    I am a watch collector and I agree with your assessment. Two important elements that watch buyers should look out for: 1. Cheap quartz-movements in watches that have a luxury name....i.e. Cartier, Chanel, Gucci....you are paying for the brand, not the watch. Usually "designer name" watches have very cheap movements and are worth very little for resale. The same applies to famous watch brands which use quartz movements. 2. imitation watches. Italy, Japan and China make very good fake replicas of high end luxury watches. Before investing anything over $500, make sure you take the watch to a qualified watchmaker who will unscrew the back of the watch and inspect the movement's authenticity.

    Solid advice, like it or not. No watches hold value like Patek and Rolex. Only then with certain models. Go slowly, learn before you leap.

    The smaller watches are priced reasonably because the large pieces are in fashion... but fashions come around, maybe the smaller pieces could be a good investment in the long term (since they may come good again)

  • @andybatchelor2765
    @andybatchelor2765 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    That's good advise for buying watches or any kind of good as an investment. Think about what kind of 30year old watch you would want to buy today as far as styles and brands and apply that to a modern watch your buying now. Brands that are kind of unknown or iffy now, will most likely be forgotten.

    Good advise. I bought a Tag but it is for a weekend knock about watch and I have no intention of reselling it. It's a dive watch and has a good look to it but contrary to the advertising of it, the power reserve is barely 12 hours. Even on a winder the damn thing stops. I'll keep it as it serves it's purpose but for collectible watches, I have 3 Rolexes and 1 IWC.

    I purchased a pre owned Vacheron & Constantin 18K dress watch 15 years ago. Integrated 18K case and bracelet. It is incredibly thin. My friends that own Rolex 18K day dates think that it is a Quartz movement. It is a mechanical 29 jewel movement.
    They also have no clue when I wear one of my Pateks.
    I guess there is a difference between knowing the best and having a deep pocket.

    I love watches in the 34-38mm size. My wrist is only 6.5". Anything larger than a 40mm looks gaudy on me. I would think many people do prefer the smaller sizes.

  • @realitas
    @realitas 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It seems like you're saying that people should buy watches that are currently popular, like large mechanical men's watches, but these prices of watches are bouyed by fashion, which inevitably changes. 45mm watches will eventually become unfashionable again. It is surely a better investment to buy a watch that is currently undervalued, like a 32mm piece from the 60s

    Great video. I am a young collector and feel more attracted to the sensible 34-36mm size watches. I do agree that it is the modern style to wear larger pieces 40mm and up. But there are just so many good classics in the 34-36mm range. I also think if you have slim wrists a large watch can look out of place, and conversely a large watch may look quite appropriate on a larger person.
    As for brands Omega and Rolex are my two favorites. Great video thanks again!

    The advice on this video is worthless to 99% of people. The majority of people collect watches because they like them, not because they may be worth money in the future. People who make money from dealing in expensive watches probably would never wear them, they normally wouldn't even care if they like them out or not, it's all about how much they are worth. Rolex are great watches, I've got a Sub Myself. However, there are loads of watches, including tag heuer that look equally as great on your wrist as a Rolex.

      actually it makes perfect sense, because you don't buy a mechanical watch for "performance". Mechanical watches cannot match quartz for accuracy per cost - people buy these kinds of watches because they can connect with the machinery, same as a manual car.

    • @tedubadu2536
      @tedubadu2536 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      the tranny in a ferrari is not a manual, but not an auto. they are "sport" automatics, which is an auto that can be controlled better with the use of manual imput. so no their transmissions arent manual, but they arent true junk autos. .5 of a second to change gear? i dont drive a car that does that...

  • @rickshabin
    @rickshabin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There are many reasons why people buy watches.Telling the time is only one reason. Most of us carry a phone which is accurate to at least a second so there is no practical reason to have a watch nowadays. I personally buy watches because I like the look of them and if they are cheap then so much the better because I don't get too upset if I lose or break them. Having said that I do like to keep a favourite watch that I wear for social occasions which is.....1. Easy to read. 2. Tells me the time, day and date. 3 Is reliable. 4. I like the look of.

