I don't hear the bullet crack as it breaks the sound barrier. Microphone problem? DB meter not placed where it can sense that sound? Seems like bullet crack is important to the questions about follow up shots. What is the target hearing?
The noise after each shot that would be the crack of the bullet going super. Listen to the 22s and you can tell a world of difference. The 17hmr suppressed is quiet at the shooter and the crack is down range. No we do not place a meter down range at a target and no we will not place a meter down range by a target. The meter used here is expensive and the one we have now is 10x this one. The microphones are placed at milspec standard to measure the performance at the ear and at the muzzle.-Chris
I really liked your muffler, but I live in Brazil and here we don't have the same qualities as yours, would it be possible to send me the mechanics of what it is like inside for a 17 HMR rifle?
I’d be interested at what the decibels are at like 50 yards.. That supersonic pressure wave has gotta be small that I can’t imagine it would carry very far. But idk. Someone would need to test it
We have been asked to meter down range before but it would be hard to create a consistent standard. Now we use milspec measurements. The other thing is this is a really expensive machine. All it takes is one mess up or baffle strike to send 30k up in smoke. That’s why we have stuck with only metering around the host and with milspec standards. 17 at the ear is nice. All the noise of the crack is down range
We had plans on it but the day ran so long and not all the cans belong to us. So couldn’t bring them home. That’s the sucky part about not owning everything we do videos on is we don’t get to put out all the info we’d like to sometimes! Appreciate you watching and dropping a comment.

Nice video! Now I'm curious how my Sparrow would do on 17 HMR. When should we start looking out for the next video in the Omega, Trash Panda, Vox S and Nomad comparison series to drop?
Thank you I believe the sparrow will hang with the top of the pack. We have the k video dropping next week due to demand and then 300bo. After that we have the 16 & 11.5 223 comparisons lined up. Those will have more cans then just these four.
robert baer rimfire all do really well on rifles from me experience. You get your money’s worth when it comes to pistols! That’s were your biggest noticeable difference is and the biggest difference is frp. A lot of companies blow it off as it doesn’t matter and I’ve even heard some say they don’t add frp into the avg of how it performs. To me it’s what separates the best from avg. I wish we still had access to all these and more for a 22 pistol showdown. Hopefully one day. Thanks for watching!!- Chris
I believe if it’s in state the buy has to have it transferred and pay the tax stamp and if it’s out of state they have to pay two stamps. So it kind of kills the market for people looking to sell them.
Brilliant video. All action, little talk. As long as people get the name of the suppressor or moderator, I think they should be good. Do you guys have a video like this for the .22LR?
CD Smith we do maybe 2 22 videos but that will be one of the next few videos if we can secure some of the top brands that we are lacking. We want what we’d call a master 22 video with all the top brands. A rifle and a pistol version.
No everything is 22 bore. I don’t know of a company doing 17 . I’m having a hard time locating 25 and 32acp cans now for a few of my pistols. Jeb at ARMTAC is making them now. He may do a custom 17🤷🏻♂️
I wish you guys could as well! Fear paired with ignorance and Hollywood makes people think these are only for illegal action when it does nothing but help protect the shooter and keep a quiet neighborhood
That would have been in full standard configuration. Anytime we shorten or flip baffles we will leave a comment noting that it’s not in the factory configuration it shipped in.
That's actually an excellent question.. Without a meter, I never was able to tell a difference, so, I tend to leave it in the "normal" configuration as well.
I can't wrap my mind around anyone arguing against suppressing a 17hmr. Would I form 1 a can specifically for a 17 instead of overboring for a 22? No, probably not. But I would (and did) throw my 22 suppressor on my 17! Cost me $75 to get the barrel threaded and it shoots and sounds great!
There are a lot of people that say it’s not worth it as well as other calibers to me. To me suppressors help every caliber sound better. Even if it’s still loud it’s better than deafening loud! What rifle did you thread? My brother Joey had TBA Suppressors thread his savage 17.
@@SuppressedNation I just inherited a Savage 17 (93r17). The stainless bull barrel version. It's obviously louder than my 22, but I'll take the crack over needing to wear hearing protection any day.
