90s were amazing, we already had a lot of technology but kids still got together to play on the street. Best of two worlds really.

That truly is a best time for the children, today the internet and the cellphone were changed a lot, not just for kids.
I was 16 in 1990 and i went to my first illegal rave and took xtc for the first time.
The thing about the 90s is that since it was the last decade before social media, smartphones, selfies, and texting, it was pretty much the last decade that people were actually human; socialized in real life, and lived in the moment.
Exactly why I hate the current generation.

I agree with that 100%. Things I'm most nostalgic about are the old episodes of South Park and WWF attitude era. I barely watch any movies that came out after the 90s.

I'm 64, a child of the 60s, a teen of the 70s, and a young woman of the 80s. However, the 90s is my favorite decade. That's the decade my son was young and he and I were having so much fun. He was born in 1988, a true 90s kid and I miss that era like crazy.
Wow thats the same thing my mom said to me. I was born 1984 and my mom was born 1960. Recently she mentioned 90s was her favorite, because thats when she felt established. We would have great vacations and lots of family times. And its so different now.
i wish i was a 90s kid. Just the thought of coming home from school and turning on the tv and watch classic tv shows sounds too good, and watching michael jordan play live. Nowadays kids are addicted to their phones including me

I don’t know why, but i 've got the impression that the early 90s were an extension of the late 80s. I mean, not only social media and other new technologies in general were not fully developed yet, but people used to have the same cultural icons that in the 80s, same movies on tv, same music on the radio, like if the 80s weren' t over yet. I don’t know how to say it better, but, i' ve always got this feeling that the 90s never really started up until 1996, or after. Anybody has the same feeling? By the way, late 1989 born here.
How do you completely fail to mention that the 90's had the BEST cartoons on TV, even by today's standards?

Man, I miss the hell out of the 90s. Such a simpler time where social media didn't exist, and people were more care free. It was wonderful. If I could go back and experience it all again I would.
social media was there, at least here in California. America online was a social media site in the early 90's. We had chat sites, personal page sites, dating sites, porn sites, it was all there. The difference now is the prevalence and intensity of its use and how it has consumed all aspects of life to be the determinant of quality of life

There was a certain magic to being a kid in the 90s. That eagerness to go play outside with your friends or watching a movie on a Friday night. The mysticism of that haunted house , or that enchanted creek. Everything was so fun and exciting. We were so happy and didn’t realize it.

Me too.... Even though my family was really poor in 1990-2000, it was truly a great decade and I'd live it again. Drive-in movies, simple living, summer was filled with kids on their bikes or somewhere socializing. It was amazing.

Being a teenager in the 90's was indescribable. If you lived it-you know. Fashion was Salvation Army, borrowed & traded clothes & consignment shopping- resourceful we were broke! We spent our money on concert tickets, gas money and beer! Knowing everything we were told was a lie and to live hard.. Music all day and all night.. Long live Gen X.
All of my teenager years were in the 90s. It was a great time to be a teen indeed.

Maybe sometime in the future, we will gradually relinquish the "stuff" of today and return to more simpler, fun times.
Maybe we will soon realize that all of our "stuff" of today is not making us happy but very unhappy.
By "stuff", I mean: crap like Smartphones, Facebook, PC culture, etc.
Im very much hoping for a return to better times myself.

This is when people connected on deeper levels. Trains were full of conversations not people with ther heads down into a phone. We talked about the sports game the day before. We all watched the same shows and would connect to eachother through them. Social media has given us a false perception of being connected. We are actually disconnected more then ever.

That is revisionist BS! I was there, and while it may have happened occasionally, most people were reading a book or newspaper, and were just as inclined not to talk to people. I still have strangers approach me and talk to me in lines or when taking public transportation. It *may have been slightly more common, but the internet did not magically stop this from happening. I still connect to people in my life all the time, just as much as people did in the 90's.

90s..i remember.. was an era of collaboration. People were afraid of doing things independently. They love togetherness and often work in teams to complete a task.
It was all downhill after the 1990's. Then came the 2000 Stock market crash and 9/11. I feel bad for people who never experienced America before 2000.

