This is a fun thing you've posted here. I've got a Daytona and 2 Submariners. After many years I still think a black dial/yellow gold Sbmrnr is the most beautiful/functional. It goes to 1000 meters and it's just a great looking watch. Some heresy: I nominate to your list Hamilton Diamond Dial Ventura, the first electric watch, in a tie with Bulova Accutron.I'm sorry if my relative coarseness is rather obvious.Your knowledgeable, sophisticated expertise is rather more obvious!Thnx for posting.

I do love all the watches on the list. However I find the Vacheron & Constantin Calatrava more pleasing to the eye than the Patek. Any thoughts on the caliber? While I appreciate the aesthetics of "dress" watches, call me crazy but the Speedmaster should be on the first spot.

I bought the Speedmaster in June 1973 and it cost me £81. i really wanted the Rolex Submariner but that would have cost £130 I think, at the time, sadly too much for me then. I still have the watch but its in need of a service having had a hard life, that's what bought it for. My day watch is a Pulsar which keeps fantastic time, absolute bargain.

I was really getting worried there when you got through #2 after showing two Rolex pieces without yet showing a Patek.... thank you, thank you, thank you for coming through! I must say I disagree with multiple Cartier pieces (not as much as I disagree w/ Rolex being in there at all though). So many other good companies: Chopard, V. Constantin (obv), Hublot, Perregaux, Longines etc. Shouts to new guys too: Daniel Roth, Michel Jordi, and IMO one of most underrated Dubey-Schaldenbrand. Cheers!

I think one of the most under talked about, yet truly amazing watches for the price point, is the Zenith El Primero. The reserve di marche is amazing. But the classic 1969 el Primero is just a beautiful piece. There are specific ones out there that are cosc certified... Cheers, great choices on watches.. Though I'm not a huge Rolex fan. Maybe with omegas release of the Speedmaster moon-phase watch, master chronometer METAS certified, with the silicone hairspring, sera gold... Just saying, great bang for the buck

Cartier Tank, Omega Speedmaster, and Rolex DateJust definitely belong on the list. Each was either a first that we all take for granted now, or achieved something no other watch did.
One watch that was surprisingly absent . . . Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. The first modern dive watch. Back before dive computers existed, and when dive watches were actually needed for diving. Even ahead of the Rolex Submariner by a couple of years.
Luxury stainless steel . . . The very definition of pretentious.

It goes for more money than list price and if you want a new one, you'll have to wait quite a long time before you see it, unlike everyone of this top ten.

5 years ago I bought an Invicta Pro Diver, which is a mechanical automatic SS watch that looks identical to the Rolex Submariner which appears at 07:40 in this video. The exception is that the Invicta has an exhibition back and keeps totally accurate time, which two of my friends with the Rolex Submariner does not. In fact I can't imagine who buys a SS watch that doesn't keep good time and pays thousands for it when the far better quality SS Invicta is available for a couple of hundred dollars.

I just came here to read the comments to see what you folks who are into watches far more than me like to discuss. Intriguing. The chatter is just like any response to any top X list for anything.
I do have one observation. I work with a lot of engineers from all categories. It is interesting that all of us do some degree (over-degree) of research when buying mechanical, electro- mechanical, electronics, cars, etc. you name it...yes, even clothes (style might be another issue...).
What do far more than the average engineer tend to buy in a watch of late? Citizen Eco-Drive and today the Atomic and mostly titanium built with titanium band. We all agree that it has to do with getting a balance of performance, innovation that works, and the ability to sniff out a deal if you shop intelligently. Not cheap (although there is a subset that buys real cheap and figures if they get a year out of it they are happy, no argument), not ridiculously priced just to make an overblown statement. Yes, we understand the concept of lasting and appreciable value. However, we also understand that a lot of folks wear watches that they paid far too much for. We engineers tend to have other things we like to blow our money on. What does the Woz wear? A nixie tube watch...why not? It IS him.
I've got an older Citizen Eco-Drive, a new Citizen Atomic, A Casio G-Shock, an old Texas Instruments Digital and a similar Seiko, a low end Bulova (a retirement watch for a passed relative), and two or three generic Timex's. Relative to price, they are all +/- acceptably accurate and reliable. Although I think that the Citizens (my older one was worn daily in a very rough environment and has had its crystal replaced as it was so scratched up) and the Casio would take a mega-licking and still work I don't really care for ultra dress watches, to each their own.
Any thoughts on what other kinds of watches that might match up to the Citizen watches at similar price in titanium?
Heck, I've got a new Keurig coffee maker that has a digital display clock that drifts about 6 minutes a day (how the hell does that happen?). I think that Keurig is ducking me...

Nice watches! I still prefer my iconic Spaceview watch by Bulova, circa 1964. I've owned it since 1981 and it keeps great time. I had it rebuilt 2 years ago on my 50th birthday.

Spaceview fully serviced as new worth at least 1000 quid. Not many of the original spaceviews left. Many fakes

    • @toltec13
      @toltec13 8 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm assuming mine is probably a fake, but for being 51 year old watch it has never given me much problems. Although the word "waterproof" is engraved in the back of the watch which is not. I've own the watch since 1981 and dragged it through hell and works well. There has been times when the watch has accidentally been submerged in water and I quickly remove the battery and let the watch vent for a few days before installing a new battery. Recently, I have learned to spray short bust of compressed air on the watch whenever the watch is exposed to water. On very rare occasions, the watch will fog up and I let the watch vent for a few hours and reinstall the same battery. Over the years, I've learn to accept these problems, and I rather see it as the watch "behavior" characteristic.