I would love to see you guys do a video comparison for .22 maybe both for a bolt action rifle and semi auto pistol with a sound and accuracy comparison of some of the major cans on the market. I'm going to buy a .22 can soon (I'm doing it backwards as I have several pistol and several rifle cans and no .22 can yet haha) but I can't decide between the Rugged Oculus, the Silencerco Switchback, and the OSS RAD 22. There are some other great ones on the market but I really like the modularity of the first two and the interesting flow through concept of the last. And I like that they have stainless steel baffles because I like to clean some of the crud off with the sonic and loosen everything else before I use a brush.
Operator119 all these videos started from a day that was suppose to be a 22 metering day! We metered everything but! We do hope to get a big 22 master video soon. I’d like to shoot the oss but after seeing some of the numbers posted on it not sure how it’s going to compete! The other two are both great cans!
Suppressed Nation yeah it will definitely be interesting. I mean with the full size OSS cans too it’s louder at the muzzle and quieter at the shooters ear. However the .22lr isn’t a high powered or gassy round by comparison so I’m not sure what to think of that either. One positive is that since .22lr is so dirty it might drastically cut back on how many rounds you can fire between cleanings for both the gun and suppressor. But a drawback might be if you are using it for pest control in a semi residential area and want the utmost quiet all around, well, it might not be the best pick for that job.
@@operator1192 In your opinion, and as a pest control operator obtaining a wildlife permit, what would be your choice? Are we talking air or spring rifles?
Clint Mullins for a can or rifle or what? It kind of depends on where you are going to be shooting and at what distances. Another factor is how quiet it needs to be. In my own personal opinion after having built a Form 1 .22 silencer and buying the Rugged Oculus and some other larger caliber pistol cans and shooting both .22 and 17HMR through them I found the Oculus to be very very quiet. I tested it side by side though a pistol with subsonic ammo that cycles the action reliably and an unsuppressed pellet gun as well as an airsoft gun and the .22 pistol was on par with the airsoft gun possibly even quieter and was much quieter than the pellet gun. For prairie dogs I usually use the 17HMR because I can hit them out at 250 yds plus and it’s still plenty quiet suppressed at the ear. But if you need to be very very quiet and are at ranges within 50 yards then a .22 would probably be best. I don’t know much about air rifles but if you can compare pressures and projectile speeds going through the rifle then with a can the acoustic signatures should be pretty similar to whatever caliber your setup mimics. I hope that wasn’t too confusing. Long story short. The Oculus does a great job because it eliminates first round pop when you need that first shot to really be as quiet as the rest. It does a good job making both calibers quiet but like any projectile braking the sound barrier it won’t eliminate the supersonic crack so if you need to be extremely quiet just go the .22 subsonic route.
@@SuppressedNation I think it would be okay for us to live in different countries, but respect, I'm not a competitor, but for my personal use that I would like to have, but thanks
Outstanding video! Suppressed rimfire shooting is best suppressed shooting :P When I get a few more user serviceable pistol cans out of jail, I will reach out to you to see if you are interested in a shooting rimfire through pistol cans video. I can't be the only one who thinks putting a long heavy Mystic X on .22lrs is fun :D
My first .22 can was not .17HMR rated so I used my Octane .45 or my Mystic 9mm when we'd go shoot prairie dogs. I don't know what the db was on them but they worked just fine.
Do you all know whether an A-17, or A-22 can be suppressed? I’ve got a .22 can and a silencerco hybrid, and was thinking more that the hybrid would be the best but not sure??
Phillip Cabaniss is say but would be easy to suppress. They don’t create a lot of blowback so I wouldn’t think it would put to much on the system. The hybrid would work but definitely not the best. It has a large bore. Tighter bored 22 cans would do great and be a lot less mass to carry around. Morgan at class3 machining or Todd at TBA Suppressors can thread your barrels if you don’t have someone local.
Awesome, Thanks for the reply! I know I can get a .223 end cap on the hybrid, I wondered if that would work, I know it’s heavier, but wasn’t sure with the larger volume it would take up more sound? I’ll definitely try the .22 on one then!
