      +Shirley Mutchler Ah dang Shirley -- One thing I can suggest is for you to practice on paper or a whiteboard. Practice drawing it over and over again... This will help significantly. You can do it - I know you can.

    Awesomely helpful! Thank you: I've been hesitating to quilt back over the little curved portion at the top edge of each branch of the feather, but realize it looks good and will give me a better feather. Chocolate with almonds ALWAYS helps!

    Thank you for sharing .Your feathers are beautiful and I finally a video that shows how to make them- I was having difficulty bringing mine back to the spine, at times I just brought them straight back but I understand now you make the curve and then down to the spine-I didnt't see the first part how did you mark the spline

      actually the first project was a quilt as you go queen size quilt that my DiL wanted me to make for her mom--it turned out great, very much 'gift' quality, and I couldn't have done it without your help.

    Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing. What needle did you use for the feathers?

    • @karenmiller9629
      @karenmiller9629  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mai - thank you -- I always use a Superior Titanium Coated Top Stitch Needle -- for this weight thread an 80 or 90 eye would be fine. Let me know if you have any questions. Karen, thank you for this great tutorial. I have the same machine and am batteling tension. What do you have your upper dial set at, and have you changed the bobbin tension?
    Thanks,
    Mary

    • @karenmiller9629
      @karenmiller9629  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mary Couch Great question Mary -- On the Horizon (7700) I need to set the top tension up to 5-6 when I FMQ with Aurifil 50Wt in top and bobbin. I do not use the special Janome bobbin casing for FMQ and I haven't needed to adjust my bobbin tension. I wrote a FMQ basics post about a year ago that shows my general setup -- here is the link: karensquiltscrowscardinals.blogspot.com/2014/06/do-you-fmq-process.html Are you dropping your feed dogs ? Are you getting eyelashes on the back ? Would love to help if I can...

    Karen, it seems to me that your machine is moving, rather than the fabric. Are you using a domestic machine? Could you please explain how you've done this?

    • @karenmiller9629
      @karenmiller9629  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Cindy -- it seems like this in the video because there is no frame of reference to compare the fabric to. I am stitching on my home sewing machine, the Janome Horizon 7700 but because I don't show the machine it's hard to see that I'm actually moving the fabric under the needle. I hope this helps...

    Thank you for this video. How long have you been doing feathers?

    • @karenmiller9629
      @karenmiller9629  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Marco mama -- I've been stitching feathers for a few years now, probably about 7 ? Each year, each month, each week, each day they change and improve. Keep on stitching -- it's the key!! Thanks for the comment

    hi. that was beautiful. what are you rotating the fabric on, please?

    • @karenmiller9629
      @karenmiller9629  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ghadia oscar Thank you -- I am working on my home machine and I have a Supreme Slider (teflon sheet) on the machine bed. So when I rotate my quilt sandwhich the Supreme Slider helps the fabric glide to move easily. YOu can see my "setup" information in this blog post: karensquiltscrowscardinals.blogspot.com/2016/02/2016-free-motion-quilt-along-part-iii.html

    would you use a marker even if you are doing a commition job i have had problems with my own quilts, with the marker coming back.

    • @karenmiller9629
      @karenmiller9629  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +anna marie smith Anna - When working with any marking pen I would always test the product first. Sometimes the purple markers are hard to remove, although I've not had any problems when using the Clover Eraser Pen. It's always best to test first though -- good question. Thank you!

    Karen, thanks so much for the info. yes, I drop feed dogs and yes, I do get eyelashes. I'll play with the new settings. I mostly do art quilts. You can check it out at crookedgulleyartquilts.blogspot.com

    • @karenmiller9629
      @karenmiller9629  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mary Couch Checking in to see how your tension issues are coming along. Normally when someone has eyelashes and they are on curves or areas where you are changing direction I would suggest that you slow down your hand movement and/or speed up the machine speed. If you get eyelashes even on straight stitches then adjust your upper tension up. I hope this helps.
