  • I am an advocate of buying cheap and used luxury cars, but it can be a dangerous game. While lots of new luxury cars can depreciate by 40-50% quickly, the right cheap used luxury car is going to fit the bill too. However, that's only the case when you buy the right one!
    So should you buy a used car? Or even more to the point, should you buy a used and cheap luxury car? Find out today how to handle this.

      You are 100.percent correct! They are tremendous values! Great car if you are putting high mileage! Only issue I have is that they are dreadfully boring! I only put 5k miles a year now that I'm retired so I got a preowned Porsche with very low miles and a warranty. I also kept my 2019 Toyota Highlander as my everyday errand bang around car. If I was still commuting, I'd absolutely get a Lexus! I really hope they improve they performance and styling of the LS500 in the next 10yrs. I'll be pushing 60 by then and would definitely be more open to getting a Lexus.

      That's why you get something sensible like Škoda Fabia or vRS version if you want faster sensible car. Basically the most sensible fun and cheap cars will always be based on regular car platform (minus Audi as VW platform cars are just rip-offs) like Peugeot 407 coupe.

Hard enough to shell out your hard earned cash for any kind of emergency, but an extra hardship doesn't sound practical. Especially when you live from paycheck to paycheck. Above all else, one definitely has to have an affordable and reliable low cost vehicle to earn that pitiful paycheck.

    People buy cars for different reasons than dependability. I drove Toyotas for a couple decades, and once I test drove a X3 and my jaw dropped. I'm too old not to just have fun with cars as me and the IC engines won't be around much longer. I have 2 BMWs, an Audi and a Lexus. All together they haven't costed me, maintenance and all, as much as one new Grand Wagoneer. But, I would NEVER buy a used luxury car without an extended warranty.

    Some years ago, I was looking for a car and decided why not buy a used Cadillac at a huge discount and enjoy the luxury for once. In shopping around, I noticed a big difference between dealer prices and private party prices. When I asked a dealer about this, he warned me I should only buy from him because only his mechanics could fix all the mechanical failures I would experience. When he was done predicting all the doom and gloom, I thanked him for convincing me to never buy a Cadillac! Ha!

    It's really not that much more than my 07 eclipse I had. The fluids to get changed at the mitsubishi dealership was really almost the same price.

    Hello Mark
    It’s Been a Very Informative video. Thanks for making one. DIY to maintain your luxury car is a nice idea but not everyone knows how to fix these.
    All depends if one really wants to save on the costs then it’s better to learn and keep it fit. Rest I agree with you to have a preowned luxury car rather than a new mid segment car which will eventually depreciate to half of its value in five years for sure.

  • @Jagshemasher
    @Jagshemasher ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Very good. I'd say a key factor in owning a used luxury car is how competent you are at being able to wrench it yourself - and you absolutely hit the nail on the head about knowing which ones to buy and which not to touch with a 10 ft pole . . . keep well away from 7 Series BMW's and Mercedes S Class. Range Rovers . . . .run as fast as you can in the opposite direction. I would generally say stay well away from used luxury car unless you are making > USD$150K or > CAD$200K per annum OR you are really good at fixing your own cars. . . . . but all that being said, just driving something that doesn't require constant maintenance and hassle saves your time ($) and energy . . . .and that is speaking as a mechanical engineer who can pretty well do anything myself given enough time. For me I weight time/stress of fixing my own car vs. driving something cheaper and less hassle . . .and if I want to go 0->100 mph in 6 seconds I have my Yamaha FJR1300.

    • @ECPP
      @ECPP  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well that’s a good point there are faster and cheaper ways to accelerate, but wrenching really is the solution or having very deep pockets. Not having one of those is a recipe for heartache

    his is a very good presentation. Basically, the point to keep in mind is that maintaining any Luxury car is expensive, and anyone considering one needs to have an income or savings that would support routine servicing and repairs on this class of car. Keep in mind that parts (especially for cars like Bentleys or Ferraris) can be absolutely exorbitant. For example, a set of spark plug leads for a Ferrari is over $2000. This is especially a problem with in-car electronics and sensors. A 10-15 year old Luxury car will start to see these failing and requiring replacement. But they are only available from dealers, at outrageous cost, and the labor to re-install them can also be prohibative.
    You are correct that the depreciation on new cars also makes them a poor use of money. The best option is to buy a reliable, but relatively inexpensive used car, like a used Toyota or Mazda. The next best option is to buy a used luxury car knwn to be reliable, with reasonable parts. Lexus is the obvious choice, although Genesis, Acura and Infiniti are also possibilities. Sadly, most German, British or Italian luxury cars will end up costing more to maintain and fix than they're worth.