Phillip Cabaniss it will work but just be big. A lot of companies have made really long and fat 22cans for testing and you don’t get the return in performance. That’s why most 22 cans are 1” and 5-6 inches. Optimal performance. Now we see companies going with lighter materials for added benefits. Before I got my 22 can I shot through my 556 cans. I was happy sound wise
Suppressed Nation Great! Thanks for the first hand experience! I’ll check with my local shop to see if they have a smith, if not I’ll contact your recommendations. Thanks again
@@ElEl-g2q there is not a single suppressor in the world that get that low. The dropping of the firing pin in a 22 bolt action is higher than that. The only videos you will ever find with numbers that low are using a cellphone app to meter their cans and is complete bullcrap
Great video! I have a Dead Air Mask 22 HD in NFA Jail right now... I was curious how well it would work on my .17 HMR if I had the barrel threaded for it. Now I know it will be worth it! 👍🏼 I also have the new Dead Air Nomad-LT and Rugged Obsidian 45 waiting for approval at the same time as my Mask 22 HD... Great video guys!! I’ve been looking into suppressing my Savage B-17 F for hunting. I have a couple questions. The first is what suppressors would you recommend looking into and are they able to be disassembled for cleaning? Thanks in advance!
Thank you for watching! Merry Christmas! You will love the B-17 suppressed. 17hmr you still get the crack down range but up around the shooter 😍 I really liked the deadair mask, tbac takedown, aac element and engineered silence rfs22. All the 22 we tested break down for cleaning. Take a look at the ones I mentioned and look on their site at the weights and lengths. Pick which one you think meets your requirements. All are pretty close in sound you shouldn’t be able to tell by ear which is quieter of the 4 I mentioned. Mask I believe will be the easiest take down after a lot of shooting. Then tbac, rfs22 and element in ease of take down imo- Chris
Suppressed Nation Thank you for the fast reply and recommendations!! I definitely am going to look into the above suppressors!! I’m also in the process of having my Ruger 308 threaded for a can. Merry Christmas to y’all and your families and here’s to an outstanding new year!!
Chris Witkowski your more than welcome. 308 there are so many options. Depending on weight , length, material and usage you can go so many ways. I’d suggest a TBAC Ultra 7, Silencerco Harvester or AAC Jaeger for hunting rifles.
I have been waiting for someone to do a side by side test of a multitude of cans for awhile now. I am more interested in .22 LR test subjects, but hopefully ASSume the results are comparable.
sharpend762 thanks for watching! We can only do cans carried by Hansohn Brothers unless the company is willing to send out a demo. We would love to see some OSS cans and have seen many asking for them so who knows maybe one day.
I mean, it is obviously worth suppressing! For anyone who already own a rimfire can, the cost of getting your 17 threaded is marginal. True, it will never be as quiet as 22LR, but nothing is, so don't let that stop you.
cymond amen couldn’t agree more! We use Todd from TBA Suppressors to thread all of our rifles. Like you said it’s never going to be 22 quiet but the can makes it so much more pleasant for the shooter and pushes all the noise downrange!-Chris
David LeBlanc it’s a sweet little monocore can that sounds awesome. Probably the quietest monocore I have shot. Once we get it metered on the 22s look for a full video on it-Chris
Please explain how 120 db is hearing safe? Because shooting 120 db+ absolutely damages your hearing, anything over 120db has instant damage to your ears,I hear it from multiple "TH-cam experts " and it needs to stop, you are flat out wrong, its not hard to find the info a quick google search 🙄
High Speed a constant 120 will damage your hearing but a gun shot is extremely fast. OSHA rates 140 as hearing safe. 120db from a gun shot we shoot all day and never have an issue
It does not matter if its fast or constant, wtf are you talking about? Db's are on a logarithmic scale damage is damage anyway you slice it and 140db will 100% damage your ears instantly
High Speed hear you go. www.noisehelp.com/noise-dose.html The way we have alway read and understood it’s about time exposure to the sound. 140 is peak and anything over is instant hear damage. Not saying it can’t happen 139.9.