I remember when I was 9 and president Obama announced the death of Osama bin laden and I saw people happy I was confused until 2014 or 2015 I learned about 9/11 and I was sad, a few years later I cried and can't believe it happened and I'm sorry it changed the life of the world and then my generation such narcissists. May those souls rest in eternal peace. But be glad that you're still here and with your loved ones and friends

MoltenMetalGod7 Lol! I lived through that. I had a PDA in 2002 and I had full length movies on its SD card, it had a GPS and wifi. I’d play games like Tomb Raider and doom on it, and had an app that downloaded the daily newspapers.
I’d tell people it’s what their phone would be in a decade, and they’d laugh. “Who would watch a movie on something that fits into the palm of your hand?” And I’d reply that they would if they were stuck on a train or a plane. More laughing denial.
I’d show them the GPS and they’d say “I wouldn’t trust it! And isn’t a road atlas book faster?” Yeah. When you have to look up the streets, pages and grid references? I don’t think so.
And of course of the news, they’d say they wouldn’t read something on a palm sized screen. Those same people of course now do all the above. Some people have no foresight. You see the same thing now with robotics and self driving cars.
Bill Gates biggest mistake - he said that mobile phones aren't worth developing an OS for Microsoft to go into as they will never become popular - talk about a faus-paux (mind you he did do ok i think, not heard much since 90s mind :P )

Kids play outside , healthy, not many fat people, respectful society and no stupid social media. That was the success of a good society.
We had internet forums and chat room, heck we even had sites like Myspace to insult each-other in the 90's. It wasn't as bad as now but it was all there. What we did not have was smart phones and laptops. So people read and gaze out windows while in coffee shops. The libraries were full of people then. Movie theaters were extremely popular.

You must be remembering the 90's wrong or through the lens of nostalgia, because we had laptops in the 90's, I even gamed on my dad's laptop. We also had mobile devices, such as PDAs, which could connect to networks and play games or even browse websites.
For movie theaters being extremely popular in the 90's, they had lower turn out numbers than today and they were predicting the death of movie theaters due to Betamax, VHS, and then DVD.
The main difference between kids in the 90's and now is the parenting, not the tech. My parents did not helicopter over me and sent me outside to play in the neighborhood. Many parents today lament the fact their kids rarely go outside, but also require their children be supervised 24/7. Children can't even go outside and play these days without some Karen calling the cops.
The tech available today was around in some sort or another in the 90's, and many had access to it. Society changed, tech is simply following along.

Born in 80 here. All my teen years in the 90s. Good times for sure being a kid. I would have loved to experience it as a young adult throughout the decade as well. I wouldn’t change it though. Born in 80, grew up in the 90s… I’ll be 42 in 2022 and honestly I still feel like I’m growing up.

We spend so much time reading about history and the future that we don't realize we're a part of history RIGHT NOW. 100 years from now they will be talking about our generation as the technological revolution. Which could be either a good or bad thing but certainly changed the world forever.
When you think about it, 100 years ago today there was a technological revolution as well. With the invention of, the radio, the refrigerator, and the automobile.

I was born in a early 1990's. I remember it fondly. Things just felt different, I even noticed the change from the 1990's to the early 2000's after 9/11 in particular. So many things just arent the same anymore.

I remember taking a computer class in 1990 in my freshman year of high school when floppy discs were in use. I failed miserably and subsequently developed a fear of computers that lasted about 25 years! I then gradually started to reacquaint myself in getting over that fear. I couldn't believe how much easier they are to use these days. Now I can't seem to live without one.
I vividly remember thinking that my junior year typing class and that my senior year computer (DOS) class were a waste of time. I thought that I would never have to type (because I wasn't going to be a secretary) and that the computers were next to useless. Now my entire world revolves around those two things. In college, my very first computer class assignment was to get a school email address and send a simple message to the professor. I was mortified.
You missed alot then... The internet was SO AMAZING back in the early - mid 2000's and onward. I was around for that boom. And I miss it. There's alot of stuff I even find nostalgia for like. Internet culture can just come and go in 5 years, Same with actual culture (Aspects or even entire culture), It's crazy. Things have changed. People care more about their mobile phones than PC's. PC's can do things that mobile phones can't. I may have witnessed the beginning, middle, and the near end of a renaissance. The early 2010's is when things started to go bad. Mostly after 2010 - 2011.

