “ which could have featured Free as a Bird , Real Love and Now and then ( first 2 remixed ) . At the same time it’s pretty poetic that the red album starts with the first single and the blue album finishes with the last one ..
