    Hare Kṛṣṇa!
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda!
Today I want to show you how to make a Tulasī japa mala. “The japa mala is highly auspicious because it awards all perfection and freedom from the bondage of material existence.” [Śrī Hari-bhakti-vilāsa 17.71]
The japamala that has one hundred and eight beads is considered perfect and complete. You can use different materials to make the japa mala: conch shells, silver, gold, lotus seeds, coral, jewels, pearls, and others. But the most pleasing to Kṛṣṇa is Tulasī.
For example, in the Agni Purana it says:
“One who chants on beads made of gold receives 100 times the merit than ordinary beads. Indraksa beads, award 1000 times the merit. Lotus seeds, award 10,000 times the merit.” [Śrī Hari-bhakti-vilāsa 17.81]
“Chanting on a japamala of Tulasī beads fullfills all desires and awards all the results of all kinds of pious activities” [Śrī Hari-bhakti-vilāsa 17.112]
In other words, the merit obtained is unlimited, because its Kṛṣṇa’s favorite.
Here I am holding a Tulasī plant that recently dried up. The Tulasī plant must be treated very respectfully, we can’t cut branches or kill the plant in order to make beads. It must be a natural process. It is recommended to have your own plants at home, and make your own beads. I wouldn’t trust commercial manufacturers who are driven by economic pressure.
With a saw, you have to cut pieces of wood of equal length and width. Keep them in the same order so that they are already arranged at the time of stringing.
The Tulasī plant naturally has a soft core. With the help of a hand drill or a pin vise, make a hole in the bead.
The ideal is to make the beads perfectly round. [Śrī Hari-bhakti-vilāsa 17.26] I’ve had good success by using a grinding stone.
You will need one hundred and eight beads, plus the central bead, also known as Sumeru.
Afterwards, prepare nine strands of string and carefully braid them in groups of three. [text 88] The length of this string should be three times the length of the beads, so that you have enough string for the mala.
Once you have all your beads and string ready, arranged in descending order, you can start to string them. The beads should be strung in order arranged from biggest to smallest. [Śrī Hari-bhakti-vilāsa 17.92-96] As you string them, the beads should be joined mouth to mouth and not mouth to root. [Śrī Hari-bhakti-vilāsa 17.87]
Here’s an example of how you can pass the string through the bead using a smaller guiding line. A knot should be made between each bead, so that the beads will not touch one another. [Śrī Hari-bhakti-vilāsa 17.88]
After making knots in the string between each two beads, string the extra bead at the top, which is called Sumeru. [90] For the center Sumeru bead, there is a decoration which is made by wrapping string on your fingers, cut it on one end like you see here. Make a knot at the bottom part, and attach a string so that you can tie it to the mala.
Finish your japa mala, by adding the Sumeru bead decoration.
If possible, wash the mala with the 5 products from the cow, sandalwood powder, sandalwood pulp while reciting the proper mantras. [Śrī Hari-bhakti-vilāsa 17.101]
    Here’s the final result.
When your beads are ready, its time to offer them to Kṛṣṇa. Then, afterwards accept the prasadam to joyfully engage in the chanting of the greatest mantra:
    Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa
    Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare
    Hare Rāma Hare Rāma
    Rāma Rāma Hare Hare
Please like, subscribe and share. If you can, please help us make more.
    Thank you very much.
    Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Another nicely presented video with useful practical instructions for Kṛṣṇa bhaktas.
A few questions: What are Indraksa beads? How did you use a grinding stone? What does "sumeru" mean? What does it mean to join beads "mouth to mouth'? Why 108 beads?
    Thanks!

+The Vedic Way I believe the seeds of the tree Rudraksha or Elaeocarpus Ganitrus are used for these prayer beads. It is a tree found growing in great numbers from Manila, Philippines, through Myanmar to the whole of North-East India, Bangladesh, Eastern Nepal and Bhutan. It is tropical in nature and requires growing temperatures of around 25-30º C - which is why it is only found in certain parts of Nepal.

