    On the slope where you had to backfil, go to Menards and get a roll of brown non woven landscape fabric, lay it on the ground, thenbring in a couple yards of chipped limestone gravel that when packed can form a pretty good surface, and can stop the soil erosion.

    You should put gutter in to water for animals. Looks good !

    Pardon my ignorance as a city boy. I don't have any experience with horses or agriculture in general. I remember a relative having a water trough next to the barn for their horses. Would making use of the roof, gutter, and downspout as a rainwater collection system make sense in this case?

      Kinda hard to tell which boards your asking about but the inner horizontal baords can be 2 by 8 or 2 by 10 your choice, the corner vertical boards to frame out the corner is 2 by 4 for nailing into , hope that helps

    4:27 you mention purlins across the rafters and sides being 2'x4's and judging from the supply list the 2'x4's are only 10'. So the dimensions of the shed are 20'x10'? I'd like to build this I just need dimensions on where to put the concrete anchors and you never state the width. just 20' long by 10' high in front and 8' high on the rear.

    Having sheathing under metal roof is usually a good idea. The noise from rain hitting a metal roof will make allot of horses not even use it.

    • @sevillianc
      @sevillianc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Our horses use one that has acorns dropping during the fall and get used to it..sometimes they use it in the rain some times not. Do you have horses that don’t use them in the rain?? I see them typically under it if the rain gets really heavy..

    How much money did you use

  • @equsnarnd
    @equsnarnd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Beautiful building and beautifully executed. Great workmanship. However...it isn't really suitable for horses.
    Let me tell you why.
    1. Horses need to be able to see what's on the other side of the wall. It makes them nervous to have noises they can't check out. So, walls for horses should never be solid.
    1" slots are preferred with 2" boards. I've seen people build these kinds of structures in their pastures and the horses hardly ever use them because the are blind to everything on three sides. There was a guy in OK who built three structures in his pastures for his horses just like yours 9Minus the good looking metal) but when his horses wouldn't use them, he was told how to fix them and he did it to one and found they used it. He simply pulled every other board from the backside and one end and every board from the other end. The other issue is that horses low on the pecking order don't want to get caught in corners. So that makes them anxious to enter.
    2. Research from Canada says that when putting three walls on a structure, it actually makes it windier and colder. It creates a kind of vacuum that tends to pull air and water in. Two walls are preferred and placed so they are a break against the main direction of wind and rain.
    3. There is a foil that can be used in the ceilings that reduces, by over 90%, radiation from penetrating into the structure. It's a very odd thing, but in a structure without it, it can be hotter under the roof, than outside the structure. In a structure with it, it 'feels' cooler under the roof than if you step out from under it. If you think of heat like water then the foil stops the 'water' from bearing down on you and allows heat to escape from you body leaving you feeling cooler. Again, the Canadian Agricultural centers researched this and got higher productions from cow and chickens when they were kept under 'foiled' roofs. And it 'feels' cooler even though the temp on a thermometer can be the same under the roof as outside. What is different is the "thermal gradient" and that really is a big deal. Also, the foil is pretty inexpensive, maybe adding $100 to the overall cost of your structure.
    But it really is a beautiful structure and well executed.

    • @doreenjohnson8359
      @doreenjohnson8359 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where do you apply this foil? Directly to the wood on the inside of the roof???

    • @doreenjohnson8359
      @doreenjohnson8359 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you leave slots...dont thebugs get in?

    • @doreenjohnson8359
      @doreenjohnson8359 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Canada, the horse flies are terrible from mid June to end of
      July. Our horse shelters have 3 sides and are totally closed in. We hang canvas tarp on the open side to keep it dark..therefore the bugs stay out!

    • @doreenjohnson8359