    I was given a Pulsar quartz in 1982. Not a luxury or collector's watch by anyone's standards, in fact it was a 'cheap watch' but an attractive timepiece nevertheless and incredibly accurate. After 10 years it would still gain less than 5 seconds (yes, 5 seconds) between GMT and BST changes. Batteries could last up to 6 years if they were bought from a reputable source. Sadly, the circuit failed after nearly 30 years of service.

    • @bernardtan1
      @bernardtan1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Strangely Brown yup it's precisely the only reason to buy a mechanical watch in my understanding. Every person should have at least 1 mechanical watch specially if they have children to pass them to.

    • @bernardtan1
      @bernardtan1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a quartz seiko watch which the battery leaked & damaged it beyond repair. That's the bad side of quartz which can't happen on a mechanical auto watch. That watch hardly lasted a decade to think i only wore it once a year.

  • @HifiCentret
    @HifiCentret 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Many of the things you mention are actually great buys. If you buy em second hand at a nice price. Besides fashion changes and I wouldn't be surprized that if one day the smaller thin mens watches of yesterday once again come in fashion and prices skyrocket because all the old ones are gone.
    Also I do not quite agree on quartz. But we can agree that plain standard quartz movements are probably not a great investment as the movement is unexciting so unless it's housed in a gold case or something special otherwise then you might do a better investment elsewhere. I won't worry too much about quartz. Having a cirquit fail is very very rare. And speaking of many of ETA's they basically have been the same movement for decades - you can swap swap the electronics of an old one with a new circuit or wise versa.
    And besides. Collecting watches is also about passion. If everything had to be the best possible investment it would be boring. And as said. If you only persue what you think is the best investment now then suddenly that's what everyone has and then they're now that exciting. The suddenly a watch like the "Forgotten" Speedmaster will skyrocket in value. Everyone else who had it have thrown it out in the garbage bin.

    Archie, what you are not factoring into the quartz/mechanical cost factor is the servicing cost -factor in three services of mechanical over 15 years and you're up for $2500k plus. Replacement cost for a quartz manufacture movement isn't anywhere near that. This quartz ballyhoo is a master stroke of joint campaigning by the Swiss industry - self preservation.

    thanks Arche - I would like to buy the Cartier Tank Solo as my first proper watch, I love the shape and watch face, I also prefer it to the Cartier Tank Francais, because the Solo has a completely flat face (as opposed to to the slightly curved Tank Francais). Do you think the Cartier Tank Solo is a good starter watch ?? Thanks for your comments.

    Good advice about Rolex & Patek. I own Rolex, Omega, Breitling & Oris plus another couple of German Makes. My Breitling is the Aerospace which is quartz but it is superquartz so it is very accurate and good examples tend to go for good prices. Would love a Patek but they are too much money. If I could own the watch of my dreams it would have to be a Gruebel Forsey. Back to Rolex, my 1965 Rolex Day/Date has doubled in value over the last 6 years.

    Thing is, most people collect watches primarily because they /like/ them, rather than as investments.. I wear my watches, have narrow bony wrists and also think watches should be proportional to the size of the wearer's wrist, so all of mine are less than 40mm. I'm not going to buy a larger watch that doesn't suit me just because larger watches are currently in fashion and holding their value better.. ;-)

    It's so depressing to actually see someone who is just sharing his own experience, knowledge and opinion to be on the defensive. I mean how many times he had to clear that he is about to say the truth and no one should get offended. Nice pieces of advise there, keep up the good work and keep expressing honest opinions.

      Vintage. I'd say stay away from Chronographs, don't buy a quartz (some of the Omega 300hz and megaquartz will appreciate, just watch) Rolex Oysterquartz is undervalued (they only made 25000 or so, ever, and they pump out 800 thousand per year, this is a no brainer) spend 2500 on a good solid vintage piece and put aside 500 for service.
      Take with grain of salt, but I've watched 80 percent of my collection increase in value over the last 3 years, some have doubled. You never know when and what (Enicar, for example) is going to get "hot" but vintage is great because they simply are not making any more. Look at the reissue market.