There was a feeling that the entire country was experiencing a golden era during the 1990’s. The nation was rapidly moving forward from the strife and chaos of the 60’s and 70’s. Race relations started healing, the economy was exploding, the internet connected us together in a way as never before. All of mankind seemed poised to take a giant leap into the new millennium and usher in a period of human greatness never experienced before on this planet and then on a Tuesday morning in September of 2001 everything changed. Our dreams of building a Pax-Americana were rooted in the naive idea that the rest of the world was riding the same wave.... we could not have been more wrong my friends and here we are now.... Is there anything else that needs to be said?
Well I guess a persons experience and opinion of the 90s is rooted in where they grew up and their life experiences..but really the 90s was a horrible decade..i mean yeah there was some cool music and video games but if you look at this decade compared to that decade violent street crime was way worse in the 90s..overt racism and hate crimes were the norm, government corruption was rampant..teen suicide, drug addiction and depression were statistically way too high..look at all the 90s rock heroes dropping one by one due to either drug overdoses or suicide..the issue of school bullying was horrible in the 90s, police department corruption was horrible, inner city violence and gang problems were way worse, harsh unreasonable drug laws jailing people unnecessarily..huge numbers of teen pregnancies..homelessness..homophobia..xenophobia..child abduction and kidnapping were higher then because for one thing the safety measures that kids have now were simply not there for us..90s was also the start of the age of the school shootings with Columbine..I know in 2020 it seemed like the country was exploding but it was happening because the country is trying to get better and heal from what the 80s and 90s were..i remember the 90s well..it was not all rosy cosy..it was a time of great polarization..it did have its good points too in that I had a lot of fun with my friends during the 90s..and the music was good..but the 80s had better music and better movies..
@B1Chronixx Yeah I definitely agree it went on with little interruption due to the lack of social media. I believe it was a worse time period, obviously there is still all of those problems existing that I mentioned, but I believe we are least on a path that gives hope that things can get better.
I'll always say 2000 was a great year, and even up to summer 2001 but yeah, after 911 the gears shifted permanently and there was no going back.

I know for a fact that sun shined brighter, sky was bluer, grass was greener and birds sang better. I love everything about 90s - music, movies, tv shows - it all had style. Just look at the intro of Melrose Place , god damn! One of the best decades ever, for me personally anyway.

I was born in 1969, so I feel our generation Class of '87 had a front row seat to the 20th century. The 1990's were the pinnacle of the modern world. There were THREE top 40 songs called, "Right Now". There was magic in the air. It was the 1960's enlightenment on Microsoft instead of Microdots, although both were interchangeable. From the Matrix, Shawshank, to The Simpsons and X-Files. It was the PERFECT time of the past and the future. Society still had the values of the WWII generation, yet we blazed our own path. It was MAGICAL and can't be described unless you lived it. In MY opinion, the 1990's were the last "normal" decade when we still had a collective conscience.
2000 and Bill Clinton's last year in office was the last time things were good. Everything changed for the worst in 2001 and the world was never the same. Downhill from there.

@@mr.bingley4680 Explain what you mean exactly. Do you think the world would e turned out differently had Al Gore won the 2000 election? I think about that from time to time. Technically he DID win but then a few Floridians decided they couldn't add correctly. Stephen King wrote a novel called 11/22/63 in which he hypothesized what would've happened had JFK not been assassinated and how the world would've turned out. I wonder that very same thing sometimes only it's what if Al Gore had one the 2000 election instead of W.
I'm always interested to see the opinion of people born before the 80s about the 90s. I feel like most of us born in the 80s are biased towards the 90s. I was born in 1984. Yeah the 90s we're great but personally I like this time better because of the gig economy. Anyone can work and get paid instantly whenever they want. In the 90s you had to work normal jobs. Not flexible like now. Gig jobs are the best invention in my lifetime I feel. Gig jobs and smartphones

Windows 95 in my opinion is of the best systems that made it incredibly easy to operate Windows and maintain professionalism.
Nintendo 64 in my opinion is one of the best consoles. The game-play never gets old when re-played.

