Amazing aspect of 90's ESPN NASCAR Coverage was Dr. Jerry Punch being an actual Doctor, responded directly to many pit lane and on track incidents and was able to directly report his work as a broadcaster. AMAZING
Mechanical grip was very foreign in the NASCAR garage back then; look at how much higher off the ground the cars are! They may as well have been racing trucks! Seeing these good ol' boys slide around the corners reminds me of how I race in the video games. The highlight reel always shows my car more sideways than I remembered when I was on track...
Lol mechanical grip was all those NASCAR guys knew back then so idk what you’re talking about. Aero was in its infancy in 1990. The cars had a minimum height requirement and weighed app. 3700lbs too so they’re gone drive like pigs haha.
These cars look crude but very fast. Scary fast as a matter of fact and I see an absence of gravel traps so if they get off course those tire barriers are unforgiving!
And there was no "Inner Loop" chicane before Turn 5. It was added in 1992 after Tommy Kendall's crash in a IMSA GTP race and the fatal accident of J.D. McDuffie, both in 1991. I could only imagine if the old Turn 5 was still in place, while yes, it was a good passing opportunity, yet if your brakes failed or cut a tire, you would hit the tire wall hard.
And compared to the 550hp they have now they had 870hp in 1990 and the cars were a handful compared to now they basically drive themselves these were men!!
Benny Parsons, Buddy Baker, Rob Moroso, Dale Earnhardt, Davey Allison, Adam Petty, Neil Bonnet, Alan Kulwicki, Dick Trickle, J.D. McDuffie, Tim Richmond, Chris Economaki....RIP Gentlemen.
I was watching this race live at home in the Washington, DC area on my 9th birthday. The Watkins Glen race always coincides with my birthday either before, on my actual bday, or after my birthday
I was at this race and I actually had Irv Hoerr in our race pool, being a 13 year old kid I thought I was gonna win the pool, lol and I was mad when Ricky Rudd won the race cause my mom won the race pool . lol
Yes, it was the headers that Junior Johnson designed that came out from the exhaust ports and went upwards instead of downwards like a traditional header.
That was nuts! And he wasn’t pushing it was rolling on its own he was just trying to keep up with it while steering it. It was a runaway car essentially.
1990 was a bad year for pit road accidents and fatalities to crew members. I remember there didn't used to be a pit road speed limit and there was a big change to pit road road rules in the 1991 Daytona 500 which was a big debacle its self with color coded stickers on the windshields indicating when to pit. Turn 5 at the Glen used to be the scene of horrible accidents until they added a chicane there to scrub off speed
My words, "When Jimmie Johnson drives like this to a win he'll earn my respect as one of the greats of NASCAR." JG beat JJ at Atlanta a couple of season ago when Jeff got his 85th win. I said when he "wins" in a race like this I'll give him some comparison to the legends. Care to try again?
Really dude? How many times did Earnhardt wreck somebody to win? On a side note it is great to see these "stock" cars sliding around. When Jimmie Johnson drives like this to a win he'll earn my respect as one of the greats of NASCAR.
Ned Jarrett, Benny & Bob and this coverage on ESPN was the BEST EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ned Jarrett for president

I love these old racing
It’s just amazing how incredible NASCAR was back in these days. These cars were so beautiful! Hand crafted machinery. When NASCAR was at its best!
I love the way the cars look today, really wish they still carried the same horsepower
@@OumuamuaOumuamuaThey would be flying now at 1000 HP. Would be going 230 mph on front stretch at Michigan.
@@easyenetwork2023 that would be really cool to watch too, too bad it isn’t our reality
The legendary team owner himself at 6:18
I was here at 14 years old,inside turn 10 grandstands :)
homergrand99 I was 13 years old and I was sitting on the frontstretch grandstands, actually been sitting there every year since
Love that #27 Genuine Draft look before he went to#2. And love that 870HP!!!!
They were probably under 800 HP in 1990. Don’t think they hit 800 until the mid to late 1990s at least.
In 1990 the Cup Series cars were producing roughly 675 HP. Nowhere near 870 HP.
@@easyenetwork2023 you're right my bad the COT and Gen 6 were around 850.
It’s weird seeing the Glen without the bus stop
I like it, but it was turning into a death trap without the bus stop.
i was in the turn 10 grandstands this day. i was 15.
You was blessed
God the drivers were so exposed and had so much freedom of movement

Yes, why crashing in turn 5 was a 50/50 prospect on serious injury. Lack of run-off and high speeds.

They need to bring back the suspension cam. I remember seeing on mark martins car years ago. Awesome shot.
The Glen before the bus stop chicane.........takes your breath away when they get into Turn 5 braking from 175+ MPH

Why does the 11 sound so odd? Like a v6 almost.
Secret Test by Ford engineers. First trial of EcoBoost Turbocharged Engines.
The test is a success, but mostly on the part of Bodine's driving.
Probably lost a couple of cylinders
It was the result of a different header layout. Junior Johnson was know to experiment with different header layouts.
Yes, it was the headers that Junior Johnson designed that came out from the exhaust ports and went upwards instead of downwards like a traditional header.
Can you imagine Chris Berman Benny parson an John Madden in the booth doing a NASCAR race it would have been awesome
1:56:04 = I am telling you Levi Garrett should of stayed with Rudd.. He fit there
image perfectly!!
Alan Kulwicki pushing the car back.

Good grief, the caution lap pit stops were terrifying.

would of continued with this driver and sponsor combo...

180 degree headers
7:22 lane change before the line. Anyone know when this became against the rules?
As far as I know only when they started doing double file restarts, so probably about like 2010 or 2011.
@@48rulesallThey used to go like 6 wide at Michigan and Pocono on restarts.

Johnson has also been overrated. He’s been the beneficiary of extraordinary circumstances which has contributed to his inflated stats