    Hare Krishna prabhu,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
I have watched this video a few time now and am thankful that you posted, seems as though it is the only one with scriptural references. I am attempting to put a japa mala together and have a few questions that I am hoping you can help me with, I would be deeply grateful if you could. First is, what type of string did you use to braid? Just normal sewing thread? Next is: how far from the edge of the string should the first bead be strung, and could you elaborate a little more on stringing them “mouth to mouth”? Then for the Sumeru bead did you pull both ends of the sting through it to tie on top? How did it go on and and how much string should be left in order to fit it properly?
I was also thinking to season the beads to strengthen them. Should that be done before or after bathing them in the 5 cow products? If you think this is an ok idea, do you have any recommendations for seasoning them?
I hope this isn’t too much, thank you for considering.
Hoping you are well and happy in all respects.
    Your servant,
    Bhakta Pat.

Hare Kṛṣṇa! Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda!
      1) Cotton string a couple of times, except they break every six months of chanting. Then I had to switch to nylon string, as long as its Tulasī, I think that's the most important.
      2) The mouth to mouth is a reference from the scripture, I understand it as the bead pointing towards the root, and towards the sky, flipping them upside down every alternate bead.
      3) Yes, I measure the beads together, and then 2.5 times that, should be the length of the string before braiding.
      4) I have used mine for 4 years, and only one broke, also by simply chanting, they develop a natural shine. So I wouldn't be worried about seasoning.
Thank you for your questions. Hari bol! Hare Kṛṣṇa!

+The Vedic Way please use ur brain as well. let me show you how to use! Vedas is given by Shri Krishna. now some Guru transfers this to his pupil.
      what's wrong in it?
Earlier gurus I mean the Rishis n munis were almost or more precise than God himself n there are several examples set. Modern time gurus are not so close due to westernization of Hindu culture. Hence the mantra has been taught reverse way.
Ofcourse I understand you people are exposed after us and I don't blame you for that. however I am a born Brahman (meaning I did good karma non stop for last 7 births) hence I am born in the highest order intellect among Hindus. we teach here the yantra, tantra n mantras much deeper than Shrila Prabhupada. I could easily identify this mantra is taught wrong. It can happen by a Guru as I gave the reason behind it. Whenever you learn anything you must cross check it. here in my place there is ISKON temple. we avoid going there because the mantra is wrong n we cannot imbibe it. We even guide them on right way but they say Shrila Prabhupada has taught. we say follow Krishna not any Guru. Finally, wrong mantras invite you no benefit and to your followers too. Now think what you did is worth or misleading?

    • @praveenkirsur8628

+The Vedic Way ha ha ha...here a village , city or nation runs at exactly same rhythm when it comes to mantras. No one alters them be it any part. even for smallest word, there happens a in depth discussion n rectification & that gets promoted. however customs of prayer offering are different between every neighborhood which is allowed(10-15%) because customs depend finance of each person. its also sometimes seriously opposed. I can't explain you a age old culture over a chat.

    • @praveenkirsur8628
      @praveenkirsur8628 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Praveen Kirsur for instance, all over this planet forget about entire nation, ask any Hindu who they worship at the first among all Gods?
Now this is passed even to new comer. so such is a sync. Any poor, rich, North Pole, South Pole , Black or white, working non working, all follow to worship Lord Ganesha first n everybody next. this is an example of sync among people here. even Vedas are taught in 100% sync among small n great saints here. All are brought under sync naturally and thru gurus.

+The Vedic Way that's the problem of westerners. you start considering men as God n their statements ultimate. I am a Brahman, just by glance we make out the flaws. Please don't advise me on this. Its best to follow what is in Vedas rather than modified version by any Guru because the ultimate Guru of all gurus is Lord Shri Krishna. kindly remake the video with the right version of the mantra.
