i have learnt in one hour what i couldn't learn in many years of my stay in China, now i can read almost any menu , thanks for your amazing session.....really appreciate .....very helpful yang yang
UPDATE: I just went to a Chinese restaurant in West Los Angeles and ordered IN Chinese! I was able to read enough to figure out what to order thanks entirely to THIS lesson! It was a great moment as I struggle with this challenging language. Xie xie Yangyang and Jason!!!
Thank you for the positive feedback! Learning Chinese characters is so much fun, and really shows the beauty and logic of this language. Are you studying with our Chinese Character Courses on YoyoChinese.com?
Ni Hao I can't thank you enough, I am learning chinese through your channel and this video helps so much. I will be traveling to China April 3rd 2018 and now I am confident I will be able to order my food. xie xie ni very much :)
你好 (nǐ hǎo)! Thank you for this very kind comment... I'm really glad you are learning Chinese with us. This hangout will DEFINITELY help you when you're eating on your trip to China! You have enough time to go through Level 1 of the Beginner Conversational Course on our website before you leave for China, and it's only $10... check it out: goo.gl/57UzGM
This is a great lesson. Thank- you so much. I have shared with the Chinese teacher in my school to share with her students. I wish I had seen this before I went to China.
Thank you for the kind feedback! I hope now that you are armed with this knowledge, even the next trip to the local Chinese restaurant will be more interesting! :)
this was an absolutely wonderful lesson. I already knew most of these characters if not all, but to have an understanding now of how the radicals work and can help us to try to think of what a different, unknown character with that same radical might be, is very helpful! Now when I see other characters that have specific radicals, I can have a basic idea of what category it is most likely in :)
Very good for people who are always trying to improve their reading and speaking skills. The pictures of the characters are very good . I Look forward to the "600" course. Your courseware seems to be getting better all the time.
Thank you Carl! We're really excited about all the fun ideas that are going into the next 300 characters, and hope to have it available early next year. 加油 (jiā yóu)!
for the bean one you could imagine the square as the bean and theres a line over it which means the bean is underneath the ground and then you have the sort of sprouting character underneath that so its like you plant a bean and it sprouts :)
Thank you for the positive feedback... we are glad you enjoyed this lesson! There are 1,000+ video lessons, organized into structured courses on our website... check it out: goo.gl/XcnV8r
the thing I love about you guys are too natural and you just solved one of my biggest problems although I think if you can add pinyin it will become more helpful to learn Chinese name. Anyways thanks for helping us ut here
Miss yanyang I am from Pakistan I can learn Chinese a little bit ,your teaching is amazing, plz tell me from which video I start learning with sequence

你好朋友们, 感谢 for(为?)这个上课! Explaining how the radicals work this way helped me so much. I honestly didn't put that much effort in it either. It didn't seem that important. But so many things became so much more clear! Could you by any chance do a series on the radicals? I and probably lots of my fellow students would highly appreciate it! 再感谢你们
Hi Jeroen - thank you for the kind message! Isn't it so cool how learning the radicals can make it possible for you to read the basic meaning of something in Mandarin, even if you don't recognize all the characters? Have you checked out our Yoyo 300 Chinese Character Course? We really break down and help you understand and learn to recognize the characters in a fun way: goo.gl/LAiv1K
I really enjoyed this lesson, but at 26:38 you point out the characters for eggplant and say it's a vegetarian item and that it's an "all vegetarian" menu, but the first two characters of that menu item mean minced meat.
Good catch - that item is definitely not vegetarian! The hazards of live streaming! It's also true some restaurants may serve dishes with meat added for flavor, but not listed in the dish's name. If you're a vegetarian, it's always good to make sure you are clear when you are ordering: "我吃素的。我不吃肉."
@@YoyoChinese I'm a beginner in Chinese, but an expert eater of all things lol Even if I didn't eat meat, I would still eat this 🍆 dish! Can't wait to move back to China next year. Love your lessons!
For bean... The radical below the 口 can be imagined to be vines carrying this large rare bean out from the ground. For the radical above the 口 it can be imagined as being the sun shining down giving it light to grow.
I am really good at just remembering characters and what they mean, without thinking of what it looks like and things like that. So the character for meat, I will probably never forget just because I saw it and you said what it meant.
For fish, I remember it by the fact that the top part looks like it's the fish's fin, the middle of the character is like the body, and the bottom is like to ocean floor.

This was so helpful that I immediately started to collect menus from restaurants nearby. Turns out unfortunately that most of them use traditional characters and not simplified ones so some, though not all of this translates. (e.g. the character for chicken, for example, is VERY different).
Thank you for the kind comment - I love that you are able to go out and use this knowledge in your daily life! It's true that 鸡(jī) looks quite different as a traditional character (雞), but most of these characters are the same, like: 肉,面,牛. Or ALMOST the same, like 饭 = 飯. Keep at it and soon those menus will be easy to decode! 加油 (jiā yóu)!
This is a great tutorial; pity though you do not show the written words for what the characters represent. Anyway, brilliant video all the same. Thanks!!
Thank you for the positive feedback on the hangout! It's a looser format than the lessons in our structured courses, and we're really glad you enjoyed it. You can sign up and go through the first two units for free. Start here with Lesson 1: goo.gl/jpn7Bi
For fire, I've usually used the method you used but also it could be someone saying "Oh no, there is a fire!" while waving their hands in the air for help, heard it on a Chinese radical podcast (I heard it on Ted Talk, by ShaoLan)
For fish, it does look like a fish cage just on the water surface, being hauled by a fisherman into his boat! This is coming from someone who lives in an archipelago, so I do have a lot more images of fish/fishermen, ^_^
For the cow one I picture the asymmetrical line as a big tag on it’s ear. Like this www.cckoutfitters.com/collections/cattle .....I know other live stock can have them too but cows always seem to have them.
The best approach is to learn a little bit of conversational Mandarin - the pronunciation, basic word order and grammar - and then it's easy to find the vocabulary specific to your industry or interests. So many people make the mistake of just trying to memorize key words, but without being able to say them correctly, just end up frustrated! 加油 (jiā yóu)!