The n64 has aged soooo well ohmigod no loading whatsoever and the gameplay - that's right, actual gameplay - holds up tight. I honestly can't think of a single ps4 game I've excited about since resident evil remake 2 which was coincidentally, a remake of, you guessed it, a game from the 1990s.

Being a kid in the 90s was such a unique experience. You got to experience the old world (no cellphones and even no internet) but were also given a front row seat to the new world with internet and cellphones.

I grew up in the 90s and our Generation really IS special.. we saw the change.. we watched the Internet take over the world, we knew what the world was like, before computers. When our children grow up they will NEVER know the Old World we grew up in, to them the Internet is like electricity was to us.

But as much as I believe social media and everyone is distant, we have to remember that we’re able to visit time better than we ever could back in the 90’s. The amount of music inspired by the 90’s, styles, and the ability to actually find “that one track” from the 90’s is possible more than ever in 2022. So yeah, we’re not living it anymore here in the future. The human element from the 1990’s is and always will be missing as people have moved on..
But we’re able to see, listen, watch, and design more of the 90’s than we ever could. And to me, that’s pretty fucking cool.

Todays technology is infinitely better. I was a huge music fan in the 90s and I woulda killed to have something like Spotify at my disposal.
Best decade ever, music fashion movies amd just overall attitude and feel of the era was special. So many sub genres of music and sub cultures of people from hip hoppers, grunge, skaters, goths etc etc now everybody dresses the same and wants to look like a stripper if your a female or a drug addict with weird hair if your male.

I am a child of the 90s. I remember the long summer days; playing in the streets with friends. No smartphones, just knock on their doors. Stay out until the sun went down with your push bikes. The internet was a novelty, we looked at stuff you shouldn't just for a laugh. Things that are taken for granted by today's generation. We used to build dens and light fires. Tell stories. Things were more personal, innocent and light hearted back then. It was the best of the old and new world. They were golden days. Oh, how can I forget wrestling. A soap opera for kids, it was great.
I was born in 1988. Even though very young I could still tell there was something magical about the 90s - TV, music, films, video games and clothes. And then the digital age just shat all over that growth.

Just a persepctive in just how massive Mariah was in the 90’s. She sold more records than anyone in the decade, male or female. Had a number 1 in the charts for ALL genres every year from 1990-1999. Was artist of the decade (she beat her male and female peers on the metric) on Billboard. She became the benchmark for every female pop singers since, that whenever a new girl that hit it big shows up, theyre immediately labeled the “next Mariah” hoping to achieve the same impact that their predecessor accomplished. Christina Aguilera, Leona Lewis, And now Ariana Grande all followed the Mariah formula to success, and time and time again, Mariah would outlast them all, Christina faded into obscurity, Leona dropped harder than a US nuke, and Ariana, well, she’s on the voice judging up and coming singers, in her mid 20s (judges are usually people past their primes).

I was in my mid 20s at the beginning of the decade. It was such a great time to be young. Great bars, fun times, taking the water taxi in Baltimore MD. It was truly great.

Europe was always a decade behind, and is actually still behind today obviously while America was experiencing the 90s Europe just was getting used to the 80s it was weird.

I remember that NBA was huge in Europe in mid-late 90s. The period that Jordan played in Chicago Bulls. It was crazy. They aired NBA games live in my country then, they have not done it since, to my knowledge at least. A friend of my mom gave me Chicago Bulls t shirt for seventh birthday. I dont know if it was fake or real or a whatever happened to that t shirt but i know that r kelly ""i can fly was a big hit around that time also, In former soviet block it was an excitiong time, all of a sudden if you could afford it you had access to all kinds of new toys. In early 90s murder rate was at historic high because of thr metal wars after collapse of soviet union., many countries even had not established laws yet.

