  • Welcome back to the channel!!
This episode was a really fun one to write and record. I wanted to see what kind of track I could create using only a preamp / distortion pedal and IRs.
All of the guitars in this composition are exclusively written and tracked with the new Victory Amps: The Kraken V1 Series pedal. This was my first attempt at recording and mixing exclusively with a preamp / distortion pedal. I really enjoyed trying to pull all of the tones out of this pedal; with so much gain on tap and all of the guitar tones quad or six tracked, I barely had the gain dial past noon. Characteristically, the pedal has a lot of bottom end and is a bit dark so there was never a problem of a tone being too thin. In fact most of the IRs I chose to use with the pedal in this track either brightened and pushed the mids or tightened up the bottom slightly. You can also achieve cleaner tones from this pedal with the gain close to off and guitar volume rolled down. (EMG 60 Neck Pickup in this example)
IRs used were from Neural DSP plugins Archetype: Rabea and Archetype: Plini. I further blended in IRs from Bogren Digital on the 4 and 6 tracked guitars.
How did you like the track? Which was your favorite tone? Do you think you will pick up one of these pedals? If you have any questions please leave them in the comments and I would be happy to help if I can.
    Thanks,
    Moohees

Got the kraken preamp , I recommend it over the pedal for sure .

Really cool. What is the preamp like? I think the K1 is a very dark pedal. I find if I just use it with an IR it needs a massive mid boost or it’s very dark in the mix.

      @@mooheesmetal5506 it has a 90”s / 80”s metal era sound , also has a tone of punch.

I only have the Kraken K1 pedal not the amp but, it has alot of gain along the lines of a hotrod Marshall it’s hard to use the pedal with just IRs because it’s dark, but in an amp’s loop or upfront it’s awesome.

By the sound of this, V1 isn't really a preamp pedal, it's more designed to go in front of a clean amp.

I agree with you on that point. If you run the pedal straight into an interface and only use an IR alot of EQ post is needed to brighten up the tone but into a clean tube amp you get a hot rod Marshall kind of tone.

Good video and cool riffs. The pedal itself sounds underwhelming though no? Doesn't have much gain and has a fuzzy tone to it.

It has a different kinda tone to it. I thought it was dark sounding so mixing it was harder then I’m used to but I used IRs that brighten it up. It has like a sludgy / modern kinda vibe to it. I’ll see if I can make a few more examples and get it to cut more like a thrash tone. It’s fun to play with for sure to get some different vibes.

Usually when I record guitars for TH-cam i use a plugin like Neural DSP, but lately with all of the IRs available I wanted to see what projects would sound like using a pre amp / distortion pedal by themselves. I quad tracked all of the rhythm guitars and I blended IRs, usually two that are more low end focused and two more high end focused then i adjusted the HP filter on each to make them sit together a bit better. All the times you have tried the pedal is it straight into an amp or its effects loop? I was just wondering what IRs you’ve tried or have you tried blending the pedal with software plugins like Neural or SoftTube?

Can you tell me about vst drum you used??

Sure - The drums in the clip are from ToonTrack EzDrummer 3. The name of the sound library is “Dark Matter EZX” They are pretty much straight “out of the box” usually i create a room reverb track, but in this example I didn’t. The only post processing on them is a HP/LP filter, adjusting the volume of the kit pieces in the on board EzDrummer mixing section and a limiter on the project master fader. There are a handful of preset drum mixes in the EZX, if you like the style/tone of these ones I’d also recommend checking out ModernMetal EZX and Drums of Destruction EZX too.