Bolt action 22 hits 108-120. Pistol 113-123 usually with cci standard. 17 suppressed all the noise goes down range ! It’s pretty awesome. I can’t wait to try 22wmr next
I've always thought that .17 HMR is one of the rounds that make less sense to suppress due to its velocity .. Perhaps I was wrong; but then I didn't hear any supersonic crack on this. Truth is: Almost all videos have a similar flaw; they can't record the sound "accurately".. PS: I think a single graph with the average, at the end, would have been sufficient and easier to read, sorted by best to worst.
Capturing the true sound is hard! We run three mics to do our best to try and capture the truest representation we can. With the 17 you still get the sonic crack but it’s down range so it’s not as loud to the shooter or mic. With the graph we always just listed them in order of how we shot them but I like the idea of best to worst at the end! Thanks for the suggestion and I may switch that up!👊🏻👊🏻 appreciate you watching and your feedback!
It would but wouldn’t meter the milspec metering standard used by everyone. 17 at the shooter sounds so good. Most of the noise generated comes from the crack down range! Need a 22 wmr to try next! Thanks for watching!
Furyataurus yhm doesn’t make the sparrow silencerco does. Chris Hansohn has one but didn’t bring it on this trip🤦♂️ we do plan on adding it when we do another big 22 video this spring! We are trying to line up cans from companies we don’t own personally yet from friends so we can do the largest 22 metering video to date. Hopefully we can get it done! I’ll make sure the sparrow is there and I believe hansohn has the yhm stinger as a demo we can shoot as well! Thanks for watching.

@@elibecton3558 The mask is great. But like you said it’s a little heavy on a pistol. Well let me change that, it’s not heavy until you try other suppressors and then you’re like, I definitely notice the can. I have not shot any of the new 22cans yet but the oculus, element 2, tbac takedown and Hansohn’s Vidar cans are great that match well with the mask but lighter. Diligent,Resilient, Liberty Precision each have 22 and I believe Otter Creek as well. The good thing about those guys is they have the mask to be the measuring stick! They get to work their magic until they can be lighter and quieter. So I’d probably contact one of the last 4 and buy which ever I could find in stock. @@SuppressedNation i’m not saying it’s a total game breaker, but 6 ounces on the end of a rifle, is more than it feels in your hands, but like your video proves, The lighter suppressors seem to be A few decibels louder, which I’m assuming you can’t really notice, I visited a gun store that was local, and he only had a few, newer release, lighter cans, unfortunately, they have very little documented on them, other than they would work on a 17 rifle, and I don’t think these can be returned like a pair of shoes 😂 either way, I’ll probably end up getting a silencer co switchback or the mask hd (mabey the fn catch 22t), i’ve looked at a bunch, and most of them have if not the exact same baffle design as the other, only difference is the material, but Thanks for the reply, you’re more help than any of these manufacturers i i’ve talked to.
@@elibecton3558 the great thing about the switchback is when you move it over to rifles like a 22 with ammo that stays subsonic like cci standards velocity you can drop that thing back to only a few baffles and it’s stupid quiet. leandro costa I don’t have any of the diagrams of the insides. Google form1 22 suppressor or cutaway design of a suppressor
The only missing thing I would be interested in aside from the excellent info given would be the suppressor weight. Great content though!
We had plans on it but the day ran so long and not all the cans belong to us. So couldn’t bring them home. That’s the sucky part about not owning everything we do videos on is we don’t get to put out all the info we’d like to sometimes! Appreciate you watching and dropping a comment.
@@SuppressedNation Like I said great content guys, and I totally get it. I was going to add in my comment that I was too lazy to go find the info on it myself...but I was too lazy :-D
So from what I've gathered is they're all perform about the same except that the best performing one is also the cheapest?
robert baer rimfire all do really well on rifles from me experience.
Say you wanted to sell your firearm w/ suppressor. What’s the process like for that?
I believe if it’s in state the buy has to have it transferred and pay the tax stamp and if it’s out of state they have to pay two stamps. So it kind of kills the market for people looking to sell them.
@@SuppressedNation Gotcha. So basically, if you want a suppressor, its best to be committed to keeping the gun you bought it for.
So you shooting with the suppressor ammo or just regular kind.
Ammo was at the beginning under the rifle. Standard hornady 17hmr.
Excellent video. Thanks for the information.
Jay Platt 🙏 thank you for watching!!