OMG, THE 1990s WERE AMAZING!!! This is the decade I grew up in! It brought me back all the great memories when everything was the good old days with simple technology! There were all these great TV Shows, movies, Disney movies, cartoons, kid's shows, Michael Jordan winning six championships in the Chicago Bulls, etc. This decade makes me wish there was a time machine where we can travel back to the 1990s instead of dealing with the present time of the year.
I loved Full House 🏡 and most of the shows on Nickelodeon like rugrats and Doug. The 90s were a great time in my grade school year

looking back.. the 90's were really something special, especially for those who were in their teens.
The last decade that had truly defining features, (just like the 80's) and brought innovations to the masses, like cable-internet and mobile phones.
After that, it all became more of the same...
Sure... technologies got more sophisticated, but it was a development of already existing features... cellphones became pocket-computers, internet became wireless.
The use of internet took a huge leap and Apps like TH-cam took over from MTV and regular TV broadcasts.
There was no sickly need for attention, self promotion and applause like nowadays with social media and you actually had to have social skills to communicate with people.
If you wanted to approach a girl, you had to have skills, talk to her, court her and be respectful.... not send her a dickpick in a drunken stupor.
If you didn't feel confident about yourself and you didn't have any social skills, you didn't turn to the internet and scream that you are being judged and you're being treated unfair.
You worked on improving yourself, to become a better you, to become a person that understood that the world does not adapt to suit your needs and that YOU needed to adapt if you wanted things to change.
Because most of the communication was done face-to-face, you picked your words carefully....
You showed manners to elder people and you didn't pick fights with someone bigger and stronger than you; because you were in front of him and not behind the safety of a keyboard.
We had great times in disco's while dance, trance, club, R&B and HipHop were the main genres.. we could legally order a beer on our 16th and smoke a cigarette inside, nobody cared.
We had a lot of freedom and, eventhough a lot of experimented, most of us handled it responsibly.
Being a millennial is not half as bad as people may think...

The second half of the 90s we got to see the rise of 3d gaming ... Ps1, N64 and dreamcast (1999)
And last but not least, we got to see the biggest portable franchise born in the late 90s ... Pokemon.
I think 1985-1995 is literally the perfect 10 year that captures the raw 80s and 9ps style. Anothing after 95 was just more of a 2000s style if u think about it.

I was born in 83 so I can relate to a lot of this. The cool thing was, no political correctness, people were friends no matter what race you were, the music was just awesome of so many different genres on the radio, and you had freedom. I miss those days so much.
I don't recall anyone talking about politics much then besides on the news. Of course news then wasn't biased and full of it.

I know I remember bread being like 60 cents milk like $1.80 I remember before the major gas spike seeing 98 cents for a gallon of gas one time!

I sit in bed at night and just think about my life and how much I've been through and am thankful I've got to experience so much.
Lucky I was born in worst gen in history no one goes outside just staying on phones for 12 hours a day and every thing expensive parents are stricter. And I live on a house in the country/suburban with only 80 year old neighbors no kids at all I play with my friend irl like once a month back then it would be everyday for hours outside and his parents are strict so he gets to stay over for only 4 hours. I want to make a time machine

I implore all of you to take those rose-tinted blinders off, and look at the past from an objective perspective.
These were much harsher, more violent, and more dangerous times in the majority of the world than today in almost every metric.

Had my son in '96. By the time he got to kindergarten a third of the kids in his class were children of divorce.
I was born in 95. It was very rare for anyone to have parents that were still married when I was in elementary school.
In 96 I was 6th grade and there was only one kid in our class that was from a divorce and we used to think he was odd since he ate chalk straight from the blackboard. He was also a Jehovah's witnesses. Wonder what ever happened to him, he'd be 36 now
I was born in 1995 most people's parents got divorced at some point even my grandparents where divorced long before i was born but my parents did not get divorced but i think they will divorce soon at least they waited until i was a grown man.