It's not "Lang AA" it is pronounced "LANG-eh" (I have met Walter Lange in Glashutte) Regarding pronouncing Omega, I have been to Berne, Switzerland to the Omega plant and even their marketing people pronounce it both ways. Breitling, IMO, is a second tier watch and shouldn't be mentioned in the company of the rest. Would have picked the President Day - Date over the Datejust. (BTO the best selling Rolex is the ladies Datejust.) Agree with others, Lange should be #2, not #10.

The .861 movement on the Speedmaster is a better movement than the .321, but the .321 was probably the one worn by Buzz Aldrin as the first watch on the Moon. Omega improved the .861 by dipping it's parts into "RODIUM" in order to get a longer life out of the parts, but it's basically an .861. The improvements on the .861 included a redesigned pusher system made out of "nilon" which some people give it a "poo poo" effect. But in the end it has been agreed by some watch experts, that the .861 is a better moverment, and is easier to produce. BTW, the movement was designed by the Patek family, so if you own a Speedmaster, you basically own a Patek. Do some research on the "Lamania" movement. The movement was also used in other expensive watches, because it was such an excellent design. Also, .861 was also worn on the moon. Some say you can't have a real moonwatch unless you have the .321. But the .861 was also worn on the later moon landings, for example Apollo 17 worn by Gene Cernan. IMHO.

Well put. You can even check out some of the independent watchmakers who also make individual or out of the ordinary timepieces. Or there are small brands like Meistersinger, Jörg Schauer, Temption, Perrelet, Milus Paul Gerber, And for Americans, buy American, RGM, Kobold, Towson, Equippe, or even a quartz Shinola (from detroit)

As a Patek Calatrava owner; It is the watch that you own when you don't need to show off. Simplistically elegant & my 67 yo Patek is more accurate than any other watch that I own.

    Few things:
    1. Lange is pronounced "Lang" with your mouth curling into an "O" when you hit the hard "G" at the end
    2. Gerald Genta, not Gentra
    3. That Royal Oak with the plastic black bezel is an abomination
    4. The Breitling Navitimer - grotesquely busy dial with a gussied up pedestrian Valjoux inside. Hardly one of the 10 greatest, not even the best Breitling (Steelfish or Superocean Heritage Chrono far more interesting)
    5. Omega, not "Amiga."
    6. Rolex in the top ten?
    7. The better PP is the 5204. The Calatrava is 911 of high end watches, ubiquitous and boring

I liked your selections, but I must say that while the Patek is beautiful, I watched my Brother go through 2 of them, and go back to Rolex. He had a Calatrava, and one day he was winding it (very gently mind you...) and it just popped, and quit working. It was under warranty, so they sent it back to Patek, and they fixed it for free. ONE YEAR LATER, he got it back, and within 3 months, it just quit working. He traded it in on a Patek Annual Calender in 18K Rose gold. Now that was a stunning watch. Same story. It spent more time back at Patek then it did on his wrist. He takes such good care of his watches too. His first Rolex looked brand new after 20 years... He now has a Submariner and a Datejust. They are great. Me, I have the Navitimer Cosmonaute and I love it. I might consider a Speed master in the future.. They sure look cool. Thanks for the review.

LOL I mean Audemars Piguet is pronounced O - de mar Pee Gay not Pee r jay - thats Piaget a completely different brand... Lange is Long - e not Langay... and you meant chronograph not chronometre dear me if you are going to be pretentious get it right...

Terrible list; only watch on list that is an actually top 10 is the Omega Speedmaster. The list has nothing from Oris, IWC. Several Rolex are on the list (Rolex is the Bose of the watch world). This list is the equivalent of making a top 10 4x4's of all time and not having a single Toyota Land Cruiser, Unimog, or Pinzgauer... and just listing some mediocre Jeeps and Range Rovers. All together a pretty weak and ignorant selection.

    • @joeloco5129
      @joeloco5129 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Rolex is the Bose of the watch world. Well put, sir! LOL! I must say, there are a few Oris pieces I'd take over all but the gold Patek (which I'd sell to fund a Speedmaster, a Navitimer 18k WG, and an Oris TT1 with the Fricker-made, German case).

Googling only gets me straps made from pure Chinesium.

The Omega Speedmaster movement was designed by Patek. So when you buy a Speedmaster, you are buying a Patek, for cheap.

Thanks for your expertise. It's funny to see one of the smallest watches as being "the greatest". It's my way of saying I didn't fully understand your criteria. Your top 10 is so biased, to say the least. Rolex Datejust?! You must be kidding me... it's obsolete, it's gold case is more expensive than it's internals. Breitling?! Now that's a great watch, rofl! You left one out, you say? Let me guess: is it a Vacheron Constantin, a Blancpain, Eterna, Panerai or Zenith? Or, maybe the "Reverso" from Jaeger-LeCoultre and IWC's Portuguese Automatic Cronograph?! Who knows?... But one thing I know for sure: there is no "Audemars Piaget", it is either Audemars Piguet or Piaget. But then again, it's too much for someone who has 2 Rolex models on his short list.

Brietlings are considered mid end watches by most experts, more targeting middle America. Sorry. Any watch that makes a quartz model is not considered high end.