Were any of the mods you used actually for 17 bore.
No everything is 22 bore. I don’t know of a company doing 17 . I’m having a hard time locating 25 and 32acp cans now for a few of my pistols. Jeb at ARMTAC is making them now. He may do a custom 17🤷🏻♂️
I wish we could get suppressors in canada..
I wish you guys could as well! Fear paired with ignorance and Hollywood makes people think these are only for illegal action when it does nothing but help protect the shooter and keep a quiet neighborhood

They are really cool. I’m looking to pick up a nice 17 and 22wmr rifle soon. I have two cans here waiting👍🏻
Which configuration was the switchback in? Full or optimal?
That would have been in full standard configuration. Anytime we shorten or flip baffles we will leave a comment noting that it’s not in the factory configuration it shipped in.
That's actually an excellent question.. Without a meter, I never was able to tell a difference, so, I tend to leave it in the "normal" configuration as well.
.17hmr is so accurate and fun!

Where did you get the barrel threaded? @OhshitPositive cus I have the same rifle and I want to get it threaded but idk where

@@operator1192
In your opinion, and as a pest control operator obtaining a wildlife permit, what would be your choice? Are we talking air or spring rifles?
@@operator1192 btw, thank you so much for your time and responses!
clintmullins3@gmail.com
Next, 17 hmr through 5.56 cans test. Please! :)
Since already I thank you very much for your attention !!!
I would be very happy if you sent me.

The tighter bore of the 22 will improve the sound and be lighter. But any can will help
Awesome! Thank you. Subbed
Much appreciated! Hopefully gave you some good info

I have been waiting for someone to do a side by side test of a multitude of cans for awhile now. I am more interested in .22 LR test subjects, but hopefully ASSume the results are comparable.
They'll be different. 17hmr are super fast making a loud but tiny sonic boom. 22lr are slow but bigger. I don't have any numbers for you though.
Great video! Please do a 22 lr edition of this.
Mike W we will be doing it in the near future with these same cans and maybe a few more if things work out!
Thank you for this video, great format! Please include an OSS Rad 22 in your 22lr test and curious how it performs on this 17hmr rifle too.
sharpend762 thanks for watching!

100% wrong again pal,do you just make this shit up? Heres a link FROM osha www.creativesafetysupply.com/articles/oshahearingprotection-requirements/
It does not matter if its fast or constant, wtf are you talking about? Db's are on a logarithmic scale damage is damage anyway you slice it and 140db will 100% damage your ears instantly
Anything over 115db requires protection per osha and 140db is 75 times louder than 115 db you need to go back to school and educate yourself man
High Speed hear you go. www.noisehelp.com/noise-dose.html
The way we have alway read and understood it’s about time exposure to the sound. 140 is peak and anything over is instant hear damage. Not saying it can’t happen 139.9.
Am I wrong or is that darn near 22lr numbers?
Bolt action 22 hits 108-120. Pistol 113-123 usually with cci standard. 17 suppressed all the noise goes down range ! It’s pretty awesome. I can’t wait to try 22wmr next
love how all americans cycle actions fast like they trying to break it
Right, he’s tactical lol!! 🤣 if I try it I’ll jam it every time
I've always thought that .17 HMR is one of the rounds that make less sense to suppress due to its velocity ..
An extra inch or two would have dropped those levels significantly
It would but wouldn’t meter the milspec metering standard used by everyone. 17 at the shooter sounds so good. Most of the noise generated comes from the crack down range! Need a 22 wmr to try next! Thanks for watching!
Everything is worth suppressing
Always!
So regardless of suppressor the 17hmr is still very loud and dangerous. 120db is the threshold for immediate and dangerous hearing damage.
Not loud at all. In fact is pretty quiet at the users ear and we shoot it all day no ears. You still get the crack down range but very nice to shoot.
No yhm sparrow??? Lame.
Furyataurus yhm doesn’t make the sparrow silencerco does. Chris Hansohn has one but didn’t bring it on this trip🤦♂️ we do plan on adding it when we do another big 22 video this spring! @@elibecton3558 The mask is great. But like you said it’s a little heavy on a pistol.