So for 22 grand I have a car that when new cost 52 grand due to added packages. Yes you do need to budget monthly for maintenance which is not cheap on a luxury car. I budget 150 a month for this. At present this car has 70 thousand miles on it. Once the warranty expires may need to sell it but I have never had so much fun driving a car as I have had with my MB!

    @jackdawson3276 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great advice! The BEST value is getting a used Japanese luxury car with low miles. All luxury cars depreciate drastically, but with a Lexus, you are getting worldwide leading reliability! No need for extended warranties or money set aside However, they are dreadfully boring cars! German luxury/sport cars are second to none in styling and performance, but you need to get an extended warranty and/or set aside cash for repairs. Also, they are best to purchase with very low miles initially, and only if you are going to put low miles on it. I bought a 2019 Panamera 4s with only 13k miles. Im only going to put 5k miles a year on it. I drove 2 states away to get it for 74k. In NY, similar car's go for 80-82k . With some of the money I saved, I purchased a 6 yr full warranty from a reputable company through the dealer for $4500 USC. This warranty actually covers the airbag suspension and according to my Porsche dealer, they actually are good about paying out claims! After the warranty is out, I 'll set aside 10k for repairs if I keep it a couple of years after that. Reasoning is that it may be cheaper to keep it a bit longer, even if I need to put money into it because it already depreciated. A newer car will depreciate as soon as I buy it. No car is a good investment! But at least cars like Porsche give you an experience unlike a generic mundane vehicle like a Lexus. You just have to be smart about it and set aside some cash. Im only in my late 40's and am retired with a 6 figure pension. Maybe I ll get the Lexus in my mid to late 50's LOL. Also make sure you can afford it! We make over 300k a year and have a net worth of over 4 million dollars with NO debt at all. We own properties in NYC that are appreciating in value in spite of Bidenflation!! We got what we have in part by NOT buying new cars and instead owning reliable Japanese vehicles that we kept for over 15 years each. We then used the money save buynot buying new cars every few years and invested it. Now we reap the benefits and treated ourselves to a financially dubious German car. (LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO DRIVE BORING CARS BUT ONLY AFTER YOU ARE DEBT FREE AND HAVE AT LEAST A MILLION DOLLARS IN ASSETS!) Even then, we still bought preowned and got a warranty and still have our 2010 Toyota Highlander Limited as a bang around car.

    To me, buy what you want to drive and can afford, after 7 years the $/year cost should average out if you chose wisely. If around $4-5k per year, Ymmv, then you have gotten good value. Of course better if lower. My wife 09 escape is running us around 1800/yr (great value) It's just one way to look at vehicle expense to compare between your own car purchases

Can we get the 2011 750 Li Msport N63. Welp she got what she wanted . But I did my research and read u pl on the BMW " Campaign " not recall. We took it straight to the dealer and recieved a new engine. We paid 5k

      @@horrorfilmsRmything I'm in a fortunate position of not having to drive a ton. I work from home except for one day a month, and don't travel much, so my maintenance costs are typically very low. If I was one of those people who had to drive like 20-30k miles a year, I probably wouldn't buy luxury cars as much or if I did I'd stick to Lexus, because at that point maintenance would be a much bigger concern.

    The other issue with these used luxury cars is the dealer service. They will absolutely do a job on your wallet.....opening the hood is probably $1000 on the Range Rover, Mercedes S class or BMW 7 series, at the dealer and then a few thousand for the repairs

  • @pm7805
    @pm7805 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    ‘Depreciation’ is a most misused term. For example- If one buys a shirt (sensibly) do one has to worry about depreciation? Probably not. Because he/she knows that the shirt will not be sold back to the market. You use it to its full life and then discard it. But for an individual who changes shirt everyday he has to worry about the lost money and depreciation of the shirt hits him hard.
    Similarly, if one buys a luxury car and uses it to the end of its life no need to worry about depreciation.

    • @ECPP
      @ECPP  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not unless you are willing to learn, and I mean acquire expert knowledge. A lot a maintenance you can do yourself and when you wont do you will always know what is wrong.
    Price of a car = depreciation + maintenance/repairs + insurance
    Never buy without ALL maintenance records and expertise from the best techs. Do not buy if a teenager has driven it...or an adult that drives like one.
    This guy is not that old does he flip cars? In my case I put more than 500 kmiles on my first Porsche (a 924...not the best but under $3000) in 12 years though as a daily driver and only car...my cats LOVED that car ...crossed the Rocky mountains in winter too. Never called a tow truck in 12 years but opened the hood at least once a week.
    Never any engine or manual transmission issue...brake pads lasted 10 years...I dont use my brakes much.
    After 10 years it needed a new steering rack and shocks.
    The bad side: some guys want to race with you ... in the Chicago traffic. Dont fall for it.
    These days Ford dealers wont work on cars over 10 yo...barely broken in?!
    Porche dealers in my experience will never turn away one of their cars ($$$$$$ though).