    What about a Bulova space watch it's the most accurate quart's ever made and it's been in outer space the $370 seems like a good deal it's only got 30 meters of water resistance but then again it's made for flying not diving

    Regarding gold plated, I have candino sapphire swiss made 18 k gold plated and it hasn't, lost a bit of gold, I have it about 9or 10 years . don't different companies, put different gauges of gold on their watches, I had a mont blanc and it was gold plated, 5 microns with leather straps

    Some truth to what he is saying. I have had Tag Heuers when i first started collecting; not the garbage models but the grand carrera. I bought it used and still barely broke even when i wanted to get rid of it. I ended up just going with the Rolex Explorer II until i can afford a daytona. However, I like two models from Baume and Mercier, Riviera particularly the 65541 model and the capeland. I buy all my watches second hand so I won't lose my shirt on it. B&M's quality did surprise me... or i am just lucky, the two pieces i do have are running within COSC and i have not gotten them adjusted.

      One more thing, Tag Heuer's are HORRIBLE bang per buck. Even within the dog shit category, you have some "dogs" that atleast make a good reliable watch. Longines, Oris, Breitling's colt/superocean lines.

    He says to stay away from Hamiltons, basic ETA movement and all....I agree that I would never buy one as an investment, but I have a Khaki Automatic that I wear often. Its a great low cost watch that is fairly accurate and I don't have to worry about it getting destroyed. Nothing wrong with a good Hamilton!!!

  • @schitlipz

    I share your aversion to quartz, but only on the grounds that the crystals can keep bad time from watch to watch. An example would be my *Citizen Eco-Drive Skyhawk*. It goes out by a second every week or month or so (if not on radio control), yet a dollar store cheapie of mine has a circuit that (I swear) seems to be within a second on the year.
    There doesn't seem to be any reason why the resonant circuit and driving motor shouldn't be able to come in easily replaceable modules. I'm no watch-maker so I don't understand why it isn't done that way.
    Besides that it would only be the battery technology that would be of concern. This Skyhawk has a secondary (rechargable) cell in it of which I have no specs and don't know its life cycle.
    I must bash the Skyhawk just a little more... Its funcionality _sucks_. It really does. You can't use the lamp when you're in other modes like the stop watch or timer, the hands often obstruct the LCD, the bezel is a total F-up, etc. Oh, there is just so many bad things about its function.
    The good points on the Skyhawk are that the titanium body and band are just the tops! Extremely light weight and adjusts well.
    My *Bulova Men's 98A107 Marine Star*, is another one I have problems with. It weighs a freakin' tonne! It also doesn't adjust well around my rather thin wrist (or "girly-man's wrist" as Arnold might say) lol. Plainly put, you can't perform guitar on stage with that brick around your wrist. It also throws the time out about a second a day, even when it's just lying around.
    Other than that, it looks really neat and everybody loves looking at it (almost hypnotized). It's only good for casual get-togethers. Though I imagine if I ever took it diving I'd have to adjust the weights on my belt to counter the weight of the watch.
    Your opinion on this relatively "new" *Seiko spring drive* technology? Seems to be a fine convergence of electrical and mechanical tech. Not to mention that the super-smooth rolling second hand really turns me on. Have you had any experience with these or are they so sought after that nobody wants to sell 'em? It tempts me so.

    Hi can you make a video on why we should avoid Baume & Mercier in greater detail?

  • @amoralis123
    @amoralis123 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, I bought my first Rolex in '64. The big problem was its maintenance. It was costly. As a timekeeper, all mechanical watches are useless. As investment, there are better and more reliable items. I have 4 wrist watches: Racine Royale, Omega, Philip Mercier (RC) and of course, the Rolex. Racine Royale is the most accurate of them all except the Radio Controlled one. All luxury watches are expensive to purchase and even more expensive to maintain.
